Had I gone to Stew Leonard's prior to going to Total Wine [in West Orange] I would have given Stew 4 stars. The Clifton Stew Leonard's is an extensive wine and beer shop. They layout of the store is relaxed. The hardwood floors, oak shelves and soft lighting give the store a mellow vibe. Wine bottles line the walls by region. On top of each wall section there is a quaint decorative barrel with a neat description of the type of wine. The floor displays are scattered throughout the store. The floor bottles are also grouped by region. Unfortunately, I found the floor layout confusing and difficult to navigate. For instance, the floor wines were grouped by country but there was no signage. Yea, I know... Just look at the bottle, but ain't nobody got time for that! The prices are reasonable, and there are plenty of bottles for under $10! There is also a designated section of fine wines (you know the kind that doesn't come from a box). I think Stew Leonard's is a pretty well well rounded store since it has a decent beer selection, as well as small food section. In the end, I would come back and purchase a bottle if I were in the area. However, as of now, Total Wines is the undisputed champ of boozey-marts. read more

This is literally my go to spot to pick up liquor! Their wine selection is extensive and organized by type and even country, which is great if you're looking for a particar type or looking to try something new. Each one has a brief description and a wine rating that is super helpful! They also have awesome craft beers, IPAs, snacks, gift baskets, snacks and even gift bags for those last minute gifts. If you're looking for something on the higher end, they have you covered as they have a whole separate room filled with these type of bottles! Hands down, Stew's is my "go-to" place for wine and beer. Best liquor store in the area with such an incredibly large variety of wine. The only place around that carries several different brands of Falanghina - and my favorite Sauvignon Blanc: "The Crossings". I could get lost in this store just exploring wines from every country, which is why I love that each bottle has a card below it, explaining the flavor, strength, rating, etc. Staff is extremely helpful and if you look lost, they are quick to come over and help. I was hunting for an apricot wheat beer once and one member of the staff was happy to go searching for me. He successfully found this random brew, which very few stores in my area carry. I haven't really shopped for hard liquor here, but the selection seems decent. You can also pick up some fantastic cheeses and meats - highly recommend the New York Aged Cheddar! Stew's usually has a few cheeses out for tasting, along with wine tastings throughout the week. I have never had an issue with any of the staff, and I'm there so often - the cashiers know me (and my favorite wine!). They are super nice, friendly and fast. There are some reserved spots for parking since the entire Promenade area can get really crowded Thursday-Sunday nights; but I've only once had to circle the lots multiple times to find a spot. I love the classy feel of this place, unlike a lot of other wine and liquor stores. Very comparable to Bottle King in terms of both the price and selection of beer, wine, liquor, cheeses, etc., but it just has a nicer feel to it. On my list of my all-time favorite liquor stores in northern New Jersey, this Stew Leonards location ranks at numero dos (the winner is Super Buy Rite in Jersey City). I love Stew Leonards because of the convenient location, the classy interior decor, and the awesome selection of both beer and wine. At most liquor stores, I will either find a great selection of wine and little beer OR a great selection of beer and little wine. This place has BOTH. The store has great prices on all my favorite budget wines like Snowqualmie Reisling, Paringa Shiraz, and Chateau St. Michele Eroica. In addition, they almost always have my favorite everyday beer in stock: RiverHorse Hop Hazard. I love their selection of seasonal beers, and they also keep a great selection of cold beer in the refrigerator. I have been here before to pick up a quick bottle of champagne or 6 pack of beer. I knew they had a lot of wine selection and now that I have progressed into a semi wine snob I am impressed with their extensive selection and great prices. Their cheese selection is very good as well. Their staff is very helpful and make very good recommendations. Checking out is generally the thorn in my side. It's hit or miss. This is by far one of my favorite Wine stores around. They offer an extensive selection of wines, spirits and also feature a separate room with all their high end stuff. Everything is labelled accordingly and makes it very easy to find whatever it is that you are looking for. The staff there is always friendly and will walk you over and help you find exactly what you need instead of just pointing to where it might be and sending you on your way. They also always make their own recommendations based on what it is that you like. The prices in the store are very good compared to the rest in the area. They also feature wine tastings where you can sample lots of different wines on daily bases if you are not sure what you want, or just want something different. Also they have cheese and hors d'oeuvres tastings as well as suggestions on wine and food pairing. It is also extremely conveniently located right on the highway. read more

Happy to have this place in town. They have a huge selection and great prices. There are some things they do not stock (powers whiskey) and their options for mixers arent great, but they have tons of beer, huge amounts of wine, and all at a great price. The staff knows where everything is and is friendly. It is a farther drive than my corner store, but the price and selection is unmatched. The oddest thing about this place is its location. The mall that it is in is very odd. The entrance for the entire complex is through Fridays. SL is tucked in behind Fridays. I prefer using the back entrance as 3 can get crazy. read more

