The lighting in the restaurant was a bit too bright, and the live music was great but a bit loud for easy conversation. The service was a bit slow, but fine overall. But the meal was great! Starters included a mix green salad (which I'm told was fine) or clam chowder in a bread bowl which was very good. My wife's New York steak included risotto and a rich pan sauce. My Risotto Genovese included a surprisingly generous portions of sea scallops, prawns and mussels in a zesty sauce. Desserts included crème brûlée cheesecake and Panna Cotta which were both yummy. We were genuinely surprised at how good this meal was!

When we arrived, everything seemed fine. Our waitress took our order, but we noticed she didn't have a notepad, which isn't unusual. However, she had my boyfriend repeat his order several times and eventually started writing it down on a napkin while continuing to confirm the order with him. We brushed it off because mistakes happen. A short while later, another couple came in and sat near us. By that point, we had already been waiting over 10 minutes for our food. The waitress took their order without any issues and left. What surprised us was that our food came out at the same time as theirs, even though we had ordered much earlier. From what we could tell, they ordered about the same amount of food that we did. When the food was brought out, the server initially tried to give our order to the other couple. They had to tell him it wasn't theirs before he brought them the correct food and then gave us ours. I can't say for certain whether our food had been handled by them, but it was still concerning. More noticeably, our fries were only lukewarm to cold, which made it seem like our food had been sitting for a while before it was finally brought to us. The biggest issue for us, however, wasn't the food. My boyfriend noticed early on that one of the waiters appeared to be watching us from a distance throughout most of our visit. I didn't notice it at first, but once he pointed it out, I began paying attention as well. Since there were only a few customers in the restaurant and we were the only customers of color, it made us feel uncomfortable. Every time our waitress returned to the dining area, she immediately looked directly at our table instead of naturally scanning the room or checking on other tables first. It gave us the impression that she was making sure we were still there, and it left us feeling singled out. Overall, this was a disappointing experience, especially because we've enjoyed coming here in the past. While the food itself tasted good, the service and the way we felt during our visit overshadowed the meal. Unfortunately, because of this experience, we won't be returning anytime soon.

Last, but not least, the staff is phenomenal. We were waited on by 3 different employees, each of whom gave impeccable service. Although all 3 were great, we have to give a special shout out to Jesse. He shared his creativity with us from his delicious cocktail creations to his AI-generated memory photos, which IMO would be any customer's novel reminder of their wonderful dining experience at Empress M. The sandwich was so large, I took half back to our room to eat for later. Crush Lounge also has a small bowling alley with several lanes. We didn't get to try it as it was reserved for an event, but this is such a cool feature of the property. This is a solid spot for a quick bite to eat or for drinks when staying at the Meritage.

Steiner's Tavern of Sonoma... the Stain of the Square? Chamber of Commerce and local businesses have a bully on the block. Unless addressed, the advertised message of Steiner's management is going to adversely affect tourism, costing millions. Consistent with Steiner's Tavern over the years is their ability to attract trouble when trouble could be avoided. According to management, Steiner's Tavern finds it necessary to adopt a not publicly posted bizarre policy of no ball caps in a sports bar, enforced by borderline criminal bouncers who appear and come across like patrons wanting to fight. Anyone can wear a ball cap in Steiner's Tavern until 9:59 PM Friday and Saturday, until the thugs of Steiner's Tavern come in. No threatening provocation is necessary to trigger these guys to escalate into a roid-rage episode that results in a headlock or other kind of physical assault that will land the unsuspecting, on defense by their approach, patron to be thrown out on the street in 32 F weather, then physically pushed away on a public sidewalk. And if that is not enough, if the patron calls for management, or questions their tactics, they call names like the sexist "P-word" or the homophobic "F-word" to provoke a fight. I thought California was culturally aware enough not use such words... but apparently, there are still pockets in Sonoma where such people exist and do business, and they're not from the sticks nor "down south." Reviews of similar behavior by Steiner's employees will support this, including management remarkably having incriminating video feed of assault lost. Steiner's Tavern management's attitude of "locals only" is similar to a city in Massachusetts when it came time to vote on adopting street name signage. Imagine, as an outsider, looking for a place of business, and there are no street signs, let alone traffic signs? The residents of this city voted against putting up signs for the same reason Steiner's Tavern refuses to post their "no ballcap" policy: "if you are a local you know the rules; if you aren't, get the hell out, but leave your money behind!" I look forward to the day when someone exercises their Constitutionally protected right to wear religious face covering entering Steiner's and gets kicked out because of "security" concerns. That will make a lot of money on YouTube for sure. However, the solution for Steiner's Tavern is simple: 1. publicly post the "no ball caps" policy, 2. adopt a distinguishable employee bouncer uniform so there are no misunderstandings, and 3. properly train their bouncers people skills. Before having to spend millions on reputation remediation, it's time for Sonoma to tell Steiner's Tavern Management to shape up or take their backwater attitude to some backwater alley where it belongs. If Steiner's Tavern continues with mounting bad reviews it will not take long before tourists get the message, "they aren't welcomed," and take their business elsewhere, like Napa, Saint Helena, Calistoga, etc. read more

