Nice restaurant with good food, good service, and a great bar. Decent steak and they make a good Old Fashioned. We started with the Blackened Beef. I love Chimichurri and a horseradish sauce. This dish has both. Honestly, this might have been my meal highlight. We also ordered a Caesar Salad with our starter and no complaints. For our main we shared the 6oz filet and the Shrimp Scampi. The steak was tender and cooked just as we asked. Wish it had a little more seasoning but nothing to complain about. The Scampi felt like it was lacking something. I would have thought that the mushrooms and leeks in a white wine cream sauce would have added plenty to this dish but it seemed to be a bit bland. We also ordered the asparagus with hollandaise sauce and we enjoyed it. All in all we were happy with our visit. I will definitely be back to sit at the bar for some drinks. This place is truly an iconic beautiful piece of history. I met friends for a drink and ended up staying for dinner at the bar. The service is impeccable and the staff is super friendly. Every one of our drinks was made with complete care and were super delicious. I ordered the filet medallions with fries. They came with a beautiful bernaise sauce and I added their homemade chunky blue cheese to dip the fries in. I can't describe enough how beautiful of a bar, restaurant area and hotel this is. They have valet parking if you're looking to treat yourself or street parking available nearby (free on Sundays). Located within the hotel, I always encourage first timers to take a stroll around the hotel lobby. They really just don't make hotels like this anymore! The restaurant itself is quintessential St. Paul...the perfect blend of tradition with elevated takes on the classics! While it may feel a bit upscale, I promise the menu and the staff are just as approachable as any other establishment! This really is a place for everyone! I had the Black and Blue burger, which featured a yummy patty topped with caramelized onions and Bleu cheese! Good portion size and flavor. Mushroom and Swiss burger: ordered medium rare plus and got medium. Good quality meat. Garlic aioli wasn't too garlicky. Surprised the mushrooms were whole, maybe crimini. Fries: eh. Thinner than I like, well salted. I asked for a side of brown or spicy mustard and they brought me three! Went to the St Paul Grill to celebrate my in-laws 50th anniversary! Yay! It's one of their most beloved fine dining restaurants on the east side of the twin cities. I've been here 3 other times but those times were roughly 8+ years ago. What a beautiful hotel and restaurant with old fashioned elegance. We valeted the car and arrived a little early so we could indulge in a little drink from the bar. It was quite busy for a Saturday night but we found a 4 top table by the bar area. It took a bit to be greeted by a waitress but we patiently waited since it was so busy. When we finally did order drinks - it took roughly 20+ mins to get them and before we even got them, I received notification that our table was ready. I know we were pretty bummed to not be able to enjoy our first sips and drinks by the bar. They seemed a little short staffed for a busy Saturday night. Bar was packed! I also wish the waitress would've said, we are backed up right now or I was also thinking that she forgot to put in our order. I ordered the ultimate chocolate martini. It was very good. I also read the online cocktail menu that said generous portion (martinis) so I thought my martini would come with the leftover in the shaker (generous portion). Also the menu online isn't the same menu in the restaurant. The prices have increased substantially from the menu on their website. As well as the cocktail options. We were seated in the back area of the restaurant and Brandon was our server. The service was okay but not over the top special service that you would expect from a place like the St Paul Grill or that I have seen and received in the past. For example when the main entrees were coming out, our bread plates, salad plates should've been taken by then cause it was a smaller table with not a lot of room for lots of dishes. Or when they kindly brought out a crème brûlée as a celebration for my in-laws 50th - no one asked if we wanted any additional drinks, etc. so when my mom in law ordered a coffee, I was about to say "can I please order a decaf" but he had already left the table. Once I did ask for my decaf, he didn't ask if I wanted creamer or milk and/or sugar....which I needed. Also my water was empty at some point during dinner and I was trying to get someone's attention for some more. These are things that at a dining restaurant of this caliber are usually so on top of. A bit disappointing to say the least. The filet was okay but way too salty for my liking and the mix of mushrooms weren't my fav. The hash browns were okay. Nothing really blew me away except for the kind gesture of the creme brûlée to celebrate their momentous occasion. Also I love looking at a menu online before going to the restaurant and it completely differs from the menu in the restaurant. Prices are different, options are different. Beware! read more

