I'm still reeling from this BAD experience. We used to go here all the time, so last week I had friends in town and decided this would be a great place to show off to them. Wow, has it gone downhill! My friend doesn't like the taste of alcohol, and asked if they could modify one of their craft cocktails, and literally the response was (insert super snobby tone here) "we are a craft cocktail bar, we don't modify our recipes". Ummmm....okay, way to make it awkward. so then we asked for a recommendation, and they brought out this super boozy drink that was not at all even close to what was asked for. The waitress kept turning to the bartender and making fun of us right in front of our face, saying we don't know anything about how craft cocktails work. Have they never had someone request a modification before? I couldn't believe the attitudes of their staff. So we promptly canceled our food orders and left to go down the street where we were lovingly taken care of by a different establishment. I gave 2 stars because I want people to know that this was a real review, and in the past, they have had decent food and cocktails. But whoever's doing the hiring now, clearly has missed the mark. We stopped in to try the 45th Parallel Distillery that is attached to Stillwater Proper. We got there right before they closed and had a good time chatting with the mixologist. She made a great wheat and honey old fashioned and we're able to get some stickers. We will have to check out the distillery in New Richmond, as this was a little hub of theirs. read more

We have been here at couple of times, and always enjoy ourselves. The spot has an amazing selection of cocktails as well as mocktails. I like how not all the drinks options, including mocktails, are not super sweet. The food options are yummy too, especially if you're having high-end bar food. The service is outstanding. Will definitely be back. I came for lunch on a Saturday without a reservation and there is no formal host stand or waiting area so it can be awkward and crammed in the entry way. I would suggest getting reservations. I had the southern fried chicken sandwich and it was fantastic. The pepper jelly added the perfect amount of sweetness. Unfortunately their sandwiches don't come with chips or any side. I ordered the half wedge salad which was also fantastic. Beware that they do charge a 20% service charge that mostly goes to your server so take that into consideration if and when you decide to add any tip as it is not expected here. For my entree I decided to try their Butternut Squash Ravioli made with speck crema, nueske bacon, wild mushroom, thyme, sage, & parm-reggiano. It was solid & definitely something I'd order again. I grabbed a cocktail. It was the Vote 4 Pedro agave spirit, guava, lemon, CO2, habanero, & thai basil. I'd pass on this, as it tasted just like a guava bubbly drink. I would have loved to see more of the other notes of Basil or habenero. It also came in a side class which I didn't love. Stopped in for a quick Mother's Day lunch, we orders the proper burger and the Avacado BLT. Both were great and came with an option of fries or coleslaw. The fries came with a house ranch that was killer. The star of our order was the BLT though which had Asian style pickled veggies which gave it a fun spin. Service was great and it seemed like a place that would be solid for a first date. We'll definitely stop by again next time we're in Stillwater. read more

New Restaurant alert! Stillwater Proper just opened a couple weeks ago. Same owner as LoLo's and Lolitos. Their burger absolutely smacks your tastebuds with an umami explosion that is hard to find. I had the LA Bronson burger add bacon with a side of Togarashi Fries. Burger has carmalized shallots, roasted tomatoes, shiitake and Parmesan crisps. This just jumped into my top 5 of all time. Run, don't walk to Stillwater and try this thing. The "Stilly Cheesesteak" gets an honorable mention. By far the best cheesesteak I've ever had and I will definitely have an internal struggle next time I'm there trying to decide what to get. The ambiance and drinks were fabulous, but everything else fell short. We ordered the bologna, southern fried chicken, and hash browns. The hash browns description sounded way better than they actually were, they were flavorless with 2 slices of unmelted cheese on top. The chicken sandwich was pretty much all breading with a tiny piece of chicken and the french fries were super over seasoned. THE BEST BLT I HAVE EVER HAD. The service was good and I loved the ambiance. It was chill, fun, and delicious. I got the avocado BLT and when I say I have never had a better BLT- I mean it. The pickled carrots on it and the tangy mayo added the perfect amount of crunch and flavor. THE SOURDOUGH????? TOASTED TO PERFECTION. It wasn't too soft, wasn't too hard to where it scratched the top of my mouth. The fries were good and crispy and not too salty or soft. I have trouble eating in public anxiety wise, but this was the first thing in a long time that I kept wanting to eat. It was so good and I'm going to think about this sandwich for weeks and I'll miss it when I go back home to Texas. Stillwater Proper blew me away. I had the grilled cheese and the 99 problems but a peach ain't one. It's going to be hard when I go there again to try something new since those were absolutely fantastic. The staff was amazing! The decorations were beautiful and fit together super well. All of their food and ingredients are locally sourced and they seem to really put the best ingredients in the food. If you are thinking of trying this restaurant, do it. I had the walleye entry and it was terrible. Likely frozen. Breading was very thick, retained the oil and was cooked past golden into dark brown. I was excited to come here based on the reviews but overall left unsatisfied. The food was good - not great, not bad, just in the middle. However, my main issue is the service. Truly, I haven't had service this bad in quite awhile: everything took incredibly long (and we were only one of two dinner tables with plenty of staff just lingering around). We ordered simple sandwiches (BLT and bologna) and it took at least half an hour. Our waitress checked on us once, even when we were out of water and it was impossible to get her attention. What a gem! We had a great lunch here. The food is excellent, we had the Mediterranean bowl and the Blue Fin Tuna bowl. Both were well prepared with high quality ingredients. The tuna was very lightly seared, a nice extra that many places don't do. Our server was knowledgeable and provided the right amount of attention, there when we needed him without hovering. Our favorite place on this trip. Employees all great and friendly. The drinks are phenomenal and they basically use all Mn, Ia and Wi spirits too. Kinda scary when you're ordering $12 drinks. Nobody wants to make a mistake. Both my bourbon & gin based drinks were good. I would be happy to drink both again. Great service on a busy night.
