Convenient spot, but staff could use more helpful vibes I booked a room here because it beats the hassle of just renting a locker for eight hours--wandering around, hoping whoever I match with has a room. With my own space, I can actually host and keep things smooth. Location's practical, I've used it before, no complaints there. This visit, though? Front desk was frustrating. Vending machine was supposed to take Google Pay--I had money on my linked card--but it kept rejecting it anyway. No physical cards, no cash, just wireless pay, so I was stuck. Thing is, that same Google Pay card worked fine when I paid for my entrance fee at the front--so I figured if they opened the machine, I could just buy what I needed and pay him right there, where it actually processed. When I asked if they could open it for me (unless it's some independent vendor), the Latino guy--black shirt, small red shorts, I think his name's Jesse--said it's theirs, but he doesn't have the keys. Then it was just "Sorry, can't help," "We don't do that," and he'd walk off. Felt like talking to a brick wall on a slower-than-usual Tuesday night--there were a few people around, just not the usual rush. They kept saying "just use the ATM we have here," but that thing doesn't even take wireless tap--Google Pay's useless on it. I wasn't leaving empty-handed after paying--refunds aren't an option once you're in--so I kept at him, asking questions insistently--not yelling, just not backing down. Half the time I'd have to walk behind him as he kept moving, not stopping to hear me out--he was being evasive, like he wanted me gone. I ended up chasing him down just to get a real answer. I asked if there was any way I could leave momentarily without losing my spot, and only then he said, "Okay, yes, you can take a 20-30 minute break." I bolted to my bank's ATM outside, got cash, made it back in time. He buzzed open the door for me without a word, then said nothing else--like I wasn't even there. I had to approach him again, ask if he needed anything else from me. Only then did he grab a towel, dump my keys on it, slam the bundle across the counter, and turn away, evasive the whole time. Made me feel like a nuisance instead of a member. If he really can't open the machine, fine--but some basic direction would've helped. Do not tell people if they get a membership they will wait in a shorter line. Were it true, that'd still be a conflict of interest to charge anything associated with vaccine distribution. Definitely worth a visit, despite some areas in need of improvement. Positives: 1. Good variety of guys across lines of race, age, and body type 2. Plenty of dark spaces to explore 3. Lockers felt secure and had seating at some sections Areas that need improvement: 1. Smell. It smells like body odor in the halls containing the rooms. It is unpleasant and in need of correction, such as more thorough cleaning of rooms and air fresheners. 2. Inconsistent staff experience. Two staff members were exceptionally friendly, accommodating, and helpful. One staff member was not. He gave off the impression that he did not want to be there and he certainly didn't want to be talking to me. In fact, he provided zero guidance upon checking me in. I had no idea I was supposed to wait for my key after entering the facility. I put my clothes in the wrong locker and upon trying to sort this out, another associate realized my assigned locker was registered under a different name. The associate who checked me in clearly did not take the time to ensure my registration was completed correctly. Had I not put my stuff in the wrong locker, who knows what could have happened to my possessions. Unfortunately, he also checked me out for the night and continued his disaffected, irritated attitude. Bathhouses are an overwhelming experience for many, it is imperative that staff members maintain a friendly and approachable disposition. 3. Accommodations for bottoms are lacking. The architecture and layout is geared towards tops. There is a whole platform designed for tops to walk around the top while bottoms wait on the floor wait to be selected. The glory holes do not have knee rests, which forces bottoms to either kneel on the ground or use their towel. Both options are rather gross as I noted the floor was pretty dirty. The furniture for bottoms to prop themselves on and wait for tops is sequestered away from the walkways, meaning fewer people are coming by to check you out. I would sincerely appreciate more knee rests and more furniture in visible areas for bottoms to utilize. Notes for those new to bathhouses: 1. Slowly reaching at a guy's towel/crotch is the easiest and quickest way to engage him. 2. Be prepared to be rejected as it is inevitable, especially considering the fact that some guys are purely there to spectate. 3. Been coming here off and on for a few years, before and after the remodel. Overall, it's fun - the attendees are usually a pretty mixed bag of all variety of men, and the volume of guys will vary pretty wildly depending on when you go: I've been on weekday mornings and it's been empty... and I've been on weekday mornings when it's been busy. Kinda hard to predict, but safe bets are around lunchtime, after work/early evening, or pretty much all weekend. If you want a room, show up early - especially on weekends - and/or get a VIP membership. The place is very clean, especially after the remodel; I've never caught so much as athletes foot from the facility, which is more than I can say about my gym's shower room. Folks have noted staff can be rude - I've found them abrupt, dry, and humorless, to be sure, but I haven't had any overt rudeness. That said, abrupt and humorless doesn't earn many tips, either, which may contribute to their humorlessness. They do have a parking lot, but after getting my car dinged twice - someone damn near took off my side mirror last time - I'll stick to finding parking in the neighborhood, which feels reasonably safe, even at night. Still, always be wary of your surroundings - I wouldn't say their parking lot is