a sign for steak n shake

As one of the first places I ate at when I was younger when visiting the Bloomington/Normal area and a solid restaurant in the rotation when I attended the University of Illinois, Steak 'N Shake has some nostalgia and good experiences behind it that ensure that I make a visit from time to time (fortunately, there's plenty of locations in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago now). So I was looking forward to my visit here, to continue on a tradition of positive experiences while visiting Central Illinois. Unfortunately, this was probably one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in a long time. The prices are quite high here compared to other Steak 'n Shake locations, nearly 15-30% higher than the location nearest to my house, with a higher than normal cost to substitute sides on a combo. The service was fairly minimal, though a tip is charged at the register and you still need to pour your own drinks and clean up your table after you eat. The order was also delivered wrong several times and at different times. The food was quite disappointing here. The chili 5-way was almost soupy with very overcooked pasta and assembled sloppily. The way it was prepared made the entire dish lack any texture, and had an almost gloopy feeling to it. The watery mix also ensured that the spices inside the chili and the bite of the raw onion didn't really come through so that it wasn't really sweet, salty, or spicy enough to really be enjoyable. The Western BBQ 'N Bacon steakburger was also quite disappointing as well. It was served somewhat warm and even with the BBQ sauce and the bacon, didn't really have a lot of flavor. The onion rings felt a little soggy and the chocolate shake felt like it contained too much whipped cream in comparison to the chocolate shake and was served so cold I had to wait a while to even drink it. Overall, the most disappointing Steak 'N Shake experience I've had. I have dined at plenty of locations and this is definitely the worst location I've gone to.

This was easily the worst dining experience that I've had in a long time. Steak 'n Shake no longer offers table service, but makes you order at the counter and then brings you your food. It started out when I was overcharged for substituting onion rings for french fries. It shocked me that we paid $27 for much smaller servings less flavorful than I'm used to getting at Steak 'n Shake. Their menu is much smaller than it was the last time I visited. When the food arrived, the server took it off of the table and it was given to another table that had ordered the same chili mac five just before us, even though it had been opened. When we did get the food, it was very disappointing. The chili mac five had very little flavor, when it should have at least five flavors. The BBQ western cheeseburger that I ordered was underflavored and very small. This burger was the same size a McDonald's hamburger. The onion rings were not very crispy. The chocolate shake that I ordered came halfway through the meal and was too cold to suck through the straw. It took a good thirty minutes before I could really drink it, much too late to be part of the meal. If this is what Steak 'n Shake is turning into, then was my last meal there.

I got Steak 'n Shake last night from door dash and all 3 of the chicken nuggets were not cooked at all.

Review Visit: May 12th, 2015…read more I'm still salty about this place. Why am I salty about Freddy's? It's not that I had bad service or anything like that. It's just all that I could taste when I ate my food. I wasn't even sure if I was going to visit Freddy's since it is more of a chain than a locally-owned place and the latter is more of my focus for my Travel List. It's a small chain with rare locations for my area, so I figured "why not". Freddy's was unique yet all-too-familiar upon entering. It's your standard fast food eatery where you place your order at the counter and wait for it to be brought to your table or you pick it up at the counter. My girlfriend and I were rather hungry, so we ordered a lot of food. Something that can be a bit risky if it's a new place that neither of you have been to. I ordered a burger, a hot dog and some fries. The fries are just like the ones you get at Steak N Shake. Actually, if you took S'n'S, made it red/white themed and made it more fast food orientated, you would have Freddy's. We wasted no time chowing down the food. I ate the hot dog first and it was okay. It was good but the flavor was a bit overpowered by the salt in the dog, bread, and toppings. Then I moved on to the burger (while munching on the fries in-between everything). The fries themselves, I hated. They were good on their own as most french fries are. Its just something about thin-cut fries that makes me angry. Drop some normal-sized fries or steakhouse fries in front of me and you have a happy blogger. But, that's just a personal preference. Again, the fries themselves were fine despite their lack of size. Where was I? Oh. The burger. The burger suffered the same fate as the hot dog. It was pure salt. It's as if they took the salt they normally sprinkle on the fries and sprinkled it on the burger and dog instead. This lead to some mild discomfort after the meal, if you can imagine that. The bloat was real. For it being a simple combo meal, it was alright when it came to the value. A simple burger, a hot dog, fries, and a drink should fill most everyone up. They have other combo meals should you not be a fan of hot dogs or burgers. I would visit a Freddy's again if I was with someone who had never been before. I'm always for second chances. I would make sure to get a water with my meal to help my body deal with the potential sodium overload that was being cooked for me.

It's hard to understand how that many mistakes can happen on a single order. When I brought the issues to the staff's attention, there was no apology, no sense of urgency, and no indication that anyone cared. They acted as though it was an inconvenience that I expected the order I paid for to be correct. Mistakes happen, but poor customer service is a choice. Between the overcharge, the incomplete meals, and the dismissive attitude, I left feeling like customer satisfaction was the last thing on anyone's mind. I won't be in a hurry to come back.

1 star way to much!…read more Walked in and order taker was on phone with a Doordash customer, "wait a second" he said, then 5 minutes later, still on phone, he walks over into the office and disappears. At least 6 or more staff working the window and driveup and in house orders, just give us a glance and look away. Disgusted, we walk out, and give the good news to a fellow coming in not to expect much, if any service. This is same location that we stopped going in after the following problem with an order. I asked 3 hard shell tacos. When we got to the table and started to eat, we notice all three were "Short" on meat. I can honestly say the meat was almost non-existent on all 3 shell, just lettuce. I went back to the counter, handed bag, showing one taco to the guy, and said there is nothing in these. He said he would fix them right up. He did, all three were loaded and overfilled with more lettuce! I dumped the bag on counter and we left. Did not darken the door there for several years. Note we just live about 2 blocks N or this store which is on 3025 W. White Oaks Drive, Spfld, IL. Looks like it time take a "TimeOut" again. Looks like Arbys, Culvers and even McD will be getting more business when we just want a quick bite, which apparently is NOT available at this location.
