10/10! Point #1 - The Glenmont store was one of the few bike shops open on a Monday afternoon. It may not seem like much, but bike shop hours aren't always the most convenient, so the mere fact that they were open and that I could walk in and make a purchase within a matter of minutes goes a long way. Point #2 - They had what I needed in stock! In an age where most things get ordered from an online retailer, or you visit a brick-and-mortar location only to learn that they, too, will have to send away for what you want to buy, having an item available to purchase and walk out the door with in the same visit is so satisfying. A blast from the past. Point #3 - They accommodated a price match request! I called looking for a Garmin head unit. When I mentioned that it was going for $50 less from a number of other retailers, they owner didn't even hesitate to say they could do it for the same price. Unbelievable - totally blew me away. So much goodwill gained in that moment. I'm happy to spend much more than that $50 difference in future just for the willingness to do the price match. I would always rather spend money at a local bike shop than Amazon or Competitive Cyclist, so thank you to Steiner's for making it an easy decision on my part. Point #4 - Bryce V! Bryce and I had a really enjoyable chat while he rang me out. this is the kind of bike shop where you are there for them, not them being there for you. If you don't know exactly what you're talking about what you want and what you need they are certainly not going to help. i Had maintenance down on a bike I purchased at steiners and when I called back to ask questions about the maintenance that was done and i was very obvious I was an annoyance when I asked if they checked the bottom bracket, a known fail point on the marlin 5, when the tech HUNG UP ON ME when I was trying to summarize their practice. prior to this incident I came in to consider a new e-bike and the salesperson was significantly less helpful than a handful of google searches. 2012 I purchased all brand new snowboard gear at the Kinderhook location and had a great experience. Fast forward to 2019 - I've been to the Glenmont location for bike stuff and ski stuff half a dozen times. As other reviewers have posted (and I hope the owner/employees read this)... the typical greeting and assistance is condescending and short. I imagine locals are coming into your establishment to buy things ... which I've done many times. Why not be happy to see them!? No one has ever said "hello, how can I help you today"... I have to play a game of .. wait around and ask someone for help. E v e r y time. "Yep" ... has been the typical response when I say "thanks!".. Skiing and biking are both so much fun! I've been to shops all over the country where that vibe and positivity is crystal clear... Here in Glenmont there's a cloud of something over the staff and a bad tone towards walk-ins. I wanted to acknowledge the truly outstanding customer service I received today from Dave and the other bike tech at Steiner's today. This is a review of the Glenmont store. They lost a customer tonight. The web site says open until 8. We walked in a few minutes before 6 and immediately caught a vibe from the young woman behind the counter... "Bill (?) in the back and can help you"... she then packed up and left. Bill (?) wasn't any more helpful... "what are you looking for?... We have a minute or so" Oh, are you closing, I said? Your web site says 8:00? "That's wrong" "I hope you aren't expecting to ride a bike out of here today, because they are all backordered until December, or even next spring." No Bill, I am aware that there are supply chain issues with bikes... thanks for the info. I actually came in expecting that an expert bike shop might help me make informed decision about what I want/need and what might be reasonably available in the marketplace... Once again a small business demonstrates why its getting its butt kicked by big box stores and online retailers. How disappointing. If you want to spend a lot of money and pay a lot of hidden fees, feel free to do business here. I am really upset with the service I received and hope others will head my warning. If you want full details of my experience read further. I met with the "Master Bike Guru" a month before Tri Club training began to get an idea of how much it would cost to make my mountain bike suitable for road racing. After telling me why he wouldn't want to use a mountain bike with road tires and how much better I would feel racing on one of the $1000 bikes they had in the store, he finally told me he could change the tires, give the bike a tune up, and spend an hour fine tuning the bike to my body measurements for around $100. Because he knew I was new to biking, I would have appreciated him explaining that "$21 for tires" meant a single tire... which did not include the tube, another $7.50, and labor to install the tire, $12, for a grand total of $40.50 to change EACH tire from a mountain bike tire to road tire. So, to someone who knows nothing about bikes... I just went from spending $21 on "new tires" to spending $81. Imagine why I might be an unsatisfied customer for just this alone. When I picked up my bike, my old shifters were replaced with new shifters. I didn't receive a call asking if I wanted him to replace them. I wasn't informed that I would be responsible to pay for whatever they decided to replace on my bike. It would have been nice if someone called and said "your shifters need to be replaced, here are a couple options, here are the prices, which ones would you like to go with?" The basic tune-up. After calling Jay back to get a better understanding of what I paid for, he explained the additional $4 fee for the tune up is to pay to replace their paper towels, degreasers, lubes, and cleaners. Makes you think they degreased your bike or lubed it, right? No, that's included in the $90 tune up... then why the fee? For cleaning the bike? My bike was returned to me with an additional pink sticky substance on the frame, dirty rims, and dirt, dust, and cat hair on the frame. My bike was never cleaned. And... if you're going to tell someone you gave them an extra 10% off because they are part of the Tri Club... give them the discount... Especially when they call back and nicely explain why they are unsatisfied and note the discount was never included. read more

