We were headed to Zach Scott (again) ;) and this is a convenient spot since it's just a few doors down. We made a reservation just to be sure but it did t seem that busy. We sat in the middle (ish) with the bench seating. At first the seats were comfy but after sitting there for a while it became uncomfortable. Perhaps I have long legs but the width of the bench seemed short. My legs kinda feel asleep. We were debating on wine and decided on a "last bottle" which was around 40$ and we discovered that it was out but no one had marked the menu. We chose another bottle and THAT was also gone. It was starting to get a bit frustrating then the waitress told us it was 1/2 price bottles on Wednesday. Yay but would have been nice to know 15 minutes ago. My friend has spent some time living in Austria so there's a wine that she loves on the list. We were able to get a full bottle for 50% off. Yay! It was still $56 but we are teachers so pinching every penny is a must. We got the 28 layered potatoes which was delicious. I wish it was a little bigger. Just the loveliest setting - both indoors and out. We sat outside for brunch on a Saturday, and it would have been easy to spend a few hours here. We ordered the Crisp Gem Lettuce Salad with trout, which they kindly split for us and was plenty for two. The salad was delcious and fish was perfectly cooked. My partner ordered the Cheeseburger, and while he enjoyed the sauces he did not love the burger itself, as it seemed to be slightly overcooked and dry. Carpenter Hall is inside the Carpenter Hotel. It's adorable! We had brunch there on a Saturday and we also stayed a couple of nights, at the hotel which is fantastic! The restaurant also serves drinks and food at the pool area, and we had ordered their delicious shoe string fries at the pool area a couple of times, but at the restaurant we just had a burger and their chips and dip, which were amazing. They did such a great job with the interiors and outdoor spaces at this hotel. It's so cute! It has a gorgeous pool with good service, a coffee shop, and beautiful landscaping throughout the grounds. We had a good rest here, it was quiet and the rooms reminded me of Palm Desert (CA) if you've been to the Ace Hotel there. It's very unique and they did a great job of using the local colors and textures. Will be back to the Carpenter hotel and the Hall! It's really close to Barton Springs. read more

We had such an amazing dinner here, was seriously blown away by our dishes - perfect for a date night or dinner with friends! Parking - street parking in the area is your best bet or valet Service - we came 7:30pm on a Thursday and the restaurant was pretty empty, we sat at the bar and our server was awesome. Food & drink - I got their prickly pair mocktail and it was amazing! was really impressed by their selection of non alcoholic drinks. We shared the chips and dip (chips were house made and you could tell), burrata (really unique flavor pairing with their balsamic strawberries) and the charred cabbage. Meet up with some friends from bookclub! There's a spacious cafe area but it was closed when we arrived so we ordered appetizers at the restaurant. We sat on the patio. I wanted something similar to a Lychee Martini but they didn't have it so the waitress recommended a Blood Orange Martini ($15) which was not on the menu but, a pleasant surprise! and it was delicious! I also ordered the Hamachi Crudo ($19) It tasted incredible! The passion fruit was tangy--citrus forward, fresh and paired so well with the hamachi. This is not a shareable dish, more like a palate cleanser due to the size & It should definitely be plated and not served in a bowl because it was difficult to eat this way. Service was great and we didn't feel rushed. One of the best paced services I've had in a restaurant in a long time. The menu is limited and the prices are pretty unreasonable for some of the dishes but I'd come back again just for the Crudo! Unfortunately, we hoped for a better experience. Ambiance is certainly a plus. Carpenters Hall has a creative design with a modern and spacious aesthetic. We loved the idea to recycle the building (formerly a school). Service was okay. Host is very welcoming. Manager is vigilant and was moving around quite a bit to assist with service. Heaters were scattered throughout the patio, but not all worked. We, of course, did not have a functioning heater and were cold throughout our entire meal. A light blanket was offered...but it would've been better if we could move under a heater. The server provided basic needs, taking our order. A drink order was forgotten and, despite being told we'd have to leave by a certain hour, we waited beyond that time (about 20-30 minutes) for a check...still in the cold. Food was not at all worth the value. This was a Thanksgiving pre-fix meal...so not very flexible. The pork was dry, and the wagyu pretty fatty. Lots of potato options, and many of them dry. In fact, the whipped potatoes were not whipped...I'd say lightly mashed at the most. The mac and cheese VERY dry...like toasted noodle crumbles. I, honestly, can't help but think that much of this meal was prepared in advance and therefore not fresh when it was served. The meal, however, did start strong with a tangy butternut squash soup. We were quite surprised and thought, for sure, the rest of the meal would get continuously better. I don't know if I'll be back. Nice staff, but I think our party would have preferred making a simple meal at home. read more

