Bipolar is the best way to describe this bar. If you stroll in during the early evening hours, you can grab one of the two pool tables in back while drinking a pint of something on tap and catching a hockey game (or whatever sport that you prefer but is lame because it's not hockey). Brian, one of the staple Steiner's bartenders, is one of my favorite people on earth. Seriously. However, if you come in around midnight on a Friday or Saturday night, it kind of reminds me of my experiences in frat houses during my freshman year at UCLA. Straightforward. Extreme hit or miss crowd. Not bad with a little polish, but I'd still head to the opposite side of the square to one of the other bars if you need a cooler atmostphere. Music nights are best - otherwise the crowd can be a bit gruff. read more

This place is rollicking on weekend nights with an odd but intriguing mix of locals of all ages and drunk out-of-towners who have just left a wedding. While I would not recommend eating any of the deep-fried slop they pass off as food, it serves its purpose as the only place in Sonoma to watch all the Sunday football games and shake your money maker on the dance floor. read more

Will keep it short- in town with a wedding party... group of at least 30 or more people drinking and tipping... and we were treated so rudely by the bartender that I would never recommend the place. Yes, we were loud. Yes, we were probably even being a little obnoxious. But if we weren't there, you would have 5 people in your bar having one drink... My co workers and I were having a great, low key night until we ended our time at Steiners. Just as we were ending our outing my co worker and I were shoved out of the way by one the bouncers (not too sure what sparked this). Immediately after, our other co worker was laying hurt in the street and was severely injured by one of the meat head bouncers, who then laughed and smiled at our friend laying there not able to move. The injury caused by their employees resulted in an ICU stay and hemorrhaging. As a local, I will never return here and will go out of my way to encourage everyone to do the same. read more

My wife stopped in here on our honeymoon because we wanted to watch some NFL football at a local place. We looked at online reviews and decided that Steiner's Tavern would be the place to go because they have multiple TV's and a sports theme. Turns out they indeed have many TV's and there were about 6 games showing at once when we walked in there. It was a pretty good place to catch some football on a Sunday afternoon. Other reviewers were right about the locals. There were about 15 of them lined up at the bar. We saw lots of slaps on the back, making fun of each other, taking shots, and gawking at any female that happened to walk by (including my wife). One of them actually offered to buy her a drink! Overall, it's a pretty nice place. Somewhere between a dive bar and a sports bar. It was very clean, although the men's room was out of soap which kind of scared me. We ordered the sampler platter and their famous chowder. It was pretty good bar food, but far from healthy. But hey, we were on vacation. Steiner's was a good place for hanging out to watch the game and have a few beers. I found it interesting that there were no tables there (there might have been one). You either bellied up to the bar or sat at an area with a bar extending between two pillars (that's where we were). There is no table service, so you need to go up to the bar to get a drink, and subject yourself to the drunken ramblings of the locals. Watch out if you're female, they get real friendly later in the day. If you want food, you go back to the kitchen window and tell them what you want. Good service, nice people. While Steiner's has some good live music, the pictures don't really depict the Steiner's I saw. When we went, it was more of an atmosphere of small groups of 3-4 per table chatting over a couple of beers. Which is A-OK in my book. Maybe, I'll try some of their food next time. read more

Some really rough reviews for about the best locals bar in Wine Country. The bar food is actually really well done and not too greasy. Good tap selection, and bar tenders that know how to mix a proper cocktail. Steiner is like an Oasis stepping out of the tourist dominated square to watch football on the multiple screens on Sunday's. Unlike most of my favored hole in the walls, though, its actually pretty clean and well kept. Pool and Darts too! Its really an any-mans corner bar, and Im glad they can still scare away some of the unsavory outsiders. read more

This is the local hangout place, there is no doubt about that. Afternoons and early evenings are a good time to stop by before dinner for a drink. After dinner, there are other places in the area that are nicer and more friendly to the visiting crowds. Local sports are always on their TV's though, so if you want to sit and talk with the locals about their teams, it is a great place to be. read more

By far the most diverse bar on the plaza. Pool tables, dart boards, dice ( for amusement only) and juke box. DJ's every friday and saturday nights and wing specials during the 49er games. They have some awesome pub grub and my personal favorite is the garlic tater tots. You either love it or you hate it, there is no in between. The weekends are super busy and I suggest getting early if you want to sit down past 10 pm. The bartenders are as nice to you as you are to them. This is an actual bar so no fancy drinks but a very generous pour at a low price. Regarding V.M and her sister-in-law loosing her purse in the bar last weekend, I was standing next to you while you and your mother-in-law screamed at the bartender to " TURN OFF THE DJ AND MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT HER PURSE IS STOLEN " while she was working. She told you to please write down your information and file a police report, then she told you she would be happy to review her video footage when she got off at 2am. Not sure how this was "absolutely NOTHING" as you claim. The fact that you wanted a staff member to essentially shut-down a club on a Saturday night because someone in your wedding party was drunk and lost their purse is arrogant. the crowd is a mix of weekend tourists, college kids, and biker folk. they don't serve cider nor sam adams for you east coast folk but...they are really generous with their shots. i can testify first hand as i was discovered with a full on face plant in my hotel room after 2 redbull/vodka, 2 lemon drop shots, and a double shot of patron (probably what did me in). there are a couple of pool (bar sized) tables in the back if you get tired of watching the guys cruise the ladies. read more

