Eat the biscuits. Seriously. A friend and I went for brunch before Christmas. The food was absolutely amazing. The service was horrible. I will probably not go back, it was that bad. It started with the hostess not being sure where to seat me even though it was not full. As I waited for my friend I found myself also waiting for the waitress. She eventually brought coffee cups and water. It took about ten more minutes for her to bring coffee. Admittedly, once my friend arrived we were slow in deciding on what to order as a starter. Again, the BISCUITS. They took 25 minutes to come out. It's 3 biscuits. It was brunch but they weren't busy. We did order pretty quickly after that because it was obvious service wasn't very good. It took our food about 40 minutes to come out. I had the chicken fried steak and she had the croque madame. We were both very pleased with the food. It was 100% not the issue. Our waitress hardly came to check on us, filling the coffee up only once. It was a colder day and the restaurant was a bit chilly so the coffee actually wasn't very warm after a while. Our check took long as well. I arrived shortly before 10am and we didn't leave until nearly 1. We chatted and took our time, but a large portion of that was because we could only chat while we waited...and waited. They do validate at the hostess desk, but it only is 50% off the valet, which wasn't conveyed until I went out to get my car. So, heads up about that. tl;dr Food good, service not. read more

And in our party of four each person ordered something different and they were all more miss than hit. The #16 biscuits, for instance, that seem to get lots of rave reviews were unremarkable. Oh Stella, you've been so good to us! We recently stayed at the Westin Downtown which is where this gem is located and as a guest, I couldn't have asked for a more friendly and accommodating restaurant. Not only is it gorgeous inside, service and food here is superb. During our first few hours post check-in, we quickly realized that the bar at our rooftop pool wouldn't be opened until 3pm. Quickly working on our plan B, Stella rushed to our rescue with a couple bottles of champagne (1st round of many in the next coming days might I say). Not only were they amazing about that, they were also able to send our lunches up to the pool so we wouldn't miss a beat. Awesome, awesome service but the 5 stars obviously includes the fact that their food is on point! I ordered their fried avocado salad 2 days in a row. It was that good. Only thing I would suggest is to ask for dressing on the side when you order this baby. Else it might be a bit heavy handed. Other things that I've tried that are stellar are the crispy brussels and crab cake. I've also tried the kale and brussels salad and the shrimp and crab and roll. Pretty great picks but I'd go with the previous I'd mentioned over these if you're indecisive. 2 thumbs all the way up and 5 stars across the board. Yummmmmm! This place was so good! Donut holes: ohhhh that strawberry cream sauce on top. Yummmm yum yum. I only wish there were more (I shared with three other people) Save yourself and just get your own order. You'll thank me Biscuits: uh also yum! I loved these. Well. If you're looking to be completely ignored, this is the spot. Came here as a table of 4 for our friend's birthday while visiting the city and sat for almost three hours. Our server, Sabrina, ran our credit card on the wrong ticket twice and refused to split our ticket unless it was an even split, in addition to CHARGING US FOR A BIRTHDAY DESSERT we didn't ask for! In between voiding those payments, she never came back to apologize. When we asked for a manager she became frustrated and never came back to the table. We waited over 45 minutes to pay our tickets. By the time we left, the restaurant was closing. Even the manager couldn't be apologetic about the situation. Given how all four of us work in the restaurant industry, this was a completely ridiculous experience. However, I will say that while the menu was small, everything we ordered was tasty (even though some items were incorrect....). read more

Stella San Jac is a delicious Southern style restaurant in downtown Austin. We chose to come here on a whim from the good Yelp reviews and we easily got a reservation the day before our visit. We ordered the biscuits which were good but probably a little too heavy to start. When I got my lobster Mac and cheese I was barely able to eat any of it since the food was so heavy. I ended up bringing a lot of it back to my hotel but it was good. My vegetarian friend had the avocado salad that she thought was really good and filling. I would recommend you visit Stella San Jac while in Austin and make sure you come hungry! read more

Service was fantastic, our waitress was super nice and the reservation system worked as it should and we were seated right away. Restaurant is attached to the Westin. We were in casual clothes but saw folks in fancy gear as well. Our boys ordered a burger and the short ribs and split. My Husband and I split a burger and the Caesar salad with chicken. EVERYTHING was delicious and pricing was fair. Would definitely consider returning next time we are in town. read more

