My sister & I take an annual sister's trip every year and this year we decided on Catalina Island. We wanted to treat ourselves to a great dinner and Steve's Steakhouse did not disappoint. Johnny was our server and he was fantastic. He kept apologizing for the wait but at any point we weren't questioning where our drinks or food were. My sister just recently lost a friend and took a phone call regarding that and Johnny gave her a hug and offered his condolences. A phenomenal service experience accompanied by phenomenal food. Went here for my fancy birthday dinner, which apparently wasn't a unique idea: over the course of our two hours in the restaurant, a minimum of FIVE other people were sneak attacked by a herd of male waiters loudly belting out the birthday song with a little gratis fudge sundae, complete with candle. It's no surprise why-- this place is *great*. Avalon's tiny, so if you want to do it right on your b-day, there are only so many places to go. Steve's is a fine choice, with a great view, plenty of fancy cocktails and quality fare. I got both a Buffalo Milk and Pina Colada (what? it's my birthday!) which were delicious and well-made, and we got oysters on a half shell to start (which I get everywhere in Avalon, because they're so readily available.) The oysters were great, as expected... some of the best I've had, and my dinner was also superb: I got the lobster tail, which was perfect in every way, couldn't have asked for a better one. The salad wasn't anything too fancy, but I loved the dressing (champagne vinaigrette is the way to go), and the steak was also excellent. The food was ehhhhh, maybe it's hard to impress us bc we are from new Orleans or maybe the batter was dull and kind of a long John silvers knock off. It was without season, tasteless, and bland. The coconut shrimp were really good accompanied by the sauce they have. It was the $18 price tag for 4 shrimp that left the horrible taste in our mouth. If you ask them for a cup of water, they will give you an Arrowhead bottled water instead (not free, but at least they only charged additional $0.50). To be fair, I visited two other bars at Avalon and both bars also served bottled water - I guess you won't find a cup of drinkable water here. Rib-eye steak (a 10 oz. black Angus cut well marbled for peak flavor + pilaf rice, $24.5): I had the steak medium rare. It was actually pretty good and tasted like $20 steak - flavorful and juicy, but pilaf rice was a bit salty. 4-star on rib-eye and 3-star on pilaf rice. It's not a bad place for a casual lunch (from $11.5 sandwich to $24.5 rib-eye steak or filet mignon), but not necessary a must-visit restaurant. read more

I came to Steve's tonight with my mom after our waitress from The Lobster Trap suggested it to us yesterday. It is so nice to see the local businesses supporting one another. I ordered the sea bass with mushrooms and lemon caper sauce. My mom ordered the steak and Avalon scallops combo. We both sampled all components of each other's dishes and agreed that the steak was okay (we ordered it medium, it tasted fine, but nothing particularly special) but the sea bass and scallops were EXCELLENT! I can wholeheartedly say the sea bass was the best sea bass I have ever eaten and maybe, as a whole, one of the best fish dishes I've had in my life too. My mom thought the same thing about her scallops. The sea bass and scallops were cooked to perfection and the sauces on both dishes were out of this world. Johnny was our waiter and provided great service. He was very friendly, helpful, and answered the many questions my mom and I had about the food and about life on Catalina Island. Thanks Johnny for everything! My mom and I have one more day on Catalina Island tomorrow before we get back on the ferry to the mainland tomorrow. We are considering coming back to Steve's again for lunch tomorrow because of our great experience tonight. read more

So I'm not quite sure why so many people only gave them bad reviews. I enjoyed our dinner. As you can see from the pictures, my husband had the sea bass and I had the salmon. Our servers were awesome. Glasses never empty and our waiter checked on us constantly. Maybe all the bad reviews have them on there p's and q's. Anyway the ambiance was awesome. We didn't get to sit near a window but had a great view. My husband said the sea bass was okay not the best he ever had but still decent. The salmon was cooked nicely. My husband and I enjoyed our meal. We had an early dinner so the restaurant wasn't busy yet. Our waiter Johnny gave us excellent service, he was friendly and attentive. The food was delicious. