One is the darker bar area but we were seated in a room full of full length windows that opened. I had a flight of their beers and enjoyed them all. For lunch I had their red chile bbq pork sandwich while my wife had the enchiladas. The food is a mix of Southern soul food and New Mexican standards. WHAT NO RIBS!?!? I'd seen the tv commercials lately about Nexis and boasting about their RIBS so we came to eat some. But, to our surprise this Nexis does NOT have ribs! Only the other one in the South Valley (where we never go) has them. The tv commercials didn't say that. I did let the servers know this bc I felt it was false advertising. We got a Flight of 4 different beers and "settled" on a fried fish w salad which was ok and their grilled catfish tacos which you had to eat w a fork bc they were too messy to pick up w your fingers.. They tasted ok but the salsa and a pink sauce (?) helped to give them more flavor. The atmosphere was ok and the Friday evening crowd was arriving. We ate inside and our server, Sophia, was very good. It didn't take long to get our dinners except my partner's salad took forever! The salads are included w the meals. My salad was different and good which was a Blackeye pea, corn, & more ingredients. My experience there was disappointing since I wanted ribs and not "soggy" fish tacos. The chicken batter seems to change. I was here on soft opening day over 10 years ago and the fried chicken was good, but different. Then it improved to be some of the best fried chicken in Albuquerque. Today the chicken was a little greasier than I recalled and it wasn't as crunchy. Top notch service set the stage for a delightful lunchtime experience. Cozy yet well lit, the rooms were comfortable and clean. And the food ... It was hard to decide what to eat. I opted for two appetizers (gumbo and greens) which did not disappoint. My friend ordered four pieces of fried chicken (not spicy) and side. Four pieces were so that she would have plenty to take home. My taste was so good I want to go back and get a sandwich or a meal. The only drawback was that they don't serve coffee anymore. My first time at Nexus Brewery but my guests have been here before. The consensus from the group was that the food was very good overall. Most of us had the fried chicken and people thought the hot chicken was very spicy but wished the breading stayed on the chicken. I thought the flavor was good but I wished the seasoning went deeper into the meat. The fried catfish was also excellent with a milder flavor because they use a Vietnamese catfish. We loved the sides including the Mac and cheese, collard greens, and mashed potatoes. The fried okra was also legit. Overall, a really good restaurant with a variety of beers made in house. We went for the Gumbo and the Red Beans and Rice. The Red beans and rice were too spicy! The heat of the spices, drowned out any other flavor. The Gumbo was the same, too spicy, no flavor. 16 years of total support is now DONE!!! I will NEVER return or give them any more business and I will certainly not give them any favorable recommendations - EVER, NEVER, EVER again. Today's experience was the last straw. The place was packed inside and there were only TWO "servers" for maybe 30 - 40 tables plus the outside patio area (another 7 tables) plus the bar (maybe 25 seats). Completely understaffed. Plenty of available seats at the bar, a completely unoccupied patio, and at least four open tables that I saw. Yet they refused to seat me and my wife, turned away three other groups totaling 11 people, and said there was at least a 30 minute wait time to be seated or to place an order. The "manager", she called herself "Liz" was extremely rude, condescending, obnoxious, and useless. She had absolutely no control over the kitchen staff or the two available servers, or the "I've only been working here a week" host guy who was supposed to be greeting customers and seating people. So, we did a "to go" order. The "manager", Liz finally came to pull the "host kid"'ass out of the fire because he did not know the menu, how to operate the ordering system, could not process my credit card, or find me ( a loyal 16 year customer) in their loyalty system database. We had to place the food order with the kid, but he could not ring up a beer purchase. So I went to the bar - and waited a full 6 minutes - to order and pay for one beer that I could take out onto the completely empty patio while I waited for my food order They did not give me any "loyalty points" for my $62 order. When I asked why, "Liz"' - the "manager" - could not answer and said a few other words that I will not publish on this platform. "Liz" the manager finally brought out our food order ( 25 minutes after the order was placed with the kid) and literally threw the two plastic bags into table and turned to walk away without uttering a word. I stopped her to ask her name so I could directly call or contact Ken Carson, the owner of the business who I have known since he bought the building 17 years ago. "Liz" started yelling and throwing insults -'calling me "a nasty old man who has far too many problems", "a continual complainer whose business they don't need", and