Awful and disgusting!! I ordered a single bagel and a mocha while the place wasn't busy, only for it to take them twenty minutes. I was so excited to eat since I love salmon bagels, but the second I opened it, there was a long strand of hair on it and a couple of strands inside. It came with a single pickle on the side wrapped in a plastic bag, and while I LOVE pickles, it looked disgusting and was very floppy and wrinkly. I've been going to Steingold's for years and continue coming back here despite all the new bagel stores popping up. I haven't eaten at Steingold's, but my sister in law catered Rosh Hashanah dinner from there and it was delicious. On the way to dinner my kids asked what we were eating for dinner and I told them to expect the usual Rosh Hashanah food (brisket, kugel, etc). They all groaned and have to admit I groaned silented inside. However, the food turned out to be so delicious that we've all been eating leftovers for days. We started with appetizers: - deveiled eggs: I'm a huge deviled egg fan, but will admit these were just OK. - smoked mackeral brandade: i didn't have any of this, but seemed to be a hit - mixed boureka: so good and eating them days later -baba-chini: also so good Entrees: - brisket: i skipped this, but my kids and husband asked to bring home leftoves - baked salmon: loved - noodle kugel: amazing - squash: yum - broccoli cesar: one of my favrites of the meal For dessert the apple honey bundt cake was a hit, although I chose to have a delicious macaroon instead which i'm not sure was from Steingold's. You'd swear these are the most seeded and topped bagels you've seen. Their poppey bagels are so seeded they look like a cocoa powder dusted donut, same with the sesame and everythings. I don't know what technique they do it get or keep so much topping on them, but it's a pleasure to have too much rather than not enough. They service beer here which makes it slightly unbreakfasty and their bagel sandwiches used baked eggs rather than griddled/flat topped or from a pan. Keeps them fluffy, but I prefer mine a little runnier. Service is very good, friendly, not rushed or fake hospitality. They cure their lox in house which to me feels more tender than other places, probably just a lower, longer heating or a gentler cure. Excellent schmear, a not heavy handed when scooping (respect the schream cuz). Prices are pretty good considering the care and love they put into the bagels (hand rolled, multiple proofs). They have crunch, chew, density, but air pockets. Chef/owners def put thought into the menu with flavors like zatar, dilly ranch deviled eggs. Dr. Browns sodas. Baclava cappuccinos. White fish on bagel chips, Bagel dog is such a simple combination of not just the everything bagel seasoning, but the dough as well. And the mustard pairs better than had they added schmear (sorry Seattle dogs, i'm not a fan, i only like my cream cheese in philadelphia sushi rolls, lol) . The pizza bagel needs more toppings like pepperoni, sausage becuase then it would eat like a normal size bagel bite. The challah bread on the rachel really is more well rounded than the reuben. It's something I've been recreating back home. Giard cream cheese, cmon ya'll are really hitting the nail on the head for a Chicago bagel shop. I guess that's why there are 3 locations now. The Haystack with apple butter works better than expected, but also works with a chive cream cheese sub, no ketchup needed (if you do go with the harissa ketchup from the yada yada). BEC with a side of salted tomato and harissa ketchup is amazing. If everything was 10% more like toppings wise this would be amazing, but they always seem to skimp on something whether it's the schmear, pickels, salad. I feel like i was haggling for my meal sometimes. Prices area little high for most items, but of great value for others. It's busy in the mornings, but lines move long and only once did I have to wait for a fresh batch of anything despite some large orders ahead of me. It's a 20 minute train ride, but worth it. This bagel was almost $20 and was supposed to have turkey on it. It has no meat on it. Also it's very small and portions of everything is tiny. Had another bagel on this order and paid for extra cream cheese and it has almost none it. Very very disappointing. Would absolutely never come back when there are much better options in Chicago that will actually give you what you ordered. Damn, if I ever plan on opening a restaurant, I for sure will not be opening up a bagel shop. After reading the most recent reviews it seems like it's hard to please these bagel shopping customers. If customers are treating places like "it's just a bagel shop" or "just pizza" they're you're never going to be satisfied. If people are commenting that it used to be their favorite bagel shop, then where the heck is the review that showed that? I really don't understand the one review people, trying to harm these local business. This place is the real deal. After trying bagels in New York, I knew that anything I tried anywhere in the world, would have to be compared to the bagels I've had in the Big Apple. I will admit there's not much in the city of Chicago that is remotely close to the bagels served in New York. Are offerings aren't that great. That is until i decided to check out Steingolds. I ordered their "Steingolds Classic Lox" with an Everything bagel. It came with lox and scallion cream cheese, capers, tomatoes and untoasted. These bagels were massive. They tasted fresh as did the lox. A very simple but flavorful sandwich executed to perfection. And also very filling. It also came with a pickle and a side. I chose their bagel chips which were also phenomenal. I'm glad I finally found my local bagel place. There is literally no other place in the city that offers bagels like Steingolds does. Really salty. Really expensive. We came