Monday night in Hermann means most restaurants are closed so we felt fortunate find Stone Hill Winery open till 8. We arrived around 7:30 and found few people there. The Chardonelle wine was excellent as was my wife's salmon. I ordered the goulash special. Two problems. The noodles under my goulash were not fresh. Tough and tasteless. And the sourkraut side was not sour. They gave us $3.00 off the tab which was nice. The moral to the story don't go in close to closing time and order the special. read more

I've never really been to a bad winery, but Stone Hill was picture perfect. Located in the small town of Hermann, it's a great weekend trip from St. Louis. We were there on a not too busy day, which was nice, and had a small tour group. Our guide was very amiable and knowledgeable and the tour was short and sweet. It ended with a wine tasting by a very personable bartender. They have a nice sized gift shop with wine, cheese, crackers, and miscellaneous souvenirs. And I agree with everyone else - make sure to try the Vignole! read more

Beautiful site at the top of a hill. I find their wines just ok, and they are readily available at cheaper prices even at places like Shop n Save in the St. Louis metro area. I do like their Cream Sherry and bought a bottle of that. Food in the adjacent restaurant is sort of German-American, but decent - beware that it can be crowded and service can lag accordingly. read more

Definitely worth the visit. There are a lot of wineries in Hermann but going through the winery tour at Stone Hill makes this one better than the rest. It has a rich history and delicious wine. They have multiple tasting rooms and they can accommodate very large groups. Their wine story/gift shop area is huge and has all sorts of neat things to go along with your wine purchase. There is plenty of outdoor seating and they frequently have live music or other neat events going on. If you're in Hermann, you should definitely go to Stone Hill. read more

One of the biggest wineries in the state, and for good reason, Stone Hill offers a wide variety of wines that will suit almost any taste. The winery offers tours ever half hour that offer some history of the winery and a brief overview of their wine making processes. These tours are pretty cheap ($2.50 per person) and are very interesting. During certain times of the year they offer much more expensive tours that are focused on the depth process of wine making that includes tastings throughout the tour. Stone Hill is also one of a few wineries in the Hermann area that still offers free tastings. Due to the high cost of providing samples many of the wineries have begun to charge for tastings to recoup these costs (I heard a rumor that the tastings at the Adam Putcha winery were upwards of $70,000 in the last year that they offered free tastings), so it was nice not to have to shell out for once. Our tasting adventure was lead by an older gentleman named Ray, who was absolutely endearing! He tells jokes and chats while he pours sample after sample and some how still works in serving and pair suggestions for each wine. It never felt like he was reciting some story or sales pitch, it was just friendly conversation. We enjoyed their Concord as well as the Late Harvest Vignoles (an ice wine). read more

Visited Hermann for the first time and loved the restaurant so much we ate there twice. The first time we did not have a reservation. They worked us in after only 10 minutes. The second time we did have a reservation and were seated immediately. We had a steak special that was cooked just right and the pork snitzle with jaeger sauce. Oh my! So tender and delicious. The Hermannsberger wine was perfect with it. Could not resist the black forest cake which was moist and chocolately with a whipped cream frosting. Everything was wonderful! read more

Wine tasting was like a frat party ; whomever speaks loudest shall receive the next glass . Ouch. Oh, you did want the red, right? We did not have the opportunity to inquire about the vintage of the wines, due to the atmosphere. I would estimate the ages to be about two weeks. Go elsewhere for wine. read more

Had nieces and nephews visiting all the way from Atlanta, so I couldn't let them down. Figured a winery would be a fun thing (since I had never been from St. Louis, and since they all are in their early 20's and therefore still get really excited about drinking). Stone Hill was fun! We all had a good time. The wine isn't crazy good but it's decent. The experience was what really made it special- just a nice change of pace from life in St. Louis. read more

