Sadly, Steamers seems to have fallen victim to its own success during the quarantine. The last few times we ordered: the calamari are always swimming in oil in that paper box - had to drain in paper towel and place in toaster oven. Unfortunately that makes them tough like rubber bands. The whole clams have become smaller and smaller - bellies are less than 1/2" diameter. The scallops are still fresh and big, although also usually in a pool of oil. The lobster rolls are generous but no flavor at all. The best are still the fried shrimp and the onion rings. read more

Did not know what to expect. It is a market with about 5 small table with sitting for about 10 people. We ordered the lobster roll and the lobster bisque. The roll was very fresh and packed with lobster. The lobster did not have any dressing, all you taste is the sweetness of the lobster. This place is a hidden gem. They have the best lobster rolls in town. We get fresh fish from them every Saturday and it is SO great. Marissa is always super knowledgeable about what they have in that day and makes great recommendations. Her dad picks out the fish in the morning at the local docks. If you want a simple but delicious lobster roll for a great price, come to Steamers! It's a small little corner shop in a neighborhood so it's easy to miss. Street parking available and a few small tables inside to eat but I get the sense most people take their food to go. For $17-18 you get a huge roll stuffed to the top with fresh lobster meal, both claw and tail, and dressed with a bit of mayo. So fresh and succulent! I wish the roll were toasted and buttered so that's the only reason this isn't 5 stars, but for the amount of lobster and freshness of it, it can't be beat! read more

I don't know how I've lived so close for so long and never knew about this place! Got a lobster roll tonight and OMG was THE BEST I've ever had (and I'm a MA native)!! I swear there must have been 4 claws+ worth of meat, and just a light touch of dressing, I am psyched to have leftovers for lunch! Also got the sweet potato fires, again, BEST I've ever had (and I am a HUGE SP fry fan), flat cut, instead of cube cut like most, that must be the diff. Forget driving to Maine for Seafood, just to go Steamers! Steamers is a hidden gem for sure. Steamers is one part Seafood Restaurant and one part Seafood Market, but all in one wonderful package. This great little place has found a way to provide the best of both worlds and to simply say they are doing it right is the understatement of the year! You can buy any type of raw seafood (and they always have plenty of variety) that you would want including the staples that you would expect like Clams, Lobster (cooked and live), Swordfish, Shrimp and Haddock and nothing is ever frozen, always just as fresh as can be. In fact, the seafood here is so fresh that after one bite, you know for sure that the food here has only been out of the ocean for a matter of hours. The owner is a great guy that works very hard to always have on hand the best of the best and plenty of it. At the crack of dawn each morning, he is at the docks, literally, meeting up with the local Fishermen, negotiating the best deals he can to bring back to you the freshest seafood that I have ever found anywhere, except in Maine where it's equally as fresh. His efforts pay off in spades every day. Hats off to the great setup here. If you don't feel like cooking it yourself, you can have him cook it for you. He has the classic Seafood Restaurant menu with everything from Fried Seafood Dinners and Lobster Rolls, to Shrimp Scampi over Linguine. However, if you are like me and just want to dive into seafood and nothing but seafood ASAP, head on over to the fresh seafood counter and select your seafood of choice, sold by weight, and always at a very fair price since he cuts out the middle men. Then for only $1 more per pound he will take what you purchased, and head into the kitchen to fry it up for you. Forget going to a fancy restaurant where you'll get 5-6 ounces of Haddock with a few spoonfuls of rice and veg for $20-$30. Come here and you can really stretch your dollar and have your fill of the best seafood around. Also, many of the local restaurants use frozen seafood which cannot never compare to his super fresh offerings. The restaurants that don't serve frozen seafood will charge you crazy prices, like Summer Shack and Legal Seafood and they have nothing on Steamers, trust me. I recently traveled to Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, Maine. They are both known for great Seafood and that is because they really do have excellent ocean fare. Since that trip, I have been craving what I had up there but knowing how long a drive it is, I just couldn't take the time to drive back up there. Then it hit me. I remembered this place. It had been a while, years in fact, since I had been to Steamers. Could my memory be tricking me? Am I remembering correctly that this place has seafood as good and as fresh as any place in NH or ME, or even anywhere on the North East Coast? I had to investigate. I just went to Steamers and bought 2 pounds of the freshest Haddock ever for $30 and sure enough it was nothing short of amazing and it was perfectly cooked. I also got a pound Full Belly Clams for $40 and they we just as amazing. Kelly's RB charges almost $40 per "box" of less than half a pound of clams and they are previously frozen and not even close to the quality and freshness of Steamers clams. I don't use the word "Amazing" often or lightly. I'm actually very picky about food, its freshness and the flavors and I write a lot about food and restaurants. Bottom line? When you are in the mood for seafood to cook at home, or to have cooked for you, and you are lucky enough to be near Steamers, forget driving to Maine, just head over to Steamers in Newton, right over the border of Watertown. You will be glad you did. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. A+ all day long. There is such a thing as perfection and this place, they do it right. read more

