We loved it here! Beautiful grounds and the staff were very accommodating and sweet. Literally no complaints.

So thankful we found this little gem!! We stayed here for 7 days in early September during COVID. It's a wonderful central location between the destinations/activities we wanted to do in the area - indulging in local pubs, exploring trails/waterfalls/gorges, poking around Smuggler's Notch, Burlington, Stowe, Cambridge, etc. We had our own private cabin tucked away in the trees. The gas log stove is lovely, the private fire pit came in handy, and the cabin itself (studio) was perfect for the two of us and equipped with all the fundamentals we needed. Staff are super friendly and accommodating, price was excellent, amenities, locations, and features were exactly what we were looking for.

We just spent four glorious days at Sterling Ridge and are already planning our next visit. The cabins are clean and very well maintained, it fit our family of four very comfortably (we stayed in a two bedroom) and had all the amenities we needed. The staff were friendly and accommodating especially Max who always gave us a friendly hello! A general store and canoe and Kayak location were super close. While in the area we enjoyed Brewster River Grill for dinner and also traveled into Stowe for a few meals. If your a BEER lover The Alchemist is a quick 15 minute drive and a must visit.

I really love this place! We've stayed here twice now: July 2014: We stayed in a studio cabin; it was private and absolutely romantic. The bed was comfy and the grounds were perfect for walking and hiking. The pool was beautiful and perfect to lounge in. November 2014: We stayed in a one-room cabin with a jacuzzi and LOVED IT. Big, beautiful jacuzzi to soak in and a wood-burning stove to curl up in front of. The bed was incredibly comfortable. Loved walking/hiking along the trails. The staff is so sweet and friendly and I love Max and Rocky, the two dogs that run the place. We'd love to come back in the summer and rent the big cabins with friends! Perfect for a getaway; so private and romantic! Make sure to visit Boyden Valley Winery!!

Go and then keep going over and over. That's what I did!! It's all it says it is and more. Clean, hospitable lots to do... hiking, paddling, horse back riding, breweries and distilleries. I'm a summer person , don't ski or do anything snow related so clearly I go in July or August but I hear the skiing and snow stuff is awesome too! It's definitely something to check off your list

We vacation here every year for the last few years. The cabins are very clean and beautiful. The surroundings are wonderful and there is so much to do no matter the season. Kayak and canoe in the large pond or take a dip in the pool. Go for a hike in one of the many trails or take a drive and check out the covered bridges. The locals are welcoming and very friendly.

Just stayed there for the first time this weekend. It was after the kids went back to school but before the leaf peepers started so nice and quiet. Do recommend a all-wheel drive to get there and around the place but not required (at least in the non-snow season). Stayed in #20 - a one bedroom, non-dog unit. Looked like new construction, super clean and a soft bed. Had everything we needed - lots of towels, glasses, silver, plates and pots, even a few single use packs for the dishwasher included. Cable with a small flat screen in the bedroom, large flat in the living room with a DVD player. Beautiful grounds with two ponds and walking trails that connect to hiking trails for the area. Even saw some wild turkeys! We went when it was too cool for the pool and too warm for the hot tub. We did use the in-unit double Jacuzzi tub. Plenty of hot water and again, plenty of towels. We booked the two day morning escape package which came with enough coffee, pancake mix and real syrup that we didn't even have to go out for breakfast. And we got the two coffee mugs to take home. We went out and explored during the day and came back and cooked dinners at the cabin. For the same cost as an average room we got a fantastic value and a place all to ourselves.

I'm the one that makes that weird noise in the woods!

The cons..... our room was tiny! You could barely walk around the bed, and there was very little room for your 'stuff'. You better like the person you're rooming with because you're basically on top of each other... also, there was a loud noise coming from below the room during the nights... I think it was coming from the restaurant. Luckily, it didn't last too long though. The blonde girl who cleans the rooms (don't know if she's related or just staff) was rude to us about needing supplies for the room. We also heard her screaming in some sort of fight with someone in one of the rooms one afternoon. Who wants to hear that when you're spending money to stay somewhere??? She had a lousy attitude.... Most of our stay was good, but we were very claustrophobic in our room. If that's not an issue for you, it's a great little place.

