One word - exquisite. I've been playing my whole life and I'm an actively gigging musician. I grew up with a baby grand in my home and planned to purchase my own instrument when I grew up. That day finally came a few years ago at Stilwell Pianos. Acoustic pianos are incredibly complex analog instruments that are sensitive to changes in temperature, moisture, and numerous other factors. Because of this, it's impossible to pick a piano just by brand and model if you're specific about the action (touch) and intonation (sound). For experienced players, you have to play it to know if it's the one. I went to several stores in town. Most were staffed with pushy sales guys trying to land a Steinway sale using every trick in the book to create urgency and assume the sale. This bullshit doesn't fly with me and ruins the journey. I first visited Stilwell at their old location. Michael introduced himself, inquired what I was looking for, and let me explore on my own. No tactics, no pressure selling, etc. It took probably 4 trips over 6ish months before he had the right inventory for what I wanted. The buying process was straightforward from there and they used Max Piano Moving (best guys in town) for transport. As a classical pianist and an amateur piano technician I have to say that Stilwell pianos is one of the most honest Piano Stores I've ever worked with. Like any used piano, there are always things that are great about the piano and some things that need to be fixed or worked on. Amongst their fantastic selection of serious pianos I have found that they have been very straightforward with the quality of the instruments and what has been done to rebuild/restore on them and at the same time they are honest with you when there are things that need to be fixed or replaced on an instrument before you buy. It's not a common thing to see in this industry and I was very happy to see that kind of honesty. A close friend of mine was looking to purchase a grand piano with Stillwell and I helped her pick one iut, and in doing so I had a hard time picking one specific instrument out of the many great options they had available. Push forward to about six months and I decided to upgrade to a newer Steinway model B and I can honestly say with my knowledge of these instruments that I received a fantastic deal for an instrument that will satisfy my needs for many many years to come. If you are in the market for a piano, even if you DON'T live in the Mesa, AZ area, check these guys out. I live in Houston, TX, but I had the opportunity to connect with Michael Stilwell, the owner of Stilwell Pianos. Stilwell Pianos will deliver and their estimated delivery cost is easily found and clearly labeled on their website. I am in the market for a baby grand/grand piano. I currently have a Yamaha upright that has been in the family for 35+ years. I went to a local piano store in Houston and was ready to plop down $15,000 for a brand new baby grand Ritmueller. After talking to a friend who is a pianist, she advised me to look at used pianos on craiglist or other local piano stores. I actually found listings for pianos on craigslist that took me to Stilwell. I have to say, I adore this business and their business ethics. Stilwell Pianos also owns a piano technician school so they know pianos inside and out. Think of it as buying a rare, vintage car from a master mechanic. They really are technicians trying to find the right piano for you instead of a piano salesman trying to make commission off of you. The website is very helpful. They have videos on many of their pianos, so definitely check this out. They also have a YouTube channel so I urge you to look at those videos as well. After meticulously combing through their website and YouTube videos, I decided to contact Michael via email. He was very responsive and we were able to set up a time to meet via Zoom. (Side note on the videos: Some of their videos do not have the name of pieces performed. I feel that you should always give credit where credit is due. It would be nice to have information on the pieces performed by their pianists.) I had narrowed down what I needed/wanted in a piano so Michael was able to focus on a handful of pianos within my price range that met my needs. It is true that Stilwell Pianos does NOT pressure you into buying. Our meeting was about 90 minutes long and it was much more informative than him trying to sell me something big and expensive. I really appreciate his grace and candidness. He played on each piano so that we could hear the sound quality. He went through the history of the piano maker as well as the piano itself. He really listened to what we needed. For one of the pianos that I was considering, he actually told me that I will probably find a better deal off craigslist. I'm not comfortable buying something this expensive off craigslist especially because I don't know pianos well enough. I did not visit the store in person so I cannot comment on the physical characteristics of the store. From the videos, I wish I lived in the area so I could go visit in person. The store looks like so much fun. Who doesn't want to skateboard around expensive pianos? Final verdict: I HIGHLY recommend giving these guys a chance. Contact Michael or the store manager. Talk to these guys. Set up a virtual walk-through of the store. Did I buy a piano from Stilwell Pianos? I am still trying to decide which piano is right for me. There were so many great choices! For a purchase this large, I will have to sleep on it. If I do purchase from Stilwell, I will definitely update this review. I bought a piano at Stilwell Pianos in December. My wife and I couldn't be happier with our purchase. We wanted a nice piano, but couldn't pay full price for a brand new one. A high quality, well tended, used piano is half the price, but just about as good. I also appreciated the feeling of the showroom. I never felt like I was being sold anything. Purchased stunning unit that was delivered same day by in-house delivery and they set it up and cleaned prior to leaving. We were very impressed with their services -- the technician was prompt, efficient, and gave his input on small repairs we could eventually consider for our piano. After (quite literally) years of searching for a piano, we finally found "the one" at Stilwell Pianos. We purchased our "well loved" Baldwin under somewhat of an unusual circumstance - she was still in refurbishment and was, therefore, not ready to come home. However, the refurbishment went quickly, we were frequently updated with pictures and info, our questions were answered quite honestly, and we always felt welcome to drop in anytime. Everyone at Stilwell was knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to work with. We never felt pressured to purchase; they care about their customers and their work. We hired their recommended mover, who was friendly, prompt, and very careful with our wood floors and our piano. We also hired their recommended tuner, who was also friendly, professional, and honest - we will be calling him back for regular maintenance.
