What an awful experience. The restaurant was slow and not crowded. I was seated at a booth and…read morewaited while others who came in after me were greeted and orders taken. Finally someone brought me chips and salsa. I ordered water and food. Twenty minutes later no water and no food. The server brought items to others but apparently water was too much of a challenge to get. I placed a $5 bill on the table for the four chips I ate. I brought up to management the issue with her solution being that they would pack my food to go. She chose to ignore the no water issue or the service problems. Terrible experience

I'm surprised that someone decided to open another Central American restaurant in Charlotte…read moreespecially when there is already another well-established one across the street but here is Las Palmas in what used to be John's Family Restaurant on Westinghouse near South Tryon. We were welcomed and seated, having dinner with a friend. The menu is extensive and focused on seafood with lots of crab legs and shrimp and such. I'm not one to usually trust seafood this far from the coastline so I chose the Carne Asada which was very good. A nice portion with plenty of skirt steak cooked medium rare as requested with rice and beans and a little pico and a roasted pepper. Main complaint is that it was not very hot. I think these plastic plates are inexpensive for the restaurant but they make it hard to keep it hot from the kitchen and on the table. Otherwise, the service was good and the drinks were strong. We would (and will) return to Las Palmas. [Review 99 of 2025 - 4069 in North Carolina - 23666 overall]

The portions are good and the food tastes good. I'm not not a fan of the home fries because they normally come out room temp and don't have much flavor. Another con is they charge for ice and for water. Other than that I appreciate the speedy service and basic menu. They even have a drive thru. The restaurant had tables, should you desire to stay there and eat. It was clean for the most part, from what I could tell, having left my glasses in the car. I asked a couple of questions and then placed my order. It didn't take long for my food to come out. The food smelled absolutely amazing. I got the food home and started tasting everything I purchased in the pictures below. Personally, I did not care for the vast majority of the meals. The fish & chicken were so hard and dry that they were like the Sahara Desert. It was flavorless, as were the vegetables. They tasted like they were fresh out of the can. I won't be going back there again, but if I did, it would only be for the mac & cheese, potato salad, and the roll. Not that they were delicious, but they were far better than the rest of the food on the platter. It's a NO for me.

As a girl born in Texas, a really good chicken fried steak is practically part of my DNA. It's one…read moreof those comfort foods I don't eat often because it's so rich--but when I see it on a menu, it absolutely catches my attention. That's exactly what drew me to The Southern Pecan in SouthPark. Here in the South, they call it country fried steak, and I'm happy to report this one did not disappoint. I met a colleague there for lunch, and everything about the experience felt easy from the start. The restaurant is located in Phillips Place, a lovely little shopping area that feels a bit polished and upscale--with shops like Orvis, Tory Burch, and even a Restoration Hardware restaurant nearby. They do offer valet parking, which is a nice touch, though honestly parking is easy enough on your own. We had reservations through OpenTable and were seated on the patio, which was absolutely delightful for this time of year in Charlotte. The weather was perfect, the setting was relaxed, and the service started off warm and welcoming right away. Now, the food. The country fried steak was beautifully cooked--crispy on the outside, tender inside, and served with creamy mashed potatoes and gravy that hit all the nostalgic notes from my Texas upbringing. I paired it with a vegetable side (I believe it was broccoli or corn), and it was a classic Southern plate done right. We also enjoyed a couple of cocktails, and to finish, we split a praline bread pudding, which felt like the perfect Southern ending to the meal--sweet, comforting, and indulgent without being overwhelming. The staff was friendly and attentive, and one of the things I continue to appreciate about Charlotte is how easy it is to connect with people. We even chatted with diners at nearby tables, which added to that welcoming, community feel that makes dining out here so enjoyable--especially for someone coming from the Bay Area. Prices felt fair for the quality, the setting, and the portion sizes, and overall the experience left a great impression. Bottom line: If you're craving a solid Southern classic like country fried steak--or just want a relaxed patio lunch in a charming part of SouthPark--The Southern Pecan is definitely worth a visit. And as someone happily eating my way through Charlotte and the Southeast, this stop was another reminder that the journey has been a delicious one.