One Word. LOCALS. I've been here several times and it seems like all the LOCALS hang out here. This is not a bad thing, but I guess I'm tired of seeing the same old people around. Terrible experience. I am not a complainer but this experience was unpleasant. We are from out of state, went to watch the game. It was located on the square so we thought it'd be a nice place to grab some food and a few drinks. Took a full quarter standing at the bar before we got drinks (it was not that busy!), ordered food - the lady who brought it out was annoyed someone asked for water. All of which isn't a big deal. An underage kid (also from out of state) came in with his family and the owner (who was sitting at the end of the bar drinking) came barging at him screaming in his face and yelling at his father he "should know better" - the owner made a complete ass of himself, the teenager and his family had no idea they did anything wrong (apparently under 21 can't be in bars in CA). Just a gross experience, we went to a Whiskey bar across the way and that place rocks. Go there instead! read more

This is one of the few bars open late in sonoma. Beware it is CASH ONLY and I'm pretty sure there's no food. The drinks are cheap though. They have a small dance floor and pool tables in the back, similar to a Kate's pub. Recommended if you want to get your groove on but not the best place to converse over a beer on Saturday night. read more

Me and my fiancé who was born and raised in Sonoma was visiting her mother who was at the hospital recovering from Surgery. After a long day At the hospital she asked if I wanted to go get a couple drinks downtown. She took me to Steiner's where she stated everyone used to go as a young adult. We got there about 9:30 pm. We sat at the bar that was not really all that busy. The bartender a muscular guy greeted us and asked what we wanted. She ordered a glass a wine and I a beer. A bout 45 minutes later a bouncer approached me asking me to remove my Oakley Ball cap. I looked at him with a confused look but with out hesitation took it off. We both ordered another drink and as doing so we saw the same bouncer that told me to remove my hat poring himself a drink from an alcohol bottle in his sweatshirt. By this time the bar had gotten quite busy. With young people everywhere and with the bouncers drinking we decided it was not a place we wanted to be. I asked the bartender to close us out and my fiancé put her jacket on and I put my hat back on. I was immediately approached again by a bouncer that aggressively told me to remove my hat. I stated we where leaving and I do not understand the thing with the hat. He said to take it off and get the F out. I asked to speak to his manager. He went and got the manager whom I said to, "why are your bouncers giving me such a hard time? we got up to leave I put on my hat and now they are in my face." He stated to me that the bar has new policies that go in effect after 10 pm and hats are not allowed. I said that's fine but we are leaving. The bouncer said take off your hat again getting in my face. I stated I am leaving let me get my credit card. My fiancé reported to the manager the bouncers drinking and they got aggressive approaching her as well. I turned to the bartender and was grabbed by three bouncers, they pulled my pants and underwear up my rear end picking me up and took me to the front throwing me out of the bar. The one bouncer continued to get into my fiancé's face. They had my Fiance sign for the tab she was being approached by locals apologizing for the bars behavior and left. We reported the incident to the police, which they investigated the incident finding out that this establishments cameras some how where not working that night. Surprise surprise. If anyone was there on Friday Nov. 29th and saw the incident go and report it to the Sonoma Police. This place needs to be held accountable. read more

I find the below reviews quite hysterical yet extremely entertaining. Steiner's is exceptionally welcoming (if you're not an asshole) Clean (if you're not wasted and puking all over the bathroom) has the best bartenders ever (once again if you're not an asshole) the food is good, the specials are great! (unless you're Gordon Ramsey). It is absolutely a locals bar so there is very little tolerance for pretentious A holes. Be nice to the locals and they will absolutely be nice to you. Late nights when there is a DJ is a bit crazy....don't go if you don't enjoy loud and crowded and yes....they are strict about ID's and security....as they should be for the safety of all the patrons. As a person who was once a tourist going to Steiner's and is now a local spending time there I can honestly say that every single one of these bad reviews had to have come from entitled A holes because this bar is the "Cheer's" of Sonoma. If you are a human being, you should like Steiner's. This bar gets a great mix of locals and tourists and is friendly and fun. It is one of the only spots in Sonoma that does not close early. Super fun dance party location. When everything in town seemed to close its doors at 9 they had a bumping scene. Great DJ the night we came.

We will never go back. After spending a good part of the day there watching the U.S. Open, with no one else in the place, they had a shift change and switched all the TV's right in front of us. The bartender was rude and a real piece of work, power tripping that he was in charge of an empty dive bar with no consideration for the customers.