I want to address the reviews that Kwame and Arielle made early today As a Black customer who frequents Steiner's regularly, I find reviews like this frustrating because they jump straight to racism without stopping to consider the actual facts. First, regarding the Yelp review and the photos being referenced--what's the timestamp on those pictures? What year were they taken? Were they from this month, last year, or several years ago? Policies and house rules can and do change over time, especially in bars, based on incidents management has dealt with or safety concerns that customers may know nothing about. Assuming a photo online tells the whole story without context is a stretch. You mentioned "gang affiliation," but do you spend every weekend in the establishment? Are you there for every interaction staff deals with at the door? Do you know what incidents may have happened in the past that led management to adopt or enforce certain rules? Realistically, no--you don't. So if the goal is to accuse a business of racism publicly, then facts and context matter. A private business is allowed to enforce house rules. Being told no at the door because of attire is not automatically discrimination just because you disagree with it. Sometimes it really is that simple: a rule was enforced, someone didn't like it, and suddenly the victim card gets played. And speaking from my own experience, I've spent plenty of time at Steiner's and have had nothing but respectful and positive interactions there. The staff has always been welcoming and professional. On top of that, the DJ there is African-American, which makes the blanket accusations being thrown around even more ridiculous. Real racism exists and deserves to be called out when it actually happens. But making public accusations based on assumptions, incomplete context, and personal feelings because a rule wasn't liked only weakens legitimate concerns and unfairly damages a local business. So before labeling people racist, maybe get the full story first. If you're going to make serious accusations, come with facts--not assumptions, not selective photos, and not a victim mentality because a bar enforced a rule you didn't agree with. Honestly, the mentality behind these accusations should be embarrassing. Throwing around racism because you didn't get your way is irresponsible and takes attention away from real issues that actually matter. You should be ashamed of trying to damage a business's reputation over assumptions and then framing yourselves as victims because you were asked to follow a rule. And if the response is that you won't be coming back, then truthfully that may be for the best for everyone involved. A business has every right to maintain its standards, and I'm sure Steiner's would rather continue serving respectful customers than deal with people looking for reasons to create controversy where there wasn't any to begin with. First of all, it is obvious that most of these good reviews were written by either a good friend of the manager or someone the manager gives free booze to. Which brings me to my next point, the amount of free alcohol I have witnessed half of these bartenders provide to certain "special" clientele/co-workers is just disgraceful. I feel bad for the owner and am assuming is not aware of this. To be honest, I'm only writing this review because apparently it's impossible to reach the owner. I tried speaking to the manager only to find out that the manager is actually the main problematic person. Don't believe me? Scroll down and read for yourself, the old blonde woman/wench (their words, not mine) that yelpers are referring to is the manager of this place. What a sad time for Steiners. I'm not a local, but I do work in Sonoma and find myself downtown a lot of the time. I have been here for years. For months I've witnessed major illegal activity at this bar during the manager's watch, including the serving of alcohol to minors. In addition, her and most of her staff (which I assume are close personal friends) are rude and judgmental. Someone needs to get this manager off her high horse. This bar needs someone who isn't so narcissistic but most of all someone who is PROFESSIONAL AND RESPONSIBLE. Taking shots behind the bar and being rude to guests does not apply. Sometimes It's hard to tell if she's on or off her shift, her actions make it hard to tell. Her lack of respect for others really infuriates me. It's difficult not to judge someone who treats other human beings this way. To the owner of this establishment, I know I'm not the first to complain about your staff, I'm sure you're more than capable of finding honest replacements, please do so before it's too late for your fine bar. For now, my colleagues and I will be taking our late night service to Burger & Vine or Swiss. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from this place. From the moment we walked in, it was clear we weren't welcome. The staff -- if you can even call them that -- were more interested in posturing and picking fights than serving drinks. There was zero professionalism. You get the sense they're just waiting for someone new to walk in so they can make an example of them. And God forbid your skin is anything other than white. The atmosphere is downright hostile. The bartenders don't care how long you are waiting at the bar.. it quickly becomes obvious the place only caters to locals -- and not the friendly kind. After a horrible experience the sheriff was called. Let's just say they get called out often and it's because of the employees. I asked to see a camera so I could show them what happened and the sheriff said "oh they don't have cameras". Yea I bet they don't! The bartenders and staff are known to charge and tackle people (including women) if you look at them the wrong way or suggest their way of serving people at the bar is ridiculous. They must not have the capacity to understand how it works. if someone is waiting patiently for over 5 mins and you see someone new just walks up, why would you serve the person that just weasled their way in the line up? Steiners opened a kitchen recently and now serves a good assortment of pub grub-style items like chicken strips, hot wings, tater tots and hot dogs -- all of which are what God intended you to eat while drinking or watching football. I LOVE the tater tots. A fried tot is approximately 800 times more delicious than a home-baked tot. The owner -- previously a professional fisherman and chef -- does bagel and lox specials on the weekends. He doesn't skimp on the smoked salmon and they easily feed two people for $10. The shrimp Louie salad are really popular for good reason -- homemade Louie dressing, heaps of shrimp on iceberg or romaine with all the traditional veggies. There's also thick, Sicilian-style pizza, chicken Louie sandwiches, and homemade tamales. The kitchen is open from 11:30 am until closing at about 2 in the morning, which is a blessing since just about everything else in Sonoma closes at 9pm except taco trucks. Absolutely brutal experience, waited to get in and when we got to the front they denied my friend because he was a person of color, citing that he had started an altercation at a bar across the square. My friend who is a devote Muslim and doesn't drink so was obviously confused because why/how would he would have started anything? Obviously confused and because we had just arrived, we went to said bar to figure out what had happened. Surprise, the bartenders and bouncer had no idea what they were talking about. True shame on them and Sonoma PD who understood our position but did not take any action. We understood that they possessed the right to refuse service to anyone, but given other reviews it is clear that they have a race problem. Would not recommend as staff members were extremely rude and obviously prejudiced towards people of color. I would think that we are past that in 2026, but Steiner's impresses in the least flattering of ways. Do not waste your money supporting them. read more