Picked up a fried food option. Two onion rings on top of bento box were pretty good 5/10. Shrimp were coated with some sort of wheat flour only 5/10. Sea scallops were approximately 1" diameter and the shucker neglected to remove the little muscle on all but one 4/10. The "whole" clams were basically the bellies, presumably to sell the remainder as "strips" 2/10. Then there were the chips. Incredibly uncrispy, even after a go in the toaster oven, still limp. -5/10 (that's a negative). Maybe the coleslaw is decent, but I'm not optimistic and therefore it is right to the bin. I mean the people don't lie. This is the place to get a lobster roll. It was cheap, quick, COVID safe and perfect for what I was looking for. They don't put a whole bunch of stuff on the sandwich, you get the real taste of the lobster. I' just moved to the area and have meant to stop by here for a few weeks now. We went in for lunch on a Saturday and were quickly greeted by the guy who was running the counter. We ordered the lobster roll and fried shrimp lunch. The food came quick and tasted pretty fresh. However, at $25 for those two items I'm not so sure I could make this a frequent visit. We didn't buy fish, but everything looked super fresh although possibly a bit expensive. Steamers has them for a reasonable price, and are some of the highest quality in the area. Steamers catered my brother's rehearsal dinner and it was outstanding! We had guests from outside of New England so we decided to have a seafood sampling grilled dinner. In addition to the lobster salad and steamers, we had salmon, sword, and mini crab cakes (went like hot cakes!). Steamers seafood is always fresh, and it was grilled on site to perfection. In addition, we had cole slaw and grilled corn on the cob. The guests raved about the all the selections, how gracious the staff was, and I was pleased with how accommodating they were. We've received a number of notes this week from our guests and all have mentioned how delicious the food was at the rehearsal dinner. Before deciding to have Steamers cater this party, we looked into many other caterers in the area. I heard about their various "packages", none of which appealed to us and were overpriced. A fishmonger/deli with a very small unconcerning dining area with room for about 8 if you are not too picky. I was going to get the fish and chips but I swapped for the oyster and chips. Service was good and timely, the oysters breaded and cooked as if someone loves oysters--just enough to cook the coating and leaving the oysters with that luscious oyster texture. They sat on a bed of hot and fresh fries topped with a couple onion rings. The side of slaw was ok, lightly coated with a thinned down mayo dressing and not really any flavor to speak of. Everything was fresh and hot. Not much else to say, priced like a family-style restaurant at about $13 which did not match the environment, but it was good. The clam chowder was creamy and the best I can recall with clam meat in about every other bite. I then got a $17 lobster roll for the 5 1/2 hour plane ride home which came in a fresh roll and nothing but lobster. Fortunately, I had the row to myself or you would have read about me getting mugged over a lobster roll while in flight. The banana-sized chunks of fresh and perfectly cooked lobster meat exceeded the volume of the roll! I would have liked some fresh salted butter drizzled on the thing, but to be honest, the purity of lobster and soft bread was in itself satisfying in a way that satisfaction minimizes the experience. This is the second time I've had a lobster roll there. I don't know what it was but the second one blew my mind. Best I've ever had in my LIFE. It was succulent and sweet with just the right about of mayo. The bread it came on was DEEEEELISH and really brought the whole roll together.
