When they say it's "close enough" or "it doesn't have to be exact", you know they are acting extremely specific and intentional. All the "close enough" numbers will all work out in their favor.... odometer, sales price, tax, especially trade-in, and DEFINITELY the pay-off amount of any loan you might have. Looking back at all the numbers and notes, not a single set of numbers matched, not one. The salesman stripped all the screws that hold the license plate, when I ask for a folder they didn't have one so he went and got a very old, very used and worn out manilla folder that was prob taken from the garbage can. Anything they need to "go check on" will take all day, so you're left triddling your thumbs literally all day (6-8 hours, both times, for me), with no amenities whatsoever, even the bathroom was locked. For once I wish I could give 0 stars. The experience was friendly at first but then it just felt like I was being taken advantage of as a young women. I shouldn't feel like I need to have my parents or a significant other to come with me to buy a car. I specifically said I was there to test drive the car and feel it out as it was my first time purchasing an SUV. Multiple times he repeatedly asked if I was ready to put down a deposit. I said no and they didn't even want to show me what the financing options would be. Not only that- they are partnered with Costco's car program and offer the price without us having to do the negotiating. Because I was going down this route- I feel like I was also low balled on a trade in offer. I also felt insulted with comments about my driving skills. I thought Bait and Switch was outlawed in the 1970's but apparently it isn't. I also wish I'd read all these terrible reviews before we attempted to purchase a vehicle that does NOT exist. To begin with, we are in the middle of a pandemic and their employees are NOT wearing masks. There is a sign on the door that says masks must be worn inside the building and we did, but THEY DID NOT. We pre-qualified through Capitol One where this car was listed (it was listed on MANY websites including Stephen's website where it still remains) and took the pre-qualification letter with us. The salesman barely glanced at it. He left the room for a minute and came back with a fake look of sadness and said 'sorry, this car sold this morning but I've got a list of other cars that are available.' This car has been on their website for 6 weeks and we confirmed it was STILL available a HALF HOUR before we arrived at the dealership. Please do NOT waste your valuable time at this business. Dishonest! half-assed work to appease the insurance company. They called me three times telling me they needed to replace one tire after an accident, and my other three were "falling apart" and offered quotes for the other tires .... After questioning this assessment every time since I had an oil change the week before the accident with no concerns and the tires being about a year old, I questioned if driving it 9 days before it was brought to the garage since it was "drivable" if that caused the bad tires. Dorthy from Allstate said " driving on a bad tire for ~only~ 9 days definitely wouldn't cause damage. Dorthy then called me back saying no tires were replaced and my car was ready. When I picked up the car several dashboard warning lights appeared, lights were out on the passenger rear where I got hit and the driver side headlight. When I asked about the warnings the Collision Center Manager Bruce told me it was like that, not caused by accident. Buyer Beware! This is a clear case of deceptive and financial abuse on a trusting elderly person - On December 1, 2023, I provided sales with a spec sheet outlining what I wanted for a new vehicle. I told them up front that my time was limited and its ok if I don't get it now. I would be traveling and then leaving for Florida for the winter. I was assured by the General Manager Cody Gill that he had favors to collect and could make it happen prior to my departure. I was notified by them they found me a vehicle. I went in for pickup on December 18th, and was deceived into believing that the vehicle was exactly what I had requested in the spec sheet. I requested a 2024 model. They even gave me 2024 owner's manual as part of the deceptive practice. Also, all of the additional accessories I wanted and paid for were not installed on the vehicle. They conveniently forgot to mention them at the time of pickup. They told me one would take 4-6 months before I received it and to return the next day at noon to get one of the other accessories installed. When I returned the next day, I was told it could not be done as the person who does it wasn't going to be there and that I would have to come back again. When I told them I didn't have time to return, that I wanted my old vehicle back, I was told they will look into it. I have heard nothing to date. They left 2 voicemails for me to call them to discuss my file. Twice I called back Victor Bequary. He told me he couldn't talk and was rude and hung up on me. I requested them to reply to my email so that there would be a paper trail of the transaction. I do not trust anything they say. If they had good intentions of resolving, there should not be any issue in documenting it in writing. I escalated to the CEO and President, Stephen J. Barberino, after I had contacted other staff a number of times, but have not received any attempt to resolve. I have text and email documentation outlining these details. read more