Carpenters Hall is a restaurant that is part of the Carpenter Hotel. The building was originally a meeting hall for members of the carpenter union, built in the late 1940s. They serve lunch, brunch, & dinner. Happy hour is from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. I forgot to mention in my review about the coffee bar that parking can be an issue. We have used valet service once or twice. Other times, parked a bit away and just walked, and even scootered from home once. Gotta say the staff are really on it and nice. I've had brunch and dinner here and was not disappointed in the least! The food is good. Like GOOD! Sourdough waffles are yummy in my tummy, folks! They are served with rhubarb jelly, syrup, and pickled fruit. Add a side of bacon and you've got the perfect brunch meal. The Carpenter Club is really good, too. However, unlike camp, the food here is elevated with a price point to match (ie: $12 for a yogurt parfait, $9 for hashbrowns, $17 for a cheeseburger.) I came here for a weekend brunch date, where they offer two categories: with eggs and without. I ordered a mimosa, but surprised to see it served in a tiny flute. This place has been on my list for a while and, wow, it did not disappoint. Stylish, minimalist, but elegant dining room, and extremely friendly and personable wait staff. Everything was terrific and it was hard to choose because the menu had so many terrific options. My server recommended the steak frites, and I'm glad she did, I actually like when steak comes sliced like this because you know the temperature will be perfect. Full disclosure: We stayed in the attached hotel, and only visited the Carpenters Hall for cocktails (okay, and one dessert). And because we came back again and again for the same cocktail, consider this review primarily for what we consider the best cocktail in the house - the Teaches of Peaches. The Teaches of Peaches is a spicy peach margarita but it's not too spicy and not too sweet. In fact, it's super well balanced and we had several of them over the course of our stay. We also tried the homemade chocolate chip cookie sandwich. Both the chocolate chip cookies and the vanilla ice cream were outstanding each on their own, but didn't really go well all together. We still enjoyed it, though ! Carpenters Hall is set in the back of the Carpenter Hotel lobby with lots of bar seating and overall a great space to relax. Went into this spot after walking around Lady Bird lake with a friend. Ambience is very welcoming I ordered the rainbow trout and my friend ordered the mussels. We're doing dry January so we didn't get a chance to try any of the cocktails or wine which was a bummer as it looked like they had a great selection. My rainbow trout came with grits and it was cooked perfect. I do wish it was a bit bigger as I wasn't entirely full after finishing my entire plate. For $30 you should be full. My friend loved her mussels which came with delicious bread. She has a bad wheat allergy which she informed the waitress of but she must have forgot as when the food came my friend double checked before eating ( thank goodness ) and their mistake was noted so we had to wait to bring her out a new one. Someone mentioned they're between chefs, which might explain the light offerings. We split the short ribs--more like BBQ steak than traditional short ribs--which was fine, just not what we expected. The sides didn't match the menu description exactly, but they were okay. We asked our server if the entrée was meant for one or to share (it was 2x the price of other entrees)--he said it could go either way--but it was definitely shareable. Cocktails were great, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. Overall, the food was a bit underwhelming, but we'd give it another try if we were staying at the hotel again. The space itself is really lovely and the outside patio feels a bit like an oasis, especially when you find yourself unexpectedly caught in a Texas rainstorm. read more

My wife ordered eggs Florentine which came out looking great. The eggs were hard boiled. The second try the eggs were undercooked. The flavors were good but the chef needs some egg lessons. My burger was decent but no way does it deserve a top 10 spot for Austin . Austin restaurants are expensive and not that good. I am a great cook and more and more hate eating out! read more

Carpenter Hotel is a beautiful and vibey hotel in downtown Austin near Barton Springs. First impressions: The person at reception was so chill and welcoming! I went in to get some work one, and they let me know I could work in the coffee shop/ lobby area or the actual restaurant. The hotel is adorable. They have tons of cute decor and cool merch available to purchase. Food: The food itself is a little on the pricey side, but they do have a happy hour from 3p-5p that takes a few bucks off of apps or drinks. I tried the burger. I ordered the oyster mushrooms, which I really enjoyed - think fried calamari type app - but with mushrooms. It was crunchy but didn't feel oily/greasy, but the stars for me were the dipping sauces, particularly the vinaigrette (Smoked Leek Salpicon?). It was so flavorful, I wanted to buy a bottle of it to take home. The smoked salmon was good but pretty basic and nothing you couldn't easily make at home. Carpenters Hall was a delicious treat. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice casual, there were people dressed in t-shirts and shorts, but also nicer outfits too. Figured this was a mix of people staying in the hotel. We got a few drinks as well, which were all good. Wine menu was more expensive than it should have been, with the most cost effective bottle of wine being $65. Cocktails were priced $14 - $16. We ordered shishito peppers, fried oyster mushrooms and house rolls for appetizer. The peppers were great, sautéed nicely and a good size portion. Fried oyster mushrooms were a big highlight along with their sauces. The house rolls were flaky and dense, the butter that came with it w was so good. We ordered the house special porkchop, which was good, but smaller than we anticipated. We were told we could share this dish and that was definitely not the case. It was good but advertised as more food than what came on the plate. The meat was tender and cooked to a nice temperature. Burger and fries were good, but not impressive for being $24. Overall the evening was nice spent at this restaurant and plan on being back with guests. read more

I've been wanting to go to Carpenters Hall for brunch for years now, and I'm really glad I finally found the time. The menu is pretty limited, so I had a hard time choosing between a couple of mediocre-sounding plates. However, I was surprised by how yummy everything was. Service was also decent. My party asked to move outdoors to enjoy the nice weather, and they were very accommodating. I ordered the egg sammie, and I was so happy. It was delicious. The egg was super fluffy, and the bun was incredibly buttery and soft. I also loved the aioli that they spread inside, and I was pretty sad when I finished it. I would definitely come back just to order the egg sammie. My friends ordered the continental breakfast and Carpenter breakfast, and they also enjoyed their plates. I wish they had more of a selection, but I found such a delicious dish that it doesn't bother me. Chris suggested the "teaches with peaches" cocktail which is a perfectly balanced tequila cocktail with a little spice. for dinner, I enjoyed the famous chicken schnitzel which is seriously big enough to serve a family!