a few other things that again I am not going to publish. So based on this absolutely horrible experience, I am only left to assume that Ken and Nexus either cannot find a suitable person to hire for a customer-facing managerial position, or they simply don't care about a 16-year established costumer, or that they have so much business that they don't have to worry about referrals. So, until I receive a direct response from Ken Carson, my days of patronizing and referring people to Nexus are OVER AND DONE! It has been a good ride over the years and I have always enjoyed the great food, the friendly staff, and the beer But there are other good food and beer establishments who would like to receive my money and continued patronage. First, I will address how amazing the manager JD is! He greeted us as we walked in and when we mentioned it was our first time he took his time to recommend some of his favorites. He did not steer us wrong I'll tell you what ! lol we ordered a few diff things and our FAVORITE was the catfish nuggets, his top recommendation. The vibe is amazing and customer service is great across the board. I will say the fried chicken was great aside from lack of seasoning but they serve hot sauce and other things you can do like their Nashville coating to spice things up. Most of the menu is non-BBQ with a heavy nod to soul food, a middle sized nod to standard bar and grill and a tiny nod to New Mexican cuisine. I went with the BBQ in a sandwich straight up. The sandwich was fine and had all sorts of fancy stuff on top. But frankly, the bare naked BBQ was so damm good That putting it even into a very well conceived good sandwich seemed to be to be a crime. Nexus's BBQ is heavily sauced - and heavily sauced in its basic conception. I suppose you might try to get the meat with no sauce. But the sauce really is the "secret sauce" here. The meat in the sauce is die and go to heaven good. What makes the stuff so magical is ... * * * Actually, I don't have the slightest idea. But if I ate Nexus BBQ every day for the rest of my life, It would be a happy life. * * * For the record - I did a short-term seasonal beer from their brewery - an Oktoberfest. It was first rate. It was also perfect for BBQ. * * * For the record, I also got the New Mexico green chili as a side dish. I can get French Fries any time. Later on - at another establishment - I would have a mediocre New Mexico Green chili dish. At Nexus- the green chili is just fine. NOTHING is as good as the BBQ ... period stop. Nexus was first on our list of places to dine at in Albuquerque. We watched the episode of Diners & Drive-Ins when Guy Fieri interviewed Ken Carson the owner. After watching that episode and seeing the New Mexican soul food, we knew we had to visit! First off, the place gets packed but we hit the right time because it was only a fifteen minute wait. We started off with two Mexican Lagers that we chose after requesting a sample. As far as food, we ordered the Southern fried breast dinner which included mashed potatoes and greens. We also ordered a side of red beans & rice with pork belly and sausage and Mac n cheese. The chicken breasts were huge and the batter was divine! Albuquerque always amazes with the breadth of its culinary offerings, and I had never heard of this Southern-accented place until I searched for "lunch near me" one recent afternoon. I'm glad I tried it out, because it's a find I'd like to try again for its specialties. In a bit of a time crunch, I went with a go-to order of a burger I could build from options on the menu. The thick, smoky, and flavorful burger patty came with my requested pepper jack cheese and green chile, plus all the regular fixings, and a hefty side of tasty shoestring fries. It's a little tricky to find, even when there isn't major construction right outside on the Interstate, but they have helpful signs to guide you to the hidden parking lot. Seating is split between a bar / high-top / table space up front and a larger dining room accessed through a passageway. I sat up front and didn't get a good look at the other space. Acoustics are a little bouncy but not horrendous, and there's plenty of natural light through tall windows. The server was friendly and efficient, the food came promptly, and I ended up saving some of the burger and most of the fries to enjoy later. Wings were on our mind as we were using the mapping feature on yelp to find the best place for wings near closing time. The traditional buffalo wings met expectations. Another great dining experience at Nexus Brewery. We stopped in for a late lunch and had a lovely time. We also found out that we aren't the only Santa Feans that make a pilgrimage to Nexus when we visit ABQ. Overheard another customer telling our waiter that she stops in to dine and take some food home to Santa Fe, too. I usually try to work my way through a good menu, but after I had the chicken dinner with mashed potatoes/gravy and collard greens, I have stopped. I tell myself I'm gonna try the catfish. Then the chicken dinner just comes out of my mouth when the server asks my order. All three elements are exceptional. Chicken is crispy, potatoes are creamy, and