I've been going to this office for almost ten years now and I'm thankful for the care given by Dr Held. It's very difficult to get an appointment quickly but the exam is efficient and thorough. Technicians do the typical optometry and medical prep that takes an image of your eye and provides prescriptions. The doctor will do the final exam and then your follow up with a contact specialist as needed. Insurance is not accepted by Dr Held but the price is about the same as going to an optometrist! The staff is friendly and nice and the office is clean and comfortable. Have not seen the other doctors yet, but so far no issues in the time I've been going. Sometimes there are long waits but it seems normal for most San Antonio medical care. read more

Worst experience ever as a new patient. Appointment time was 1010am I was left in the waiting room for 45 minutes then I was taken back. Had a technician do a few things with me left in the room again and then they came in at 11:20 sit out in the waiting room for another 15 minutes. I ended up walking out and then when I called to speak to the of Veronica, it was one excuse after the other. No communication between the front and back, which is terrible customer service. ABSOLUTELY AWFUL! One star was forced and generous. First: they make you sign a document stating that although they accept in network insurance, that relationship is "between the insurance company and the patient" and therefore all items billed will be patient's responsibility. When asked for clarification, girl at desk was confused at best. Second: despite being very clear on phone about what I was making appointment for and what I did NOT need due to already having had done this year, was told dilation and full exam are MANDATORY. Last time I checked I am a grown adult. This place is a money grabbing, unprofessional establishment which I strongly urge everyone to AVOID entirely. read more

Appt reminders are done only by text from a number outside the area so you need to obtain that phone # add it your contact list so it is not blocked etc If you do not respond to the text they assume you are coming and if you miss the appt they will bill you. Called into the office for some information as I had been seeing flashes of light & floaters for the past 2 weeks. I had checked to see what was around the area & found this office online. Funny thing was that a YouTube video with Dr. Allison Young talking about Floaters popped up into my feed? I watched the whole video which was very informative and found she was at this office. I decided to read some Yelp reviews and call the office the next day. I called the office, explained my situation and asked what the out of pocket costs were? The clerk was very helpful and recognized my urgency so she told me what the out of pocket costs were for the eye tests and any test after. She also mentioned if I needed a specialist, the doctor would let me know after the test results. I was willing to pay for peace of mind before the weekend and didn't want to wait in case I had a detached retina or retinal tear. It's the holidays and I just wanted to get it over with, deal with whatever and move on. Thankfully the clerk was able to fit me in within 1.5 hours so I took it. She told me I would have my eyes dilated and the tests may take 1.5-2 hrs. I was reluctant at first because who wants to drive in traffic with dilated eyes where everything is super bright but I sucked it up and took the appointment. I came in and it was a busy lobby with lots of patients. I filled out my health info on the tablet vs. on paper and submitted it. I was probably seen by the tech about 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment. Tori was the tech's name and she was friendly and easy going. I explained my symptoms and gave her my last Optometrist's Exam Notes which I had online so that was really helpful. She took some vision tests, we chatted and she dilated my eyes with the eye drops. She was upbeat, personable and we talked about the growth and people from the city among other things and said I had really good vision. I didn't feel like a number with her friendliness and making it a positive experience. Tori took me into another room where the doctor would be examining me. It was an interesting room with Texas Longhorn decor...lots of it on the walls. A very Texan motif and not sterile by any means. I probably waited another 5-10 minutes until I was finally seen by Dr. Jana Waters. She had an assistant named Juan who took notes while she administered my exam. I told her my symptoms and having floaters in the past and she did the exam. Afterwards, she said my eye was fine, no detached retina so I was so relieved!! She told me what to look out for and what was happening which was just fluid leaking from the back but no detachment. I asked if I could do jump tucks and if that would affect it jumping around and she said no. She just said if I see a dark black circle that's constant or if I'm experiencing anything else, to come in and she'll have a look at it. I told her I prayed at church today and she said "Well prayer helps!!" Afterwards, I checked out and only had to pay for the price of a regular exam, no extra tests needed! I was pleased with the service and personnel from front desk check in to the Med Tech, Tori and Dr. Waters. The only thing I would suggest is to sanitize every surface a patient is putting their chin on. I saw Lysol spray on the counter so I assume it's being used? I just remember the protocols my regular Optometrist's office followed during my exam earlier this year. Every machine surface was sanitized by an alcohol wipe before each patient put their face/chin on it. I also saw my doctor washing her hands before examining me. I am honored to be the first one to give this practice a review. The Doctor I was recommended to is Dr. Allison Young. First I want to say that I was treated with professionalism, courtesy, and kindness. I was sent all the first visit records to my email so that I could feel them out and send them back electronically. It was extremely easy. I was also sent text messages so that I would remember my appointments. My first appointment was great, Dr. Young is shear joy. I was first given all the tests by a PA and they gave all that information to Dr. Young so as soon as she walked in she knew what she needed to focus on. She was very professional and answered all my questions and we came up with a temporary plan of action. With my Sjogren's my eyes as the rest of me is dry, desert dry. She gave a new trial of eye drops to try other than Restasis it works faster but, thank you big Pharm's it works great but to expensive to even for my insurance to pay. No problem I just called Dr. Young and she sent me a prescription for the Restasis my insurance did cover but my portion was to expensive for me. So Dr. Young had me stay on the Blink Gel Drops until my next appointment but to call if I had any problems. Then Welcome Covid-19 and all my appointments everywhere were cancelled except for emergencies. This month, the 1st I finally was able to get back in to see her and we decided that she would go ahead and set up for the procedure to get my eyes to a moisture level that could make it possible for her to get rid of my cataracts. The one in my right eye is big enough that I can only see blurry images, the one in the left is growing. So we have started the process I am explained everything every step of the way. And with my immune system being what it is the office is cleaned constantly and we are all wearing a mask. I felt safe and well taken care of. I will let you know how everything goes in a few weeks. 06/23/2020 I have had all my procedures done and I couldn't be happier. Dr. Young is such a joy to have as a Doctor. She honestly gets as excited as you do when you can see again. She is always upbeat even during these trying times. All the prodigals as meet so you always feel safe. Her and her staff as wonderful I can't say enough about how wonderful. I honestly thought I was going blind cause my cataracts were very big but even right after surgery I could see light. It was brighter than I'd seen in a long time. I was so extremely happy and now both eyes have been done, she told me they were the largest cataracts she had seen until my last surgery and she had to break the news that someone else had beat me and they had one's larger than I had. Unfortunately because of my Sjogren's I was not able to get the multi focal lenses so I just got the standard ones. Which means I will still have to wear reading glasses. That's okay wit me I can see again and I will be grateful for that. Thank you Dr. Young. read more

