Absolutely blown away by the quality of work from Upholstery Specialists. I had a very sentimental piece of furniture - a sectional that was my first "adult" furniture that my dad and step mom had bought for me. It has been the best sofa ever - absolutely perfect size and has fit in two different homes. Well, it started to lose its comfort and was broken, fabric was worn down, when you sat down you could feel the springs/edges of the frame - but it was like my wubby, I could not stand the thought of scrapping it. I started researching all the options. Reality - there is no sofa on the market with same exact dimensions. So next up, reupholstery it was! I had first reached out to Paul maybe 6 months ago wanting to understand pricing! He asked for some pics, my measurements and offered rough estimate. Amazing, he did that within a day or two of me reaching out. Then I went radio silent - we had another home project that took all the time/funds. Fast forward to April - I reached out one more time and Paul picked up right where we left off. Said come on down to the shop where they have thousands of samples! You get to touch/feel/bring samples home, but my son zeroed in on our winning fabric pretty quickly! And its actually a more durable fabric than we had before. Fast forward to the process itself - Paul comes over to do his own measurements and see the space. This is when I was provided the real real quote as he had the exact measurements. Let's be honest, I missed a thing or two. Paul then came on a Thursday to pick it up, 2 Thursdays later it was back, better than ever! The cushions are now full and oh so comfortable. The base of the sofa has been repaired, reinforced and is ready for another 10 years of wear and tear! I am so beyond grateful for this journey with Paul and his team. I might have spent a bit more money, but not much when you think about other costs - getting rid of a couch, shipping, white glove delivery. So it probably works out to about the same, but there really is no price on a sentimental piece that has so many memories and now has new ones as my son got to be a part of the process! I had just bought a pair of chairs I wanted to get just the seats reupholstered to a non-fabric material so that I can just wipe to clean them. Out of all the places I got responses from on an estimate here on yelp, this place gave me the most precise answer based on an actual estimate of range in costs based on how much work would be done, how much of the material I would need, what type of material would be used, etc. so I decided to go with them. And the response time is reasonably prompt as was the price tag. When I was given the suggestion of buying some extra material for future repairs of the chairs I got reupholstered or the potential addition of another pair of the same chairs I was thinking about getting later down the road, it was a great idea so I did that too. I also loved that rather than being pressured to make the decision on the spot, I was provided with about 5 different samples of the different potential choices to take home with me to think about it and really see how it would look on the chair/in the room. read more

Stop looking at other shops and just come here. Paul will wow you with his work! We've got a 9ft sofa that is from the 50's/60's that is probably my prized possession. We've had it for a decade, and it was completely deteriorating. I was so nervous to have just anyone reupholster it because I loved the original quilting, but Paul and his team did an AMAZING job. They also reupholstered the cushions of a rocking chair for us. If you notice in the before picture, the old cushions weren't the right size. I didn't even notice, but Paul spotted it right away. He also restored the wood on the rocking chair, and it looks stunning!! But what is really unbelievable is that the frame of the chair broke at some point, and someone put a long screw with a bolt through it. You might be able to see it in the picture under the seat cushion. Paul was able to fix that too. No more ugly bolts sticking out, and you would never have known that they were ever there. Unbelievable. Paul was so helpful and knowledgeable about what fabrics would be best around my two small kids. And he was incredibly responsive during the entire process. What a terrific business! It is so hard to find a place that can help restore a vintage sofa. After the moving company I hired damaged my 1960s Danish Modern sofa, I flipped out. Thank fully I found Upholstery Specialists and they are now open, after lockdown. Covid was already stressful, moving, and finding my sofa broken was too much. These guys are great! I took a set of 8 antique (and family heirloom) dining chairs to Upholstery Specialists to be repaired. The chairs are hand-tied springs so unfortunately they had to be completely re-done and not just "repaired". But Paul was really upfront about this and explained how it's done. Because I had to redo things, I had to choose a new seat fabric. Paul knew just the right kinds of fabric to make them look good and in keeping with the antique style. They picked up the chairs from the house in their clean, carpeted van, and delivered them again once they were finished. The chairs look fantastic! I won't lie; redoing 8 chairs is not cheap, but the workmanship is top notch and they stand by their work. I'm thrilled with the results.Now I need to keep my kid from bouncing on the chairs or the next re-do is coming out of his allowance! :-) read more

I have a wonderful black and white photo of my grandparents in the 50's piles up together and looking so happy on this chair. When I was little, it was tangerine 60's orange. My mom had it reupholstered when I was a young adult, but then let her cat get at it. I decided to splurge and have this reupholstered to become my nursing chair. Paul helped me find a fabric that is the most durable/washable/stain-resistant option available and I found it with a bird print to represent my mom's spirit. Excellent upholstery work done by caring father/son team. We bought new Ethan Allen chairs and had them drop-shipped to them. They did the new seat covers beautifully. Then the saga really began. The manufacturer had used an overly long screw inside one of the seats, with the pointy end just about 1/2 inch below the sitting surface. The new seat covers were put on without removing the seat, so the Upholstery Specialists didn't notice the potentially damaging screw. I of course thought they had removed the seat to cover it and that they had mistakenly inserted a long screw, tip up. They told me, no, they hadn't even removed the seat and never noticed the protruding screw. Nevertheless, they took the chair back and promptly removed the offending screw, putting in a correct one, and recovering the bottom of the chair seat with the simple dark gray fabric used for the underside. They took great care of me and the chairs, and didn't charge anything extra for the Ethan Allen screw up. BRAVO! Honest, quick, inexpensive, friendly, talented, helpful, customer-oriented. read more

