My husband made reservations here for our 27th anniversary. He doesn't usually do the planning of things like this so I was very open minded and appreciated his thoughtfulness to his many surprises during our mini getaway. He went inside as I waited in the car to check us in. When he came out to get me my first thought was okay this is different. Sterling Hotel by Wedgewood Events is a charming escape right in the center of Downtown Sacramento's action. The magnificent dome, stained-glass entry, and historically unique hotel is pretty well kept for its age. My favorite part of the room was the tub. The bed was comfortable and quiet, yay!! Huge and although the view from the window wasn't great I could see my car. Downtown Sac is known for its night life which we don't care for but it's not the safest place either. Parking was in the street and it's not free from 8am-10pm. There is a nearby garage but it's cheaper to park on the street. The short time I was there I didn't see any workers. But the note in our room did give us instructions if we needed further assistance. We aren't needy and don't like to be bothered so it was fine, just different. Breakfast were just to go bars and snacks, water bottles, and juices. But all in all clean hotel and quiet which makes me very happy. read more

The room/staying quarters itself, I would rate 3.5/5. Airbnb style isn't ideal if you need after hour assistance or have a concern. The hotel was lovely and quaint. I liked that the rooms were all a little different -- some, more modern than others. I personally would NOT stay here again simply for the fact that the hotel operates Airbnb style and you can't get in touch with an actual person after a certain time and there is no one on premises. My key card stopped working altogether so I called the emergency number only to be sent to voicemail three times and sent a text saying, "Hello how may i help you". The text was sent just like that. THANKFULLY, my brother had my spare and we were a large group staying on property for the wedding. Otherwise, I would have been a woman locked outside my room with no assistance after midnight. Beautiful ballroom and event space but certainly needs fine tuning on the "no staff available after 4:30p" CRAP. One of our guests had to call the police because they heard someone trying to force entry onto the premises around 1am Thursday night/Friday morning. Absolutely Horrible Experience - Avoid at All Costs I would give negative stars if I could. This place is absolutely disgusting. When I walked into the room, there was throw up splattered on the wall -- clearly no real cleaning had been done. The jacuzzi tub was completely unusable: full of cracks, rusted over, and barely functioning. The TV didn't work at all, which made things even worse. There's no staff on site -- if you have an issue, you're supposed to text a number. I texted immediately, even sent pictures of the mess, and no one ever got back to me. Zero customer service. And for the outrageous price (over $200 a night!), there's no parking available on site. You either have to drive around searching for street parking and keep feeding the meters, or park two blocks away in a public parking garage and walk back to the hotel. This place feels like an overpriced, run-down motel. Definitely not worth it. Extremely disappointing and honestly one of the worst hotel experiences I've ever had. I will never stay here again and I absolutely do not recommend it to anyone. read more

Very odd experience...we reserved four rooms for a conference. Whereas the rooms are nicely decorated it went down hill from there. As there is not staff on site you have to text a number. I texted the number as the TV was not working. They said that the TV in my room was not working and they were getting it repaired. The odd part is that they would not have known which room I was in which makes me think that none of them were working. The DirecTV did not work at all and the VizioFree TV work work for about a minute and then go out over and over again. The same thing happened with the Internet. The hotel Internet did not work so they gave me the Wedgewood Wedding Internet. It went in and out over and over again. Not a positive experience when you are working. The second morning I went to get in the shower and it was ice cold. I texted about it and they said it takes 15 minutes to warm up. So I waited and it did warm up but definitely something that should be shared upon arrival. You use your room key to get in the hotel. But multiple times upon entering the hotel (even after hours) the front door was propped open meaning anyone could be entering the building. On the second night the hotel smelled like there was a fire. When I brought it to the attention of the staff, they responded that they were fixing the air conditioning. And tonight (a Thursday night) at 9:15 PM, I am in my room listening to the DJ at the wedding in their facility downstairs. Not sure when the wedding reception will be over but there will not be any sleeping until it is. read more