We have always loved St. Paul Grill. This last visit, we all agreed it was a bit off. Food: overall, it was ok... the salmon salad has changed. Used to be a nice piece of salmon. Now it's random end pieces. The Brussels sprouts were actually surprisingly mushy, so nobody really ate it. Mashed potatoes are good. Steak is good. The best part about coming here really is the bar now... service at the bar is attentive and drinks are great. Service at the table was super rushed. We felt like we had to grab our server's attention before she ran off every time. Ambience: always a nice vibe inside. Comfy booths. Warm and traditional type of space. It's a convenient place to come if you're going to a show. Not sure if we will be back to table seating. Would go for the bar, though. read more

Second time this has happened at this restaurant. The service is terrible. We were seated and waited 20 minutes, no one approached us, took a drink order or acknowledged us. We got up and left. The first time this happened we hunted down our server. It's not my job to find a waitress to serve me at a restaurant. Do better. This is an expensive resturant. Tried St Paul Grill while on a work trip in St. Paul. It was a late dinner on the day I arrived so I just sat at the bar since I was by myself. The ambiance was great, my server was very friendly and nice to chat with. She recommended a few items on the menu since it was my first time. I got one of their steaks. Steak was great but a bit smaller than I expected. I did get only 3oz but because it was a thicker cut it was a bit surprising to see it on such a massive plate. Tasted great though. I also had a salad which you can't go wrong with a Cesar and mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes were ok, wasn't a huge fan. Half portion is pretty big though! So unless you're ordering for a group half should be more than enough for even 2-3 people as a side. read more

We got lucky and found some on-street parking a block away. Valet parking is available at the hotel if you have a hard time finding parking. FOOD: Complimentary Bread (4/5): served warm with crispy crust and soft spongy center. Filet Mignon (3/5) it was delicious but there was no wow factor compared to other steakhouses. Wild Rice Soup (4/5): extra creamy and so filling. I wish I had ordered the cup instead of the bowl. Hash Browns (5/5): perfectly crispy and PLENTIFUL; could have fed 4 or 5 people. The service here is fantastic! My coworker and I stopped by about 15 minutes before the kitchen closed (I know, I know!) and we weren't rushed one bit. I only ended up getting the Apple Crisp dessert and the Carrot Cake (haven't tried it yet, got it to go) and my co worker order the pork chop. She loved her meal and we both really enjoyed the Apple Crisp with ice cream. The scotch menu is plentiful. The restaurant reminded me a bit of a speakeasy and I loved that. We only had a snack and drinks at the bar. The restaurant was closed by the time we arrived. The bartender was friendly and helpful. Our server, Elle, was great - 5 Star service. She was attentive, friendly, and had good recommendations. Didn't care for the surprise "4% hospitality fee" on the bill. Hard to tell, but I think the base tax was calculated on top of that 4% fee. I didn't see the 4% fee on the menu and no one mentioned it. Unfortunately, I only saw it the next day on the receipt. As there was no entertainment and I'm pretty sure every bar includes a server, I'm guessing this is the credit card fee virus infecting some establishments. Regardless, this was the highest % I have experienced thus far. As credit cards don't charge establishments more than 3%, pretty disappointing. A management issue, not a server issue. I'm just tired of it. If you want more money out of my pocket, just raise your price and then let me choose. read more