Father and son team George and Paul were fantastic they kept us informed all the way through the process. Since the pieces of furniture have been in my family since the late 1800s I had them take pictures of the entire process. We had them start with a couch and two chairs when they dropped off the completed projects we were so happy with the completed projects. We sent back them back to the shop with another chair and ottoman to recover. I can't wait to see the ottoman when it returns, it will now be covered in a hair on hide. To begin with, I was greeted in the office with a big smile from George who led me to the showroom filled with fabrics to choose from, and then took his time answering every single question I had. When Paul came to give me an estimate on my couch that I was getting reupholstered, you could tell he knew what he was talking about, and was very knowledgeable about the piece I had, and how/what needed to happen to make it the way I visioned. Paul and George are fantastic to work with: professional, friendly, responsive, and genuinely nice people. The workmanship and attention to detail is top notch. They are easy to reach and came through with my requested timeline. Beyond all of that, here is the reason I wish I could give them 10 stars: I initially sent an email to Paul, after finding them on Yelp, showing a picture of the king size headboard and footboard that needed to be recovered and asking for a rough estimate of what it would cost. He gave me a range (depending on choice of fabric) and I agreed to go forward with a formal bid. I visited their warehouse to go through their racks of fabric choices and make my selection. Next, Paul came out to my home to take exact measurements and give me a written bid based on my chosen fabric. Upon inspecting the headboard, he realized that the piece was too large to fit in their delivery truck and they would be unable to transport it to their shop for the job. He said the work would have to be done in my home instead. I have lived in my home for nearly 15 years now. It is a large, high-end home. I can't tell you how many times over the years I have had contractors come to the home for repairs, carpet cleaning, etc., and when they see the home, they immediately find a reason to jack their prices up through the roof. So, when Paul told me that my furniture was too large for their normal process and they were going to have to do the work at my home, I braced myself for the usual over-inflated pricing others had tried to pull on me in the past. He wrote up the estimate and handed it to me. It was at the lowest end of the range he had originally given me in my first email to him!!! My husband took one look at the chairs and suggested I take them to the dump. Paul replaced the foam seat, re-glued the frame, painted all the brackets, installed all new hardware and delivered them to my house! I got them back today; and I was speechless. I compared a few furniture upholstery shops in San Jose before deciding to try these folks. I'm so glad we did! I was impressed with the helpfull front office customer service that George (the father) provided. He was courteous, knowledgeable and made the process easy and fast. I set up a meeting with Paul (the son and owner) for a brainstorming session to design my outdoor cushions. They were for vintage pieces of furniture which I had just dropped off to another source for powder coating. Paul and I could only work off the 50 year old original cushions I brought in. Paul used his years of expertise to steer me into the best solution that would not only work, but gave me an option to reverse every piece and thereby doubling their life expectancy. I wanted to purchase my fabric on line to get it for less than retail. He explained that the manufacturer won't warranty those purchases and dye lots can be slightly off if remnants were purchased from various dye lots. In an effort to keep my costs as low as I had expected them to be, he lowered his price of the same fabric! He ordered it directly from the manufacturer and all from the same dye lot with full warranty. The over the top service kicked in once again when I asked if he could please finish my job in time for my husband's birthday parties. That gave him an extremely short window to work in. He made no promises but said he'd do all he could to make it happen. He immediately ordered the fabric and foam so it would be ready when the powder coating was done. He offered to pick up my pieces from powder coating and keep them in shop so each piece would fit exactly right. They intended to make the cushions on the frames themselves, best way for a perfect fit. The job was finished in time for the parties and delivered (no charge for delivery) to my home 2 days beforehand!!! They carried all the pieces of furniture with cushions to my backyard and set everything up for me.The cushions Upholstery Specialists made are better than the original ever were. Bonus round - Paul personally helped to deliver my items and showed me how to care and prolong the life of my Sunbrella cushions too. With proper care they can last for many years to come! Wow, I"m really, really surprised by the other (negative) review here for Upholstery Specialists. I've used them six or seven times over the past couple of years, due to my habit of picking up old furniture on Craigslist or --I must admit-- on the side of the road. Every time I've found them both to be really personable and ended up with great results. I've definitely come in with some weird vintage/antique pieces (enormous tufted king chair, now resplendent in my living room in double-piped red velvet, a slipper chair, once grubby gray but now coral and ivory paisley, two sagging ottomans I found on CL) and they've never batted an eye. Once Paul (the son) comes out to measure, they give you an itemized quote -- the only variance is in the yardage price of the material you select. Workmanship is very sharp -- they fixed up a slipper chair with a button-tufted back last year, and the paisley on the buttons is perfectly patter-matched with the chair back, the pleats on the tufting are very clean, the piping is tight with no gaping or wrinkles, etc. And I am crazy picky about this stuff... These guys do a great job, they're fast, and they have an enormous selection of fabrics and leathers -- definitely give them a shot. read more
