As one of the first places I ate at when I was younger when visiting the Bloomington/Normal area and a solid restaurant in the rotation when I attended the University of Illinois, Steak 'N Shake has some nostalgia and good experiences behind it that ensure that I make a visit from time to time (fortunately, there's plenty of locations in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago now). So I was looking forward to my visit here, to continue on a tradition of positive experiences while visiting Central Illinois. Unfortunately, this was probably one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in a long time. The prices are quite high here compared to other Steak 'n Shake locations, nearly 15-30% higher than the location nearest to my house, with a higher than normal cost to substitute sides on a combo. The service was fairly minimal, though a tip is charged at the register and you still need to pour your own drinks and clean up your table after you eat. The order was also delivered wrong several times and at different times. The food was quite disappointing here. The chili 5-way was almost soupy with very overcooked pasta and assembled sloppily. The way it was prepared made the entire dish lack any texture, and had an almost gloopy feeling to it. The watery mix also ensured that the spices inside the chili and the bite of the raw onion didn't really come through so that it wasn't really sweet, salty, or spicy enough to really be enjoyable. The Western BBQ 'N Bacon steakburger was also quite disappointing as well. It was served somewhat warm and even with the BBQ sauce and the bacon, didn't really have a lot of flavor. The onion rings felt a little soggy and the chocolate shake felt like it contained too much whipped cream in comparison to the chocolate shake and was served so cold I had to wait a while to even drink it. Overall, the most disappointing Steak 'N Shake experience I've had. I have dined at plenty of locations and this is definitely the worst location I've gone to. read more

This was easily the worst dining experience that I've had in a long time. Steak 'n Shake no longer offers table service, but makes you order at the counter and then brings you your food. It started out when I was overcharged for substituting onion rings for french fries. It shocked me that we paid $27 for much smaller servings less flavorful than I'm used to getting at Steak 'n Shake. Their menu is much smaller than it was the last time I visited. When the food arrived, the server took it off of the table and it was given to another table that had ordered the same chili mac five just before us, even though it had been opened. When we did get the food, it was very disappointing. The chili mac five had very little flavor, when it should have at least five flavors. The BBQ western cheeseburger that I ordered was underflavored and very small. This burger was the same size a McDonald's hamburger. The onion rings were not very crispy. The chocolate shake that I ordered came halfway through the meal and was too cold to suck through the straw. It took a good thirty minutes before I could really drink it, much too late to be part of the meal. If this is what Steak 'n Shake is turning into, then was my last meal there. read more

As somebody who has frequently eaten at Steak and Shake for most of their life its fair to say I've seen the wide variety of the quality of food change depending on location and time of day/night. This afternoon at the N Dirksen location I was shocked not only by the speed two meals were served, but how they were also managing a half full drive thru line. 10 minutes for two delicious meals! Store was nice and clean, playing recent hits over the stereo. Overall the best store I've been in a long time, shame they aren't busy like they used to read more

I placed a to go order consisting of two garlic burgers, cheese fries, onion rings and two coffees; one decaf one regular. One of the burgers was regular and the other burger had a ridiculous amount of garlic salt. The cheese for which I was charged was omitted from the order of cheese fries. After I paid for my order the server with dead eyes (you'll know 'em if you see em) handed me two coffees, when I asked which was the decaf they told me that there was no regular coffee, the decaf I received in place of the regular coffee I ordered was burned. There were no napkins included with my greasey-a$$ salty-a$$ soggy-a$$ food. The onion rings were acceptable, the fries were cold and flaccid. Went here yesterday with my son. It was mid afternoon. Not a lot of people. What stood out most was how loud the employees were. Our waitress was very nice and efficient. I ordered a garlic burger, fries and unsweetened iced tea. The tea was very good. The burger was also good, but very, very garlicky!! I'd like to start this review by saying our server had wonderful personality! She was smiling the entire time she waited on us and was pleasant and helpful. However, upon arriving at this location, one of the employees behind the counter was speaking loudly and using horrible language while what seemed to be reprimanding a fellow employee. We asked for someone to address this situation as it is both highly offensive and extremely unprofessional. We then watched the same employee walk around to each table and ask how their food/experience had been but skipped over our table completely. We dined in with Sherry (Sherri?) as our waitress, who was extremely friendly and professional. Our drinks and shakes arrived fairly quickly and the food arrived shortly behind that. Infrequent but regular customer here, about 10 times in the last 8 months, primarily drive thru or to-go. No complaints overall other than how wildly its service varies. Ordered the shooters a few months ago and all of the buns were rock hard. Literally could not bite through them... the cook either didn't notice (which is frankly amazing) or didn't care. Today I waited 30 mins for the same order to go with 3-10 people in the restaurant the entire time and no drive thru line. The manager admitted they made a mistake and threw in some free fries so that was cool, but I was literally getting stares from the employees (no one asked me about my order, they eventually figured it out themselves and muttered about it as if I wasn't there) and customers I had been waiting so long. Probably going to check out some other local joints from now on. Spilled my soup and made a big mess on the table. Cleaned off the table but didn't offer to bring a fresh bowl. No chicken in the chicken gumbo soup. Another waiter got me another bowl and it was cold, I mean really cold. I know this isn't a 5 star place but, you as a worker should treat it like it is and treat your customers like that as well. I have never had to wait for "fast" food so long in my life, I sat in the drive thru for over 45 minutes! I live in St. Louis now and the only reason I went is for the amazing cheese sauce they have. Not worth the wait, food was missing from our order, no receipt was given to us either. I went here with my parents shortly after it first opened. The service was horrible. It took 20 minutes to even get our drink orders taken. We just got up and left. My dad complained to the local franchise owners and they were very apologetic. We went back a few weeks later and the service was excellent. Waited to order and then when we finally were able to place our order we proceeded to wait another 25+ min just to get up to the window after ordering.
