Fish and chips from Steamers
Bob L.

Great food, seems fresh, fries and onion rings were good.Reason for review is only 2 onion rings one piece of small thin fish for 35.00 for two fish and chips.

Consistently amazing fresh seafood plus hot food cooked to order. The chowder was amazing and we've had multiple items from the fish case that have always been great. Sandwiches and fried fish platters are winners - such a great location with super helpful staff.

Fresh seafood and definitely a hole in the wall kind of spot. There a few tables but it feels more fish market than restaurant. That gives it a bit of charm. Tried the Lake Platter and clam strip platter. Both were fresh and prepared on demand. If you are looking for your fried seafood fix...or steamed lobster, chowder, etc.... and don't want to drive to the shore, this is your spot. Staff was very friendly as well, despite the mishap I'm about to mention. My only complaint was that I went in and shared that it was my first time. The staff helped me with recommendations. I was there at lunch time on a Friday and was looking through the specific lunch menu with the staff member. I pointed to the lunch platter called the Lake on the lunch menu and inquired about it. I decided to order that and also the lunch clam platter since there was two of us dining. When the bill came... it was $29 for the Lake platter alone and not the $16.99 on the lunch menu. When I asked about it.... she said "oh you need to ask specifically for the lunch portion next time" ... So, pointing to the Lake platter on the lunch menu at 1230pm on a Friday wasn't enough to indicate I wanted the lunch Lake platter... but pointing to the clam strip platter on the lunch menu somehow did end up with me indicating I wanted the lunch portion of that one?? My $30 lunch turned into a $50 one. I want to chalk this up to miscommunication but I had a menu in my hand and pointed to it on the lunch menu and asked about it and then said yes I'll order this. Everything about my experience was good except this one thing. I boxed the excess to take home because it was alot of food. So not the worst thing in the world. I will likely go back, now armed with the knowledge that I need to triple verify my order. The Lake platter was pretty good. Fried haddock, fried shrimp, fried whole clamp and fried scallops. All fresh. I'm not saying it's not worth the $29 but I was annoyed that pointing to the menu item didn't get me the menu item. I think I will go back to order some raw seafood to cook at home because everything looked so good. I will review my next visit in hopes of giving it 4 or 5 stars. I wanted to give 5 stars on this one for the food alone.

This was my first visit, having overlooked this place for years (despite it being across the street from the iconic Antoine's Bakery in "The Lake" (the Nonantum section section of Newton.) Steamers is a local fish market/hole-in-the-wall restaurant. It's a down-and-dirty establishment that serves up fried and grilled seafood, chowders, pasta, and salads for relatively reasonable prices. There are a few tables for eat-in. This is not fancy, but reasonable for what you get. I had the Fish and Chips which was two smallish pieces of fish, fries, two onion rings, and cole slaw. The fish was decent, but a lower-end grade of fish which I strangely couldn't identify (the flesh was dense and it had a slightly strange {not bad} taste. Hake?) The order came with a generous amount of crispy fries and the two onion rings were good and a nice touch. Cole slaw was fine; tasted like it was from a jar. All in all, not a bad place for a reasonably-priced, quick seafood lunch and to support a local establishment.

Steamed clams.

I am an East Coaster who now lives in Arizona. Needless to say, the seafood here is pathetic. Recently, I was visiting a friend in Boston. I read the Yelp reviews and we decided to check this place out. Don't go here if you want ambiance. But definitely go here is you want the best seafood. I felt like I was sitting at the beach and getting clams straight from the boat. We had steamers and I had full bellied fried clams. Some of the best I have ever had. I will definitely go back when I am in Boston again. My friend says this is her new go to place. The owners daughter (the chef) came out and had a lovely chat with us.

Lobster, steamers, grilled scallops dinner

Was craving for lobster - luckily it's the season and I'm in Boston! Found this seafood shop that sells live lobsters and other seafood- mainly for take out since is a tiny store front. Very disappointed on the lobster :..( Just asked for a female lobster around 1.5lb, came to be very small and hollow, almost nothing in the claws or head, and tiny tail... good thing it still tasted fresh, no spoiled flavor, but definitely not good enough to tame my cravings... Steamers tasted fresh and not a lot of sand, but also not very meaty, on the small/dry side. Good thing the scallops were very good, cooked nicely, meaty, juicy and fresh, with nice charred and buttery flavor. Also the grilled veggies were seasoned nicely.

No frills. Not fancy. Just a local seafood shop with super fresh fish and shrimp, reasonably priced. Dominic was friendly and knowledgeable, and provided great customer service. I came for the raw food but will be sure to try their prepared foods next time!

Atmosphere: Local little fresh fish shop that has a restaurant in it as well. Service and food: The girl (I even asked her name and as soon as we left I completely forgot I feel terrible) was great! It's a little place on the corner of Dalby? They have paper menus with all sorts of options. There was 3 adults and 1 kid with us. We had clam chowder, lobster bisque, fried clam strips, fried fish, fries and onion rings. Oh and a lobster roll. It was all great! No complaints for any of it. We are in town and kept getting off our path to our hotel. So glad we found this place and with the reviews we figured it's got to the be first place in Boston (newton) that we eat lol.

Lobster Roll

In Boston I expect top notch lobster. The quantity was good but the quality was a slight miss. Dry bread and some chewy parts of lobster. Still a good spot on this side of town just not the best of the best.