I was at a liquor store in Belleville about to buy a bottle of Kettle but couldn't pull the trigger because I knew I could get it cheaper. I headed over to Stew Leonard's and bought the same size bottle for $5 cheaper. And since the liquor is over by the beer, I couldn't resist doing a mix-and-match case of some choice six packs from around the country. You really can't beat the selection no matter what booze you're in the market for. Their wine selection is obviously extensive, but what really impressed me was the six packs they had to choose from. Skip the refrigerator and head over to the warm sixers for the most diverse options. Saturday errands aren't complete without a stop at Stew Leonard's. If you enjoy fine beers and wines, this place needs to make it on your list. The store is a true gem if you're looking for wine, as it occupies about 2/3 of the store. They have about the largest selection of wines I've ever seen from all over the world. There is even a small sake section, which I don't think I've seen in any other liquor store. Most of the remaining 1/3 of the store is beer. Imported, domestic, even local New Jersey beers all have a place here. The only downside is that they seem to have trouble consistently stocking some of their import beers. Their liquor section is good, but not anything crazy or fantastic. They used to have a better selection, but they may have cut down to accommodate more space for wine and beer. In any case, they have all the major labels with a few lesser-knowns; enough to satisfy if you're simply restocking your cabinet or planning a big party. What really sets this store apart for me is that almost every single bottle of alcohol is accompanied by a small, descriptive card. This provides you with a clear flavor profile, and often includes a rating or the label "Staff Pick." I love import beers but the nicer ones tend to be $5 a bottle, and its nice to have some guidance in terms of what to try next so I don't waste my money. They also offer a decent selection of cheeses, although I thought $4 was a little pricey for the size of the Wenslydale wedge they had. The staff all seemed very friendly and knowledgeable to me. The only thing that bummed me out was that a few months ago, I stopped in for my favorite import beer and couldn't find it. When I asked an employee if they knew when they would have it back in, he said he wasn't sure but offered to put me on a call list for when it was back in stock (apparently I wasn't the only one in love with this brew). I stopped in a few days ago and, to my surprise, there it was on the shelf! I was kind of miffed as to why they would offer to put me on a calling this, and then not call when the product was restocked :( Other than that I've never had a bad experience with this store, and even that was just more 'inconvenient' than 'bad.' Best place I have gone to around the area for the longest. Great selection of wine and beer. Very clean and welcoming atmosphere. Their staff is friendly and usually has someone walking around the store that will help choose a wine that is good for you or the occasion. Somebody that actually knows a thing or two about wine, not just give generic information that can be easily googled. (lol) (It was great as a first experience to the different types of wines, not to mention they do not hesitate to let you taste if they have it available). First off, this place is vast. It is like Whole Foods but grander and "bloody expensive too." I quote my buddy on that one. :-) While I adore the arrangement and assortment of goods, I think driving up here is half the fun. Living in metropolitan areas too long does that to you I suppose. :-P You might laugh at this but I think the fact that they have actual cows, ducks, chickens and lambs near the entrance of their store made this place more fun than it would if they didn't have any of them around. I think that was the whole point and I was very amused by the mini farm. Yes, the music they play is a bit cheesy but I think the whole point of it is to attract you in some way. They did their job well on that part. :-) Otherwise, it's just a supermarket with prices that are a little steep. Everything is neatly arranged and the place is very clean. People who work there are nice. They sell cooked food like fresh chicken wings which my buddy commented as "Very good." :-) I didn't eat chicken wings because I don't eat them but 'll take his word for it though. :-) Great wine selection as well and the only funny thing I would mention is that they have a hot pretzel case in the checkout as well as pizza for $2? I'm not sure why I felt that was out of place but it was. ^^;; My friend came here and left with some chicken wings and water. Ever since I've started my wine obsession, a trip to Stew Leonard's Wine and Spirits always lifts my spirit. Why you ask? Well because they have quite an extensive wine selection at different price ranges. I've discovered wonderful wines by simply browsing, and of course using my trusted DELECTABLE app (yeah shout out to my fav app), the well-organized aisles that they have. I'm proud to say that the amateur sommelier in me and the fire for great tasting wine is being flamed by this amazing store. Sure there are other high-end specialty vino establishments out there but this place provides a fantastic array for any occasion. Whether you are in the mood for cab sav, merlot, pinot, syrah, camanere, nebbiolo, and on and on I'm sure you'll find your favorite wine here. Maybe you might even discover something new. They are friendly and eager to help. There is a wide selection and prices vary from very economical on up. They sell nice packages for all the holidays. Stew Leonard's is great for a few reasons: (1) close to my gym so I can scoop up beverages and work out in one go, (2) they have an excellent selection of not only wine but beers and various liquors, as well, and (3) the people are SO helpful and SO nice every time I'm there. I've had a few visits where I'm looking for odd things and they're really patient. One guy even helped me wine pair a 6-course meal based on the dishes I was serving and the wines I was considering. Minus one star because they don't do discounts on cases of liquor or Prosecco. Since it's summer I go through a lot of Aperol and Prosescco making spritzes and it would be nice to have a discount! read more

Prices are extremely fair and service is top notch. I'm always greeted when I walk into the store and I don't have employees "stalking" me trying to put items in my cart like other retailers in the area. The help is there when I need it. The free samples at the tasting bar are always fun and I have learned a lot about wine through spending time at the store. Personally, I find the bourbon/whiskey selection to be a bit small. The beer selection, which will be fine for most, when compared to a Buy Rite or Joe Canal is scaled back.
