I've eaten here twice about 45 minutes before they closed. Both times the fried seafood was good and freshly cooked. Unfortunately the fries and rings were oil sodden as if they had been precooked then tossed back into the fryer to reheat them. For this reason I haven't been back even though I live right down the street. Too bad, I love fried seafood and hoped this would be my neighborhood seafood fix. read more

Butter and toast the bread on the lobster rolls you bums. Overall a decent restaurant but a lobster roll is a pretty simple formula. First you give that weird gigantic bun. Which is fine. But you don't toast it. Huge mistake. Get it together. read more

I live not too far away and was trying to find a place to take out-of-town guests for a New England treat that wouldn't be Legal Seafoods and break the bank. Through the Yelp app, I came here to check it out first and was sadly disappointed. I'm not too crazy about lobster rolls in general, so I didn't get them here, and maybe that was my mistake. Instead, I got their equivalent of a fisherman's platter which they call "The Lake" and some clam chowder. The chowder came out piping hot, and you could see steam coming from the cup. I suspected that it had been heated up in a microwave, but I still made sure to drop in my oyster crackers because I like them to be somewhat softened by the chowder. However, when I took my first spoonful of the chowder, it was just warm, and I knew then that it had in fact been heated in a microwave. Also, the chowder was not thick and creamy but more of a watery based chowder - not my type of chowder. The fisherman's platter came out next and didn't look that appealing. On top were two thick cut onion rings that looked like they were just thrown on and one of the rings was poorly fried. If you are going to only put two onion rings on top, you should make sure that they both look good, especially if it's the first thing that a customer sees. Other things that I noticed and didn't like were that coleslaw was left out of my platter, and I had to ask about it. The guy said he didn't have any little cups left and said that I could take one of the full size containers from the fridge in the front which I did. Sadly, it was tasteless and had gone bad - there was an odor coming from it. He also asked me if I wanted tarter sauce, and I noticed that another customer had to ask for lemon. Normally, when you order seafood like this, coleslaw, tarter sauce, and lemon wedges come on the side without having to ask for them. Maybe he doesn't have the volume of customers and is trying to save a little. That's the impression that I got of the place. Now, onto the food itself. It was just okay. If you need a fried clam fix and don't want to venture far from the area, I think it's good for that. The platter had about five of the largest whole belly clams I have ever eaten. They were humongous to the point of being a little too large for me to enjoy. I had to squish them into my mouth, almost like eating over sized sushi rolls. Like another reviewer here, I noticed the darkened color of the fried scallops. I don't know why they are darker than the other fried foods, but at least they weren't over cooked - at least I didn't think so. Although, I did think that the shrimp was slightly over fried. Lastly, the haddock. I couldn't even pick it up because it was falling apart and was completely tasteless to me. It just made me think that perhaps it wasn't the freshest piece of fish. I couldn't finish the whole thing and took the rest home, not because it was tasty but because I don't feel right wasting food. All of this plus a soda costed over $28. I didn't think it was worth it and would rather go to Legal Seafoods or head into Boston to Morse Fish Company. read more

Everything i've had here has been delicious. I've tried the steamers, mussels, and salmon from the fish market part and they are top quality. The fried clams are phenomenal--and they give you so much! If you went to get a platter of that size in Boston, it would probably be over 25 dollars. At Steamers I think I only payed like 15 or 16 for a whole takeout container full of fried goodness. I like how they keep it real, and don't try to decorate it to be something they're not. Just like other fish markets, they sell fresh seafood, and are awesome enough to cook it for you to take home as well, all in a no frills, but clean environment. After having a major lobster craving and reading the reviews on yelp, I went to this place due to it's proximity to my home for a fancy pants lunch. I got: Lobster bisque- don't bother- I think it is reheated from frozen and it tastes that way-- overly fishy and not fresh-- I ate it anyway. Lobster roll -surprisingly satisfying. I say "surprisingly" because it came out on an unbuttered, ungrilled bulky roll...pretty untraditional in these parts. The guy at the counter actually took the basket of lobster meat they had for sale at the counter and brought it in back to make the lobster salad fresh for me and boy, was it awesome. The roll was filled but not overfilled with sweet, tasty, fresh lobster. I didn't miss the grilling one bit. The service was friendly and personal. This store is clearly a small local shop and the owner was also my sandwich maker. It is always nice to find a gem like this close to home. Next time, I will have to try some of their grilled dinners. read more

Steamers is a welcome choice for fresh seafood. We live in a neighboring community and all of our fish places have closed. Luckily Steamers is on my way home from work. I prefer fried and my wife prefers broiled, so we have tried a range of their fish. Cod, halibut, haddock, calamari have all been good. We avoid the fish of the day that can be tilapia which my wife abhors The fried coating is light and crisp and the broiled fish can be cooked to your preference. The dinners often come with both fried onion rings and potatoes. It is a very small place and seems to have a large takeout business. The owner and staff have always been helpful and friendly and the food has always been ready when I arrive. They offer fresh fish which is displayed on the right as you enter as well as a collection of frozen choices including octopus. We have been going there for years on Fridays and hope to enjoy their fish for years to come. read more