any safer than the street, especially since there's no direct access from the club to their lot. I don't come often - especially with a virus that likes to travel on water vapor bouncing around - and the times I've come have always been feast-or-famine (which ain't the club's fault) - but despite these things, a dry staff, and bad drivers in their parking lot, it's pretty decent. To be completely honest, I haven't visited Steamworks since before the original COVID lockdown, but I feel that I need to update my rating based on how they handled the lockdowns and their steadfast determination to remain in business despite the administrative challenges associated with reopening as quickly and safely as possible, making sure to follow all of the county health regulations and guidelines. Also, holding on to a business when there was absolutely no revenue being generated for such a long time deserves MAJOR recognition/appreciation. Even though the club was closed, they still had to make monthly mortgage or rent payments, insurance payments, property taxes pay all utilities and all business license expenses. Overall, this is a good, clean facility. All on one level, there are the usual bathhouse amenities -- steamroom, sauna, jacuzzi, private rooms, gym, lockers. There is also a large play room maze area with glory holes, blowjob ramps etc. I found the staff to be cordial, if not friendly, and the facilities to be clean and modern. There is not outdoor space however, and the facility is unusually dark inside -- even for a bathhouse. I found it difficult to spend an extended period of time there -- the lack of any natural light feels a bit claustrophobic to me. It's been a while since I've left a Yelp review (about 4 years) for Steamworks. I'm a semi-regular attendee averaging about once a month, and have been for 10+ years. I'm not sure what's going on with Steamworks Berkeley, but it seems to be on the decline. Here are several things (changes) I've noticed from years past. I'm not sure if they are having a hard time finding new employees, but staffing seems to be on the decline. There seems to be fewer people working the front desk, which results in longer waiting times/lines to check in or out especially during their busier/popular times. The club's overall cleanliness seems to be suffering as well. Used abandoned wet towels everywhere (in the lockeroom, around wet areas, restrooms), not being picked up. The restrooms are almost always a disaster - not being kept up very well, including more abandoned wet towels and toilet paper and puddles of questionable (post-douche?) water on the floor. These things go unattended for many hours at a time. Then there are the maintenance issues. The jacuzzi jets have not been working for a least a month that I know of (weren't working a month ago and again not when I visited again last night). And the Jacuzzi itself is in desperate need of being refinished/replastered. They did a refinishing of it several years ago but something was done wrong, as not too long after that the plastered finish (the floor and where you sit) began to bubble off, so now it's a very rough, cratered surface everywhere, not very comfortable to sit on. Then there's the main open showers. Although there are six shower heads, for the last couple years, no more than four of them, sometimes only 3, will function at any one time. A couple of them have consistently been broken for many months with no repair. Some of the shower disfunction is the adjustability of the water temperature - sometimes the temp control will not work, and all you can get is scalding hot water, or uncomfortably cool water. They also made a change not too long ago that allows the showers to run for only about 10 seconds at a time, when before they used to be timed to run about 30-seconds which was reasonable. There's something strange with the lighting circuit in the Sauna. Lighting is nice most of the time, but occasionally, the lights go out, and will be off for 20-30 minutes, then come back on again, both for no apparent reason. And the steamroom, I can't figure out what they're doing with the steam. They keep changing the steam level. Sometimes I go and there's a nice consistent gentle steam that keeps the room lightly steamed. Other times the steam is adjusted to be like a blast-furnace from hell, and I can only stand to be in that intense heat for about 2 minutes - not relaxing at all. And not to mention with the room that full of steam, you cannot see 2 feet in front of you so can't see anyone else in the room, which makes interactions difficult. There is a lot of good about Steamworks Berkeley. But I just wish they would pay more attention to these items to maintain their reputation as a clean, decent, safe place to play. read more

As far as bath houses/saunas goes, this place is great. I'm a weekday morning/afternoon visitor as I spend weeknights and weekends with my partner. Still there is always something going on here unlike many other places in different cities. It's clean and has been renovated several times over the years. The clientele is varied. Like other reviewers on here have noted, Steamworks is definitely a mixed bag. Other than the Watergarden in San Jose, it really is the only game in town - too far for a guy who lives in the north bay. The renovation project is FINALLY done and the place is back to normal. This place is best in the late afternoons, early evenings, and weekends. If you go outside of peak times, it can be a real gamble because there are just not enough men in the club. I've never had attitude from any of the workers, and they are very good about keeping the place clean and tidy. As long as you're not too picky, you should able to find some play. There is a series of rooms towards the front of the club, and glory holes in the back. If you happen to get there and it's too slow, you can kill some time in the spa or steamroom. If I lived closer, I would probably get a regular membership. It's a place to hook up, so drop the attitude and have some realistic expectations. read more
