One thing no-one has yet mentioned about this bar.... It opens up at six feckin a. feckin m. That's the time of day a bar should open up at. That's the time of day a man should start drinkin at. Or finish depending on how good the night before was. I don't think I have been in a bar at 6 am since college. It is just one of those things. If a bar is open at six am and no-one is there, is it really open? Well, I had to find out so I went in and it was. Sadly we missed the opportunity to come back in the evening and drink with the local 50-and-over Harley Davidson biker's club. We were the out-of-town tourists just in for a few days - it was great to see that a place exists in Sonoma where lychee freakin martinis aren't on the menu and beer is served in a foamy frosted mug and you can buy a cup of coffeee for a dollar. It is also worth pointing out that the conversations you overhear at other tables aren't about "cloud computing" "the service portfolio matrix" " the value proposition " or other crap like that that a normal person comes to Sonoma to get away from. I spent a few Sunday's here watching football. The bartender is friendly and is a local. They had some bar food separate from the bar but it was great. At night it got a little packed but I enjoyed day drinking here. It was a great way to lay off the wine a bit haha read more

Steiners was our default when we were in Sonoma. Also known as Club S on Saturdays, it's a bumpin bar with decently priced drinks, good live music on a regular basis and lots of friendly locals, even though it's on the square. There are pool tables, TVs, darts, a dance floor and a kitchen that is pumpin out some good smells. Though there are the staples, like fried pickles, they also have some fun items like sweet potato tater tots and a great bowl of clam chowder. Definitely make this a stop on your first night and you'll end up with lots of local friends and maybe a hangover. read more

Steiner's Tavern is an institution of Sonoma. Dearly loved & supported by Sonoma & neighboring folks. They serve typical bar grub, in good sized portions, reasonably priced. I've been to Steiner's twice. My 1st was an impromptu afternoon visit, whilst shopping in Sonoma Square. Mostly older gents socializing together, hanging out. Laid back scene. My 2nd visit Saturday night vastly different. Loud & full of young adults, meeting/greeting to hook up, I guess. Drinks flowing. Jell-O shots available. This is a great bar to hang out at. Its extremely clean and you can tell that the people that work their really have a lot of respect for the bar and the customers that flow through the doors. They have a little kitchen that serves up some snack food, tv's, pool tables, and dice games. The bar tenders are very nice and dont mind having a conversation with you or throwing in their two sense. They also have music going all the time which is great too. The location is great, right on the plaza so if you have been to Sonoma and havent gone in yet give it a shot you will be pleasantly surprised. read more

I first learned about Steiners back in the old days when it was in a much older and smaller building, in the back they had picnic tables to sit outside and take in a breath of fresh wine country air. When Steiners closed down and word was out that they were opening again, bigger and better, I was hesitant, that was Dec 00! I spent 6 solid years -( well not solid but you get the pic) at the new Steiners and I have and hold some extremely precious memories there! I made an incredible circle of friends, that too this day I still stay close to. I agree with Cat, Steiners is actually where I met many great people and made many friends! There might even be a fun collage on the walls in Steiners to check out! Then of course there is the diverse crowd that you can find on the weekends! I tell you, if people watching is your thing, you see all kinds - just like that song by Toby Keith, I love this bar!!! It is true I do, it is and will always be close to my heart. If you like to play pool, they have 2 pool tables in the back, but play fair, no quarters on the table here, put your name on the chalkboard and have a drink (did I mention how good they are?) while you are waiting your turn! I Of course Steiner's is not only known for the weekend night drunk fest, but Steiner's is also the venue for Film Festivals and other really great events in Sonoma! The weekdays are fun to walk in a any given after noon to say hello to some very friendly old folks (geezers) and here some really cool stories! And as far as the drinks! I agree you will not find another fun local bar that has more friendly bartenders and that REALLY know how to make a drink! You can even challenge them, I betcha they will know how to make it!! Any Nascar fans coming to town...Steiners is the only happening spot for after the race fun! Steiner's is like a old school sports bar - I won't really call it a dive because it's very clean inside. In fact, I loved how put together the place was - lots of seating, corner kitchen area for sweet potato tots etc, 2 pool tables and bathrooms in the back. The ladies room was clean and has 2 stalls. + 1 star. Lots of TVs, dice, long bar - good drinks too! I know they have DJs and music some nights So I would definitely check that out. I've come to Steiner's quite frequently because it's cool for a dive bar and everyone loves the owner but tonight was the worst. The Bartender Mark was verbally abusive to pretty much everyone. Steiner's is without question the best bar in Sonoma for late night partying. It draws a wide array of people: locals, tourists, post-wedding bridal parties, bachelorette parties, etc. After 10:30 on a weekend it's mostly younger folk sprinkled with some 40 year olds and a few cougars. Regardless, the bar is good for just about anything you'd want to be doing in an environment such as this (mingling, people watching, dancing, pool). They play music with wide appeal and have reasonably priced drinks (compared to nearby SF). The people who have posted negative reviews of this bar are simply not the type of people anyone wants to see in a bar in the first place. Whiners. read more

We stopped in on a Sunday night for dinner. That's right dinner. Rumor has been going around town about their crab and shrimp Louie's. Salad took FOREVER to come to the table, but to be fair we were warned when we ordered that it would be a wait. Salad was very good and very generous with shrimp. read more

I've wanted to check out Steiners for quite some time as I heard about it awhile back from some locals while wine tasting in Sonoma. We had a great time and even better cocktails by a handsome bartender. I was too nervous to ask his name, but he looks like Clark Kent and he's really built. I will be back. Each time we went to Napa, it would be dead after dinner. This time we stayed in Sonoma, and there was life after dinner! Night life! Steiner's had a live band and it was quite packed with people on a drizzly Friday night. No dress code, all ages, loud, lively environment. Club S is bumpin' seven nights a week! When you're in wine country you expect a lot of schmoozin' and wine drinking with your pinkie in the air. But when your little pinkie gets tired, throw on some flip flops and comfy clothes and head to the square and grab a beer at Club S. This is the spot where we made most of our friends, and this is the spot where I was able to nab some craft beer when my tastebuds couldn't handle anymore wine. The drinks are affordable, you can play pool or darts and there was a different band every night that rocked the house. It was packed with locals so we chatted up as many people as we could and got some great recommendations for places to hit up each day. We were in Sonoma for 4 days and each of them ended at Steiner's and a blast was had by all. This town is amazing and it's the people that make it so. Dropped in mid-afternoon with a couple of friends visiting from out of town for a drink and left a credit card with the bartender to keep a tab open, if needed. After one drink, less than thirty minutes after sitting down, we were ready to leave and I let the bartender know I was ready to settle up. He asked where I lived, then said he "accidentally" gave my credit card to a regular patron who just left, and the bar manager would call and let me know when the "regular" patron came back in with the card if I left my name and phone number. Then I could come back and get it... Seriously? Wouldn't you know what the regular patron looked like and possibly even the difference between my name and the regular's name? I happen to be new to town and not a regular, but if you're a tourist from out of town, beware! Do not use a credit card under ANY circumstances here. This place is old school. Like Harry's in Paris but a little down market. No table service. Bar on right side, kitchen on the left. You order drinks from the bartender, pay and then order food from the cook and pay. Food is very basic - a variety of hot dogs and sausages and a few sandwiches. The cook's fries are among the best you'll find anywhere. read more

My husband, another couple, and I had a nice weekend in Sonoma. Decided that the hotel bar closing at 11 and having a section of alcohol we weren't really into wasn't going to do. We needed a dive and a dive we found. Not sure if it was just too busy for us to have any run ins with these awful regulars. But most of the people are nice.