I've been hunting for a RAV4 Prime for weeks and they took one in that was not yet under deposit I called to confirm the details on the car and made an appointment to come the next morning to drive it. I even put down a deposit of $500 over the phone. I was told that the car was for sale at MSRP. So I call again on my way there the next morning and everything sound great. I have been looking at a 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid on CarGurus at this dealership for a few days. The car was listed at $25,548. I called and made an appointment to go test drive it. Drove 40 minutes to get there, test drove the car, liked it and decided to talk numbers to see what they would offer me for my trade. The sales guy came back to the table and told me the price of the car was over $34k!!!! I asked why the price online was so much lower and why they are misleading people to believe the price of the car was lower than it really is. If I had known up front that it was $34k, I would not have wasted my time even callin in it, nevermind going there. That is outside of my price range and they led me to believe I could afford this car. After I was presented with a price almost $10k higher than it is listed for online, I got up and walked out. I had purchased a Toyota from this dealer about 4 years ago. I consistently went to them for servicing and was never disappointed. I felt that the work done was quality and it was always ready when they promised. Because I lived alone, if the work would take several hours, they would actually drive me home and then pick me up later when it was finished. I have never experienced a deal/service center with such courtesy. The oil changes can take a little longer than 30 minutes like other car places tend to promise, but that's ok. Their waiting area has television, coffee and chairs. They are located next to a home depot so you could always browse there if you feel so inclined. read more

It pains me to write this review because my first couple of experiences at this dealer were quite positive. But after my last ordeal, I have to share my experience. I have a 2013 Suzuki Kizashi which boasts one the industries' best warranties, 7/100K on the powertrain, 3/36 bumper-to-bumper. Back in July I noticed a leak under my vehicle coming from the bottom of the transmission housing. This was alarming as there was only 22K miles on my Suzuki at the time. Stephen's Toyota is the closest authorized Suzuki service center to me (at over 20 miles away), so I paid them a visit. I indicated that there was a leak that appeared to be coming from the transmission. I had taken several photos on my cell phone and showed the service advisor. They quickly informed me that it was my oil pan leaking, not the transmission. They were able to get me right in and dropped the oil pan and resealed it. The next day I noticed the "splash shield" under the motor was never reinstalled and they had to order a new one. I had to make another trip there to have it installed. Then early November, I noticed the leak was still there. I got under the vehicle and took more photos which looked just like the pics I took in July. On 11/4 I was back at Stephen's. They informed me that it was gear oil and was the axle seal as they had to remove the axle for the oil pan work back in July. They had to order the part and it would take a day or so. I asked about a loaner/rental as according to Suzuki's website, one should be provided. The service advisor said that Suzuki does not because they are "under bankruptcy." A quick call to Suzuki's customer service and they indicated that as long as I'm under warranty and the repair will take more than a day, they cover a rental. Suzuki had to call Stephen's to get me the loaner. After replacing the axle seal, it was still leaking. They then did a dye test and it turns out the culprit was an input shaft seal which required the transmission to be removed. My transmission was low a quart of gear oil, which is almost half the entire capacity. There was never an oil leak from my engine, or axle; it was the input shaft seal the entire time. Additionally when I was showing my co-worker the photos of the leak, he noticed the flywheel was exposed and said there should be a cover. I called Stephen's and they assured me there was no cover. After some sleuthing on the internet, I confirmed there is a cover and called them back with the part number. The service advisor looked it up and verified it and said they must not have replaced it when they did the oil pan in July. When following up on the status, I was continuously informed they kept getting the incorrect parts from Suzuki, due to Suzuki's "bankruptcy." After speaking with Suzuki Customer Service, they tracked what parts the dealer ordered and they concluded