I owned a hybrid road/mountain bike, "hybrid" meaning it didn't perform either function well, and because I wasn't properly fitted for it, the bike's usefulness was limited to throwing me over the handlebars. So it spent six grueling years in Le Tour de Basement. This spring I decided to get back into biking. Prior to the hybrid, I'd had crappy road bikes that were nonetheless able to take on century rides and longer, and I rode them until they literally fell apart. After going to a few shops, I returned to Steiner's and got a lovely price on a lovely Specialized Secteur Sport Compact, a perfect road bike for someone essentially starting over. I started dealing with Steiner's over the past several months, and I've had very good experiences here. They sell Specialized and S-Works bicycles, which are the bikes I use. They have incredibly knowledgeable staff who, for example, can explain to you the specific properties that differentiate two wheelsets, instead of just resorting to the generic "that one is the best they make" statement that a lot of other shops stick with. I was introduced to Steiner's (Glenmont) this past January by a few teammates of mine who live in the area. I'm a serious bike racer and live in NYC, so I basically have access to a million different bike shops all within reasonable travel distance. Unfortunately though, over the past several years, I have been thoroughly disappointed by the knowledge and service these shops provide. I have never felt like anyone cares about my bike as much as I do! I may live 2hrs and 30min away, but I'm up in the Albany area enough to justify doing phone business with Steiner's during the week and then in-person business on the weekends, when I need it. These guys have yet to let me down! Dave has always been available when I need to call and ask questions (and I have asked a lot of questions). I have made numerous purchases from Steiner's based on Dave's recommendations and I can say that I am 100% happy with all of them. He never upsold me and always made suggestions based on what I wanted! In addition to this, J has worked on every, single one of my bikes and I can confidentally state that he is by far the most knowledgeable mechanic I have ever done business with. He pretty much knows the answer to every question, but if he doesn't know the answer, he will spend a significant amount of time researching it. J also knows about bike racing, which is a huge plus when he's working on my bikes because he understands just how perfect they need to be in order to race on them. This is a great shop and I would recommend it to anyone, even if you're just up in the area for a race weekend. Great service, great people and always reliable! read more

my wife and i had a great experience here. a young man swapped a saddle off her bike with one we had brought in. (NOT bought at their store!) i'm pretty handy, but couldn't figure out how to make the new saddle fit. he was done in about 10 minutes, and made sure it was adjusted for height and angle for my wife. I will no longer frequent Steiners for any reason. Two years ago Garrick sold me a pair of ski boots that are too stiff for my size, age, and skiing ability. After trying to ski with them and consulting others, I told Garrick I could not flex them. With a straight face he said, "That is not a stiff boot." It is a Lange with a stiffness rating of 110. I weigh 120. 110 is a stiff boot. I had bought boots from him before without complaint. This time I felt he was "unloading" a boot. Be careful with hidden fees and costs. Got a bike tuned up once and asked them to mount two water bottle racks to the frame (which I had bought there). They put two Steiner's water bottles in the wracks, then tried to charge me $20 extra for the bottles. read more