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because this restaurant charges $5.00 if you want bread with your meal, the same amount of bread that others restaurants include with your meal. And if you order potato skins, if you want bacon it costs an extra $2.50. Potato skins are all made with cheese and bacon. That is ridiculous! Luckily enough we were able to get a table for 2 by the window on a Friday evening. View is great. The dining room was busy, but still a handful of empty tables. We ordered bottle of wine and were enjoying our first few sips when the waitress started pressuring us to order, we advised we just wanted to relax and enjoy a glass of wine and asked if she could come back in 10 minutes, she said it was too busy and she would be back in 5 minutes. That caught us off guard. We just wanted to have some wine, I mean we did buy a bottle... The waitress came back and asked again, we said we were still reviewing and she said she would be back in 2 minutes. Really? 2 minutes? At this time a few more tables had opened up so it wasn't an occupancy issue. We ended up ordering the vegan chicken tenders (which were just the Gardein brand you can buy from Vons ) and the oysters which made my fiancé vomit after consuming. After our food was dropped off, our waitress only came back once to check in. Pressured to order immediately and then barely any follow up. 2 stars because the view is cute, but wouldn't visit again. My bf and I did looked that way prior but didn't even recognize it. Simple and semi romantic type of atmosphere. But of course many folks are dressed casual. Since its off Catalina. Cash and credit card is accepted. They do walk ins and reservations. Overall, the experience was okay. I really wished there was more marination to the steaks. Nothing that blew us away and that's probably because we like steaks and we've been to mastros, cut, Sam and Harry's, etc. it's hard not to compare. This was my first time coming here and I went with my bf. The place is upstairs above this Mexican restaurant. You don't get a good feel for the lace until you go upstairs. And since it's October, they had some Halloween decorations around, which were cool. I didn't care too much for the hostess, but our waiter was really nice. He didn't rush us to order and came back in a sufficient amount of time to order. Before our appetizer cane, there was complimentary bed given- sourdough which was tasty as well. They gave you lots of butter to use on the bread, but that wasn't really needed. Our appetizer, we ordered sashimi that came with yellowfin Tuna on a bed of shredded cabbage. The appetizer was delicious, however, the wasabi was dangerous. They both are like our heads were going to explode from how hot the wasabi was. We both ordered the same thing- surf & turf with Steak & lobster. He got his steak medium rare & mine medium well. He ordered a corona & I, a raspberry martini. Our dishes were both delicious! The medium rare was really tasty as well as the medium well. To determine the desired cookness of your steak, they put a cute little popsicle stick with medium rare or medium well inside the steak. He had the rice pilaf while I had the garlic mashed potatoes, both were really good. The martini was delicious, but the glass was small. But that was the first time I've ever had a martini. So that could be standard. Too full to finish my plate of food so I gave the rest to my bf the plates are a great size so you will probably not finish, especially with bread eating. I think the fact that we were there during the week worked to our advantage although we did have a reservation with ocean view/window requested. I ordered the filet and had to complaints. I enjoyed it as did my husband with his meal, the ribeye steak with mushrooms. The server we had was also pretty good - no complaints there. My one little complaint? It was my husband's 40th birthday and they charged for a small, simple chocolate cake dessert. We made it clear that it was his birthday so if it's your policy to charge for a birthday dessert TELL THE CUSTOMER that. No problem but you should at least mention that. Had the hubs' birthday dinner at Steve's since he was looking for lobster (and the Lobster Trap down the street looked super divey)! We went upstairs and were taken immediately to a table by the open windows looking out over Avalon harbor - perfect atmosphere was set up without even asking! Ordered martinis on arrival - they were served in deep martini glasses, so they could have been a bit colder but the bartender did not overdo the vermouth...points for that. Decided to start by splitting their Caesar salad - basic but good...plate and romaine were cold and they go light on the dressing, which is nice. For entrees, the hubs went with the South African Lobster Tails (you get two) and I had the 6 oz Filet Mignon. For whatever reason, we were both in the mood for fries as a side. Those could have gone a bit longer in the fryer but they weren't soggy. Lobster and steak came out