We got a studio and loved that it came with a kitchen and fireplace and we had plenty of space. My only wish is that when I booked, someone had suggested we book ski school ahead for our 4yo, because it was flat booked out when we got there and we didn't even know what was offered or how to book (website isn't so easy to use). So we just took turns skiing / staying home when she wasn't up for it. Overall though it was a great vacation and we'll definitely come back (and book ski school ahead so we could enjoy more). I also appreciated how COVID-cautious they were, and even on school vacation week they were sold out but nothing was packed so we felt comfortable dining indoors, which tells me they didn't try to oversell just to make a buck and squish everyone in like sardines. Very much appreciated. I also appreciate that they had gluten free pizza and buns. The simple act of having gluten-free buns meant I got to dine out semi-normal with my family which was priceless. I had a burger, a breakfast sandwich, and they even made me a grilled cheese with tomato soup using the bun. It was awesome to enjoy a meal!

I'm really surprised this place has any 5 stars. Maybe for skiing location, but that's about it…read more The rooms are super old and falling apart (we had a 3 bedroom unit on Slopeside) while the layout was great, everything was old and in a major need of an upgrade. Showers, kitchen, decor, all really old and dingy. The pool is also way overdue for a makeover and far from most units so you need drive or walk a while, for us anyways. Fun zone, also old and dingy. Has incredibly dangerous railings on the second floor. It's an accident waiting to happen. One kid looks over too hard and will fall. I was a wreck next to it. Arcade needs a revamp and the staff barely pay attention to anyone there. It's a free for all. Okay so the main reason we came, to ski. Skiing was fine, tubing was fine too but the line gets long and you have to stop yourself or you're going through the nets. My biggest issue tho was with the lessons. We paid $2700 for 2 days of private lessons for 3 hours each day. I was personally told from 2 different people I spoke to on the phone our 4 kids would have 2 instructors. I was even told not to book my daughter alone for extra help because the two instructors would manage it. This made perfect sense to me and for the cost I was happy this is how it would go. Well, we arrived on day 1 and only 1 instructor (Beztie, she was nice and good with the kids, this wasn't her fault). I said something to her - the next day the manager spoke to me for about 1 min prior to the lesson and said she understands her team told me this, and a second coach would come for the last 2 hours. He did and worked with the kids. BUT this doesn't make up for the other 4 hours we paid top dollar for and didn't have both coaches. I wrote an email to the manager and still have not heard back. We should be refunded a portion of those 4 hours. I hope management returns my email as this is incredibly disappointing. $2700 on top of the thousands of dollars we paid just to be there is ridiculous for what we were provided. Because of this experience, the old dingy rooms and facility areas, we wouldn't return.

The fact that the story was true and that this famous singing family settled in Stowe, VT because it reminded them of their homeland, well, it's been a long-time dream of mine to visit the Von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe and feel the connection in person. And so I did... in July 2025, some SIXTY years after seeing the Sound of Music. We actually didn't stay here, which seems kind of odd considering what a fan I am. Now that I know how much there is to do in Stowe... and at the lodge itself, perhaps if we come back with plans to stay longer, I would stay here. The Von Trapp Family Lodge has so much to offer a person... whether one stays here or not. These are some of the activities: 1. Hiking 2. Mountain biking 3. Skiing / Cross-country skiing 4. Horse-drawn carriage rides 5. Sleigh Rides 6. Disc golf 7. Yoga / Massage 8. Bicycle rentals 9. Tennis 10. Swimming 11. Rock Climbing Wall 12. Indoor arts / crafts / culinary classes 13. Wine and/or beer tastings 14. Choice of 4 restaurants We thoroughly enjoyed walking around the lodge and grounds and learning more about the family and the history behind the lodge. Since this (ironically) my 1700th review, it's fitting that such a special place falls on a noteworthy review number.