I am always at Steiners. I hate everyone who works there. They are always lame, Paul is rude and annoying. It wasn't even my fault what happened! I let a few people motorboat me a few times and apparently everyone is such an uptight prude that they like, couldn't handle it and told me to stop. I love sex why would I be limited by other people's hang ups? I wish all the nonlocals would go away this is MY BAR! I'm always here and I wish everyone would just respect that. I was there recently and someone called me an alcoholic! I'd rather just see everyone get fired and re-staff the whole bar personally. I'm so tired of these sleazy prudes who work there. Everything...this is the worst bar experience to have. In this place, you have a high chance of a conflict, it's what it's known for. In this bar there is always some bs going down. It attracts unhappy people. People go there to vent and settle scores. Every place on the Plaza is better, nicer, and friendlier. They're the ONLY bar with several bouncers on staff, in a town that is quite peaceful. Not going there again. It attracts some seriously racist people too. Not true of other places. They should call it the fight club, b/c it seems that's why people go there, to beef and fight. If you do go, keep to yourself. Say nothing. Really wish I read the reviews before I made the mistake of visiting this bar. The bar staff from bartender to bouncer were incredibly rude, misogynistic, racist, aggressive, and homophobic to not only my group of friends but others at the bar as well. I see in other reviews that the owner/manager has made some responses to try to discount people's similar experiences - don't believe his excuses. The staff at this bar are toxic and dangerous. If that isn't enough to convince you: when we asked servers at other restaurants their bar recommendations (we aren't familiar to the area), they straight up advised us not to go to Steiner's and multiple locals said that they personally avoided it. read more

Went to this place with a large group of women, and several of us were harassed by a man at the bar. He was a regular, and when we went to alert the bouncers to this man's behavior, they didn't kick him out and they didn't believe us. It came to the point where he physically threatened us in front of multiple bouncers, and then another bouncer claimed he didn't see the harassment, and so refused to do anything. We asked for a manager, who eventually kicked the guy out, but it took multiple women complaining and several of us adamantly advocating for ourselves. As the last woman in our group left, they let the guy back in. This bar hates women and supports sexual assault. read more