Very good lobster roll. Very, very good. Almost five star good. It's fresh, the lobster portion is generous, the seasoning doesn't mask the natural flavor of the lobster. It's probably my favorite lobster roll in the area. And it's not expensive. So, definitely check it out. read more

I live near here and was craving for a lobster roll and didn't want to go too far so I came to this place after seeing it on Yelp. Overall it's a pretty good local restaurant. The lobster roll is good portion, lots of lobster meat in it and it tasted fresh. However, there's a piece of hard lobster shell left in the middle of the lobster roll, which was a little dangerous, especially because I have braces, it could do quite a bit of bloody damage to my mouth if I didn't see it and took a big bite. It was probably just a careless mistake though so I didn't want to give it less than 4 stars, but I was really surprised to find the shell in the roll (see pictures). But then well, at least that means the lobster is definitely a real lobster haha. The clam chowder was ok. I read rave reviews about it and had high expectation, but in reality the clam chowder had very little clam in it, and all tiny tiny chunks I could hardly taste. On the other hand, I had a clam chowder at the airport today and even the airport food quality is much higher than the clam chowder here... read more

I've been going here for what must be 20 years (or since they've opened if they're not 20 years old yet). It has extremely fresh seafood purchased that morning. If you need to buy the food yourself you'll get expert recommendations on what to buy, how much to buy an how to prepare it. I've also had the pleasure of buying some of their plates. I'm basing my responses from the lobster roll, clam strip roll & plate and the clam plate and can tell you they are reasonably priced and huge! You will not leave the table hungry. A bit of advice is that this place gets crazy busy during the summers and on Friday's during Lent. Do yourself a favor and go there! read more

I have been going to Steamers for several years. Favorites are the Haddock chowder, crab cakes that are in the freezer, and whatever fresh fish looks good to me that day. Service has always been pleasant and efficient. Last week I learned that the owner and his wife are also just about the nicest people around. I needed some medical attention (injured myself on car latch on way into store) They went above and beyond to help me. When I called a few days later to thank them, the owners response was "no thanks necessary, that's the kind of people we are". What more do I need to say? These are the kind of people that you WANT to do business with. read more

Steamers is a fish market, but they do take-out as well. I work nearby and go at least 2-3 times a week for lunch. The portions are good for the price. My top five lunch pics would be clam chowder, cajun tilaipa sandwich, grilled scallops, lobster roll, and the swordfish dinner. I have also purchased lobsters from the seafood counter....always good. Pretty cool spot. My husband got a Lobster roll and it was stuffed and yum. I wasn't sure what to get and they suggested a spicy tuna sandwich and it was pretty good. We ate there and enjoyed every bite. Good area to walk around, good service and good food. read more

Wonderful fresh fish! We just discovered Steamers and are so impressed. The fish and chips were delicious - the fish was cooked so flavorfully and tender - probably the best we've ever had! Service is great - the owner and staff are friendly and helpful. I called my order in and 10 minutes later it was ready to be picked up. This is exactly the type of neighborhood business we want to thrive and succeed and Steamers will become a regular take out destination for my family. So happy to find a place like this. read more

Steamers has a sign on the door which says, "the best lobster roll" and it is very true. It doesn't look like it would be true, but don't be skeptical, go in there and get one. I refuse to get these anywhere else after I had an absolutely decadent and fresh lobster roll here. Get it with fries too, they are perfect! read more

Really good seafood. Went here for an Ipswich (full belly) clam fix, and they did not disappoint. The clams were large, though a bit chewy. Lunch came with excellent French fries and a few onion rings. The only item not outstanding was an small, ordinary side of cole slaw. Came here last Friday evening with a group of friends. A seafood market with 5 small tables. We saw a bunch of people making take out orders. I had the lobster roll and my girlfriend had grilled scallops. The lobster roll was good - fresh tasting lobster with not that much mayo. I liked the bread but it was a little too much bread for the amount of lobster. I was a bigger fan of the scallops. Unfortunately, we got there an hour before close the day before the owners were going on vacation so they were out of a lot of items. It's basically a fish market with a few tables, so dont take a girl there on a first date, but if youre looking for a solid meal without taking a serious hit in the wallet, steamers is a great place to grab a quick lunch. Steamers is my go-to place to buy fresh fish. The fish is always super fresh, and Dominic (the owner) stocks a good variety of what is currently in season and available on the docks in Gloucester. He also has a selection of frozen fresh pastas, shrimp, squid, and other foods. I have asked Dominic if he can get me specialty items, like squid ink, and he always comes through. Steamers is also a part of the neighborhood and community. read more
