We've been coming to this area several times a year for 3 years now. Stonewalls has always been on our list to visit and we finally made it! We made reservations for our 20th anniversary last month. When we arrived we were quickly seated at a two person table in the back. Our server dropped by and took our drink orders and went over menu details. From the very start everything flowed perfectly. We ordered escargot for our appetizer which was delicious. I had a small Caesar and the filet. The steak was good but not amazing. The service was good and we had crème brûlée for dessert. They did wish us a happy anniversary as we were walking out the door as I think they missed that on the reservation (totally not a big deal just mentioning it for those that are used to a message on dessert or similar to acknowledge). Service was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant was very clean. They've enclosed their patio, if you want to sit outside. Inside, the tables were well spaced to keep distance. All the servers were wearing tight masks. The bartender was also wearing a mask, but it was way too loose. It didn't cover anything. Why wear it? We were just snacking, but all the food looked and sounded great. We had the fried cheese curds - SO FAB. Husband had the creme brûlée, and he was a fan. They also give you bread for the table, which was yummy. The only thing I didn't love were the cocktails. They were just too sweet. The first I got the salted caramel hot chocolate, and I almost couldn't finish because it was so sweet. But it is on the sweet side of the menu, so I went with and Old Fashioned next. It should be a little sweet, but this was too syrupy for me. But that's the only negative for me. If you like sweet drinks, you won't even find it to be a negative. Our family has been eating at Stonewalls since the 1990s. The steaks and crabcakes along with the salad bar are delicious and consistently outstanding. It is a bit pricey but if you want an upscale meal when visiting Banner Elk/Beech Mountain, Stonewalls is a must. I typically get the filet or Maryland style crabcakes but many of the items on the menu are outstanding. Stonewalls is a fine-dining option when in the High Country where you get good food and friendly, professional service from the staff and management. It is a much better choice than the poor fare offered at other places, like Holy Smokes/White Wolf Lodge up on Beech Mountain where the sad and overpriced food (BBQ/Sandwiches), fudge, clothes, and ski rentals are sketchy and the managers such as Mike are unprofessional, rude, and berate customers, even teenage children over the phone. Trisha at WWLodge actually makes up phony reviews on Yelp to trick customers so how can you trust food and service. Instead, the best choice in Banner Elk for upscale food and a reliable meal is Stonewalls. I recommend Stonewalls for a delicious, upscale, meal when in the Banner Elk/Beech Mountain area. read more

To be clear, the food was wonderful, but the service was some of the worst I have ever received. We had Jessica for our server. We waited over 40 minutes for our wine and cocktail. Food was prompt which would have been great if I didn't want to enjoy my drink with it. Other tables around us got bread shortly after being seated, but ours came after the appetizer had already been finished. I ordered my prime rib black and blue, which it did not come out as. I would have brought this up had it not been over 10 minutes before Jessica checked back with us. During that time she was on the floor tending to other tables and tried to bring us a second set of steak knives but still never asked how the food was. Would loved to have had dessert but had other plans and did not feel that we would be served in a timely manner. Great dining experience! Our server Cambry was so kind and knowledgeable about the menu. She answered every question with ease. Service gets a 5/5 The atmosphere was awesome. Newly renovated and very inviting feel. 5/5 The food was almost perfect. We started with crab stuffed mushrooms which were phenomenal, and the lobster bisque. My dad ordered the prime rib cooked to perfection and full of flavor. The only complaint about the dinner I have was my ribeye. The flavor was that of a traditional salt and peppered steak. The quality of my specific steak was not great. Very full of tendons which made it hard to chew. I don't want to say I was disappointed but I wasn't stunned with it in comparison to other cuts of meat I have had. The Brussel sprouts on the other hand were amazing. The mashed potatoes were good but not special. Overall I give my personal dish a 3.5/5. The liquor selection was phenomenal as well. Much to chose from and signature cocktails looked amazing! What a treat to be able to get a reservation at Stonewalls! One of the busiest restaurants in Banner Elk. As always, Scott the owner, is near the entrance to make sure customers are treated well, food is prepared as expected and customers are smiling when they arrive and leave. (Actually, I have no idea why Scott is there but I like to believe what I wrote. Otherwise why would everything be good!) Service was excellent, food delicious and, although it was noisy (Alum weekend at Lees McRae College) the atmosphere was one of happiness. We always look forward to dinner at Stonewalls. read more

Service was so disappointing. Our waters were never filled, our soup arrived cold (lobster bisque), our shrimp cocktail never arrived until after we reminded the server. Once reminded, she spent the next 5 minutes conversing with the next table before retrieving it. Me and my boyfriend decided to come here on our final night of vacation and it was a true disappointment. We were met by our waitress and given drinks quickly. But, after saying we needed just a minute to decide what we wanted to eat we were then left for over 20 mins while our waitress kept going back to other tables even though our menus were closed for awhile and we were clearly ready to order. (She was not crazy busy just checking on them) Then when our waitress finally made it back to us, and after noticing everyone around us had received bread we requested some as well and then ordered our main course. I ordered the New York strip and my boyfriend ordered the prime rib. When we received our food everything looked great! Until I cut into my steak and it was rare instead of medium. I of course asked for it to be cooked up and when it was brought back to me it was like nothing had even changed, so I of course asked for it to be cooked up again. Then when I FINALLY received my steak for the third time it was burnt to a crisp and med well pushing well done. I don't understand how you could even bring a steak that burnt to the table when all I wanted was a medium. I ended up tossing it when I got home because I could not eat. The taste was ok for my strip but the prime rib tasted absolutely flavorless and was tough. No manager ever came up to us to see if everything was alright. Just an overall disappointment. The tables were also very close and it was extremely loud. For the prices you're paying there should definitely be better quality, service, and overall hospitality. read more