What can I say! It's beautiful and historic in this location! First things first though, parking can be hard as there's isn't much street parking, so look for a ramp. Anyways, we made reservations and I'm glad we did because it was busy! Upon pur arrival, we were greeted by friendly staff that sat us quickly. We were given water immediately and our waitress was on the spot! Our drinks were good and we started with some wild rice soup which was delicious. Our main course was incredible (pictures provided)! My pasta definitely tasted fresh and salmon was perfect. My girlfriend loved her lamb chops. They weren't quite medium as she requested, but it's no big deal. Have been coming to this place for years on business and always such a wonderful, old school, classic and classy atmosphere. Tonight I arrived at the hotel and sat at the bar for a quick dinner and loved that the service for someone solo and not at a table was the same top notch experience. Wes was a gem of a bartender, asking your name, providing his, inquiring what you were interested in from wines to food and offering suggestions, super attentive, and adding this personal touch to my beverage. This is a GREAT, classy, but pricey restaurant and bar inside the historic St. Paul Hotel. They are located on the first floor. The food was very good! Again, pricey, but you get what you pay for. The bar is really cool. One wall is covered in photos of famous people from Minnesota. The rest of the back bar wall is all of their liquors on. Ice shelves with mirrors behind it. WES is the bar tender there and he is amazing!! After a really crappy day, I went into the bar, sat down and asked Wes to make me a cosmo or martini and just surprise me. I love lemon drop martinis and that's what he made me! He gave me excellent advice on my dinner choice and made a killer chocolate martini too, with my name in it! Six of us had reservations and they sat us next to an emergency exit door and we were literally freezing the whole time. Would not move us upon request. I went up to my room and came back down wearing a coat and they did bring a blanket for another person at our table. Not the atmosphere you would expect for paying a fortune for dinner. Other than that, the food was mostly good...the sea bass and hash browns were delicious...the filet could have been better...the scalloped potatoes were excellent. The ambiance was stunning with Rice Park all lit up for the holiday. For 18 years we have come to St . Paul Grill for a special holiday dinner and it has been lovely. This week was a huge disappointment. We had a reservation for 6:00. We ordered drinks and waited 50 minutes for the drinks. During this time we twice requested the bread basket. Our order was taken and we received our food before the drinks arrived . We ordered both soup and salad and they both arrived at the same time.. giving us no time to leisurely enjoy either. The main course arrived about 3 minutes after the soup and salad was served . The waitress was very good at making excuses for the problems but only rechecked on our table once. The restaurant was not busy(open tables). I think it is time to look elsewhere to celebrate special occasions. read more

The spinach salad was also very good. The 6 oz filet mignon was good, but nothing spectacular. Sides are purchased separately and are meant for multiple people, our table got the cauliflower and potatoes au gratin. Potatoes weren't very creamy, but they were hot and cheesy so not much to complain about. The cauliflower however was barely cooked, and we had to carve with a steak knife to try and get a piece. It needed probably 20 more minutes in the oven, and was overwhelmed by the flavor of anise. We didn't order dessert, it was a positive experience but not the best food I've had. read more