I'm admittedly new to my Steiner's journey, but it's gotten off to a very good start. I went down a little over a week ago to a Trek ebike demo event to see what Trek had to offer. Passed a pleasant hour chatting with Dave and the Trek rep and trying a couple of excellent bikes. They made me an attractive offer if I wanted to buy one of the bikes I rode, but I never buy anything that expensive without a pre-cooling off period, so I thanked them and off I went. Back five days later, Dave still had the bike I wanted - they had apparently sold a bunch of them off that event, so good for them and Trek - and agreed cheerfully to accept the demo night price they'd offered. Had a good time chatting with them while Jay (I think) the tech/mechanic gave it the once over before releasing it. Nice selection of bikes and stuff - and of course over the next couple of months I will be picking up some of that stuff - and an overall excellent experience. We talked about a bunch of bike trails in the area that I was not familiar with, among other things. I ended up with a terrific Trek XM700+, which I would recommend to anyone. No one tried to upsell or add anything, it was all just the way I like it. Never felt leaned on to buy anything I wasn't ready to buy. read more

I was recently in the market for triathlon bikes for my wife and I and stopped into Steiner's to check out a Cervelo. I met their head tech Jay and was immediately impressed with his knowledge and helpfulness. We had been going to another local bike shop and they don't even come close to the personalized service I got here. I've always had a great experience with Steiner's, so when it came time to purchase my first tri-bike, it was a no-brainer that I would start my search there.  I've been a cyclist for nearly a decade and had done my research, so I had an idea of what I was looking for as I transition from a marathoner and cyclist to a triathlete.  I went to the Glenmont store and was immediately impressed with the willingness of the store associates to help me find exactly what I was looking for.  Dave took the time to present options that fit my needs and my budget, and two short weeks later I was in being fitted for my Specialized Shiv!   Jay is absolutely meticulous when it comes to the bike fit process.  He took as much time as we needed to make sure that everything was exactly right.  I would recommend Steiner's to anyone.  They carry top of the line products and have top of the line service. read more

I had a very good experience today at steiners sports in glenmont. I walked into the shop with my scott speedster road bike which would not shift at all. The staff were very friendly and to my amazement took my bike and put on the stand to figure out the problem. they stated that I had a bent chain ring. I then said to the tech how much for a new chain ring it sounds expensive. The tech then said he would try and fix the issue without replacing the chain ring. Within 5 minutes the problem was fixed and my bike shifted perfectly. The tech said that two of the teeth in the chan ring were bent and he was able to straighten them out. When he was finished I asked him what I owed him and he said nothing. I was very surprised I had never been treated that nice at any other bike shop in the area and ive been to all of them. Dont be hesitant to bring your bike there they are honest and glad to help you out. read more

My girlfriend and I both purchased ski boots from this store. The owner, Dave, was on sight and took as much time as we needed to get the right fit. He followed that up with custom foot beds and made sure everything was 100% before we left. We're both thrilled with our boots. Couldn't be happier with them. I grew up going to Steiner's.... Alas, the original Steiner's would roll their eyes at the service, or lack of, that patrons now receive. I purchased a bike rake, granted it was not a Thule/expensive rack, but the only one deemed that would fit my older car... When I went to pick it up, I asked if the young man could show me/help me put it on my car as my husband was out of town.. I was told it would cost me $50 and then he told me to read the directions and I should be able to do it! I do NOT call that "service" or even being amenable.... It would have taken him seconds to show me and worth a great deal in customer satisfaction. I am totally turned off by this shop, though the young man I ordered the rack from was very thoughtful... I will never go back there, nor will I steer any of my biking/or skiing friends in their direction..... Just a little bit of kindness goes a long, long way. Trek is very good bike. The bike mechanic Jay is the best. He gives you all the time you need and is very polite and knows more than anyone. He is older and lives to ride. As long as Jay is working here it is a no brainier of where to buy your bike. read more