they were ordering the wrong parts. I got the call on 12/3 that my Kizashi was ready, almost one month to the day from my initial visit. Stephen's had put 200 miles on my car. The gas tank was on empty. My car had not been washed and there is a good size door ding on my rear quarter panel. I could have easily gone back in with my complaints, but I just wanted my car back and to get home. It's unfortunate what occurred because they were pleasant and apologetic. But I was genuinely put off by them constantly blaming Suzuki's bankruptcy as the cause for the delay and them just throwing parts and making guesses as to where the leak was coming from. Bottom line, if they did the due diligence back in July and traced the leak with dye, then they would have known it was the input shaft seal and we would have avoided this entire debacle (and cost on their end.) I just hope that no permanent damage was done with the gear oil so low for so long. read more

Careful of the bait and switch!! I'd give them zero stars if it were an option. This review is based entirely on a recent experience. My son was looking to replace his current car with a newer model. He did a lot of searching for the right model and found one at Stephen's Auto Mall in Bristol. It met all his requirements (i.e. low mileage, reasonable cost, make and model he wanted, etc...). He called to find out more about the car on Saturday morning, mostly to see if it was still there so we could go and see it and take it for a test drive. The salesperson said yes, it's here, it's a beauty.... Would you like to make an appointment to see it? My son said sure; let's make it for 60 minutes from now as that's how long it will take me to get there. The salesperson said great, looking forward to seeing you. Off we went to Stephen's with my son being preapproved for his loan and the title of his old car in hand..... When we got there, the first person we spoke to knew nothing of having the make/model car we were looking for. After a couple calls, he sent us to speak with another salesperson that basically sent us to yet another salesperson in another building. When we met the third person, he brought us into his office with a big smile and sat us down only to say the car was sold yesterday. He asked if we'd be interested in seeing X.... X being a newer car, different make and model, more money. I asked why he allowed us to drive an hour to get there just to find out the car was no longer available... he couldn't answer and didn't even offer an apology. I asked to see a manager, not that I thought they could do anything but more for the sake of ensuring they knew this was bad business practice and that I wasn't happy about driving an hour, specifically after we asked if it was still available only to find out it wasn't. He introduced me to the sales manager... another person that didn't even acknowledge any wrong doing or offer any apologies. All he said was I can't produce the car now, would you be interested in X? I told him how disappointed I was and that I hoped he knew this was bad business... again, no apology. On the way home, we found a similar car to the one my son was looking for at a location 60 minutes from our house in the opposite direction.... In the end, it worked out better for him as the car we subsequently went to see after the fiasco at Stephen's was much nicer and my son bought it. However, it wasn't without the displeasure of dealing with the morons at Stephen's Auto Mall... Never Again! I can only imagine how poor the service is after you buy something from them.....Buyer beware! read more

My late mom bought a new Toyota Yaris from these guys in 2010. The MSRPs of this car then ranged from 12,605 - $14,165, but her model was the cheapest - the 3 door hatchback. They charged her almost $17,000, and the out-the-door total was a little under $20,000. For the cheapest Yaris with no options. Ok, so they got her. She was 82 then, so I guess she was fair game. But the last little tidbit is that selling the car now in 2016, I learned that the whole driver's side door and back panels were damaged at the dealership and extensively repaired. None of this showed up on a Carfax report since it was handled internally, but two independent appraisers both pointed out all the repair work. The value of this car with 22,500 miles in terrific condition is $3,000. There is no recourse for me here, but buy from this dealership at your own peril.You are warned! read more

