I ordered the fish and chips and WOW -- the fish was crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside, and not greasy at all. The fries were classic and paired perfectly with the tartar sauce. I also grabbed one of their margaritas that they poured over ice with a salted rim and lime -- super refreshing and honestly hit way better than I expected for a canned drink. The best part though? This place really surprised me. I chose it because it was a short half-mile walk from the El Rancho rail-runner station, and I wanted to not have to take another rideshare after eating. I didn't partake in any of their house beers on this visit, but there looked to be an ample selection. At first, a hostess told me I couldn't bring my water bottle in (literally a storebought jug of water) but another one saw my suitcase, and that I did not appear to be an alcoholic smuggling in a gallon of vodka, so she overruled the first and let me pass. Once seated, I had great service. The menu is mostly sandwiches, with a few salads, as well as apps to enjoy while having a drink or three. I ordered a Cubano because it sounded good based on someone elses review. Man... was it ever. First of all, it was HUGE HUGE HUGE. Totally overstuffed with ham and pulled pork, then complemented with swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard. While it isn't the absolute best Cubano I have ever had, it was very good, and certainly filling. Great value. The side salad was simple, fresh, and tasty with a good ranch. Was able to settle up quickly and walk to my train with twenty minutes to spare. I'd recommend this place for a bite to eat, a seemingly comfortable place to drink, and to any looking to pass the time while waiting on the nearby rail runner train. read more

I'm glad we finally made it to Steel Bender! We had to wait a few minutes for a table, but it didn't take long. I had an excellent Cubano - house-smoked pulled pork, sliced ham, pickles, Swiss cheese, mustard, and chipotle mayo on a ciabatta roll, pressed together. So good, and the housemade potato chips were outstanding. I enjoyed a Sparkfitter Amber with it. My husband had a bowl of hearty, spicy green chile stew which he liked very much. He really enjoyed the Shimmy to the Bee Gees rice lager, which didn't bother his gluten sensitivity. Service was great; our server helped my husband figure out what he could eat and drink and brought our goodies promptly. Had a chance to swing by Steel Bender this past weekend for their "Balloons & Brews" event. I definitely recommend heading there early as there was a line when we got there around 6:30 AM, they open at 7. They sell you a promise to watch the balloons while you indulge in a beer, mimosa or one of their many food offerings! They had a variety of pastries as well as breakfast burritos, we did not try the food although it looked good. I had a pumpkin ale and my friend had the mimosa. I honestly thought the balloons would be closer but they didn't head towards us. All in all it was a good experience. I dunno if I'll go again tbh. Nothing wrong with the service or drinks, I really thought there would be more balloons but that's on me lol. Also they did not charge to get in, which was nice. The patio is large but everyone immediately took all the tables which is another reason to go early! read more

We tried Steel Bender tonight for the first time as visitors to Albuquerque from Omaha. The patio was definitely our favorite part and we were lucky enough to be seated out there. Our waitress was friendly and very attentive. She made sure to check on us frequently and ensured that we had everything that we needed. They have a great beer menu, though I wish their sweet cider was a bit sweeter. For our appetizer, we chose the nachos. I thought they were loaded really nicely with a variety of toppings and none were soggy, which was great! For my meal, I chose the BLT. It was pretty good though I wish there was a little more sauce on it. I got fries for my side and I really liked those. The nachos were served on a sheet tray and were huge. They came with a side of salsa, sour cream and some delicious jalapeños on top. They were so delicious and hit the spot perfectly. Steel Bender is ALWAYS a hit! It's our go-to when we want good local food, comfortable (kid friendly) atmosphere and good drinks! You can't go wrong from the fried green chile strips, to the kids mini burgers or chicken tenders. Their fries are so crunchy and pair well with their Steel Bender burger (topped with a delicious fried egg, cooked your way), to their BYO grilled chicken sandwhich. Their pulled pork is a hubby favorite also. I am personally a sucker for their wings (dry rub is honestly so delish and our fave but if you like a sauced wing, you can go wrong with their asiago Parmesan I think it's called, or their buffalo for some spice) and their chicken Caesar salad is the best I've ever had to be honest! The staff is always friendly and even on busy nights the service is exceptional and efficient. Good amount of TVs for the sports lover but not overwhelmingly a "sports bar". They have an awesome patio and are dog friendly! Hands down 10/10. Then moved us to a bigger table, then said they need that table for another party so they put 2 tablets together and moved us again. Called Steel Bender last week and ask to speak to a manager to give them a courtesy that we would be coming in around 11 am on Sunday with a group of about 30-35 people. The manager cut me off immediately and said they could not accommodate a group larger than 25. Which we understood. However, the interaction with management was super unhelpful and were repeatedly told that half our party would need to be in attendance before we could be seated and again, they were not willing to have a group larger than 25. This is my ABQ Beer Passport review for Steel Bender. First appearance is that this is a restaurant that brews beer. But, after sitting at the voluminous bar, they are a serious taproom that is also a restaurant. The large number of tvs and advertising on the menus for stoopid NFL leads me to believe that weekends are for football fans. Catering to NFL fans and karaoke take away from the taproom experience IMHO. Their menu is full of bar food favorites we did not try. Service was really good with bartender Amber fast and friendly working around the bar for about 20 patrons. They offer about 14 of their own brews. 40% IPAs (boo) left a few beers to try that weren't sours or fruity. I enjoyed their Blue Bullet Stout which wasn't as bitter as the advertised 40 IBUs. I tried a taste of their Sparkfitter Amber ale, which came out of the tap with a lot of head. But then drinking it, it seemed a bit flat. As a "pub-style bitter" at 5 IBUs, I could see drinking more, but when we said we were ready for another round, she assumed we wanted the same beers we first ordered. My friend (who has a love for IPAs) did not care for their Skull Bucket IPA but he loved their canned (not on tap) Policy IPA enough to take some cans home with him. They have their own parking lot, a large patio (with a tv or 2) that faces the Sandias and enough room for large parties. Cans, growlers, and crowlers to go. Don't know about a happy hour or deals on certain days. I like the taproom enough to hang but wish they had a few more none IPA/sour offerings. read more

Drove 15 miles to get some great green chile strips and delectable fish (didn't know there was one by the airport duh?) only to be extremely disappointed by both. I have been to this restaurant multiple times and have had a wonderful food experience. It seems though to-go orders do not garner the same attention and quality of in-house diners. The fish was soggy and looked like it was simply nuked instead of deep fried. The French fries were cold, hard, and uber greasy and barely edible. The green chile strips were stuck together and limp as a piece of pasta. The food honestly looks like it had been at the bottom of the fryer or like the rolling hot dog in a glass case sitting on a convenience store counter. I should have known something was awry because my to-go order was ready in less than 10 minutes; didn't think I needed to check for quality since my prior visits were nothing like this. I spent $55 + $10 tip for greasy, undercooked, soggy, cold food?! The real kicker is there was hardly anyone in the restaurant! I ended up reheating everything in my air fryer simply for the stuff to be deemed edible. Won't be patronizing this place again anytime in the near future. I considered calling them however, past experience told me they would simply provide apologetic lip service and nothing else. If you decide to eat here, dining in would be my advice. read more
