We absolutely loved every dish! This place caters to people who know Szechuan cuisine very well and it's all about the food. You scan a QR code and order from your phone. You can keep adding to your other until you check out. The place is very casual but spacious. We had mapu tofu, tan tan noodles (dan dan noodles), eggplant, green beans and pork dumplings in chili oil. It was a ton of food... more than the three of us could eat, so we took some to go. Everything we tried was perfect. The spices and oils were a celebration of Szechuan food, with plenty of Szechuan peppercorn. Such wonderful flavors! We were so happy we came here. It was a pit stop for us on a drive from Oakland to Antioch... somewhat out of our way but oh so worth it!

I used to come here almost once every week when I used to live in Berkeley. Visited after 7 years. Honestly a little disappointed. But still pretty good. We ordered the sautéed green bean, spicy chicken with Mexican pepper and rice noodles with chicken. The green bean is the star, very very nice. The spicy chicken is ok although chicken is a bit dry. The rice noodles is good albeit bland and we asked for chili oil as a sauce to eat it with. The service is very fast, waiter is prompt and helpful. Looking forward to trying out other menu items. Definitely very authentic Chengdu style food.

Chengdu Style is a staple of Sichuan cuisine in Berkeley. Having been here since before a lot of the newer Chinese restaurants, it's been a consistent place to get solid Chinese food. Some of the highlights are the Sichuan classic Sichuan boiled fish (水煮鱼) which is a large bowl of tender fish slices in a spicy chili broth. Eaten by mixing with rice, you can't go wrong with this dish. Other highlights include the sliced pork in chili oil, which is a cold dish but packs a nice kick with the chili oil spice. Mapo tofu is another one of the classic Sichuan dishes, however, this particular dish is a bit bland and lacks the numbing spice necessary to make it worth-while. Overall, Chengdu Style is a solid spot to get Chinese food. In addition to ordering from the menu, you can also go straight to the counter to get some of the pre-made dishes, making it a quick lunch/dinner option as well.

One of my favorite go-to spots for lunch. Super close to campus with amazing, authentic Chinese food, large portions, and cheap prices. To be honest, the food itself probably isn't 5 stars and more 4 stars. However, I am bias. I love their options, portions, and price. Food is ready super quickly. It's a "lunch line" layout. You can choose 2 or 3 dishes alongside rice, fried rice, or noodles. There is also an option for a side of soup. I normally get a choose 3 lunch special combo - white rice with cabbage, pork belly, and something new. Again, flavors are flavoring and Chinese food is nostalgia-ing. I'm super full after. Often, I have some food for leftovers. See you soon Chengdu Style lunch special. Also, bring cash. It's cheaper with cash.

Chengdu Style has amazing portions for the prices they offer! The toothpick lamb dish was especially tasty, with a nice kick of spice that adds plenty of flavor as it is meant to be eaten with rice. Will definitely be coming back soon!

I ordered the eggplant and it was very flavorful but also oily. The service is average. You order online through QR code. The ambiance is very casual and a good place to go with friends and family.

Came to Chengdu Style on Wednesday around noon and it was half filled with students. Most ppl come and order the plate meal from the counter, sorta like panda express assembly line. The interior was clean and bright. There is only street parking. I told the staff that i was ordering from the menu and she directed me to a table. I ordered the boiled fish fillet and the cheng du pork chops (it's more like chopped spare ribs). The boiled fish came in a large portion. There were plenty of fish fillets in the bowl. It was not as spicy as I expected. The boiled fish was delicious 5 out of 5. The ribs were okay since i had way better version of it before in Irvine and in Houston. The ribs were deep fried and then stir fried with spices. I rate the ribs 3.5 out of 5.

The most authentic Chinese food you can get in Berkeley. The food is good, but if you don't/can't appreciate oily food I would ask them for items that are less so. The pork dishes are absolutely incredible! I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a new and interesting dining experience. Service is great, I went with my friend who's a regular and they treated us very well. Ambiance is campus casual.

    Lunch with family.

The food is good here. Lots of college students and staff go here to eat. Nothing flashy but its decent ambience. The waitress was friendly but service was very slow especially once your food is delivered , you will have to get their attention if you need refills on your drinks or whatever need may arise.

Three dish combo with rice/noodle and a soup. Authentic Sichuan style. Very good deal for a quick but comfort lunch!

Went here with my parents and it was overall a great experience. The food came out fast and really liked the flavor of the Mongolian beef. A bit disappointed with the Sautéed String Beans as they were cooked differently than expected and the beans felt old as well. Overall the flavor was great, service was great, and I would highly recommend if you are looking for Chinese food in Berkeley.

Great spot near berkeley, but we came on a hot summer day and there wasn't any AC. The cumin lamb were amazing and i loved all the peppers mixed in! It was the perfect combination of spice.