This is not a review for Wedgewood weddings! It's so sad because the bones to this place are so good and it has so much potential. To start, I think their new "moving to an Airbnb style" is a cop out and it's lazy. It's not an Airbnb, it's a hotel. It's inconsistent when staff is available and when they're not. We rented the Huntington Suite for 2 nights so I could get ready for my wedding there. Inside the mini fridge had not been cleaned and the floors were sticky in the bathroom. There's also a lot of things broken and not taken care. The toilet tank cover was cracked and ducted taped. The sink was cracked. In the hallways, just random things are cracked. I think the only reason this place is open is because they have Wedgewood attached and people stay for weddings. Which is so sad because the place is darling but just so run down. read more

I used to love the Sterling Hotel--it was a beautiful, well-kept Victorian boutique stay that felt worth the downtown Sacramento parking hassle. Sadly, those days are gone. The hotel now calls itself "Airbnb-style," which seems to mean zero upkeep. Our room had crusty, leaking sink fixtures, an old, tiny toilet, a cracked and questionable tub, dusty fake plants, fuzzy ventilation grates, and a moldy pod in the coffee maker--with no cups in sight. The ice bucket was half-full of old water, and no liner bags were provided. The once-romantic rooms with featherbeds and antique four-posters have been swapped for stiff, boring mattresses and bland décor. The elegant sitting room off the lobby is now walled off, only available for rentals. The lobby itself feels more like a generic motel. There's no help with expensive garage parking, and no front desk on weekends--peak booking times. Their contactless check-in process required downloading two apps, which failed when I tried to access our room. I got an error and was told to "see reception"... which was closed. Text support was vague and impersonal, and I felt like I was the inconvenience for arriving at 6:30pm on a Friday. This was such a letdown compared to the warm, memorable stays I've had here in years past. The current experience is overpriced, impersonal, and poorly maintained. Great find! Room was small but cozy with a very comfy bed and big windows to let in lots of light, the bathroom had a huge jetted tub and thermostat and TV worked well and was easy to use. Some people are complaining about the keyless entry but I thought it was awesome! Just being able to go right to your room without a long line and a lengthy check in process? Yes please! They also provide free snacks in the lobby which was nice late at night. Only downside about this place is the parking, but, because it is downtown parking anywhere is hard. I parked in a garage nearby but there is no free parking, thankfully you're in walking distance of a ton of things to do so you won't need to move your car again! read more