Stella San Jac is an American restaurant with a Southern edge that featured chic, upscale decor in the heart of downtown Austin. I was with a crew of seven and we were running late to our 6pm reservation for Stella San Jac. They were super flexible about adjusting our reservation time. We were given a long booth table upon arrival. For drinks, we ordered two bottles of bubbly rose for the table. While the server opened our bottles, we filled and refilled our glasses ourselves. For starters, we ordered a few orders of biscuits, Brussel sprouts, and beet chips for the table to share. Biscuits are a MUST. Three to an order, they were served with a whipped butter and were melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The brussel sprouts were unique; they were sticky and served with candied jalapeños, a combination I have never seen before and enjoyed. The beet chips did not have the crunch they needed and were oddly soft. Of the seven ladies dining at dinner, five ordered the shrimp and crab roll (myself included). While the seafood tasted fresh, the dish was a miss for me due to a huge lack of seasoning. The dish needed some spice or just an aggressive dosh of salt and pepper to be memorable. We also ordered the deviled eggs which has sausage in them. I will order those every time I come here. I had the salmon eggs Benedict. Great flavors and my only complaint is that the eggs and salmon were on an English muffin instead of the homemade, flakey and melts in your mouth biscuits. ;-) We each had two cocktails and didn't break the bank. After a weekend of inexpensive tacos galore, we decided to end it with a more "traditional" brunch in a nice setting. What did we get? Biscuits, avocado toast, and more chorizo tacos. Oh yeah, a green juice and coffee to start out. Keeping it simple here. The biscuits and the butter were pretty good, the avocado toast with the scrambled egg was really truly on point, the chorizo tacos were just ok. Maybe we were already full, but I think after a weekend of taco truck tacos, these just can't deliver. I enjoyed the green juice and the coffee was nothing special, especially for the price. Service was a bit off. Kind of slow and wrong modifiers on two of the items. Not a huge deal but when the server is initiating the mods (rather than the customer being high maintenance) you figure it'd be right. Didn't bother saying anything because food was still good! To start off the appetizers took 30 minutes to bring out, which was avocado on toast and cheese on bread. It should not take that long, also it was not a busy day at all, maybe 40% capacity. Actual meals took another 10 minutes to come out and they only brought 2 out of 4 meals, and then brought the other 2 meals 8 minutes later, the meals were not worth 20 bucks a piece, you would expect the waygu burgers to be delicious, not. We went around 9:30 am on Sunday, was able to get the table without waiting, but it got crowded very quickly. We ordered biscuit, steel cut oat, American breakfast, chicken & waffle and lemon pancakes. All dishes tasted great, perfect to share with your party. I had breakfast here a couple times, and a couple times I was just here for drinks. Stella is in the Westin hotel building, but it's easy to see from the outside. Let me start with the lemon (blueberry) pancakes. It's a small stack of four, but it's more than it looks! Can we just take a minute and appreciate the lemon syrup? Don't you dare mess with perfection by requesting maple syrup for these. The tang of the lemon and the fluffiness of the pancakes are a sublime combination. Who doesn't love blueberries with lemon? The blueberries offer a nice sweetness amidst the tang of the lemon. The edges of the pancakes had just the right bit of crispiness. My mouth is watering thinking about these things. Pancake perfection. The cocktail selection here is amazing and well done. I enjoyed several with my work team after a hard day of work (and while still working a little, to be honest). I requested a substitution in their Ginger & Rye cocktail, and they were happy to accommodate. Service was great each time I visited. The chairs are comfy, and I like the layout of the place with a dining room somewhat separated from the bar area by a big curtain. The only reason I didn't make my review five stars is because the host was unfriendly. As the first person someone speaks to when they walk in, I always make sure I make a guest or customer welcome. This was not the case. I had a reservation and the attitude right off the bat was that he did not want to seat us. Once we were seated however, our server Trey was fantastic. Our food and drinks came out perfect and our server was honest about his recommendations. I will be returning however, I hope there is a different host/hostess. read more

