Was visiting some friends in Columbia City and wanted to repair a chair for them. Grabbed 10 construction screws from the bulk bin and brought them to the counter, and the very nice guy manning the counter just waved his hand when I asked him how much. This is a neighborhood gem. Recently went to get to Stewart's hoping they could cut wood to replace a bed slat. Mission accomplished in short order at a very reasonable price. Don't be fooled by the smallish (compared to a big box store) barn shaped building down on Rainier this place is located in. If you need anything hardware-ish, and are in the area TRY THIS PLACE FIRST before you continue south on Rainier to that big box place that begins with L. Way more in stock than you think, friendly and helpful employees and they will ORDER something if it is not a product they usually carry. You don't have to hunt down an employee in an apron to try to help you, just wait at the counter. Last week I spent well over a frustrating hour and a half going from one big box store to the other trying to find a six foot track for a folding closet door. I even tried calling first--to L's other big-box competitor in SODO-- and the employee said they had one and after I drove across town I found it was NOT remotely what I needed and the best I could get was a suggestion to drive down to White Center or use two 36-inch tracks (NO, that will not work.) When I got to Stewart (to return an item I did not need) the guy there said he WOULD ORDER ME ONE and it showed up on Monday just like he said it would! And after wasting a lot of time at the same L store today (being told that someone would come help us and nobody ever showed up) and having to buy electrical cable in a package of 15 feet even though we only needed 5 WE WERE ABLE TO GET 5 FEET CUT OFF A ROLL AT STEWART for way cheaper! Honestly, this place is like a welcome vacation back to the good old days when going to a hardware store was not a horrendous ordeal of endless aisles of stuff while trying to find help. TRY STEWART FIRST, my final words of advice, they rock! read more

I did an online order/store pick up for some freezer containers that I couldn't find at Amazon. After no contact for four days I started calling the store. They had no record of the purchase. I needed the items and was able to locate them elsewhere. Eight days later I get a shipping notice. My items were finally being shipped from the warehouse to the store. They should arrive in a few days. When I called Ace online I was put on hold while the contacted the local store. Then I was told that the shipment should arrive in a few days and then the store would ship it back to the warehouse. Once the warehouse received the order, they would start the refund process. It would take 30 days. I asked why I had to wait for the items to 1) arrive at store or 2) arrive at the warehouse since one thing certain I DID NOT HAVE THEM. I complained but it was useless. They should have issued the credit immediately. This is bad business. I will not make this mistake again. read more

Never did get the names of the guys who helped me today, but they were awesome. A perfect mix on hands-on and hands-off for somebody who knows in general what they're looking for but still needs a little help once they've decided on specifics. My boards were cut to length for free after some good non-patronizing advice over what stock would suit my purposes best. No second-guessing but obvious expertise in their work. This is a great business! They really take care of the customer -- four years into our home remodel, Bob has become like part of the family and always helps us find what we need at the best price. Every time we've compared, Stewart's has come out lower priced than the other guys. And the other employees who don't necessarily know us as well take care of us just as much -- from Clayton helping you find what you need in the warehouse to the delivery guys who always tuck the delivery in the most discreet part of the driveway possible. They have more in the store than you would ever imagine from the outside and, if they don't have it, they can usually get it quickly and deliver at no charge (if purchase over $100, I believe). They even opened an account for us so that our contractor could pick up on our behalf and they bill us monthly. This feels like what small business is supposed to be...friendly, real, service-oriented and appreciative of your patronage. Yes, the hours are not as extensive as the big box stores, but I go to Stewart's every chance I get because they make that 100th trip to the hardware store nearly FUN. I can truly say I don't know how we could have made it this far on our remodel without them. read more

Stewart Lumber is "hands down" the best hardware store in Seattle. They have everything you would want and yet they are in no way shape or form like the huge impersonal mega hardware stores in Seattle (you know which ones I mean). You only have to walk a few steps and you enter a store that is a throw back from the days when you got personal service from caring experts. The sales people are friendly and super knowledgeable. The store is brimming with any hardware item you would want or need and, if it is not on the shelf, they can order it for you. Bob is the bomb and Matt is the cat's meow. I needed a few holes drilled for my planters and Matt drilled the holes in no time flat and didn't even charge me! Bob is all smiles and super helpful. The rest of the staff, I don't recall their names, are very nice too. They do business like they did back-in-the-day with personal caring service. They even have an ornate old fashioned cash register and write receipts by hand! I love this place. Go in there sometime and check it out. Like me, you'll return for the best hardware store experience ever. read more