I will start with the few positives about this place. The property itself is really nice and well…read morekept, but is extremely hilly which is not advertised well and is something that should be kept in mind while planning to travel, especially if you are older and struggle with rough terrain like at the Von Trapp Lodge. The tours were enjoyable, and was one of the only things my grandfather really enjoyed on this entire trip. Food on property was good, but was way too overpriced. We traveled to the lodge for my grandfathers 80th birthday as a family, and were looking forward to a good time, especially since he is a super fan of the Sound of Music films. We arrived with high hopes and were let down in every which way by this resort. First off, the service, besides maids in room service, were just awful. Upon arrival, the front desk staff told us that they changed our reservations and rooms around, despite the fact that we made them over a year and a half in advance. They separated the entire family, putting three rooms in the 400s and then one room on the other side of the lodge in the 200s when we had specifically booked 4 rooms all alongside each other. The service was terrible when we tried to have them fix this huge issue, and they made it seem almost as though it wasn't their problem to deal with. Conveniently, there was a wedding being held there the night we arrived, and we have heavy suspicion that our relocation was in relation to this wedding party that came in. The entire lodge itself is full of stairs and is like one big maze for the people staying there to navigate. It was exhausting for my grandparents, and heavy limited their activities while on the trip. The amenities seem nice, but aren't as advertised. Everything the place has to offer is spread out across the entire 2,600 acre property. The pools and hot tub are a big walk down a huge hill, and the pickleball courts are even further down another huge hill that was super inconvenient for the elderly and physically challenged in our family. No one wanted to play pickleball because it was so ridiculously far away, and essentially inaccessible. The disc golf, meeting cows, and meeting goats, etc. are anywhere between a 0.5 - 1 mile of a travel, so don't plan on walking anywhere because that distance once again includes tons of hills and ups and downs that aren't easy to get by. One of our rooms occupied by our family had a huge mishap, as the ceiling began to fall apart and water came into the room and soaked the clothes of someone traveling with us. The leak caused a huge issue and forced our family to once again have a relocation of rooms. All of a sudden, 4 rooms right next door to each other became 4 rooms on 3 different floors. Once again, only the maid staff was actually helpful in this situation, and they helped clean the mess and offered to wash the wet clothes. Then in the room I stayed in, the door to the patio broke from the inside, which basically made it inaccessible from the inside, unless you wanted to go all the way around the building to sit outside, and then do the same to come back inside. We alerted the staff multiple times about this, and not a single person ever came to fix the issue. One morning of our stay was also ruined by the hot water being shut off for hours at a time.Mind you, all of these troubles occurred in the modern wing of the lodge built in 2000, so I can only imagine what it was like for people staying in the older rooms from the original, rebuilt lodge in the early 1980s. In all the issues we had, not once was the front desk staff ever any help at all, and the manager was always conviently in some meeting or conference and avoided speaking with us. Almost nothing is actually included in your stay, there were fees implemented for basically anything you may have wanted to do, outside of the tours they offered. The fees were not cheap at all, the meals are expensive, and nothing is super affordable, so the fact that we paid thousands to stay at this place, but then had to pay more to actually use the amenities was absurd. I would never recommend staying here to anyone in my entire life, even if you enjoy the movies. My family travels a decent amount as well, so we have comparisons from countless other trips, and all of us more or less agreed that this is hands down one of, if not the worst places we've ever stayed at in terms of value for the price paid. I will also note this, in all my families travel, we have never had a stay somewhere that was bad enough to prompt us to write a review, so I legitimately created a Yelp account just to write this. I want this to be a guide for people who consider this place in the future, because if the things I listed dont bother you than go right ahead! You dont have to use this review as a direct reason not to go, but I do urge you to heavily consider these things before you hand youre money over to the Von Trapps, as this was just our personal experience with the place.

