He was very helpful and had a great sense of humor, and his co-workers John and Nikki were great as well. This is a great hardware store. I called ahead to see if they had the item I needed, and the guy on the phone was incredibly patient and helpful. I stopped by later on and he actually found me in the aisle and talked through all the different options and what would be the easiest and most budget-friendly purchase for my needs. As a younger woman I still unfortunately get weird looks and patronizing service at times when I enter hardware stores or ask questions (which I experienced at the Lowe's on Aurora earlier that day), but none of that here! This place is excellent. I was looking for the black roll of material to keep weeds out. I talked with SAM and he told me that burlap bags are much better and keep the weeds down for years. I asked to borrow some scissors and went outside to cut the bags into strips and SAM came out and helped me cut up the bags - even got a better pair of scissors to get the job done. Now in this day and age of fast fast everything would you find a customer service person who would do this? No you wouldn't but you WILL find such a person at Stoneway Hardware. Thanks Sam - you totally rock - also the other clerk who went and got a new box cutter to help me cut the bags - you also rock. Thank you both!!!!! I am a fan! Used to go to Tacoma Screw for all my fastener needs, but their hours are not as flexible as I would like. Once day we desperately (as only a 7 year old can be desperate) needed a mixed bag of 3mm bolts, washers, nuts and spacers for a project. Tacoma Screw was closed so we Googled our own neighborhood hoping beyond hope for an alternative. We discovered Stoneway Hardware and it was just the ticket. Their metric selection is not perfect (had to use 4-40 spacers, which is just fine), but they kept us going on our project. We have been back quite a few times since. I will still give Tacoma Screw my fastener business, but Stoneway has it on off hours and also has all of my other hardware business. read more

Again these guys never disappoint me. I go in and always get what I need never have to drive to the big box store. These guys are great and always willing to help you out with projects if one doesn't know he simply asks one of the other guys. I like their honesty about not having experience in certain fields..that to me makes a difference. I like that they work as team to help not only me but themselves. Unusually great customer service. The guy working the paint counter really went above and beyond to try to match some old paint I had recently. I go there frequently for small home improvement needs and most of the staff acts like they are owners of the store. As a person who grew up working in a large, family-owned builders' supply, I know how difficult it is to find, train and retain staff who cares. Stoneway has done it at the Ballard location. The only reason I am not giving them 5-stars is because they have a limited selection and I wish they had a broader inventory from which to choose! read more

You can get anything you want at "Stoneway Hardware", nuts, bolts, clippers, trowels, garden equipment, " You can get anything you want at "Stoneway Hardware." Lawn bags, lawn rakes, hoses and more. Clippers, hedgers, rakes and more, at Stoneway Hardware" Dollies, sanders, scrappers and more. I could spend hours here exploring. Great store and the employees are WONDERFUL, really WONDERFUL. The largest selection of fasteners in the universe. Not a very large staff sometimes you have to go looking. At least they know there way around the store and understand hardware. If you don't like their minimum charge on a credit card ($5) policy pay with cash. It keeps the cost of doing business and the prices down. I still don't understand why people don't carry a few bucks for an incidental purchase. read more

I usually don't give reviews, but I felt compelled to because this experience just creeped me out. Anyways, I go to Stoneway Hardware ballard, heading to the paint dept to get something, and there is this old guy with a beard and glasses sitting at the help desk in the paint section. He was just sitting there staring at me hard with those beady eyes, no hello, no warm smile just this hard uneasy stare, the kind of stare you get when you ring his doorbell to pick up his daughter for a date and he opens the door or the kind of stare you get if as he was just looking at something on the computer, and he is wondering if you saw him or what he's up to (you guys know what I am talking about). Anyways, in less than 3 seconds I get what I came for, and head out to the register past the desk, but he's gone! Two things come to mind maybe he was looking at something on the computer after all or maybe he thought I was going to come back and ask for help so he bolted right out of there, saw him at the cash register not really doing anything important. Looked right through me and asked the person ahead in line if they needed help....the old guy just has a creepy vibe about him, and my hunch is he is probably the owner or something and probably hates being there. Wondering who else out there has had a similar experience, suffice to say, with so many other choices in town why would I come back and spending money there, I won't be. read more