the collards are perfectly seasoned and delicious. I took half of my meal home to enjoy for supper. My husband was smart. He had the chicken and waffles in the restaurant and ordered gumbo/shrimp and red beans/rice to take home for later. Wish I had done that with the catfish! We also brought an order of grilled fish tacos home for our daughter. That's her favorite Nexus offering. She enjoyed every morsel. I discovered nexus brewing on Yelp and had planned to come here and then I heard some people talking about it in the foodie forums as well so I decided to give it a shot finally. Let me tell you, the fried chicken was the best I've ever had in Albuquerque, hands down. The chicken was soft and juicy, the breading was full of spice and oil, a true Cajun chicken delight haha. It was out of this world amazing. This deserves 5 stars hands down. The fried zucchini was not like any other restaurant I have been to. You can tell they cut the zucchini and create their own breading. When you bite into the zucchini it's soft, and juicy and you can taste that zucchini flavor while you're dipping it in the dressing. I asked for chipotle ranch on the side and I'm glad I did because I think it's a better pairing than the regular ranch it comes with. Definitely 5 star dish I would come back just for this! I thought their Mac and cheese had green chili in it because everyone told me about their Mac and cheese. But it turned out to be plain. They didn't seem to have another Mac and cheese option that I saw. But it was a decent Mac. Maybe I would have liked it more with a bit of flavor on it like spice. It was a solid 3.75'star Mac, with some chili it could be 4.5 stars! The chicken chicharrón was pretty good. I like how it sort of did mock a chicharrón texture which is probably hard to do with chicken. I almost feel like rather than use the same seasoning on it they should make a special dipping sauce for it, something bomb and unique. This was like a solid 3.5 star dish. The fried pickles . Hmm, how do I feel about this. Well I love pickles, so to me it was still good enough to eat for sure. But it was missing the crunch you would expect. If I were the restaurant I would do pickle spears rather than circular cuts and I would more deeply batter it. Maybe then you'll get a nice crunch and texture would improve. I heard someone else complain about this on Yelp, but then the owner responded to them saying the pickle isn't normally like that. So based on that response I tried it. Cajun chicharrones were good! One thing that surprised me were how filling they are because traditional chicharrones are smaller and crispier. We dined in the Bar Section of the restaurant. There's, also, a comfortable looking Outdoor Dining Area near the entrance. Parking was adequate, the Menu was 'comfort food friendly' and the Staff was Madd-Cool!! Our Server, "Marissa", made us feel like we had real life V.I.P. status! Attentive and REAL! Impressive to us, both! We, even, got a table visit from the Owner, Mr. Ken Carson!! He rolls his sleeves up & gets right "in the game", along w the Staff! "Salute!" to ya, Ken C.! Our meals were exactly what we'd been told by friends before we visited. "Just like Momma would make". Food was delicious, atmosphere was relaxed and prices were affordable! We didn't indulge in their tempting selection of beers because we had to drive the Interstate route (northbound) to Santa Fe (NM), afterwards. PLEASE...Don't Drive DRUNK!! They have a solid menu of soul food. I got the 2-piece NM hot chicken for $16.50. It was an extra $3.50 to substitute fries and get fried pickles. It was pretty sad for hot chicken. It was not spicy. Maybe I should have just gotten the chicken & waffles. Their award-winning beers were pretty good. I liked the imperial cream ale $6.50 (12 oz) better than the honey chamomile wheat $7.50 (20 oz). I want to point out that service was extremely slow. We waited around to get our order taken, then waited for beers to be brought out. We asked for water and never got any. I paid with a credit card. I have a photo of my signed receipt. When I checked my bank statement later, I was charged an extra dollar. Best dining experience in ABQ so far! The wait staff made us feel extremely well taken care of, from the moment we sat down. Restroom was immaculate. Drinks: Órale Mexican lager was the table favorite, and I liked the Honey Chamomile Wheat. The only one disliked was the Cream Ale (too thin/light), but our friend ordered the Cream Imperial for his second round and was much happier. Apps: Fried okra FTW! Paired great with Chipotle ranch. Would not order the fried pickles again because they're (too) thinly sliced coins rather than sandwich style or spears, which means you get more batter than pickle. Meals: Husband and I agreed that the fried catfish was on the salty side, but the seasoning had a lot of good flavor and even better crunch, and the tartar sauce complimented well. Brew Something Local brewery and eatery that features what they call "New Mexico Soul Food" and has been featured on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" (S18:E8) for their spicy fried chicken. Their burgers were also featured