here for breakfast and for two people the total came to approx. $45 which seems like a lot for a cafe / fast casual dining experience. I had the egg everything bagel sandwich with bacon, egg, cheese and a cold brew on the side. This combo was just under $20. The sandwich was extremely salty and for the price point it seemed like there should have been more ample fillings in the sandwich. The restaurant did seem clean and popular for breakfast. Personally, I didn't enjoy my sandwich and paid a premium for what tasted like pure salt. It was good. They're a bagel shop with what you expect, bagels and bagel sandwiches. They have both breakfast and lunch-type sandwiches in case you're not a breakfast person. There's also a nice variety of cream cheese that they sell, and the jalapeño and chive I bought was very good. They have wine and spirits, and some gourmet grocery items like olive oil and salt, juices and sodas. The line was long, but it moved more quickly than I expected. However, it did take a bit under 30 minutes to get my order filled. They have about ten tables inside and the other part of the restaurant appeared to have counter seating, but no one was in there so I'm not sure if that was just because people were waiting for to go orders or what. Also wasn't super thrilled with the cashier who coughed constantly... I guess good thing she was coughing into her elbow? I wouldn't go out of my way to visit here again, but it wasn't bad. There are other bagel places that nearer or easier to get to. Parking is street only on Southport, and this place is right next to the Music Box so you it can often be challenging. The Ruth open face lox with egg salad elevated the classic with creamy protein and was a bit easier to eat since it comes open face. The storefront is spacious with QR code menus & ordering based on tables. The service was fast for a steady crowd of people on a Monday morning. Cousin Suzy was great! I haven't had a vegetarian Reuben style sandwich in a long time and love that they offer it. I got it on the ciabatta roll and thought it was perfect. For my side I got the macaroni salad and that was good as well. My sister got the lox bagel and found it too salty, It comes with tomato, lox, cucumber (although it seems like pickles more than cucumber) onions, capers and she chose chive cream cheese. The topping to cream cheese ratio was really good and there was a decent amount of lox, The loxs was also really good I got a bite. However maybe next time she'll have to order without the everything bagel and the capers. Her side was potato salad which I thought was a little too mustardy for my taste but all in all was fine for a free side. We also got two pickles which were great It was just really funny because her pickle was much smaller than mine lol. We ordered online but decided to stay there to eat because the ambience was so cute. It said it would take 22 minutes for our food to get out based on the receipt but it came earlier than that. Super cute location, easy online ordering, and remarkable employees!! Love this spot on Southport. I love the everything bagel with chive cream cheese. It is definitely the best bagel I've had in Chicago, and I'm grateful Dark Matter coffee also carries them! The egg bagel is also good, but the sandwich wasn't my fave (but could be yours!). Steingold's was recommended to us by @jackvelasquez as he continues to ride the hot hand with where he's dispatched us. Fresh? Authentic? Somehow those descriptions seem to fall flat when merely standing alone. When I reflect on the Steingold's experience I'd have to sum it up with, "Premium ingredients coupled with craftsman preparation." Although their location is outside of the downtown area, it is just an easy ride away when using the "L." While I was busy internally debating if my favorite was the bagel, schmear, or lox (I eventually gave up because they were all equally excellent), I heard another Review Team Member utter, "This is the best chicken salad I've EVER had because it paired perfectly with the soft challah bread." On a related note, the surrounding neighborhood is outstanding for either window shopping or a leisurely stroll amongst one beautiful residence after another. OK, I ordered online for a pick up. My husband got the Leo on rye (mistake, it was sliced too thin). I got a cheese bagel with veggie cream cheese. Got a salt bagel (a recommendation from the staff) and onion w chive cream cheese to take home to make breakfast sandwiches the other day. They were generous with the portions of the cream cheese and the bagels are pretty big. The salt bagel had a nice flavor but the onion one didn't have a strong onion taste to it. The bagels had a good bite but were a little softer for my liking. They were also pricier than what you'd expect at most bagel shops. I would come back (perhaps for a breakfast sandwich and catch a matinee at music box) but it wouldn't be my first choice for just bagel. I would check it out to see for yourself. read more

So satisfying. A great place to order to go when you need to wait in line for a sold out show at The Music Box next door. The sausage, egg, and cheese on an onion bagel really hit the spot for me, and my wife said that her bacon, egg, and cheese on everything was top notch as well. She raved about the crispiness of the bacon. They toast the bagels slightly, but you can also choose to have it toasted more (my preference) or less. For sides, they have plenty, including tons of schmears, salads, babkas, cookies, etc, but the classic crunchy bagel chips were my choice. It is usually busy, but they churn the food out super fast. Due to the lack of Jewish delis in the area, I really wanted to like Steingold's. After a very blah experience the first time around, I decided to give it another chance. First, my bagel was cold. Not room temperature; cold. The taste was ok and the texture wasn't my favorite but I just don't enjoy a cold bagel. I paired this with the matzo ball soup which I found to be nearly inedible due to the insane amount of dill and the sea of oil the matzo ball was swimming in. The matzo ball, itself, was quite good, but the soup was terrible. Besides the forest of dill, the soup was unbelievably oily. This was the Exxon Valdez of soups. We also tried the Egg On a Roll sandwich, which has pastrami, fried eggs, and havarti on a challah bun. The sandwich was ok. The pastrami, by itself, was pretty good but the doughy bun threw the ratios off and I wasn't a big fan. We mistakenly selected the Dill Potato Salad as our side item. Again, dill should be more of an accent to a dish rather than a sledgehammer. It's overpriced and just not good. I'm done with Steingold's. read more