Wow! I have to start by highlighting the incredible hospitality at the Sterling Hotel. The staff were so diligent and attentive--Scout, Abby, and PK the bartender were especially friendly. Being pregnant, I truly appreciated how Scout went above and beyond to assist me. The Chef's passion for his craft really shines through--the food was outstanding. His au jus and horseradish sauce were absolutely spectacular. I wish I could come back to dine for the prime ribs! I'm so sorry to say this but I wished I didn't stay at this hotel with my elderly parents...stairs to get inside only access. Worst thing... I don't know how the key card seems to open other people's room. I only know coz we had 2 rooms and all keys work on both rooms. We tried to switch them and it still worked.....second night someone was able to unlock our room and good thing we had the chains. Really scary!!!! I check out early.... And with all the inconvenience I found out I was already charged instead of just a funding hold for all the 3 night. I was promised that...that Wouldn't happen!!!!!' I want to start off with the wedding venue is great but the hotel is awful. No one at the front desk . Rooms smell like human piss . Furniture is a mash of old hotel furniture that was bought randomly. Cheap linens and pillows. The worst is pubic hairs in bathroom . Moldy shower and bathroom fixtures that are falling apart . Avoid! Filthy rooms. I found a half-full pack of cigarettes just under the bed. There is no one at the front desk on the weekend and weekday evenings. It's run-down establishment. I could not leave my luggage in the lobby, which is customary for any normal hotel. I contacted customer service. They assured me I would hear back from the hotel soon. No one ever called me back. I've been in the service industry for almost 20 years and was shocked at the state of a Hotel where I payed around $400 for a room for my wife's Birthday. Issues: -Dirty glasses with lipstick stains around the hotel floors for the 1.5 days we were there. -no hand soap in the room (I also requested this item and was told no) so when you have to use the restroom you have to go get shower gel from the shower. - one shower head not working at all and the other wouldn't even have been good enough to have a beach shower to get sand off of you - our door handle was barely hanging on and felt as if someone could just break it and come in at any time. I requested maintenance and was told there was no one to do such maintenance - the coffee pot in the room had old chunks of who knows what, coffee, and maybe but not certainly mold which I cleaned out and just couldn't justify using. - two day old dried out donuts and gross very cheap pastries and coffee we had to make ourselves for a quick morning snack -the carpet all around but specifically in the elevator was very dirty and smelly -the front desk was pleasant enough but just wasn't trained it seemed at all in actual skilled customer service - not able to request towels until later in the morning when we were getting ready to leave as there was a very late response due to no staff being around It was honestly my second worst experience I've had. Only one time was I this appalled and that was a $75 super 8 room in a crappy area where you expect a bit of a poor experience. I tried reaching out to management with my issues and no response. HORRIBLE AND SCARY EXPERIENCE! So unsafe; especially for women. We got locked out of the hotel lobby AND our hotel room for hours! Random strangers can access the lock boxes on the porch and get your room key. We arrived at 6:30 pm after a flight delay only to find that the lobby door was locked. No employees are available after 4:30 pm which is RIDICULOUS. I called the number and was able to eventually access the lock box. We entered our room, put down our things and went out to dinner. BIG MISTAKE! We returned after a short while, and our key wouldn't open the lobby door. Other guests were stuck outside as well. Eventually, a guest opened the front door from the inside for us. We went up and were horrified to find out that our key couldn't open our hotel room door. Other guests were complaining about the same thing. One poor man had surgery the next day and his required medications were locked away. It took about 2 hours to get back into our room. We had to wait on the floor of the hallway, exhausted after a long day of travel, for an employee to come and unlock our door. It gets better! A woman, who was supposed to be a guest in a room on the same floor, told us that she had walked into her hotel room only to find A NAKED STRANGER in her room! Apparently someone broke into the lock box outside and took one of the keys and let themselves in to her room. SO FRIGHTENING to be a woman traveling alone and find someone in your room. I understand that mistakes happen but there is so much negligence and little regard for the safety and comfort of hotel guests. No one reached out to apologize nor did they offer to give us a discount or make this right. AVOID this hotel at all costs if you care about safety! read more

AVOID THIS HOTEL! This was hands down the worst hotel experience I've had in my life and I travel for business regularly! The front desk is only open from 800a to 430p, so I called to confirm my reservation several days beforehand. I also confirmed that there would be no issue with me checking in after the front desk closed. I was assured that I would have no issue on the night of my arrival. When I arrived on the night of my reservation, I found my room dirty. The bed had been slept in and was unmade. There were old food containers scattered all over the room, there was food and trash in the trash cans and a dirty bathroom with dirty towels on the floor. It was obvious that the room had not been cleaned from the last occupant. This being 12 AM in the morning I was stuck with no room and no front desk help or anyone to make it right. I called their afterhours answering service three times and the lady who answered each time told me that she could not get anyone to answer any of the emergency phone contacts. I had to leave and travel across town and check into another hotel at twice the price because I was a walk in. Worst of all to this day no one from management has ever called me to apologize for my horrible experience or to offer in any way to make it right. Moreover, they still charged my company for the full stay, which was two additional nights! It is businesses like this one that give small businesses a bad name and allow the corporate giants to come in and monopolize an industry! We stayed here for our 16th wedding anniversary; just for a little one-night getaway. We booked through Expedia, paying $160.84. The pictures are pretty good at depicting the cuteness and charm ... HOWEVER: * There were cracks in our huge jacuzzi tub, rendering it unusable. No way was I going to try to soak in that using those jets. (Room 203) * There was good water pressure; HOWEVER, the hot water never got hot! Seriously! We let the hot water run a little longer, never even turned on the cold water, and our showers were still lukewarm. No thanks. * The pillows and blankets were decent; HOWEVER, our bed was a little saggy. It wasn't horrible and we probably would have gotten a good night's sleep; HOWEVER ... * Every time our heater kicked on throughout the night, we heard a rattling in the vent! I can't even count how many times I woke up thanks to that annoying rattle. * See in the check-in paperwork how it says, "The Sterling Hotel parking voucher is only for the Memorial Parking Garage ... for a fee of $16 of one-time use which covers a 24-hour period." Then it says, "The Sterling Hotel does not offer free parking validations or vouchers at any parking destinations at this time." When we checked in, we both remember being told about the $16 parking voucher. When we checked out, we were told they do not give out vouchers, at all. When I questioned their paperwork, we were told, "Yeah, I know, it's false ... The general manager does not like to change paperwork." (Yes, quote, unquote). We paid $17.50 at the garage. We never asked for any free parking, just to save $1.50. Not a huge savings, but it's still the principle of what they have advertised versus what was actually offered. Hm ... * The Continental Breakfast was exactly that, consisting of oatmeal, English muffins, bagels, fruit, coffee, tea, and juice. Nothing extravagant. Very simple. * We didn't really have to interact with any of the staff, but those we did see in passing were very friendly. * Location: Not too bad; centrally located to a lot of restaurants,boutiques, and bars. This review is just for the ballroom facilities that my professional association rented for a special awards dinner. This was my first time in the old Sterling/Chanterelle building since it changed hands years ago. The main dining/ballroom is quite beautiful and is a ~great~ place for a large group dinner event in the downtown area. High ceilings and a very spacious space for an elegant dinner or other celebration...the Sterling is a place to consider if you're looking for someplace to hold a large reception. For those who don't want to deal with the tribulations of finding downtown parking, the light rail station at 12th and H is only one block away. read more