We didn't have a reservation so we were lucky to get in. Worth the 40 minute wait for a table during Oktoberfest in Banner Elk! Alex, our server, was very attentive and the food was outstanding! The fresh warm bread and butter started the show, and then hubby's French onion soup made him even happier. His boneless ribeye was cooked perfectly to his liking and the fries were good. My 12 grilled shrimp on skewers were juicy and flavorful, and the Brussels were delicious. Beautiful restaurant with enclosed outdoor seating is pet friendly - two neighboring tables brought their furry family in and the staff came out to greet and treat. Well that was fantastic! We had not been here for a year or so but decided to come down the mountain to enjoy a nice dinner for Valentine's Day, I know amateur hour of dining. This place is always very busy and you need to make reservations, however they have 5 seats at the bar that are on a first come basis. We knew it would be crazy busy so we were there waiting for the doors to open at 5. Their menu is fairly tight but at least on the day we dined there were a bunch of specials. My husband started with the French onion soup. Very classically prepared and hilariously served with kid sized scissors to cut the cheese and bread. It was awesome to watch my left handed husband try to cut the cheese and bread. But at least he didn't choke - a known hazard with this dish! He ordered the rib eye special with a side of creamed spinach. Cooked wonderfully. I had the halibut special with a side of grilled asparagus and I've been dreaming about this dish since then. So, so delicious. The halibut was supposedly broiled but it was so tender it seemed like it was sous vied. The sauce on the halibut was creamy without being heavy with a nice acid balance. It's probably a good thing that this dish isn't on the menu all the time because I'd have to come down the mountain too much! I love the whole vibe of this place, nice but not overly fancy, you'll see suits to jeans (nice ones though ;). The decor is very classic, not sterile and not mountain casual. Although I think their menu is a bit limited I really like that all entrees come with a choice of a side and their sides options are extensive and very nice. We had fantastic service at the bar from Jason and Allie and enjoyed some lovely wine. I look forward to returning! read more

Let's start off with the escargot that made no mention on the menu description of having mushrooms in it, the ribeye being so tasteless I had to put salt and pepper on it, same with the filet only blue cheese butter gave it some flavor. The mashed sweet potatoes were "stone" cold and the waiter never came back after the food was delivered to report any of these issues to let alone ask how our meal was when delivering the bill. I truly have no qualms paying over a hundred dollars for a two party meal when there's value and flavor in it. I will never return to this restaurant when we visit every year. We were in the area for a day of fun. It was my Buddy's birthday. We did not have reservations and the restaurant was booked. I highly recommend reservations and you can do it here on yelp. We arrived as soon as they opened and put our name on the list. We went to the bar to get a drink while we waited outside. The bar tender was prompt and gave us all of the drink menu. Great selection of wines. Fantastic drink choices. We had the Margarita Verde, a spicy Margarita and a White Russian. We were promptly seated, due to a cancellation. We were really fortunate! Make reservations, you may not be as lucky as us and you don't won't to miss this place. When we were seated, we were greeted by Lana, our server. She asked if we had been there before. She knew her job, the menu, the specials and was quick to tell us if we wanted the dry aged beef, there was limited quantities. We wanted two and she proceeded to get us two reserved. If it wasn't for her promptness in identifying what we wanted we would have missed out on some of the best steaks. Our wives had the Halibut special and it was delicious. This was an absolutely wonderful dinner after a weekend of skiing. We were seated promptly but we had reservations. While we were checking in with the host we heard a gentleman telling someone on the phone that they were completely full for the evening so I certainly recommend getting a res ahead of time. Our server (Lanna?) was excellent. She was prompt, warm, and knowledgeable. She had several recommendations and I was not disappointed with the ones that I took. We had potato skins as an appetizer (crunchy and salty!). Entrees were pasta, steak, and chicken. I had some of each and all were perfectly executed. Ended with desserts and coffees. We stopped after our late afternoon visit to the Land of Oz. We didn't have reservations but were able to be immediately seated at the outdoor covered patio. It was chilly but the server said they don't put out heaters until December. Brrrr. The burger is huge and can easily be shared. The French onion soup was very good. It had large pieces of onion rather than the usual thin strips that slide off the spoon. And it's served with kid scissors, presumably to cut the stringy cheese. A cute touch. Btw - The patio is dog friendly. The table next to us had their adorable Australian Shepard. The restaurant serves a dog bowl of cooked rice with au jus and can be topped with a protein.
