AMAZING!!! Why did I wait so long?!?! Alas, spent a fortune on "Made in Pescadero" dining room chairs about 9 years ago that proceeded to be decimated by 4 adolescent children who had a penchant for leaning back on two legs. Two of the chairs broke and were banished to a closet. In an attempt to prevent additional havoc, the boys were assigned to a bench-which saved the other 6-but didn't work well for dinner parties or holidays. (Do not relígate friends with sciatica to a hard bench). Made in pescadero had closed, yet I found the chair maker with some online sleuthing. He said there was no way to repair. Then, I remembered Sterling! During a quick 30 minute lunch break between zooms, I brought over a chair, and after chatting with Michelle, I decided to reupholster the now fraying faux leather on all 8. We contacted Sterling about getting 15 chairs fixed at our business, the chairs are about 15 years old and the seats were sunken in. Within 2 weeks of our initial call (spoke with Michelle), all 15 chairs were redone and back in place at our business. Not good at reliability, poor workmanship twice... but they tried twice to make it right! I brought in a foam cushion and material to upholster. Simply... one cushion. It cost $635 to upholster ONE cushion. I thought it was rather expensive, but figured they must be really good and I really needed it done by Christmas (I brought it to them on Nov 6) They told me it would be ready by Dec 17th at the latest.... Dec 17 came and went... no call, no nothing. I called them on Dec 21 and got their voicemail saying they just started a 3 week "break for the holidays" and would be back Jan 6. My cushion that I needed for the holidays ... now it's going to take 9 weeks... to upholster a single cushion that I provided all materials for ... for $635!!! They didn't even have the decency to call and let me know. I guess they just assume that their customers don't care how many months it takes.... Did I say $635 to upholster one cushion (not including materials?) Zero way to get in touch with anyone. Left messages, emailed, nothing. At least give me the option of getting my materials back when you go on vacation for 3 weeks and your overdue on when you promised my job would be done. When I finally talked to someone, they said my job got mistakenly put in their file that gave them 8 weeks to do it, so they hadn't even started. They said they'd do it first thing when they get back and they give me my money back. Can't do anything about not having the cushion I needed for Christmas.. (and this was an 8' bay window cushion.. centerpiece for the room). When they finished the cushion... brought it home, didn't fit, they didn't use my new firm 4" foam, but an old, discolored, sift flimsy 3" foam. It wasn't even close to fitting. One corner was pointed, one was blunt, the zipper was in the wrong place???? I called them and they said they must have simply messed up my order and they'd redo it again. They insisted on coming out to measure the window to ensure it's the right fit. They "hoped" there would be enough fabric that I provided as the fabric was 20 years old and not replaceable... ugh. They redid the cushion again. It looks okay and mostly fits... but sticks out over the front edge an inch,.. clearly not a professional job. Plenty of better upholstery places in the Bay Area... go elsewhere! read more

I highly recommend Sterling. I've used them a couple of times in the past. Recently they fixed a tuft button on my velvet chair and it looks great! I showed up with the wrong chair. I was so upset, I had to drive all the way back to Fremont to bring the correct chair. (i have 2 identical) when I arrived they fixed it on the spot for me at no charge. We had our sofa set for about 20 years and it traveled with us all over the world as we moved from place to place. It had a very unique pattern, but it had seen better days. Not a happy experience. We had 10 dining chairs re-upholstered to give them a fresh look. When the job was complete, they were delivered to my home and upon inspection it was clear that the finish was poorly executed (see picture). I had expected quality work (a previous job some years ago was good) and was shocked that most of the chair corners had 'protruding ears' and i asked for them to be taken back for a redo. Instead of "we'll make everything right" attitude, I was told "this is not a factory. We're just human. We are not going to redo the chairs" (Michelle). While this was happening I called to speak with the owner (Dave) only to receive the same message. For a job total of $1,860 I had expected a professional craftsmanship. I worked through multiple rounds of unpleasant interactions. While the chair corners were being redone, and I suggested we need to settle up what i owed them, i was informed that they had already charged my card for the full amount (they had my card info from the initial deposit). Felt like an unethical surprise move. That should have been done with my consent. Bottom line and end result is 10 chairs that are acceptable, but not what i expected. read more

They came over to measure. I then went to them to pick out some fabrics. I was sent joke with some fabric books to be sure that it matched all of my decor. I have had two good experience with Sterling, including how they responded when something went wrong with a recent job. A few weeks ago, we got six stool cushions reupholstered there at about $70 each. (The original cushions were $90 each about 6 years ago, but that's another story). After just a few weeks in regular use, the new cushions were already blowing out at the seams. I took the two worst offenders back to Sterling, and the crew there was very apologetic. They immediately recognized that there was a problem, and took responsibility. We chatted for a few minutes about possible fixes, and I left. They completely replaced the cushions, and the two redone stools were a much better, cleaner looking result. We just got the other four completed. I wasn't charged anything for the fix. You could say that maybe they should have done the cushions this way the first time, but that's not always how it goes. Sometimes you have to get it wrong before you get it right, and when you're doing one-off custom fixes, that's life. Sterling was very professional and straight-up with me the whole time, and I feel assured that if i don't get great results, they'll make it right. As for price: I wouldn't take a cheap piece of furniture there to get redone, it probably wouldn't be worth it. But if you paid good money for some quality furniture and are willing to invest a little more to give it a second life, this is a good place to check out. read more

David has been in charge of our upholstery for many years. His taste is impeccable. Sterling has upholstered all of my couches and antique chairs. David has a great eye for something interesting and most important: comfortable. He will steer me away from something, just because he knows I will get tired of it and regret it or because it won't be right for the piece. That said, he knows what will make a fantastic and unusual piece of furniture. There is a unique and eclectic selection of fabrics. Since the selection is huge, take some time to look at everything. If it's something you are going to look at everyday, find a fabric you really love and feels wonderful to touch. The work is always perfect. Yesterday I collected a favorite chair that spent years in my office and then garage. The old brocade was dull, very beige and really worn out. David showed me some brocades that were similar and but were very boring and scratchy. He pulled out the most luscious and soft fabric. I fell in love with it. While he had the chair upholstered, he had the wood restored and put in all new padding. When they brought it out, I was stunned! This chair has never looked so elegant and perfect. Also, Covid safe. We had an inherited couch too good to get rid of, but cushions were like bricks of hard old down. Sterling restuffed 4 seat/back cushions, plus two smaller end ones. Have to say, quite expensive, but if you have a good piece of furniture, it's definitely worth it. I did have to go over several times exactly what I wanted, but turned out very well. But after an untold number of holiday dinners and other get togethers, the fabric had deteriorated. We turned to Sterling to replace it. Michelle Curyea, the manager, was great. She dug through her inventory to suggest fabrics and was helpful, cheerful and patient throughout the process, as we searched through catalogues and samples both at her shop and elsewhere. The guy who spoke to me wanted to answer my questions even before I finished asking them.