This hotel has really gone into disrepair. I was there for a business trip and stayed on the 3rd floor. I was not able to access the internet and work from my room. When I called the front desk, they told me to go down to the lobby or second floor. Obviously, they were aware of the problem before hand. This place was okay, but I had a few main concerns: 1) Parking was pretty bad. They offer validated parking elsewhere, but they put the sign for such inside so we had already found parking by the time we got there. I know parking is hard in Sac, but at least make it easy for people to know their options. 2) There were only two restroom, each had only one stall and a urinal (plus a baby urinal too small to use). One was out of order, so for a group on 100+ people it was VERY inconvenient to use the restroom. Thank goodness no one got sick or anything. 3) Very small dance floor. Couldn't hold all the people that wanted to dance, and people would stop dancing as they were pushed out of the little square. Overall it was a lovely even, and the food was good. This is a review only for the hotel, not the wedding venue and services. Frankly, I expected more for my money. This is a nice 2-star hotel trying to pass for a 3+ star boutique. Decent but not worth $300 a night. First, the pros: this place is very charming with lots of antique touches that make for a unique place to stay. However, my favorite part was a not so antique piece: the enormous jetted tub in our room. The staff were also very friendly. The cons: The parking structure is a city block away, so you can park and walk or try street parking. We found a spot on the street, but it was right under a tree that covered our car with sap and green fuzzies overnight. The area around the hotel isn't very nice, which is another reason you may want to reduce your walking time to/from your vehicle. The view from our room was a dirty alleyway full of trash, and the streets had the true downtown smell of a dumpster full of piss. Inside the hotel room, the antique vibe also meant that a lot of the furnishings were older and worse for wear. read more

