Terrible doctor. Student doctors were much better than her- unfortunately, she shut them off. Dr. Joe said and wrote on my report the exact opposite of what my ENT doctor in Mexico said. Based on my experience, Mexican doctors are much better than doctors in the U.S. (so having insurance is good for nothing here.) Also, she didn't even want to refer me for allergy testing because I'm a foreign student, so she assumed I would not live here for a long time, therefore not worth it. Short, rude, clearly didn't want or have time to see me. They shouldn't have booked me with her if she's sooo busy. Being rude, ignoring my questions, and then responding by laughing either in my face or about me, then apologize (still giggling) that she isn't laughing at me. This happened multiple times. Her resident / doctor in training was better but unfortunately my appointment was with her boss, Dr. Joe. Update: The recurring sinus infection I was seeing her about returned a week after the visit, in addition to the giant bill. read more

My experience with UIC and Dr Joe has been a personal nightmare. anyone planing to have surgery done at UIC should seriously reconsider. The whole department is dirty and unorganized and the whole staff has little regard for their patients. My life has been permanently effected by my decision to let Dr Joe perform surgery on me. Dr. Joe is a hero of mine. In 2010, I saw her for what I thought was just a sinus infection, but got ambushed with a severe diagnosis, requiring surgery (which she performed). Since then, I must follow up with Dr. Joe once or twice a year, and her competence and great customer service remain intact. If Dr. Joe moved to another hospital, I'd follow her there. I don't trust any other ENT doctor with my precarious condition. She's kept me alive and healthy. read more

Dr. Jo is the best doctor i have had the pleasure to meet. She performed surgery on me and i had the the trust and faith in her. Dr. Jo is the epitome of what a doctor should be. I would never recommend going to Dr. JOE. I researched alot of you tube videos and reviews in regards to sinus surgery. Most of the good reviews revolved around a newer procedure with balloons. She said she does do them. After the procedure she said i wasn't a candidate for balloons and had to do "traditional"surgery. I thought UIC was more up to date than "traditional" surgery. weeks later i am in pain, and still don't feel better. Ironically, as i was telling my co-workers about this, she said she was told the same thing by Dr. Joe and had "traditional" surgery. read more

Dr. Stephanie Joe and her team are the very best ever and my family are eternally grateful for what she did for our mom. We HIGHLY recommend Dr. Joe. My mom was having problems with what she thought was post nasal drip and her primary care physician ran tests that found a serious issue. We were referred to Dr. Joe. From the very first time we called her office we found her staff to be kind, considerate, and extremely helpful. We expected to go to her office and be rushed. That was not the case. We found Dr. Joe to be very friendly and knowledgeable. She took her time with my mom and explained everything that was going on and what she needed to do in order to repair it. Dr. Joe was very clear in explaining the risks vs. rewards and really set my mom's mind at ease. She ran more tests and was absolutely sure about what needed to be done. The day of the procedure Dr. Joe was able to use a less invasive method, which really eased my mom's fears and made recovery time a lot shorter. We pray that my mom never has this issue again; however, we know that Dr. Joe will be our first call if it ever decides to re-occur. I had such a terrible experience with Dr. Stephanie Joe and the otolaryngology department of University of Illinois Medical Center that I cannot recommend the doctor or the hospital under any circumstances. The trouble began when I saw Dr. Joe in hopes of determining the cause of my sinus trouble. After waiting 3 hours, the doctor saw me and recommended doing a nasal scope, which involved viewing the inside of my nose with a camera. Despite communicating to the doctor that I wanted to learn the cause of my trouble, she focused on dealing with the symptoms via nasal steroids like every doctor I'd seen in the past. Even so, I wasn't too upset until I received my first bill from the hospital. The hospital itself charged me $4,081.20 for nasal/sinus endosurgery, approximately $2,900 of which was just for the use of the operating room. Since I never had a surgery and I never was in an operating room, I thought for sure there must be a mistake, so I contacted the billing department at the hospital and reached a very angry woman who stated that the bill was correct and that doctors aren't required to inform patients when they are performing really expensive procedures on them. Shortly thereafter, I received another bill for $762 from the doctor. After contacting the billing department several times and having them rudely refuse to review the bill, I contacted my insurance company and asked them to review the claim. Unfortunately, despite trying for over 4 months, the insurance company could not get the hospital or the doctor to forward my medical records for review. Last week I received a notice from the hospital that after 30 days they were going to send the bill collectors after me, so I just paid my share of both bills - nearly $400. I'm still not sure whether the bill was correct or not, but either way it was a very overpriced office visit. The woman I spoke with at my insurance company said that receiving very large bills for visits to doctors that work out of hospitals is very common and that not once have patients been informed ahead of time that they would incur such huge bills for doctor visits. To me, this is a huge scam by the hospitals and it highlights a major problem with our healthcare system. If physicians want to have their offices in hospitals, they should foot the overpriced bill for the space and the equipment. So, my recommendation to everyone is if you have to see a doctor, make sure he or she works out of a normal office and not a hospital. read more

I am changing ENTs because of where I work now. Dr Joe is the 3rd ENT I saw while ENT shopping. Luckily I don't need any more sinus or ear surgeries now (I had 3 sinus surgeries and 2 ear surgeries). Dr Joe was the 5th doctor who mentioned additional allergy testing and shots. I am on 4 different allergy medications and still have major problems. I did mention to Dr Joe that unless the shots included treating me for dusts and molds, I wasn't interested. All 4 other doctors said they would not treat me for dusts or molds (my worst problem besides dogs). Dr. Joe said its more difficult to treat for dusts and molds, but they would do it. AND I was even more surprised to hear they can give shots for dog and cat allergies (Luckily I'm not allergic to cats). The last ENT I went to (not dr joe) wanted to operate on my mastoid bone (part of the skull) every year. Dr Joe agreed if that bone isn't causing problems to let it be. YAY read more