Tonight I was craving good local chinese food and decided to give this place another try. I don't know why. I always felt bad with each previous sad serving. It was terrific! The order was ready on time. The containers were bulging with food when before the servings were getting skimpier and skimpier. The chow fun was not swimming in oil. The cumin lamb was no longer 90% peppers but a generous portion of lamb and a good ratio of peppers. The crispy chicken appetizer was delightful. The dry green beans had a snap. It was such a complete reversal from the last experiences that I'm glad I went back and we will certainly continue to satisfy our Szechuan cravings with this place. I had braced myself expecting in these dire times with many food places closing or gasping with high costs, a less than stellar experience. What a wonderful surprise!

Good spice level and lots of hot chili oil. The dish we always get when we go - D08 Glutinous Rice Ball. It covers almost all the tastes and textures (sweet, salty, spicy, fried exterior, gooey/chewy, with a liquidy filling). Only a mad genius could have come up with this dish and it works brilliantly. The rest of our dishes vary a bit each time we go, but it's usually some spicy dishes and at least a veggie dish. Really haven't had complaints on the food. The food came out so fast! In less than 20 minutes, we had every single dish that we ordered. My favorite dish was the Salted Egg Yolk Fried Chicken. The batter was light, very crispy, and seasoned to perfection. The chicken itself was juicy, piping hot, and kept me going back for more. The mala level in the Chonqing noodle dish was very beginner friendly. If you're looking for an intense numbing sensation with a "oh gosh maybe I should slow down" type of spice, you should ask them to make it more spicy. The rib was definitely the most impressive part of the dish. Not only was it huge and very Instagrammable, but it was also extremely tender--kind of like braised oxtail, but served in a cleaner, lighter broth. The daikon balanced out the richness of the meat really well, and overall, I'd say this was a very satisfying meal. The beef and tomato lo mein, on the other hand, was probably closer to a 2.5/5. The dish leaned heavily on the tomato flavor, only had a few pieces of meat, and definitely needed additional seasoning, such as soy sauce, white pepper, or something to bring more depth. One thing that could be improved is the ordering experience. Their tablet system felt a bit cheap, and it was difficult to clearly see what each dish looked like on the screen. It's actually a popular, higher-end Chinese restaurant in downtown Berkeley, and judging by the number of people waiting to be seated on a weekend only 30 minutes after opening, it clearly does very well. One note: I often see long weekend lines forming even before opening, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation or arriving early. We came here with one thing in mind: Peking duck. It was prepared beautifully, with the exact nostalgic flavor and crispy skin I was hoping for. I also loved the way they presented the thin pancakes--half-folded and slightly overlapping each other--so you didn't have to worry about peeling each layer apart and accidentally ripping them. The dipping sauce and green onions were provided on the side, though I do wish they included thinly sliced cucumber to complete the experience. My husband also ordered the fish, which turned out soft, delicate, and delicious. It was a nice complement to the duck and rounded out the meal really well. My only real critique of Great China is the pricing. You're definitely paying a premium here, but the food does taste authentic and well-executed. Given the limited competition in the area, I can see why it feels justifiable if you live nearby. That said, it may not be as worth the splurge for people who already have easy access to more traditional, old-school Chinese restaurants.

This was my experience with pretty much every dish I ordered on a recent trip to Yu Yu Za Zang. I'll admit this is one of those places I've walked or driven past for years and have always meant to try but just never got around to it. But I finally had an opportunity to drag my cousin/regular dining buddy with me. We ordered Yang Jang Pi (also known as Double Skin in some places), regular jajang (spelled zazang here) myun, and tang sue yuk (beef - which is the traditional Korean meat for this dish). My cousin and I are huuuuuge fans of the Double Skin at Great China in Berkeley, so the Double Skin here had a pretty high bar to reach. We were pleasantly surprised to find it more than held its own. The portions of everything were very generous, and the mustard dressing was nice and spicy. Perhaps the veggies were not quite as crunchy as Great China's, so not as much of a variety of textures, but this Yang Jang Pi was still delicious, and I still think about it days after our visit. The jajang (zazang) myun was also very generously portioned and pretty tasty. I haven't had any in Oakland in a while, so hard to say how it compares, but I would definitely eat it again. The beef tang sue yuk was incredible. Again, large portion, perfectly crispy outside, tender beef inside, and one of the best sweet and sour sauces I've ever had with this dish. The vibe is simple and clean; nothing fancy, but I went for the food, so I was fine with that. The service was also friendly and fast. There were barely any people there on a Saturday evening, which made me sad, because the food really is good. I can't wait to try the rest of their menu. They also have soju and beer. Although Hanshin Pocha next door is popular, I could see Yu Yu Za Zang being a decent spot for delicious, very reasonably priced food that one can share with friends while having a couple of rounds of drinks. And in this economy, aren't we all looking for a good deal?
