Dr. McComb took a very aggressive approach, refused to closely examine my chipped molar and reccomended procedures I did not need. About a year and a half ago my back top molar was badly chipped. I went and saw Dr. McComb and his recommendation was to undergo surgery to remove the nearby wisdom tooth and undergo a gingevectomy to remove gum around the tooth so he could see it better. He refused to examine the tooth closely until I did both surgical procedures and said that in the 5 days since my tooth chipped my gum "grew over the tooth". The tooth chipped slightly below the gum line and the gum simply folded over the remaining tooth. There was a negligible amount of "new gum growth". He also recommended a deep tooth root cleaning under anesthetic. I didn't like the idea of removing a wisdom tooth that was not causing problems and even more so I didn't like the idea of removing gum around a tooth that would hopefully soon be replaced with a crown. If I had done the gingevectomy the final result would be a crown with a massively lowered gum line. We discussed this and he said it didn't matter because he couldn't see my tooth so I had to. He kept citing "gum growth". I got two second opinions without telling them about what the other dentists said. They both reccomended a simple root canal and crown with a post in the middle to support the built up tooth. They said that the tooth was in a difficult spot so it was best to have a specialist do the root canal. I had the work done in Santa Rosa. It has been 1.5 years since the procedure and I'm very glad I did not go with the recommendation of Dr. McComb. I forget I even have a crown back there and the tooth works, looks and feels excellent. I will say though, I got my teeth cleaned at McCombs office and the hygienist was the best I've ever had. She did such a great job. She was meticulous, gentle and thorough. She got every spec of buildup. I left with perfectly clean teeth. Bummer that I don't feel comfortable going back in because the cleaning was great. read more

Dr. McComb has been awesome! I had another dentist who didn't take my insurance so I switched to Dr. McComb and my experiences so far have been amazing!! The staff is nice and I just had a crown and filling replaced (that were done by another dentist) and him and his staff did a way better job. I had some issues with my bite (Because of how my teeth fit together) and they got me in right away and fix it the day I called. This was the only dental practice in town my insurance covers and I really lucked out. This is a great office. Great office staff, great hygienists and Dr.McComb is fantastic as well. I haven't gone to a dentist regularly in years, so I didn't really know what to expect but I've been consistently pleased after every visit. They put you on a care plan with certain priorities as far as what you need done, with detailed explanations of quotes for pricing you know exactly what yore getting into. I'm really self conscious about the state of my teeth and the staff here has never made me feel embarrassed or ashamed about my poor dental health. After my second visit I know exactly what to expect as far as care, a general timeline and cost of all my different procedures, which is great for me as a college student. If you see McComb: GET A SECOND OPINION!! (This is an update) I thought McComb was a great dentist, until I learned that he just says everything with a fake smile, which somehow convinced me in the past. After I was dismissed as a patient I ended up seeking a dentist outside of Chico. McComb said I had a few teeth that needed fillings on the bottom. When I went to see my new dentist he automatically said "You know your front teeth are covered in cavities right?". I also learned I had no cavities on the bottom. McComb was going to let my teeth rot?! As I was getting my fillings from the new dentist my teeth literally looked like Swiss cheese, and for YEARS McComb told me I didn't have any cavities. (My new dentist is my dad's best friend who has a great record and assessed my mouth with integrity. So he didn't just drill up my mouth with bad intentions. He went out of his way to educate and show me where these cavaties were. ) I got my teeth cleaned by my new dentist and it was the first time I didn't cry at an appointment. Probably because the staff is laid back, understanding, and genuine. My dentist doesn't use God in his explanations for things either, which is a plus (seriously... keep religion separate especially if you are a doctor). Also, I had a lot of comments on the shape my teeth were in, and my dental hygienist told me that it looked like my teeth cleanings in the past were ineffective. She even used terminology as having "barnacles", from years and years of neglected spots. It took me until my last visit to realize at the new dentist that I had no problem with going to the dentist until McComb came into my life. Dr. J was my original dentist until he opted out to focus on cosmetic dentistry. Since then, the way I've been treated and "handled" had instilled me to be scared of the dentist. I don't know if it's the cheery "nothing is wrong... but actually everything is wrong" fake, creepy, robotic attitude that did it to me or what. I have another visit with my new dentist, so i will further update this post to point out other discovered flaws. TLDR: McComb was going to let my teeth rot. get a second opinion with this guy. _________ I have been going to this office for over 10 years. The last few years have been very rough on me. I really enjoyed having McComb as a dentist but where is practice fails is his office staff. Their philosophy on when to inform you of an appointment is not sound. They emailed me a month before my teeth cleaning and nothing else. They will not call you until it has been half way through your appointment. I have recommended someone here. And do you know what they said to him "maybe you should go somewhere else" because he was being "difficult". They hadn't even seen them yet. Since I have been dismissed after over ten years of being a patient I asked then where I should go. Because I have no idea since the last dentist I had was when I was a child. Jane said "go ask your dad". Every letter I they have claimed to send, every text, or call they have said they made.... never has been received. If you have a patient who is very upset they aren't being informed about their appointments... maybe you should investigate rather than dismiss them. Here is an idea: maybe some patients, who constantly ask to be reminded of their appointments... and are... wouldn't miss them. This may seem like a disgruntled person writing this... but I am giving this review based on the staff that had been in place in recent years. when I made my last appointment Jane was argumentative and I walked out in anger just talking to her. She should NOT be the person you see when you walk in. She should NOT be allowed to answer the phone is she's turning people in need away. She should NOT have any sort of power if she can't even think of one other dentist in town that a dismissed patient is asking for. Maybe tend to the patients needs rather than your own Ever since the office staff has changed I've had incredible issues. But McComb is great. read more

Besides being a wonderful dentist, Dr. McComb is a wonderful human. I was walking into Costco with him (he didn't know I was next to him and I didn't recognize him right away. He didn't have his mask on :) )when an older gentleman was blocking the entrance due to a faulty cart. As the entrance piled up with impatient humans who watched this man struggle, Dr. McComb stepped in and gave this man his cart and got the faulty one out of the way. Dr. McComb and his staff and hygienists are wonderful. Friendly, professional, and efficient. Wait times are brief, generally less than ten minutes. The entire office staff is so kind and flexible. Between obtaining childcare and my work schedule I have a really difficult time keeping an appointment, I will typically need to reschedule at least once. Jane has always been so patient with me and done her best to accommodate my multiple and obnoxious changes. I've always been impressed by the hygienists, they are quick but they do a great job...my teeth feel so shiny when they are done! Everything about this office is great - dentist, staff, front office, etc! They are friendly, professional, and on top of insurance stuff. They had my pre-authorization for follow-up work done by the end of the my cleaning (my first visit here) so I know exactly what my insurance would pay before I agreed to treatment. Being a dental patient with extreme anxiety Dr. McComb and his front office staff, Melissa and Jane, became "numb" to this after just one year (approximately 3 visits) of service. After a recently less than enjoyable experience I wrote Dr. McComb and the staff at Chico Dental Care expressing how hard my appointment was to get through. Being a relatively "new" patient to his practice I figured writing a letter would give them insight to how I experienced my appointment. Rather than discussing my concerns with either a call back or inviting me in to discuss this...I received a certified letter in the mail letting me know they would no longer be seeing me as a patient and for me to seek dental service else where. No call. No follow up response to my concerns on how I was treated by front staff person Jane or office manager Melissa. And yes...first visit -- treated ok...after that, unless you like going to the dentist -- FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE to go. I will be. read more