This was my first visit to Hermann and Stone Hill and it did not disappoint. It took about one hour 30 mins from West County to get there which was a very pretty drive. The winery has the most beautiful views and scenery. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty busy with bus loads of people. There's a large gift shop and a few wine tasting rooms . We ate at the restaurant on the grounds which is an old stable called 'Vintage Restaurant ' it was very unique. Considering how busy it was there was only a 45 minute wait . Plenty of typical German choices and a few American dishes . The bill for four people including two bottles of wine was $95 which I thought was not bad at all. Most definitely worth a trip!! The staff were pleasant but not outstanding. The only thing I would not recommend was the spinach mandarin salad ... too much spinach and just a few manadarins .... more items need to be added !! read more

It has been awhile since I have been to Stone Hill. I had forgotten just how much I enjoy their winery. The tour of the facility is a must if you have never been, or never taken the tour. The history of this winery is amazing, and how they survived during prohibition. I know when you talk about American wines California is the gold standard. But several Missouri wines, and wines from Stone Hill have stood toe to toe and competitions and the medal's to prove it. As far as type's of wines go they have a broad spectrum to please just about anyone's taste. From dry whites and red's to sweet wines that would even please a southerner. Just head for the tasting bar and sample some wines. Find one you can enjoy then sit outside and enjoy your day. If you are up to it they have a restaurant attached that is absolutely fabulous. Next time you are in Hermann I would highly recommend stopping in and visiting. Everyone there is extremely nice and want to make sure you have a good experience. If you are not to sure about wines... ask! They are happy to help you out and are very knowledgeable. One of the best wineries in Missouri. read more

LOVED the tasting-I hope if you go that Roy is working, he was hilarious, and really picked out the wines that suit your tastes. Generous pours, and I think he would have been happy to let us sample all day-there's no limit on samples here as far as I could tell. Recommend trying the ice wine and the cream sherry. read more

LOVE their wine, first off. We came after having a good time touring their smaller facility in Branson, MO and really liked the tour here. Our guide seemed a bit standoffish at first like she was reading a script, but by the end of the tour she was awesome! I would recommend it to anyone. The tasting is fabulous as well, very casual and fun. No one here seems rude or snooty and the atmosphere is top notch. Beautiful grounds and buildings, impeccably well-kept. Tasted a couple of "decent" wines during the tasting, but nothing that wowed me. I must admit, though, my friends and I had a wonderful time as the staff is extremely entertaining. We had our second visit to Stone Hill this past weekend. From 4 years ago, it seems much more commercialized. The place was full of bachelorette parties and screaming girls. :( The tour was closed due to rain. We decided to take a drive through Missouri wine country and found ourselves at the Stone Hill Winery. We were able to take the tour which was nice. The winery has a long rich history. They actually still have some of the equipment the original owners were able to save during prohibition. The tasting room was a ton of fun thanks to Ray. We visited this winery twice during our visit in Hermann. The tour guide was funny and very interesting. If you go I do recommend purchasing both the dessert pairing tasting and the regular tasting. The dessert was so yummy. We had great service at the tastings and we learned a lot about the wines. We had dinner at the restaurant but that is for another review. I absolutely love Stone Hill Winery. This past time I was able to take my parents on a weekday, which I would highly recommend. I typically only come here during the weekends and this place is just a lot less crowded and more personal during the week. Similar to all of my other trips, we did the tour. The tour is completely free and takes about 30 minutes. It is definitely worth it as you learn a lot about the winery. They also take you on a tour of their cellar, which I believe Stone Hill has the biggest underground cellar in North America. At the end of the tour, you can purchase tokens for a wine tasting. The wine tasting is reasonably priced. You can try 6 wines for $5. I appreciate that they will let you share this tasting, which is what I always do. In terms of their wines, their sweeter wines are much better than their drier wines. We almost always pick up a case because of the discount. Our case this time included several bottles of the Cream Sherry (which is super cheap compared to other wineries), the Concord Grape (because it was 25% off and super cheap), and the Kickin Kolada (again, super cheap and 25% off). My parents love sweet wines and thought that the Moscato was fantastic (so we made sure to pick them up a bottle). The staff here are really friendly. They also have some snacks, including cheese curds and flavored popcorn that you can buy while you wait for the tour. Finally, the beautiful views right outside the winery make this a must-stop. We will continue to visit Stone Hill for years to come. read more