Over the summer I was shopping around for a used car and ended up at Stephen's Auto Mall. They had a large inventory, but not what I was looking for. I sat down with a salesman to talk about what I was looking for. When I got up to leave, another employee ran over and started yelling, swearing and hitting things, right in front of me just because the gentleman helping me didn't sell me a car (it was the end of the day and end of the month). Needless to say, this was downright unprofessional and frankly, scared me. When I got home I realized that the license plate holders on the car I owned were changed to Stephen's Automall plates. Despite the fact that they illegally touched my car without my permission I did not think it was worth my effort to call and confront them for their immaturity. It has been seven months since I visited Stephen's Automall and they have not stopped calling me, to the point of harassment. Overall, I would NOT recommend going to Stephen's Automall for any reason. I did not even buy a car from them and yet they will not leave me alone. They told me I had to make an appointment to come see it. Weird, but okay. I made the appointment, I had to take time off from work because Bristol isn't exactly next door. I get a confirmation email from their online customer service rep AND the salesman the day before. I get down there 10 minutes early, wait around for half an hour, and finally the salesman comes out to greet me. Not satisfied. I tell him I'm there because I had the appointment to see this certain car. He says he'll get the keys and we'll take it for a test-drive. He comes back 10 minutes later. He says he can't find the car. Let me reiterate that: HE CANNOT FIND THE CAR. You have a thousand vehicles in your stock and you LOSE a car?! No. They obviously sold it and wanted to save face. They then say, "BUT you might want to look at some of our newer models!" The ol' bait'n'switch... That's how they get you. I took my wife's 2004 Corolla to Stephen's April 2013 for an air bag recall - first time ever to this dealership. I too found the signage on their property very poor - didn't know where to turn, where to park, or even which door to enter. After walking inside it wasn't much better - just pure luck that I made the right turn and stopped at the right desk. Friendly reception and they finished the recall work in a short time. I also requested an oil change which cost a few bucks less than where I usually go in Hartford - that was nice. While that was being done, as usual the environmental filter behind the glove compartment was checked. They said it was dirty and would cost $57 to replace - I passed on that - $57 sounded way out of order from what I could remember from a previous replacement (they quoted the same price to others in the waiting area). A few days later, I bought the filter retail for $18 and change, and installed it in 10 minutes. Very simple procedure that I got from an internet video - an experienced technician I'm sure could change it in two minutes max. That means that Stephen's was trying to charge about $40 for about 2 minutes time to change this paper filter. I sent them an email over their website for an explanation. A lady wrote to me twice, even a follow-up, to be sure that another lady had contacted me with an explanation. Of course as you can guess, I never heard from the lady who was going to explain the rate they wanted to charge. read more

I am COMPLETELY disgusted by this dealership! I made the mistake of buying a used Mercedes from them. Ive had it about 3 or 4 months now. I brought it back to them about a month ago because it seemed as tho the brakes were dragging and it caused the car to shake (that was my perception of it but being a girl and NOT a mechanic, what do I know!!) Anyhow, I get there and they don't work on Mercedes, I'll have to take it to a Mercedes Dealer. Are you kidding me??!! The whole reason I bought a car there (2 by the way, one for myself and one for my son!!) was for the convenience of being close to home for repairs and such. SO it takes me another week to get to Mercedes, and they schedule me for 2 weeks out. Come to find out.... The car has after market brake pads on it and the emergency brake was tightened too tight - which makes sense why I thought it was dragging. And to make matters worse EVERY ONE OF MY RIMS ARE BENT!!!! So, armed with this info, I go speak to the manager about all of this. I had to pay $250 to UNTIGHTEN the emergency brake, that CLEARLY they over tightened because theres NEW F'ing brake pads on the car!!!! Uggghhhhh I'm sssssoooooo mad!!! I also tell him about the rims and ask him what he can do for me. He looks the car up and his words to me - You put 5000 miles on this car, were not doing anything. WHOOPDIE F'ING DOO!!!! 5000 miles is NOTHING!!!! I've never been so insulted in all my life!! What does he think I was doing in that car?? 4 wheeling?? As I left, I said that I would NEVER buy another car from them again. He said OK. What a disgusting, insulting, condescending experience. Make sure they are equipped to repair whatever car you do buy (they even had to send my son to a Mazda Dealer because they didn't have a tool to work on his) Other than the salesman and the finance guy - This place is a complete waste of MONEY!!! Not a good dealership! From sales to service, I recommend going to another dealership. Other dealerships had better prices on vehicles without all the games and haggling, and the service department is not good. I talked to a former salesman that worked there for 10 years, and he told me that several times they forgot to even put the oil back in the car for a simple oil change. Many others have complained, as noted on websites and the BBB, and my most recent experience is so bad I don't know how they aren't involved in lawsuits. read more