Came here for a wedding/reception, my wife was part of the wedding party so we got a room.. First let me start off with the wedding "area"::: It was small, very small... there was 26 guests, a photographer a DJ and the wedding party, and it was a very tight fit.. the floor was under construction so tile was ripped off and it was stripped to bare floor, I think if your paying 10k for a venue it shouldn't have stripped flooring. We all where shuffled downstairs to a bar or a cellar for drinks and games while the wedding party went for photos and that wasn't bad, the AC worked very well and the bartender was amazing, her effort really made the experience better. Moving into the banquet hall, I was quiet surprised with the size of the hall... it seemed like it would accommodate way more than the wedding "hall" so that was interesting.. So let's talk about the good, like I said before the size of the hall was good and the decor was nice, all of the servers and bartenders were extremely friendly and helpful. The food was a selection of prime rib, chicken(looked frozen) and salmon.. the food was typical buffet wedding food.. middle of the road here.. Now to the bad. The DJ, wow talk about a jerk, rather than be able to go talk to him and request songs he wanted you to text him, he played 1 song that was requested the rest was a mix he "" normally"" plays at weddings, rather than interact and get the crowd moving he made a plate of food sat at his booth and let his playlist play. I just felt this was kinda lame for the amount they paid the guy Now for the hotel, the bed was horrid, it felt like springs on a piece of plywood, the fan in the bathroom didn't work and we only had 1 mini bottle of shampoo for two people staying 1 night. Some of the negative reviews aren't fair because they are trying to compare it to a regular hotel. I travel frequently for work so I decided to do something unique for my staycation. Sterling Hotel is a historic, renovated mansion turned hotel. It carries some of the historic value of a hotel along with some of the amenities you will find in a regular hotel. So yes, you will find dated crown molding, mismatched drapes, random pieces of art but you will find interesting historical pieces like the room 202 (the Butler's former room). My room was clean and the staff was attentive to my needs. Parking was easy. The only suggestion I would make is that they improve their breakfast options. read more

This is the place I stayed during my wine tasting weekend. I'd wanted to go to the Sterling for a while, having heard good things about it from co-workers, but fate conspired against me repeatedly. The last time I reserved a room there, they had a computer glitch and needed to rebook me elsewhere. They did so, but the new hotel (Embassy Suites) was further away from my office and about $100 more a night. I was pretty unhappy and called the Sterling to express that sentiment. Melanie Dressler took my call and asked what she could do to make it right. I told her I'd let her decide and she ended up sending me a complimentary two-night stay in any room at either property (the Sterling or the Vizcaya.) It definitely made up for the inconvenience. I chose to stay here because I'd already been to the Vizcaya. I was much more impressed with the Sterling. The hotel itself is stunning. I love Victorian architecture, so this was perfect for me. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating; I asked for a fan, because I like to be a pain in the ass everywhere I go, and they found one for me and brought it up. My room had a jacuzzi tub, which I needed, seeing as how I was suffering from pneumonia during my stay. A hot bath did me good, at least until the next day, when I drank wine non-stop and nearly died. The bed was comfortable, though I wish the A/C worked better. It could have been that I was feverish; the fan did help a lot. I'll agree with Daphne B. that it's not really designed with the business traveler in mind. Still, I'd definitely stay there while I'm up in Sacramento for work, just because it's a lovely change of pace from the usual places I stay and just as close to the Capitol. read more

If you are a light sleeper this is not the hotel for you you'll be woken up by loud creaking above you if you are not on the top floor. Also at least in my room the shower head had a lot of calcium and rust deposit built up in it. So showering wasn't the most pleasant thing. Also me and my girlfriend realized that the bottom of the bathtub looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a month or so. Cleanliness wasn't the best but comfort was great! Minus the old floors and the creaking. Also when ever I would turn the heater on it would make this knocking sound that would last for hours and eventually wake me up hours later. Last thing is when I went to ask if they have a garage where I can park my car they seemed to butt around the question and just told me to park on the street and you won't get a ticket. So I parked on the street after they said there was free parking on sunday but I ended up getting a ticket anyways. Nice quaint place in downtown sacramento, where you are close to everything. If you don't care about any of the stuff I mentioned then sure it's a great place but if I was asked to ever go back I wouldnt. read more

I got married at this hotel a year ago which means a lot of my family and friends booked rooms there as well. For my husband and I anniversary we decided to go stay there again as we were not really able to enjoy our room with the great events taking place last year. I booked the Junior Suite as the main suite was booked. Once I arrived I was told the thermostat was broken and they had to change my room which in up being the Hopkins Suite. The Hopkins Suite is just there basic king size bed room nothing special. The room was nice and simple. The bathroom could use some cleaning and updating. The bath stopper has mold on it so we decided not to take a bath together which was on of the highlights for the stay. The shower head is broke so the water pressure was painfully powerful. The junior suite does have different amenities in the bathroom that I clearly preferred as I purposely booked the room. When checking out I ask about the refund for the difference. I was told I had to email the owner of the hotel. I email the manger and waited a week and did not hear anything back. I called the hotel and the host I talk to told me now I have to go through Expedia since they are who I used to book it. At this point I'm frustrated because of the run around. I called Expedia and they help me take care of it but the rep at the hotel tell them the rooms cost the same price nightly. Even the Expedia rep did not agree to that but because the hotel rep said so they can not issue a refund. I checked on multiple websites for booking a room and there is at least a $20 difference. This place that was such a great memory holder for me now have lost my business forever. read more

