I just moved to Nola uptown from New York and desperately needed my long hair cut and restyled again (had been 6 months). I have been going to Steven Sobel for years. He is the only hairdresser who I feel comfortable will treat my hair professionally. Typically, I will enter with an idea of what I want, and with Steven's guidance and advice, we find a compromise that both captures exactly what I want, but will still look good to even the most inscrutable critic. I have also gone to him for events, portraits, weddings, and debutante parties, and always left pleased with my hairstyle. I really trust Steven. He will give you his honest opinion on whether or not something looks good on you. Last time I was in, I asked to lighten my very dark brown hair, but as I am on a budget, constant hair maintenance was out of the question. Steven highlighted my hair the perfect shade of golden brown that looks natural and requires minimal upkeep. I have always been pleased with my hair after leaving Steven's salon, but this time, I was especially ecstatic! I moved to New Orleans about a month ago from San Francisco and was recommended this salon by a friend. Overall, I had a stellar experience: the salon was neat and clean, the music eclectic and not too loud, the hairdressers are chatty and fun. My colorist, Monique, did an awesome job on my highlights and low lights, giving my hair a naturally warm, honey glow. I only got a trim from her so I can't speak to her cutting skills, but I HIGHLY recommend her for highlights. I left the salon feeling and looking fabulous! As great of an experience as I had, there were still a few issues with the price tag: - Their website is outdated and had misleading price quotes: currently it says $65 for partial highlights, when in reality, it's $95. - I was charged $15 (normally $30, but the stylist gave me a discount) to have a toner treatment to my highlights. I've had highlights for a good 7 years now and I have NEVER had to pay extra for that treatment at any salon in Seattle or SF - I was charged $30 for a blow out, again, something that I have never had to pay extra for in getting a color treatment. It is normally included in the price. I decided to get a trim and pay $50 (which would include a blow out). I thought the pricing was equivalent for a big city salon and more than I had anticipated spending, but I did leave with amazing hair so it was worth it in the end. read more

I used to get my haircut up on Maple St. and when the salon closed I went across the street to try Sobel Salon. Steve, the owner, gave me an ok cut at first. I'm not fussy so I went back twice but noticed that each cut got successively worse. The owner seemed more interested in where I lived, and perhaps how much money I had, rather than paying attention to simply giving me a decent haircut. It was all a bit coarse, as well as creepy, so I have never gone back and recommend avoiding Sobel or his salon. read more

Every time I leave this salon, I feel that I've gotten the best haircut and colour of my life! Steven and his team are masterful when it comes to classic yet on-trend hair cutting, and there is simply not a better salon for stunning colour and highlights. One of the highlights of each visit is when Steven and I sit down before hand and discuss in detail the possibilities for my hair, and he always gives me expert advice as well as the courage to try things I'd always envisioned but didn't trust my hair to pull off. The girls working there are brilliant with a curling wand; if you want romantic, beachy, undone -yet perfect- waves, these stylists should be your first call. My cut/colour somehow even looks incredible as it is growing out, making each cut easy to maintain and realistic for those with a busy lifestyle (or just those who leave haircuts until 5 months later...!). The salon is pretty, calm, comfortable and full of quaint NOLA charm. Conversation is warm and friendly, and no one can resist falling in love with Steven's two gentle and giant labradoodles who often lounge around the salon! I'll be the first to admit, I'm a tough salon customer. Half the time I'm not really sure what it is I want, and then halfway through a haircut I realize that I'm not getting what I want but never say anything because I am too embarrassed or shy to say something. Steven doesn't let me get away with that. I started going to Steven because both my roommates gave him glowing reviews. I'm here to tell you, I thought getting bangs was going to be a mistake for one of them, but when she came home she looked absolutely fab, so I knew where I was going to go for my next cut. When I'm not in New Orleans, I don't get a haircut because nowhere can give me just what I want like Steven. Every stylist he hires is top notch, and I've gotten a cut from most of them. Since I had a rather traumatic experience with an at home bang job when I was in middle school, I've always avoided any drastic changes. Now, I trust the stylists at Steven Sobel with anything--layers, bangs, dyeing, etc. Beyond the awesome cuts, everyone who works here is so welcoming. Whenever I come in they are so friendly and nice. Heck, I've even been out on a walk with Midnight (Steven's adorable behemoth of a puppy that often stays at the salon). I cannot recommend this salon highly enough. I make a road trip to New Orleans every couple of months and make sure I schedule my haircuts when I'm in town. I have pixie cut that needs regularly updating and was recommended Eric @ Steven Sobel. Coming from London, where the standards of hairdressing are MUCH higher and stylists are more creatively trained, I've been somewhat reticent to give any nola hairdressers a go. But Eric was the man - he was fearless and creative and totally understood what I wanted. He suggested a razor cut, which gave it great texture, and did an amazing job of tapering the back with clippers as I have a naturally low-ish hairline. It's one of the best shapes I've ever had, including trips to Vidal Sassoon in London. Eric is also a super easy guy to chat to. Only reason I'm giving 4 stars not 5 is the salon lacked a little atmosphere. I guess it was a Thursday morning, but it was pretty quiet except for a client talking to who I assume was Steven himself extremely loudly the whole time I was there about the most boring stuff (taxes). I would have preferred some music to drown her out a little bit and to give it that hip factor it's maybe missing right now. $55 is a perfectly okay price though. I've absolutely found my hairdresser in Eric though - I'll be going back to him every 6 weeks or so for a trim, and I'm excited to see how we might play around with my style over the next few months. I had serious covid hair! Steven asked me to come in prior to the apt to get an idea of what he'd be working with. He suggested a lob and it looks fantastic. I have had long layers for years and this is the best/freshest haircut I've had in years. The color also came out incredible and really brightened up my features. After being a regular customer, (maybe they were getting too comfortable?) I'm very disappointed. Went in for partial highlights/toner ($90 is the most I have ever paid for this and my former colorist was on Camden in Beverly Hills!) & this time must be the last bc the quality has gone downhill. It took me getting a second opinion at another shop to see what they have been doing and that is taking advantage of me. They clearly avoided the back crown area & I still have obvious roots along my hairline after just being there. I should not have to continuously ask them to tighten the foils to my scalp when getting highlights. This thought occurred to me but the colorist's 2nd opinion confirmed that salons deliberately do this to increase visits. He doesn't check his work after your shampoo if you are NOT getting a blow out..I find that odd. It's always on to the next client and you are shoved out the door. You must always check your work, absolutely no one is perfect. Now I am forced to pay another salon for this color correction! Bad karma if this is how you treat your friends & I was giving him referrals in the beginning! Will find a colorist I can trust who can take the time to care about my hair and the work they do. read more

I would just note that if you don't want your hair blow dried say that early, although that's probably true of all hair salons! overall lovely experience! I needed a new perspective on my hair and wanted something fresh- I came to Steven with a few pictures and after consulting with what I was looking for- he walked me through what he recommended and went to work. I am completely blown away with the balayage and cut! ! I love it! The maintenance is easier with the roots, he styled my hair so I can get through the awkward stage of growing out my bangs and gave me a couple long layers but kept the pieces in the front a little longer so you can really tell the shape when it hits my shoulders.