The lunch menu offers soups, salads, burgers, chicken pot pie, fish and chips, crab cake, sandwiches, and Charlies (which appears to be sliders). The basket of warm complimentary bread was a nice way to start the meal. BLT $19 - I wasn't a fan of the thick cut bacon because it was hard and made it tough to take bites out of the sandwich. Comes with choice of hand-cut fries or potato chips. I prefer my fries to be crispier. Enjoyed an evening at the Grill with a group of ten. Our server was friendly, attentive and helpful. The chicken wild rice soup was good. My husband had the lobster bisque and thought it was good too. For dinner I had the charred salmon salad. It included three charred salmon filets which were very tasty! My husband enjoyed his walleye, and we both loved the hash browns we shared (and still had plenty leftover to bring home for breakfast.) We ordered brandy alexanders for dessert and they were "ok"... Are you looking for a fancy, classy, traditional restaurant with a gorgeous view? If you're a meat or seafood eater, or perhaps just wants some outstanding cocktails, this is your place. The setting is pretty any time of year, but during the winter holidays, especially after a fresh snow it is breathtaking. The dining room looks out onto Rice Park, and the trees in the park and the property are lit up during the winter months. It is hard not to feel festive and cozy. Given the prices on the menu, you will want more than just good vibes. Thankfully, it is hard to have a bad meal here. I have been here several times a year over the past few decades and have never had a bad meal. It is challenging for vegetarians or vegans however. This is a steak and seafood place. As a pescatarian I can't comment on the steak, though my dining companions always like the steaks. Apparently the mini hamburgers are excellent. I adore the scallops. Perfectly cooked, perfect texture over a bed of savory risotto. The charred salmon salad is also good. If you like traditional cocktails with a twist, the bar can't be beat. The wait staff is professional and the service is excellent. I have only two disappointments with the place- 1) I really wish they would add a vegan item or two to the menu. 2) I really wish they would bring back their berry dessert. A Classic gem, with its vintage decor and warm welcoming atmosphere, is a testament to the timeless art of hospitality and fine dining. Every time my wife and I visit from California we dine here. On New Year's Eve we split the 34 oz porterhouse amongst 5 people, cooked to perfection and everyone was satisfied and full. We also mixed in Au Gratin Potatoes and various salads. The bar also makes great cocktails, there was even a Blanton's Bourbon availability. The St. Paul Grill is more than just a place to eat; it's a sanctuary for those who appreciate the classics. We scored two spots at the bar and enjoyed our margarita and moscow mule very much. I highly recommend getting their warm cheese and bread board to start, YUM! We had a great dining experience at the St Paul Grill! It has an upscale old steakhouse look with dark wood and white linen tablecloths. The entire staff is amazing from the minute you walk in the door (they even changed our table to give us extra room for a baby in a car seat). Our server was so nice and helpful, and gave us great recommendations. Our group had the shrimp cocktail, NY strip, chicken (this was huge), crab cakes and sides of hashbrowns and corn succotash - and everyone enjoyed their food. I had the halibut, which was perfectly cooked and full of flavor - and also an espresso martini which was one of the best I've had! We'll definitely be back! read more

After a crazy night of bad luck we ended up here. Our server kevin was fantastic and he was onto of things. The old hotel had a warm cozy feel to it and brought you back in time. We were greeted and seated quickly and took some time to review the menu. Kevin answered all of our questions and we both ended up getting thier aged fillet mignon for dinner and a side of Mac and cheese and the warm cheese plate. The cheese plate came out first and the bread provided had a rich garlic taste with butter that tingled the taste buds. The addition of thier chutney invigorated the senses and the cheese omg was soo fantastic if left us wanting more. The main course was next. I ordered mine rare and omg cooked to perfection. Generally I order a rare steak and the chef decides that I don't really know what I want and takes the liberty of making it medium rare. This chef did it right and the steak mooed as I cut into the tender flesh. The other steak was medium rare and it was also perfect. You can see the beautiful rings of colors like the rings on an old tree after being cut down. The steak cut very clean and smooth with so little effort that an elderly person could do it with ease. The Mac and cheese was fantastic and full of cheesy goodness and was not like Velveeta cheese used at other establishments. The wine list is very extensive as always and so is the whiskey menu. The food did not dissapoint. Kevin boxed the leftovers and was happy to assist. Wow. I don't think I've ever written a review like this. Terrible visit last night (Saturday, July 27) to the St. Paul Grill. We arrived at 5:45 and our server, Robin, knew we had tickets to the 7:30 performance of Six at the Ordway, and that one of our guests used a walker. Robin recommended that we leave the restaurant just after 7. Robin was attendant enough at the beginning - wine served promptly, as well as the bread basket. At the 45 minute point she stopped by to apologize that our food was taking so long, but she assured us that the Manager said "5-7 minutes" for our entrees. Finally at 7:10 with no food and no assurance that it would arrive soon, we had to leave. So sad that such a storied restaurant had such terrible management (whether the Executive Chef or the restaurant Manager, or both). We won't go back to ST. Paul Grill before a play unless we are seated at 2.5 hours before performance, and then we will linger as long as we need to before heading to the Ordway. read more