If I stayed at this hotel, I would think this place was ok, for the convenience of hotel room service. But that's about it. Very mediocre. I would say the problem with most of the dishes was an imbalance of flavors. The biscuits were a great consistency, but too salty. The bone marrow was good, but the other flavors overshadowed the delicate marrow. The burger was fine, but the plentiful fries were straight up a dupe from a DQ chicken strip basket. The crab and shrimp roll had a lot of meat, but too too much mayo and the seafood quality was just fair (although I may have been spoiled by amazing rolls at other places on the coast). The decor was... exactly what you would expect from a hotel. Not a fan. The music was up too loud, and sitting at the sofas with high tables was kind of awkward. I went here last night for a ladies night. We were running late and I called the hostess to let them know we were running late. The hostess confirmed my first and last name and reconfirmed what time I was supposed to arrive. She also asked if I wanted standard, or outside seating and I let her know standard indoor seating. Upon arrival the hostess acted as if my reservation did not exist, and she was very lost looking for my reservation. For about 5-10 minutes she said she could not find it. I was confused because, the restaurant was empty and I'm not sure why she didn't just go ahead and seat us. The hostess then asked us if we wanted to sit at bar. It extremely frustrating, no we did not want to sit at the bar, I called ahead for standard seating, I made the reservation for standard seating. Where was the disconnect? We then went to sit down and order drinks and our male server was somewhat nice, when I ordered my drink he was very weird about how I wanted it served. My friend and I got the burgers and fries they were mediocre burgers nothing to special. We also got the Brussel sprouts and they were drenched in vinegar. We also ordered the biscuits and based on reviews it was supposed to be amazing, and it was nothing special. I was under the impression the biscuits came with honey butter. My other two friends wanted to spilt the fish dish bur for the price and how it came out it was underwhelming. We wondered where the rest of her plate was because the fish was so small. Overall the service was very underwhelming and not everything I thought it was going to be. I'm upset with the "customer service" and the first impression I got from this place. Typically, I am very skeptical of restaurants attached to hotels, because they cater to traveling businessmen and get away with serving mediocre food at exorbitant prices. But when a large group of us came to Stella San Jac for brunch, I was pleasantly surprised. Although the menu is limited, they offer a decent array of brunch small plates and entrees. Each of the small plates we tried were well-executed, and only cost $5-$10 each. Table favorites: Brussel Sprouts, Avocado Toast, & Biscuits. The food takes awhile to come out to the table, but the ambiance is nice and they have a full bar, so it's a relatively pleasant wait. I also ordered the short rib grilled cheese, which was delicious in itself. But I found that I enjoyed the freshness and variety of the small plates more. In the future, that is going to be my priority. read more

Ambience: This place, connected to the Westin, is a bit of a hipster-type restaurant. The service could have been better, especially considering that there weren't many parties at the time. Food: I ordered the American breakfast, my friend ordered the chorizo potato tacos, and my other friend ordered blueberry pancakes. The blueberry pancakes had egg shells in them, which kind of ruined the meal. The chorizo potato tacos were delightful with the savory taste of the chorizo, mixed with the cool sour cream on the bottom. The American breakfast was similar to your typical IHOP/Denny's breakfast, but was better due to the chorizo rather than bacon/breakfast sausage. The chicken was on the spicy side but didn't really have much flavor. My husband got chorizo gravy with biscuits. We received some great service from Ben during our visit. He was able to provide some great cocktail recommendations as well. The Texas Two Step was really wonderful. Spicy yet refreshing. Don't be fooled by the $5 biscuits price tag, they are worth every penny! Great texture yet delicate. The pork chop is a big seller for dinner. Although the flavor was great and it was grilled nicely with a great crust, it was super over cooked. Mine was ordered with the Potato Gratin which is a good choice. The restaurants is located at the lower level of the Westin hotel. I was staying at the Westin so I decided to get breakfast here one morning. I ordered the breakfast chorizo and potato tacos- they were amazing! It doesn't come with enough salsa but you can always ask for more. I also took advantage of the yelp check-in offer and got the biscuits, which were okay. I was expecting them to have a little sweet taste but they were savory. But after eating the "Wagyu" burger here, for $19, I have to say I'm 100% in favor of the government testing people's "Wagyu" to ensure it's actually wagyu. Things this burger could have been, other than Wagyu: -3 day old burger king patty, microwaved -100% lean beef, sun dried -Grass fed dehydrated hamsters -A big ball of lint.