Lobster rolls and fried clams are some of my most favorite things to put in my belly. I accidentally stumbled across Steamer's on yelp and saw that they had 4.5 stars here so i was really excited to give them a try given their glowing reviews (plus they were only around a 7 minutes drive from home). Things that i've tried at Steamers: Lobster Roll: It was just OK and definitely nothing special (just your regular lobster roll with simple mayo). I can easily think of a number of other different places that have better lobster rolls (e.g Pauli's, James Hook, Row 34, Island Creek Oyster Bar, Neptune Oysters, B&G Oysters, Legal Seafoods, Atlantic Fish, etc.). They do give out a decent amount of lobster meat though which is a plus given that the roll only costed around $18 dollars. I think my biggest issue was the bread that they used. There was too much bread for the size and amount of lobster meat and the bread did not appear to be toasted. I also did not like the taste of the bread itself. It had this somewhat inferior supermarket 10 day old stale bread taste to it which overpowered and distracted me from the taste of the lobster meat (which should be the highlight and most important element). Fried Clams: I was very disappointed by their fried whole belly clams given that they were soggy by the time i got back home. As a disclosure, i picked up my order as soon as it was ready and my drive home only took around 7 minutes. I believe the root cause of the sogginess was because they transferred the piping hot fried clams into the takeout container (as soon as it was done cooking). Because the takeout container did not have holes for ventilation, the fried clams just ended up steaming itself in its container (you can refer to the picture that i took showing the significant condensation in my takeout box). If a customer is going to pay $45 dollars an order of fried clams, then i think the restaurant should not be making such a rookie mistake (i also have myself to blame as well for not opening up the takeout box to help prevent the fried clams from steaming).

I got the salmon sandwich for my mom and she said it was very good. She's a picky eater so I can't wait to try it on my own.

Delicious. Wanted lobster rolls and this fit the bill. Best to eat it fresh and not after a 25 minute car ride.

Legal Sea Foods has offered a lunch combo menu for a few years now, but Chestnut Hill was the first…read morelocation to have a copy on the table when we were seated for our reservation. I went for the soft shell crab sandwich $24 off the Daily Features menu. It was good, but perhaps a little over fried. They let me swap out my french fries and cole slaw for the brussels sprouts with bacon and the roasted butternut squash, to make for a healthier meal.

I went to the bar for the $2 bowl of clam chowder on Chowder day at around 3:30 pm and was given a…read morepaper cup of chowder that was room temperature and congealed. I informed the server that it wasn't hot and asked for it to be heated up and served in a bowl. He said that the cup is the same size as the bowl and took off with the cup of chowder. I wanted to tell him that the quantity wasn't an issue, but I wanted the chowder served in a real bowl and point out that many other diners had their chowder served in bowls, but he left before I could. When he came back, he handed me another paper cup of lukewarm chowder. At this point, I realized he had no intention of serving me a nice, hot bowl of chowder, but that he would likely bring me a 3rd paper cup of congealed chowder if I remained. I noticed that there was a free table on the floor, so I decided to leave the bar and sit at a table hoping to get better service. I did get better service with a very nice waiter who was patient, pleasant, and respectful, and he brought me a hot bowl of chowder that was very good. I also ordered the $1 Happy Hour oysters which were also very good and a nice Sonoma Chardonnay. However, I was disappointed with the crab cake sliders which had hardly any crab meat and were mostly gooey filler. Legal Sea Foods used to have really good crab cakes, loaded with crab meat, but these sliders were not up to their former standards. I walked past the bar on my way out and could see that there was a cauldron of chowder on the bar surrounded by stacks of paper cups. Clearly, the cauldron didn't keep the chowder as hot as it would be if ladled out from a pot on the stove in the kitchen. My advice to diners is not to order chowder at the bar if you see the cauldron set out with paper cups. I had a bowl of chowder at the bar at the Legal Sea Foods near the New England Aquarium on New Years Eve, and it was served in a china bowl and was hot. No problems. I think Chestnut Hill management would be wise to have a runner take the chowder order from the bartender and bring out the chowder, hot, from the kitchen in a bowl. Paper cups ruin the chowder experience: the taste of paper and the low temperature diminishes the flavor and consistency of perfectly good chowder, which defeats the purpose of chowder day, a celebration of their signature chowder. If a diner asks for the chowder to be served hot in a bowl, giving a diner one paper cup after another of tepid chowder shows a lack of regard. It's better to explain that the only place at the Chestnut Hill location where a diner can have hot chowder in a crockery bowl is at a table, not the bar. I think that a quality restaurant should never serve diners take out paper cups of chowder in the first place.

They can add your fish to a bed of rice for an extra cost. They also have seafood that you cook, those items are in separate fridges with a label stating that the product is recommended for cooking. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon one time and waited ~10-15 minutes for two sushi rolls because there was only one person working on the sushi behind the counter and one person taking care of the register. Please be patient with them as they seem like a family-owned small business. You can also call ahead to order party trays. The prices seem fair, I've never been disappointed with the quality of fish. The Shaking sauce was absolute perfection. The barlic was probably delicious but didn't even compare with the amount of flavor in the shaking sauce. I think the lobster roll was a lobster salad and I really really enjoyed it. We also ordered garlic noodles, mac and cheese, and fried pickles. The garlic noodles are fine but not great. It tastes like cheap takeout noodles and I wouldn't get it again. Similarly, the mac and cheese is also just fine. I actually liked the fried pickles though because batter was seasoned well but just a little salty. If you come here, get ready to eat messy! Thankfully they give you bibs and gloves so you can eat comfortably. Next time I want to try the Tom Yum sauce.
