Food = 4.0 Service = 5.0 Ambiance = 4 Nice place in Scranton PA that gave off neighborhood/family place vibe. The food was decent save for the Chicken Franchese which I was told was not up to par. I did not have any so I can't give a personal assessment. The others at my table had the Stirnaburger which I was told was good. But they wished the bun was toasted better. Others had soup and Fried Shrimp which I was told was very good. I had the Turkey Rueben which I had not had in a long time. I must say this one was spot on. Well put together and just about right for me. It was delicious! Lastly, I must compliment our server Madison who was delightful young lady. Charming and well mannered. Stirna's is one of the best restaurants in North Scranton and is always available for events as well. Kathy, the owner, has been an important part of our community since she moved to this area and purchased the restaurant. Her menu is very diverse but tends to lend itself more to American types of goods like roast beef mashed potatoes, etc. Come visit the restaurant and you will agree with me, I think. read more

I just had take out from Stirna's and they exceeded my expectations. The turkey with gravy was delicious. They included a surprise brownie desert on the house which was wonderful. Been going here for as long as I can remember. Love that you can have a family dinner with small children, a work dinner, or a date night all at the same location. They have solid signatures on their menu from the lemon chicken dinner to boneless wings and crab bisque. We normally also have something from their daily specials with the shrimp asparagus risotto app, flat breads, and (in the summer) fish tacos being my favs! Nice place for American food. Parking lot on the side, which is great when you consider the driving frenzy along Market Street! The neighborhood looks dated with some closed businesses in the area, but Stirna's is a traditional kind of place, especially for families or a group. Vegetables taste fresh. I am told by the present owner, Catherine, that Stirna's has been in the same location for 109 years. That's pretty amazing. She is the sole owner of this establishment since 1980. And she says she runs it very passionately, almost bulldog-like. The staff here is a reflection of the owner's verve. They are quick, friendly and always multitasking. The two I came in contact with were Alli & Melissa. Nice work, girls. I was attending a repast with some 70 patrons. The whole event was run very tastefully and super smoothly. There were two choices to pick from: turkey dinner and a roast beef dinner..... drinks and dessert included. I had a turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, string beans w/cranberry sauce. I opted to omit the gravy, which others said was excellent. The fresh salad was unique, a sauce atop I felt was great. This was the first time I have eaten at this place. The drinks are great and fromour company, I highly recomend the sour drinks. (Wiskey, Amaretto etc.) I had the blackened Tuna which was excellent. Others had the fish and chips and stuffed flounder. All said it was food. The wait staff was extremely attentive and kept our drinks filled. We did not have to wait for anything. Horrible!!! My husband and I were in Scranton 2 weeks ago and after taking care of business we were both very hungry and decided to go here for dinner. After seeing 4.5 star review I was sold. When we walked in we had no idea which way to go, right or left. We went left to an empty dinning room which should have been our 1st warning. A waitress came up and seated us. She came to take our order and I asked for the chicken parmigiano. She then asked me, what sauce would you like? Well this was an absolute first for me. I paused and she said vodka or tomato? I said tomato of course. Never heard of a restaurant serving chiken vodka parm. Her next question should have sent me out the door, but like I said we were starving. She asked what noodles I would like. I was speechless. Who serves noodles with an Italian dish?! I was so dumbfounded that I had nothing to say so she said, penne, spaghetti, and so on. I was so happy she named PASTAS instead of noodles. A waitress should have more knowledge than that. Now for the food. Our appetizer was buffalo chicken bites that were so over cooked that I couldn't even put my fork through them. They were hard to chew and tasteless but my husband who apparently was hungrier then me, asked me not to send them back. Our dinners came out and I was extremely disappointed with the sauce. It was extremely sweet! But my husband's meal was even worse. He ordered fish and chips and on his first taste of the batter, he said it was tasty. But when he cut it open the fish was raw. He sent it back to the kitchen. The waitress came back from the kitchen and told us that the cook said this is how it's cooked. And if he made another it would be cooked the same. The fish instead of being white and flakey, was greyish in color and mushy. What cook doesn't know this? I honestly couldn't believe his response. So they chicken was beyond over cooked and the fish was raw. My husband was so disappointed that he didn't order anything else. If you're in the area I suggest you go somewhere else to eat. Not sure why this place has good reviews but my guess is it's either the locals or the employees leaving them. No wonder the dinning was empty! read more

Stirna's is a Scranton institution and my family has been having its funerals and other family functions there for generations. Recently, my stepfather died and I needed a place to hold his funeral luncheon. Catherine Gavin was amazing! She helped me put the menu together and even called me on a Sunday to check in and go over the plans for the luncheon on Monday afternoon. When we arrived, everything was ready and the staff was so attentive. They gave us space when we needed it and nobody had to wait for a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. The food was outstanding! We had roast beef au jus, chicken strips in garlic and butter, penne ala vodka, green beans almondine, salad and rolls and butter. Everyone was so impressed! In fact, we had some leftovers and our guests loved the food so much that many took some home in takeout containers! The price for the catering was more than reasonable for the quality of the food and the level of service we received. I highly recommend this restaurant! The next time I am in Scranton, I am going to make it a point to have dinner at Stirna's! read more

First time coming here for a baby shower. The restaurant has a very rustic classy feel to it. The food was absolutely delicious. Must say this is the first shower of any type where I couldn't get enough of the food. The food was served buffet style with the following choices: crab bisque or chicken soup, mini cheese (and chicken) steak sandwiches, mini turkey sandwiches with cranberry mayo (this was my favorite sandwich, I went for seconds, the cran mayo matched the turkey perfectly), mini roasted veggies sandwiches, balsamic cheese tortellini salad (also amazing), and two salads, one regular and one with orange slices. I have been here previously and the food was probably a 3 star. I had ordered the Turkey Reuben sandwich which consisted of about 3 slices of Turkey, a bit of coleslaw on rye bread. It would have fit into a no name kindergarten fliptop sandwich bag like a 5 year old would eat. Served on a saucer plate like you get for your bread. Got 2 slices of pickles with it. No chips or fries all for the kindergarten price of $9.50. REALLY I SAID.... they should be embarrassed to serve this sandwich. Usually Reuben's are piled high whether Turkey or corned beef. By the way the club sandwiches are 12.95 what a RIP off. Go across the street to Samarios it is tastier, cheaper and better portions. read more

My wife and I stopped in here on a whim before we visited the Houdini Museum. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in, classy bar with a restaurant side, a very cool American bar and grill. Awesome food, my wife had the Pumpkin Ravioli which she said was amazing, and I had the New York Strip Steak, great seasoning, a very huge piece of steak too. The hostess came up to us after we payed the bill and we chatted for a few minutes and it turns out she runs the bar. Cathy is a wonderful host, lots of fun to talk to. I was at a private gathering where Stirna's was doing the catering, the roast beef in gravy was so tender, to die for. And the vegetable medley, tasted like it was just picked from the garden. The crab cakes were small in size and could have been crisper. But they were seasoned well. Entrees come with an app and dessert with coffee or tea, which is nice.