I consider myself a seasoned bar patron. I have been to allot of different bars over the years. So, I can honestly say Steiners wins as the best hands down. The drinks are healthy, the bartenders are attentive, friendly. The regulars are the best around. They are always there with a hug if you need one or not, a joke, a helping hand, anything you may want to know about Sonoma and always a good ear. I have made wonderful true friends there. If it is your first visit you will leave Steiners with new friends that will remember you and welcome you on your next visit. If you haven't visited yet stop by and say hi! Bouncers physically assaulted my friend for standing to near the entrance while smoking. I missed most of the interaction, but I assume they'd asked him to move several times and him being a drunk idiot either ignored, forgot, or didn't hear it. Either way, there is absolutely no excuse for a 215lb+ man to push a 150 pound kid full-force from behind, sending him on to the pavement. In fact it's illegal. Next time I'll be calling the police. If management sees this, it was Saturday 10/12 around 1:30am. The bouncer was around 5'8", bearded, and white. I understand it's a stressful job, but there's no excuse for violence. read more

This was the single worst bar I have ever been to!!! The bartenders are out of control and borderline criminal. My husband and I went in with another couple to have a drink before going back to our hotel. When we wanted to leave the bartender refused to give my husband back his credit card. He even denied having taken it. I asked to speak with the manager and was sworn at & threatened. I was hesitant to try this place out considering the reviews on bad service and lack of welcoming atmosphere, but it looked fairly busy for the Nationals vs Giants game this afternoon. I don't even know where to start. All the locals were completely hammered, at 3pm? Somewhat trashy. The drinks were affordable, but horrendous service. The bartender was a short brunette who looked Latino, and seemed drunk or on drugs and slower than ever.. Not to mention emotionless and hard to understand. I am not too picky but I will not dare return, unless I'm blacked out and want to be surrounded by obnoxious locals. read more

Steiners used to be a great place to get a drink on the square. The current bartender Mark is a complete jerk. He broke the law repeatedly and is a racist piece of trash and I don't say that lightly! Over the last 20 years, I have been a regular there and in the last year, I visited 3 times and this racist guy feels he is above the law. Being a rude person is one thing, breaking the law is another. I look forward to seeing Steiners in court. DO NOT go there if you are anything but old and white and don't care about service. It's a shame a few rotten dogs like him give Sonoma a racist reputation!!!! read more

ZERO STARS!! Absolute worst experience ever. I thought this was a beautiful city. However the blonde bar tender working Valentines night on 2/14/15 ruined what should have been a wonderful night with my husband was ruined by the worst bar tender. No customer service skills. This women has NO business working in an area where she has customer contact. If the owner of this establishment has ANY common sense he needs to get rid of this women and find the right person to represent their bar. This women will be their down fall. ZERO STARS. I so wish I could give zero stars! As my partner and I walked past and thought about stopping for a drink, we were greeted by a group of maybe 8 people outside, completely drunk and having cigs yelling homophobic slurs at my partner. If this is what the locals are like and where they hang out in Sonoma, well then, I don't need to spend my dollar here. You have left a lasting impression on me and why I pretty much don't need to come back to visit your little town. So close to my little SF bubble, but at the same time, so, so far away. read more

I just realized that another bartender from this fine establishment named Mark left me a very insulting and childish message about my review of Steiner's. Is this how you guys operate? How are you still in business with this bad of a bar staff? I can't formulate the words. How is it that there's no manager that has reached out to me, but instead a rude bartender named Mark, who is clearly representing your bar, does and calls me immature and a Karen?! Steiner's Bar in Sonoma was a major disappointment. The bartender was rude and obnoxious, creating a hostile vibe from the start. Security was just as aggressive and unprofessional, making the experience even worse. There were also clear signs of racial bias in how people were treated, which made the atmosphere feel unsafe and exclusionary. Sonoma deserves better than this. I won't be back, and I'd encourage others to steer clear until serious changes are made. read more

As a noted barstool sailor, this bar is certified TRASH. Why on gods green earth do I need to remove my hat to enter? Your old bartender SUCKS. This place is lucky it's the only spacious bar in Sonoma or it would be out of business. The bartender is legitimately an asshole, who seems like he'd rather be doing anything other than bartending. If you have money, invest in a bar in Sonoma to hopefully put this wretched place out of its misery. read more

While everyone around us was being served, we were consistently ignored despite being first in line. It was very noticeable and frustrating. Patrick, in particular, was incredibly unprofessional and strange. He seemed to go out of his way to assist other customers while avoiding us altogether. There's many talented artists in Sonoma / Northern California that I'm sure they could feature instead of AI slop. The food was okay, but was honestly very overpriced for the quality and the portions. We had a few items that were good, but the price tag was not justified.