The top half of the mountain was all just a tiny powder on top of ice . The ice gets shaved throughout the day to build up the powder that then gets slapped into something akin to moguls throughout the slopes. Talking to people on the lifts made it very clear that the focus of skiing here is on the glades and not the groomers. Unfortunately my lack of experience made it rather tough to enjoy that. It also wasn't until midday on our second day that we finally discovered some more beginner friendly glades. We ended up being able to enjoy the moons and the bushwacker path. The layout of the lodge is also strange. It feels cramped and crowded even though there werent too many people there. All the lifts feel far too slow as well. Overall, the terrain was a little more advanced but had a few short trails for beginners. Several long blue runs and a few groomed black runs in addition to many more difficult mogul black runs. The resort was big enough that you had plenty to explore for a few days and also if you went with a group it wasn't so huge that it was impossible to meet up or find friends if you took an accidental detour. We opted for a package and it was reasonable. We chose to stay at the golf cottages which were perfect for our group, and could get around the resort with their shuttle system. There was a movie theater, bowling alley, climbing wall, mini golf as well as general store, bars and restaurants on site. If you buy a package some of the activities might be included in your price. If you want to eat off site there are a few restaurants about 15 minutes away. It was nice that they had so many things to do because this resort is in a pretty remote area and there isn't a ton around in the near vicinity.

Let's start with a disclaimer - our stay happened during the Spring off-off-off season…read more Our condo was clean, nice, and well-appointed. Almost everything was in good working order. We had a full kitchen, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms. Our bed was very comfortable. As dawn comes early this time of year (full light at 5 a.m.), we had both blackout blinds and drapes on the windows. The place was equipped with an Asko washer and dryer, which were very confusing to use. We never did get the dryer fully figured out. There was a large, jetted tub in our unit that took forever to fill and was noisy in use. The AC unit in our room was also noisy. As we were there during the off-season, the onsite restaurants were closed and wouldn't open for another couple of weeks. Which meant driving to get food. We stopped at a Hannaford grocery store in Burlington for breakfast foods before driving to the resort, but that left lunch and dinner. Of the nearest places to eat, one was closed on Monday and Tuesday, and was only open for brunch on Sunday. For recreation, the pool was open while we were there. It's heated and so was usable on chilly days. Do I recommend this place? The price was reasonable and the accommodations OK. I don't ski, so I can't speak to how the place is during that season. If you need a "home base" for wandering and don't mind the off-season inconveniences, Smugg's is a decent choice.

Wow. Get ready for some serious skiing. If you are into rough ungroomed and magnificent moguls,…read moredrops, trees, and cliffs you have found the place. You will not confuse this with Vail's well groomed and gentle slopes. This place is serious. Ok, I don't do mougls. I don't do cliffs. And trees are best viewed from a distance if I'm on my skis. But I confess to loving this place. Just WOW. It was my first visit 9Feb26 but it won't be my last. Young at heart and needing a place to show off your creds on the moguls then go here and bypass Stove. The snow here is far superior to Stowe and I think it's because they face north; no ice but lots of hard pack and soft underfoot. I skied top to bottom over three hours on some wonderful groomed steep blues and blacks. I saw the moguls as I roared past. I wish. I cannot. If you can go for it. (C you know who I'm talking to!) It's old school. The lifts are all doubles. There is no high-speed. And the views you get are to be considered worth the ride. Seventeen minutes to the top with a view of Mt. Washington in the distance. Did I say WOW. The base is a bit confusing for the first timer so here's some advice. - the first entrance is the hotel and baby slopes. - drive up the road for lot 3 on the right but don't park yet - turn left and drive up to the lodge and unload your gear - the driver can drive back down to lot 3 and park. - plenty of cubbies in the lodge and places to gear up - there are three main lifts here. get a map. Have fun. I'll be back.