Steiner's used to be a reputable place, but has clearly changed. They currently have a gentleman working as a ski tech who does not know anything about skis. Dropped off a brand new pair of skis and AT bindings (the Marker Baron) to be mounted. When we got them home, it turned out the the heel plate had been mounted in the wrong position so the rotating part of the binding could not interlock with the heel plate - ie the binding could not be skied, and likely could not be toured either without breaking. Unwittingly trying to ski a binding in this condition could have caused injury. Went back to Steiner's to point out the mistake - rather than apologizing and correcting the error as expected, the tech told us the bindings were in a fictitious "telemark mode." We have found no reference to the existence of a telemark mode, and the tech said that documentation of such a mode was on a dealer-only website he could not let us see. Other shops have confirmed that the bindings were mounted incorrectly and that no telemark mode exists. He was reluctant to give a refund for the faulty work. Even after a lengthy discussion he did not seem to understand a) the potential danger to someone using equipment wrongly mounted like this, b) the risk of cracking the binding by skiing it that way, c) the decrease in value to the ski due to the fact it would have to be re-drilled to fix his mistake, and d) the difference between telemark, alpine skiing, and touring. I do not normally care if someone knows the ins and outs of the ski industry, but I am quite alarmed that someone would presume to do work on equipment that they do not understand, and then send it out to be used. The appropriate course of action would have been to say he had no experience with this binding, and suggest we take it elsewhere. Or at the very least, to apologize profusely when we showed him the mistake. read more

I think they are the best bike shop in the area. Dave has 25+ years of experience in the bike and ski business and it shows. I have bought all of my bikes from Steiner's for many years. Not only have they always taken great care of my bikes but they also have helped my find just the right bike for my needs. I like dealing with a local company that knows their product and service it well. We just bought a 2018 Trek Domane SL5 which serves us well at this point in our riding. Jeff fit the bike to my partner and took his time to do all the measurements to be sure that it fit him well. We get a 30 day come back and have it adjusted for free after riding it for a while which is so nice. The service can't be beat and you get what you pay for in quality!! If you are looking for a good quality bike .. look no further you won't be disappointed. Unlike some other comments I see about hidden fees, that was not the case with me at all, the bike was as priced, all equipment was mounted with no surprises. They spent all the time that we needed and never made us feel rushed or pressured. Happy Biker!!! read more

Just to add an update, or perhaps it should be called a retort. It was claimed in the owner's response that I did not ask for a refund, which in fact incorrect. I asked for a refund in our conversation on the evening of 6/5/15 when we spoke on the phone just prior to 6:30PM, which if you remember the suggestion was scoffed at. If a refund is an option, then please by all means settle the issue with a refund and I will let my fellow Yelpers know of that outcome. You did offer to allow me to bring my bike in next year for a free tune, which wouldn't actually be free since you never did the tune I paid for in the first place. I am all for giving businesses a second chance if they truly seem to care about the quality of their work and if they actually do the work they charge for. read more

First,seems odd there haven't been any reviews, good or bad, for quite awhile. Oh well, here's one for 2018. So, I stopped in one day and spoke to an older gentleman about getting my mountain bike serviced/tuned up and I also wanted to explore options for tires as I found myself riding more and more on pavement as opposed to single track trails. He explained the various tune-up options and price points and also told me there was an assortment of tires suitable for what I was looking for but they would have to special order them. I thank him for his time and left. The following week I dropped off my bike for the $150+ tune-up but when I inquired about new tires, the fella (service tech) I spoke with told me tires like what I was looking for were not made in size 27.5. I'm sure I looked befuddled but I wasn't going to argue with the guy. I also mentioned I thought my rear tire had a leak as I was continually having to put air in it. I picked my bike up 6 days later and was not impressed with the level of 'cleaning' done on the bike. I was lead to believe the bike and certainly all the mechanical things on the bike would be like new....not the case. It was evident things had been wiped off, but certainly not cleaned to the degree I was told. I checked the rear tire and it felt soft but silly me, I didn't say anything. So, long story short, a couple of days ago I was on a ride. Before I left on the ride I had to add air in the rear tire and during the course of the ride the tire went completely flat. So much for having Steiner's check my tire during the tune up process. Stopped by a bike shop in Albany yesterday still in search of tires more befitting pavement riding and lo and behold, this bike shop had them in stock. Why the guy at Steiner's said tires like I wanted were not made makes me think he was just too darn lazy to help a customer. I will not go back to Steiner's and I would caution anyone not to do business with them unless you simply want to get ripped off. read more

Great place to shop! Bought a new trek their today and had excellent service at a great price. Guy who helped me (fairly young with tatoos. Didnt catch name) was an example of how a customer would truly like to be treated. Myself not being very knowledable in bikes, he was patient and informative.