This is one of the more popular wineries and the day we went (Saturday), you could tell. In the tasting room, it was unbelievably crowded, people were pushing me and my friends out of the way to squeeze in, basically jumping ahead of us for tasting. I couldn't take the crowd, or people being rude so I walked out of there for air. The restaurant was a much better experience. read more

Try the Vignole wine....delicious. A beautiful setting. You must take the tour in the fall, it is very informative, interesting and worthwhile. Herman is a nice little town to visit. Lots of shops, but don't go on the Octoberfest weekends. That is when the buses come of people who just want to do the Mardi Gras thing. It needs to stay a quaint little town but german heritage. Visit during the other months and you can enjoy the experience. read more

This is the best tasting experience we found in Hermann. The tour included with the tasting is a nice touch, and allows you to soak up the history of the vineyard. It's lovely to be able to learn about the grapes you're tasting and the families who've made them. Having the tasting room in the stunning home previously used by the families who've lived on the vineyard is an exceptional touch. The antebellum mansion itself is a tourist destination. There are multiple tasting bars on the first floor, so despite the crowd, our tasting experience was with a smaller group. That being said, the woman doing our pours clearly was far from a wine expert, and could only give little blurbs about the wines that I could have read myself in the pamphlet. I enjoy actually learning about the wines as I taste them, and it was a disappointing finish to an outstanding visit. The wines were very decent, and the gift shop was the largest we saw in the Hermann area. The view is very, very pretty - it's a panoramic of the town and some of the vineyard. It would be a nice place to sit outside and enjoy a bottle of wine. read more

Over priced "German" wine. Anyone who's had true German wine or been educated in viticulture would know what a knock off this place's wine is. Most of the wines are overloaded with sugar to accommodate the "less knowledgable wine crowd". Shame to ruin the art of true wine just to bring in a few extra bucks. The only wine that stands true here is the Missouri Norton wine. Go to Hermannhoff instead. This place is just a tourist trap for those who are ignorant enough to think sugary wines = good wines. read more

We had a very disappointing experience with this winery. We called one hour and 15 minutes before closing and informed the winery that we were on our way. We were 27 miles and would arrive 30 minutes prior to closing. The person we spoke to gave us directions from Hermann. When we got there, we followed her directions until we saw the sign to Stone Hill. However, there was no sign at the next junction where a turn was required and we were lost. We called the winery. No answer. We had to return to the main street and find a local who gave us instructions. In spite of this snag, we arrived 15 minutes before the close of business. No one could be found on the premises. Stone Hill gets a low mark for their poor directions and for not keeping their business open until the published closing time. They knew we were on our way, making their premature closure a slap in the face. We hurried along the snaking, unlit roads of post twilight Missouri country in a cold November night to get there on time. Since we're from California, we'll very likely never again get a chance to try Stone Hill wines, which we have been told have a good reputation. I wish I could say their customer service deserves a good reputation, but it doesn't! read more

Excellent wine, restaurant just OK. We loved several of the wines from Stone Hill. The Hermannsberger and the Norton were terrific. We had dinner at the restaurant and found it to be an OK faux German place. Knackwurst was excellent, wife loved the red cabbage, the au gratin side was also excellent. The German potato salad wasn't great - warmish and not very flavorful. Schnitzel was sacreligiously covered in a white sauce with a lemon slice in it (making the lemon unpickupable). Not great. Sauerbraten was bad - it's sliced beef with a sauce on it. That's not sauerbraten. Excellent local doppelbock beer on the menu. Good service, prices were very good. read more