in Thrillist's "33 Best Burgers in America" and their bar as one of the "Best Cocktail Bars in the US," per Food & Wine magazine. And that's not to look past their namesake beers, as they too have been awarded multiple "Best in Show" awards at various competitions throughout the years. Breweries and soul food are both items squarely in my wheelhouse, so visiting Nexus was an almost no-brainer at this point. The Good: *Great selection of beers and cider; their award-winning Beam Me Up Scotty Ale (8.5%ABV) was fantastic, as well as their high ABV (10.9%ABV) Lush Imperial Stout, which was smooth and packed a nice punch. *Service was friendly and did the appropriate amount of interactions. *Fried Pickles (aka Frickles) were cut razor-thin and flash-fried in a light coating, making them a bit odd at first texturally, but once we got used to them, we found them to be very moreish. *The Fried Chicken breasts lived up to the hype as it was crunchy, juicy and spicy--altho, I got the "New Mexico Hot" upgrade (see below) I didn't find them insufferably spicy, but a mouth tingling The Meh: *$2 upcharge for "extra New Mexico hot" is a sorta strange upcharge. I've seen a few places charge extra, and I've always thought it was a weird luxury tax of sorts, kinda like the infuriating oatmilk tax and brown rice upcharge. *These weird NM laws about only getting one beer at a time and a max of three per visit are quite perplexing for us outsiders, but I guess I get it on some level. The Ugly: *Parking can be a bit of an issue, as they have a smallish shared lot that can fill up quickly. This is my ABQ Beer Passport review for Nexus Brewery. We decided to visit Nexus based on the Yelp reviews and the photos of the comfort food they offer. We did not know that they were having their 14th anniversary celebration today, so that was a bonus. Service was great and Debbie did a good job attending to us. My only complaint was that we ran dry several times but I imagine that since the place was packed, it wasn't the norm. The red head hostess tried to seat us in the "kiddie" room (even though there was 8+ empty tables in the bar and other room as well as 4 on the patio. We balked at that as we; a) wanted to see and hear the band that was setting up, b) I personally hate dealing with children at any brewery and there was a family with children in there, c) we did not have any children with us, d) the "kiddie" room smelled like dirty diapers and, e) this dank room is an abomination and Nexus should be embarrassed for trying to sit any paying customers (without children) in this room! We ended up on the patio, which was great and had decent views of the Sandias. The beer we sampled was fantastic! 4 out of 5 stars. We tried the Genesis pale ale, Honey Chamomile Wheat (and took home a couple of 4-packs), Oracle Mexican lager, Imperial Cream ale (9.5% and took home a couple of 4-packs), regular Cream ale, and the Blood Orange cider (7%). I really enjoyed the Cream ale. The 20 oz. was only .50 more and had I known, would have ordered all 20s! Nexus loses a star because they have a restaurant license, which puts a stupid-ass NM limit to 3 beers per person. We had a DD and were disappointed that we didn't get the chance to try their Chocolate porter or their Scottish ale. The other negative was that their list of "seasonal" beers were all IPAs! So they definitely cater to the IPA hipsters, leaving the rest of us their regular beers. I can understand a (small) percentage of IPAs on a seasonal menu, but with all of the other breweries in the area and the 3 beer limit, there is not a lot of draw to return. They can thank their brewmaster. The food was southern comfort food with some having the obligatory green chile added. We had the fish and chips, green chile, fried chicken sandwich, and the NM nachos. All was very good and it seems that the emphasis is more on the food side. We noticed a lot of door-dash to go orders going out. So, minus a star for being a restaurant that brews beer instead of a brewery that serves food. And, the IPA laden "seasonal" tap menu that really put me off. read more

Service was no bueno. Saw her twice. She served our drinks and we didn't see her till I asked another server if we could order. I went to the bar for refills after 26 minutes waiting, fish and chips were mieh, nachos was good. I wouldn't recommend or return. Bathroom floors were sticky and toilet seat about to slide off. Absolutely no customer service until we were walking out and a male, maybe a manager said "have a great day folks" lol Ummm yeah maybe check in your tables with those prices. read more

We came in for a cold beer after the temperature. I turned warm and we were out on our motorcycles. The place is very busy, but not totally packed and the weight staff is still very attentive! The place is clean with a very cool vibe! Bathroom to clean and the food looks awesome! We already ate so not much to say about the food. Next time because we will definitely come back! It does not appear like they chance on the portions. The beer selection is pretty good and trying a flight/, samples was an ambitious tasking! Nonetheless, all the beers are good! read more
