Granted, the decor isn't great and some say it's not real Korean (I'm not Korean nor have I been there) but if you want a giant plate of meat, rice, and tasty bean sprout salad this is your place. korean bbq is always sooo expensive, but steve's is definitely a good deal. i normally get the short ribs but i have definitely tried the chicken and it's pretty good. my only problem with the short ribs is there tends to be a lot of fat on them which doesn't taste so great. otherwise, the service is fast and the jap chae is always good. whenever i go to berkeley, i always stop by to get a quick meal at steve's and save the rest for a late night snack later on. read more

Food isnt spectacular but it outshines most places in the asian ghetto. I always get the Short Ribs and on some occasions the BBQ chicken. SIde of Kimchi and bean Sprouts are not good at all so you should just swap it out for extra rice. If you were thinking of the tofu soup, it is not a good idea. There really isn't good korean food in Berkeley. However, if you're having a craving and don't have a lot of time, then this was the place to go. Not too expensive and give decent portions. This place isn't too bad. The first time I came here, it really messed up my stomach and I didn't plan on going back, but I gave it another shot the other day and it was much better. Not meant to be a knock against the quality but let's face it, when it comes to KBBQ this isn't really making the cut on taste. BUT it's not like it tastes bad... It's like eating Panda Express, I like it but it's no where close to being Chinese food. I always get the spicy pork when I roll through here and it comes with a side of bean sprouts and kimchi. Loading up on that scrumptious hot sauce goes a long way in your dining experience and they take credit without charging more for it which is a nice touch for a restaurant in Asian Ghetto. This place is cheap and the portions are plentiful. I got chicken with noodles. I don't remember what the dish is actually called but it was good. The food is Americanized and tastes kind of Chinese, but its good. I can tell its not authentic or trying to be trendy like some other near by places, but it works. All I gotta say is that I can't get enough of Steve's Meat! The #4 is SOOOO good, I can't get enough of it. It really doesn't taste much different from "real" Korean Kal-Bi, so fill up here. If you were to go to those "authentic" korean restraunts, you'll probably get a quarter of the meat for double the price, and it won't taste that much better. Huge, huge, huge, HUGE portions of food. A little pricier than other places in the Asian Ghetto. Meat quality is a little questionable (at least the chicken). Been going to this place since I was a boy. For 7 bucks they really hook you up with a lot of meat. My only complaint is that it isn't open till 2am like top dog across the street from it. If you want fast and cheap Korean food, this is the place.....it's sooo good I would live in North Korea for a year if someone told me I had to to eat this. read more

we stopped in during lunch on Sunday. I got the chicken and the wife got a dish with noodles also. Each comes with Kim Chi, rice and some sprouts. It was all very good, The whole plate cost 6.99. My kid ate that rice and chicken up. I would recommend this place to anyone. read more

The whole plate is covered in chicken and you get two kim chi side dishes along with a mountain of rice. I've read the reviews that say this is cheap, inauthentic Korean food, but what else do you think you're getting into at the Asian Ghetto (is it still called that?). If you want real Korean food, go to Korea town or... Korea. I love Steve's for the same reason I like that one Chinese restaurant that probably pumps their DELICIOUS food with MSG (allegedly- covering my legal bases here), and Tako Sushi- it's fast fare that is probably bad for you but hits that sweet spot on a rainy day or during the stress of finals weeks. Their Spicy Chicken plate is amazing, I always get lots of the condiments. The portions are heavenly and I am always full after. The price is pretty stellar too, generally everything is under $10. This place has gone downhill. The last few visits, the kimchi has been sour instead of spicy and the bean sprouts are too sweet. I've been disappointed to watch the prices rise over and over; a grilled noodle & beef plate is now almost $11. Their saving grace is their huge portion sizes.
