So, a week before, I came into the Moto Photo in Glenview to get a European passport photo. The Embassy had sent me instructions on getting the photo taken, which I brought with me. I showed the owner, John, the instructions and he said, "Those aren't right. It's cutting off the top of your head." But I was stubborn and insisted he take the photos per the instructions. He did, of course. When I came back to pick up my photos, John gave me a second set based on what he knew to be right. "There's no charge. But you might need them." A few days later I'm at the Luxembourg Embassy in Washington DC, filling out my passport application. I hand my passport photos to the woman behind the desk. "Oh dear," she said. "These are incorrect. The top of your head cannot be cut off." Fortunately, I had John's second set with me. I showed them to the woman. "Ah yes!" she exclaimed. "These are perfect!" I was clipped head top away from not getting my passport and wasting my trip to DC. A lot of other photo places might have said, "That knucklehead is wrong. But he insisted." And just give me the incorrect photos. But John saved me from my ignorance and gave me what he knew was right. This is one Luxembourg citizen and passport holder who is now a Moto Photo Glenview fan for life.

He was explaining how it was kind of used a lot and beat up. It was going to need to be cleaned up and fixed up. I can agree with that. I said so what would you give me for it.? He said let me see the other one. I said no I want to know how much you want to give me for this one. Well how much do you want? I said how much are you willing to give me for it? He said that we do them as a package. I don't run that way. I understand they want to get the best buy they can. Just tell me how much are you going pay me for the one. If I think it's fair, I'll sell it to you. So he didn't even get to see the second one I was going to sell. It was completely different from the first.

The owner is very confident of his skills and gives off a knowledgeable aura. He looked at a number of the lenses and bought a couple. I think he offered a bit on the low side, but I felt that his candid discussion was honest. The problem is that he identified one of the lenses as being broken (frozen). He showed me the problem area. He did not purchase it. Since I had a number of lenses he did not purchase I went to another camera dealer. When it came to that Leica lens I told him that it was looked at and was broken. The second dealer examined it and after moving the focus around the lens worked. The tab that was determined to be "frozen" just needed to be pushed in. It was in good shape. The second dealer bought the lens. So my concern is if you tell people you are a Leica authorized dealer, you should have known what the lens issue was.

They offer free estimates on their site for those of us with uncertainty. John replied to me right away with a reasonable, not scary, estimate. I drove to his shop with my camera and was treated with sincere and professional manner. He came out in the cold to my car (due to current situation with pandemic) and explained things that I didn't even think about. I told him I'm not in hurry. Only 2 days later, message from John letting me know it's fixed WITH SEVERAL PICTURES OF MY CAMERA! Now, talk about "attention to details"! It's like when you drop your dog off at dog daycare and they keep updating you with current pictures of your dog. This is the time to support your local business more than ever, and I'm almost glad that my camera broke, because now I know where to go if anything ever happens to my camera again!