First time at the new Steingold's location next to the Music Box on Southport, but it won't be the last. I really appreciate the inside of the deli, it feels like just that, an old New York/North Jersey deli. I felt right at home with the market on one side and seating on the other. Don't miss out on that market, there's some great stuff there. As for the bagels, they're quite good, certainly one of the better bagels in this city. They're clearly not boiled, but even so, they have a nice chew on the inside and a decent crust on the outside - maybe a little longer toasting would slightly improve that. Just about everything is made in house, so the flavors inside are excellent. The cream cheese was about as good as I've had, and the mushrooms in the egg sandwich were rich in flavor. Some here have complained about wait times, but we got our two bagels, on a busy Saturday morning, in under 10 minutes. Price points are pretty good considering (about $17 for both). Gotham Bagels remains the best bagel in the city, but for overall ambience and price point, Steingold's might be the best overall bagel shop around. read more

Yesterday I splurged and treated myself to "Jewish" deli food because truthfully I was craving a tuna fish sandwich but found out online that nope it's not an option here. So I chose the next best thing...A chickpea Mediterranean style sandwich The Elaine sandwich was extremely satisfying it's made with fresh chickpeas, pickled cucumbers tomato mayo and lettuce sandwiched between freshly baked challah bread When you order any of the sandwiches you receive one complimentary side and a baby pickle so I chose their dill potato salad and a fruit salad. Honestly the meal tasted exquisite and very healthy so it didn't feel naughty. The only unhealthy item I got was a Dr. Brown's cherry soda but heyyyy how can you not accompany a deli sandwich without a Dr. Brown's soda pop?! Isn't that technically a crime?! If you're looking for a typical restaurant style set up where your server seats you, takes your order and asks you if you need anything else then you will be disappointed here. This is a very low key, laid back Cafeteria style deli where you go to the cashier, pay for everything up front then she hands you a number and she brings you everything when it's ready. Critique= I wish this deli had soup and sandwich combos where you could have a tiny portion of soup and half a sandwich The soups here were priced around $7 so it becomes a little cost prohibitive to order a full sandwich and a huge bowl of soup. Maybe they could tweak the menu to allow for this to happen? Also I just now noticed they have a loyalty points program here for repeat customers. Unfortunately the cashier yesterday afternoon never mentioned this to me even though I told her I was a new customer. Perhaps management here should have a placard at the cashier with a special scanning code mentioning their loyalty points program because I didn't accumulate points from yesterday's lunch. Regardless the food here is delicious and clean tasting and I noticed they have some vegan options here too! This place has some of the best bagels hands down! I tried it for the first time about 2 or 3 months ago. I happened to go on a Sunday afternoon, but I have to say that it is really packed. The interior is simple and nice, and the amount of people there made it such a social environment! They had outdoor and indoor seating as well as a to go line. They also sold their own products and shed light to smaller Jewish businesses! Originally, I had gotten just a sesame seed bagel with regular cream cheese, and it was very flavorful. The bagel had a good crunch, and they put on a good spread of cream cheese; however, since then, I've had the same sesame bagel BUT with giardiniera cream cheese. if you are unsure what to get, please get that. I have not been to Steingold's since they moved from Irving Park Road to Southport. I have enjoyed their food in the past, but they're usually closed when I am in the area (they close at 3pm). Yes, I waited until the last minute to plan a meal for Rosh Hashanah, and by the time I thought about it, restaurants were no longer accepting reservations for dining in or for carry-out. Yesterday, I decided to go to Steingold's to see if they would have any holiday appropriate food to sell. When I walked in, their deli case was completely empty. A nice gentleman asked if I needed help. I said, "I am wondering if you have any food for a Rosh Hashanah dinner?" He responded by saying, well it's the last minute, so we don't have much. What did they have? Brisket, schmaltzy potatoes, gravy, and matzo ball soup...exactly what I wanted. They readied my bag of food in no time and included detailed instructions for reheating everything. Everyone in the store was pleasant and helpful. The food was absolutely delicious. The soup was loaded with chicken, veggies, dill and a well-formed soft matzo ball. The brisket was moist and tender and the slightly sweet gravy made it even better.