Rather disappointed. I have been to this clinic once. Made my follow up appt one yr in advance. I totally understand that a lot can happen in a yr. but to be told untruths is infuriating. The doctor I was scheduled to see left the practice. I was told by the staff that" she (the relocating doctor) call you and sent a letter in March to notify you of her leaving the practice. A cancellation call/message was made to you two day ago." Recheck my messages. No call. I sometimes get messages late. I asked for a copy of that letter. The doctor took it with her. I called the relocated doctor and again asked for a copy of that letter. Their response was that Stone Oak Ophth Center sent the letter and we do not have it. The honest and ethic of medicine is at an all time low. read more

The Dr was fine. The office staff is awful. Laughed at a young man who came in to tell them that his eye may need to be removed. The wait was also very long and they don't take vision insurance and didn't bother to verify my medical insurance so was left with a very large bill. Dr. Teresa Whitney performed cataract surgery on both my left and right eyes in August 2020, and she did an absolutely AWESOME job! Like many, I was terrified of the procedure, and had deferred it for many years, until I was nearly blind - OK, I was legally blind. With GREAT anxiety, I submitted myself to Dr. Whitney's care, and I emerged from the first surgery absolutely amazed at the results. I was back her table a week later for the other eye, FAR less concerned with both the procedure and the outcome. I am now 20:20 in both eyes, no longer need glasses of any kind, and have for the first in over a decade, had the eyeglass restriction removed from my driver's license! I can honestly say, I'm very sorry that I have but only two eyes, or I'd be a repeat patient. Thank you, Dr. Whitney, for restoring my eyesight!! read more

I'd like start by saying that Dr. Waters provided good care during my first visit. She has an excellent bedside manner. I would have given the practice 5 stars instead of 3 if there hadn't been a disconnect in communication. As a new patient, I wasn't made aware that my eyes were going to be dilated before my appointment. Had I known that, I would've had someone drive me to/from the appointment. Once I was informed, I asked if I'd be able to drive, and the office said I'd be alright and all I needed were shades to help with any light sensitivity. I felt uncomfortable and honestly, a little impaired when driving back home. I had to avoid highways because I was uneasy driving on them. I got home alright, but it took way longer than I would have. Patient communication is key. Letting new patients know their eyes are going to be dilated before the appointment is important in case they'd prefer making arrangements to get to and from the appointment. read more