perfectly cooked and were delicious. We had dinner at Steve's on Sunday 6/13/21. We have eaten there several times over the years. It was such a wonderful experience to dine on the beach this time. I liked that we were able to eat on the beach. Downside was that we ordered a medium rare ribeye that was supposedly a prime cut, didn't taste much like it though. Also the steak came out more pinkish brown than pinkish red. When we mentioned this to our waiter he disagreed and made it so awkward just standing there next to us. He then went to go ask the other staff and came back saying it might've been the lighting but finally offered to take it back to the kitchen. My husband and I are on Catalina for our honeymoon and had dinner here tonight. I loved walking up the stairs and into the dining room. The atmosphere was very welcoming. Our server was Adam and he was a very nice guy. We asked if we could be seated at a 4 top so we could sit next to each other instead of the 2 top and he was able to accommodate us even though they probably wanted 4 people at that table. We had a couple of cocktails which were delicious (lemon drop and key lime martini). I'd never had duck before so we ordered their Duck Cigars. I decided duck wasn't for me, but they were cooked really well and the sauce was wonderful. My husband ordered the filet mignonette and I ordered the catch of the day (I've already forgotten the name but it was bass of some sort) in a lemon butter sauce with capers. The steak was cooked perfectly and almost melted in your mouth. The fish was also cooked perfectly and the sauce was so light and just perfect for the fish. We also ordered some bread and it did not disappoint: hot, crusty on the outside and chewy inside. Definitely worth the minimal extra cost. We finished up with a piece of the mud pie and it was really really good. The service was impeccable and the food was brought out in a timely manner. They had a lot of staff taking care of all their guests. We didn't feel like we were being rushed out so they could seat someone else. Only two stars because of the view and the live music on the beach. We were promptly seated and the server took our drink order and appetizer order. It took 20 minutes for us to receive our bottle of wine and dirty martini. No appetizers were served and we placed our meal order of a medium rare filet 2 lobster tails, kids steak medium rare and an order of butter noodles. We then had to ask a bus boy for bread and was informed it would be $2.00 for bread. We said okay as our two children were starving. It took another 45 minutes for us to receive our meal. The filet was completely cold and the lobster tails were warm, kids food was piping Hot. When bringing it to the attention to the manager who was working in the kitchen he said well what do you want me to do about it then proceeded to state he would steal someone else's filet. After checking into our hotel, my partner and I were looking for a place to eat and we stumbled at Steve's steakhouse. The view at the restaurant is great since it's a waterfront location. The food, however, was mediocre. We ordered the buffalo burger and the swordfish with a side of pilaf rice. The meal wasn't bad but it wasn't great. I think what made me disappointed was how small the portions were given the pricing but I guess Avalon's food is at a higher price point. It is pretty crazy that this is considered one the best restaurants on Catalina, because it is not good. I came here with my boyfriend and our friends at 6pm on a Friday, and got a window table immediately. The view is nice, overlooking Avalon Bay. Decor is trying hard to be upscale, to the point of being cheesy. This is definitely a more casual spot. Service was friendly, but not attentive-my water cup sat empty for the majority of our meal. I was pleased to find several fully vegetarian/vegan options on the menu. I got the Impossible Burger, which was easily the worst preparation of the plant based meat I have ever eaten. The burger itself was good-juicy, flavorful, meaty. Unfortunately, the bland, burnt bun, limp lettuce, and flavorless tomato did it no favors. The sautéed vegetables served alongside definitely came out of a frozen bag, which is the ultimate restaurant faux pas for me, as I won't even eat these at home. The Caprese Salad was better, despite the low quality fresh mozzarella, slightly underripe tomato, and mysterious absence of basil (how? Why?). My boyfriend ordered a medium rare steak, which was very overcooked, grey in color. We got the Chocolate Cake and Key Lime Pie for dessert, both of which tasted like they had been in the refrigerator for a week. Neither were bad, but I have had better versions from Vons. I wish I could recommend a better restaurant in the area, but Catalina seems to be a culinary desert. read more
