We are big fans of Arts & Crafts furniture, so imagine our delight when we recently chanced upon a great find at a local thrift store: four Arts & Crafts dining room chairs that were almost a perfect match for the four we already had -- at price of about $50 for all four. A great deal, except that the cushions were uncomfortable and the coverings were a cheap-looking red fabric that we really hated. We had refurbished our original Arts & Crafts chairs ourselves some years ago, refinishing the wood and replacing and reupholstering the cushions. We did a pretty good job, too. But that was then. Since that time, the wonderful Foam store in downtown Palo Alto has closed and we had no idea how we'd find the right foam for the cushions without seeing it and feeling it for ourselves. We are also 25 years older than when we did the first four, and much less patient. My husband started with one chair with foam purchased at Michael's but it was all wrong. The foam was too swishy and the newer chairs were a little trickier to recover. We looked into hiring a pro to redo the chair cushions and found Dan's. They were amazing. Beyond amazing. They whole job was done in two days. We took the cushions and the fabric into the shop on Tuesday. By Thursday, all eight chairs (the four new and the four old) were done and looking great. Not only was Dan's super-fast, but they came out and installed the new cushions to make sure they all fit. I bet you think that sounds expensive, but the price was great, especially for the speedy service and home delivery. We had envisioned a long and difficult project of re-doing the chairs ourselves, but instead we are now done with new chair cushions ready for guests we're expecting next week. I had a lousy experience with Dyan, a designer/salesperson at Dan's. After making an appointment to look at fabric samples in their showroom, we were disappointed because we didn't find any appropriate fabrics (end use: upholstery) in the colors of my daughter's room. The man who was on site that day was nice but not helpful. In emailing Dyan later, I wrote that perhaps we should have come when she was there, because she might know the memo books better, and could point us in the right direction to find an upholstery fabric in a lavender or lilac color. Her response was that "Lavender and lilac are not popular in today's fabric industry, but we do have a selection of white upholstery fabrics." First of all, she's wrong. Mills and fabric houses offer plenty of options in lavender, lilac, and other shades of light purple. Just look at Kravet's, Robert Allen's, or any other to-the-trade website. I worked in that industry for 20 years. Second, that wasn't what I asked. I asked for her help, and I was told the color I was seeking wasn't popular and I could try a white fabric. (Of course you have white fabric!) This was not helpful, and to be told that what I was looking for is not popular is borderline rude. Her response put me off so much that I've delayed the project for a year. I'm now beginning the process with another upholstery shop and am reminded of my negative experience with Dyan at Dan's. Maybe if you get a better salesperson, you'll have a better experience. But I'll never recommend Dan's. read more

My four classic mid-century teak dining room chairs were WAY past due to get reupholstered -- fabric was totally falling apart -- so I reached out to at least a half-dozen Yelp! companies for estimates. Brian at Dan's gave me a much lower price than the competition, including the [unnamed here] local company who did the job some decades ago and had clearly really skimped on the foam padding. Dan's staff delivered them just now and they look absolutely fantastic -- so much so that I decided to splurge by letting them take my other four teak dining room chairs (not quite as nice a style, but fabric quite worn and stained) for reupholstery with the same fabric. So now I will have 8 nearly-matching teak chairs around my teak table! Their selection of fabric was super, and they include scotch-guarding in the price. They are efficient, friendly and professional' Our chair was beat up! Bought and put outside as a reading chair, but the fabric didn't agree with the elements. It was places in a covered spot, but between the sun and wind and rain it had seen better days. We went over fabrics, I was shown what fabrics worked best for the location of the chair, and we found a similar fabric to the one that originally came on it. It's absolutely beautiful!! My beautifully upholstered sofa & chair were just delivered today. I wanted a fabric that was very similar to what was originally on the furniture, & Brian was extremely helpful in showing me quite a few options. I had complained that the original fabric pilled much too much, & Brian offered quite a selection of "performance fabrics", which didn't pill & were also easy to clean. It took me some time to decide on a fabric, but once I did, it only took Dan's a week to get the job completed & delivered. The work is outstanding, & the sofa & chair look like they're new. The access to my living quarters was quite challenging, but the deliverers, who were also the upholsterers, managed to bring the furniture up a narrow set of stairs. They even took off the wood base on the sofa & reattached it once inside the house, so they could avoid any damage to the fabric. I couldn't be more delighted with the whole experience. I've just returned from Dan's upholstery. I had a cushion cover that I wanted to wash. When I remove the cover the inside casing had disintegrated so all of the stuffing came unraveled. When we try to put it back in it was so lumpy and misshapen. I called Dan's this morning and Cynthia answered. She was very helpful and advised me to take photographs of the stuffing and the cushion so they could better advise me. I submitted the information via email and Brian got back to me promptly. I explained that I am babysitting and would only have a short window to bring the cushion down. He said to bring it on down and they would be able to re-stuff it for me. As soon as the baby woke up I jumped in the car and drove over to Dan's. Sure enough as I arrived, Brian was just parking too. I brought the lumpy cushion and one we had not tampered with. He quickly assessed the problem, took both cushions in the back and voila! Like magic, it was fixed. I think it's usually drop off and pick up when done, but he took pity on me with the baby buggy blocking his entrance. Seriously, everyone was so nice, professional and accommodating ! If I could give 10 stars, I would. I needed a few lumbar pillows for our living room. The final product was so beautiful (and cost effective) that I asked if they could create a cushion for an antique English Monk's Chair (the chair converts from a chair to a table). It's a lovely and unique old chair... but extremely hard on the derriere. Diane looked at the photos and said, of course we can. I attached photos because i can't even express how brilliant the workmanship was on this cushion. It wasn't your standard square or rectangular cushion. I was stunned when I saw it and even more pleased when I put the perfectly sized cushion on the chair. Again, if I could give 10 stars, I would. This is a business I will work with again and they have my strongest recommendation if you want to work with talented artists who are proud of their quality work. read more

Normally Dan's does not reupholster recliners, but after receiving pictures from us, they said they could do it.