Very big room. Interesting place. Very friendly, professional and helpful staff. I'd stay again, if the bedding/bed were updated. Not sure about the other rooms... but my room had really old pillows, mediocre sheets, and a mattress with springs that talk. The quilt and blankets were sad and completely unmatched with the cool carpet and updated bathroom. I wish whoever was in charge of decorating, would change the bedcover to match the room. Also, the way the bed is folded, isn't exactly the most conducive to avoiding whatever was left on the throw pillows and bedcover, by numerous previous occupants. read more

This place is wonderful! I found it by chance trying to throw together some last minuet New Year's plans with my boyfriend. From the outside it reminded me a little of The Haunted Mansion in Disneyland (but in a good way...lol). I was also fairly familiar with the surrounding areas. Up and down J Street is full of things to and see that are all well within walking distance. We ended up walking down to Old Town for New year's Eve with ease. The staff was incredibly nice and very helpful. There are a few options for parking: you can pay for valet ($12) or feed the meters (free after 6pm & on Sundays). We ended up opting to park on the street, passengers should be aware of the higher curbs. I was surprised to find the inside of the hotel was not as Victorian looking as I expected, which was welcomed. Our room was a single king size bed on the second floor and it had a very contemporary feel. Not to mention, the bed was VERY comfy. We ended up having a third guest join us and the guy working was able to have a full sized roll away bed delivered to our room while we were out that night for an additional feel of $15. Our guest reported that she was surprised by how comfy the roll away actually was. My favorite part was the very large and amazing jacuzzi tub! read more

This was a huge disappointment! Our reservation was for our family of 4 and our room didn't have enough pillows for each person and only 2 towels. We asked for ice water and we were directed to a vending machine. The breakfast was a joke with stale bagels and old coffee! Our room was clean but run down. The bathroom was missing pieces of molding, faucets leaking... the bathtub was peeling! This hotel looks like it should be full of hospitality but was not! This was our first time staying in Sacramento and we were completely disappointed! I've stayed in cheep hotels with better hospitality! read more

We had no expectations when we chose this hotel. We flew into this town because of Spartan Race and it was my first visit ever to the capital city of CA. The town was gorgeous and to choose this hotel in the middle of the city can be a little more exciting. It's a Victorian mansion looking hotel with some complicated entrances on the side. So many doors! The front desk lady was very professional and our room was right beside the main lobby but it was very quiet. The room was clean and the best part was the deep jacuzzi tub! My lavender Epsom salt was useful. They served breakfast pretty early in the morning and that worked for me even better. There were so many restaurants around and all walking-distance. read more

Update from my last review a weekend ago is I got a call last night from Jones the general manager apologising about the inconvenience last week and he would like to offer me 30% off the next visit. Four Stars 'For' now, only because I didn't get to stay here myself. My sister had a room here for her wedding (which was not at this venue) and she stayed in the Crocker Suite. The rooms weren't numbered but named, which is a cute idea for a small boutique hotel like this one. The crocker suite was beautiful and spacious. There was a mini fridge and a single cup coffee maker. The bathroom had a huge tub and the suite was kept clean. It was pretty eclectic in decor but it suits the timeline/theme of the venue. As we were a bridal party getting ready for the wedding, the 6 of us girls in one room has plenty of space to move around and mirror space to share. I went down to the front desk and the young man behind the counter was more than helpful and friendly in assisting me in getting extra coffee mugs and supplies for us girls to be wedding alert. Thank you! I would love to get the chance to stay here for a "staycation". It is a beautiful hotel! read more
