Like other reviewers on here have noted, Steamworks is definitely a mixed bag. Other than the Watergarden in San Jose, it really is the only game in town - too far for a guy who lives in the north bay. The renovation project is FINALLY done and the place is back to normal. This place is best in the late afternoons, early evenings, and weekends. If you go outside of peak times, it can be a real gamble because there are just not enough men in the club. I've never had attitude from any of the workers, and they are very good about keeping the place clean and tidy. As long as you're not too picky, you should able to find some play. There is a series of rooms towards the front of the club, and glory holes in the back. If you happen to get there and it's too slow, you can kill some time in the spa or steamroom. If I lived closer, I would probably get a regular membership. It's a place to hook up, so drop the attitude and have some realistic expectations. read more

My partner and I have been going to Steamworks off and on for the past 17 years, before we were together I had been going on my from 1992. Over the years it really has changed, from the configuration of the "Outback" to the front of the facility. I have found going during the day time, it seems to be a very distinct crowd. Not to many I am interested in hooking up with. We find that when they have a themed event it is much better. We enjoy going to the Bears, Baths and Beyond. We drive up from San Jose to get there around 10am before the event starts just to get a room. The one thing I find kind of annoying is they offer a "VIP" pass. That means if you are on a waiting list for a room and you are next to be called, someone with a VIP pass can come in and totally bump you and get your room. I understand it is about money, but when you drive a distance it can be a little off putting and annoying. I will say the staff has improved over the years, there was a time that when you walked in and up the stairs the sheer look from the staff was so mean you did not want to converse with them. They had a way of making you feel so little and such trash checking in. Never smiled, and GOD forbid you should ask a question about the rooms. The new remodel is nice, easy to get around, the place as really cleaned up. One thing that is really difficult is that it is SOOOOOOOO hot in there. There are times that you feel like falling over from the heat, you go into your room and lay down just to lay there sweat all over your bed. The only cool place is in the back around the play area. The Bears, Baths and Beyond is an enjoyable event, they do bring in Pizza and have drinks, it's a nice little bonus. This last time my partner and went, we arrived and all the rooms were sold out, so we went on a wait list. In the mean time we were assigned lockers. I walked around and there were men blocking both directions getting to my locker. I asked this one man who was just standing there in front of his open locker if I could get past him. He looked me right in the eyes and did not move, I asked again and it was the same thing. Just flat out rude!. So I thought ok....hell with you, I pushed past him and in doing so my back pack hit his open locker door and slammed it shut. When my room was finally available I went to my locker and retrieved my belongings and went to the front desk to pay for my room. When I got there, one of the guys behind the counter came out and wanted to talk to me. He said they there were people complaining about me and how rude I was slamming their locker doors with my back pack. I laughed and told the guy what actually happened and he said that he understood because the guy that turned me in has issues with people every time he is there. Reading the reviews I find it funny what the expectations people have of a Gay Bathhouse. It is what it is, The Steamworks is not the Hilton, like I said I have been going many years, I have always had a good time, it is what you make of it. As with everything it can be hit and miss, it's just how it is. Just be respectful, be nice, smile, try saying hello, engage people, you might find you will have a better time than you expected. I like this place, I mean it is a business, sometimes it is slow sometimes it is busy. Sometimes I get lucky and I get what I want, sometimes not so much, but it is what it is. Steamworks also had signage stating that they are in the 4th stage of remodel (they started off with two). The VIP membership does allow you to be placed on the wait list for other rooms if the place gets full. Rooms by the pool are hot (because of the steam from the jacuzzi and the steamroom). However, when you do switch to another room, you don't get credit for it from the time you pay - for example, if you rent a basic room for XX (whatever the price is that day) and stay there for 3 hours, and you switch to a larger room, you don't get the larger room for 8 hours, you only get it for the time you first rented a room, which would be another 5 hours. The prices go up on the weekends, and the rooms get pretty full weekends, as well as on days like Folsom. For the most part, it's a decent enough place to hookup - I just think that someone, at some point, will do better. read more

This place is just OK. It is very clean, but run down. While proximity to the city, Berkeley and Oakland gives them a good and diverse size crowd it isn't a particularly hip crowd. The steam room smells funky and has for years. I don't know if any method exists for overcoming the smell. The hot tubs water goes through cycles of seeming clean, to seeming less clean, and always reeks strongly of chlorine. Bring some moisturizer. The rooms vary greatly in quality. Sometimes the TV is well positioned, other times it is not. Some of the rooms have flat screens with narrow view angles and are placed so high that the screen isn't visible from the bed. An unfortunate mistake by the purchaser. Video quality is often poor and grainy/staticy. Unlike many bath houses Steamworks does not have an outdoor area. There is no room. The weight room is small, but has a fairly complete set of barbells/dumb bells. The machines appear to be fairly well maintained. The weight room is placed in a way that can cause passerbys to group up and stare as they pass onto the rear dark/play area. A highly recommend the monthly bear party (check their site, I believe it is the third or fourth saturday from 1-6pm.) read more

Since it looks like I will be providing the most up to date review for Steamworks for 2014, I will try to be as detailed and thorough as I can. I went to Steamworks on Sunday evening, March 9, 2014. There were about 132 people and the wait times for rooms weren't that bad. I was impressed by how clean it is there (although you may step on a stray condom or some "junk"). The music was good and the guys were sexy. I was surprised at how high the sexual temperature is here. If you want somewhere to relax and get your needs satisfied, this is the place to do it. There were actually a pretty good amount of attractive guys and I even got a number. The only improvement that I could see this place needing is more hot water in the showers and more places to get towels and lube, etc. It was lukewarm when I had went in the first time, and the same the second.
