I've lived in the West SFV for almost 40 years and have driven past Stoney Point hundreds, if not thousands of times and wondered at it. Finally stopped by this weekend to explore it. It's a neat place and I'm sure when I was a kid I would have had even more fun exploring all the cave-like formations and nooks and crannies. As a middle-aged couple, my wife and I both had a great time climbing around and were surprised at how easy it was to get to the top -- and what a view! It's a great way to spend a couple hours and get a great little workout. Downside -- well, it's what people have already mentioned -- the litter and graffiti. There's so much broken glass, fast-food wrappers and spray paint that the place feels more urban than rural. It's a total shame, but not a surprise -- all parks in and around the L.A. area tend to be eyesores due to massive amounts of use (there's so few parks in the L.A. area that they are pummeled by apartment-dwellers desperate for recreation) and the regular beer-drinking teens who have nothing better to do than to use, use, use and abuse, abuse, abuse. Anyways, it's worth visiting for a couple hours and kids will have fun. Don't expect pristine beauty -- if you want that, get as far out out L.A. as you can. read more

Great place for a rock climbing workout. So many ways you can go. Its scary if you don't have rock climbing gear. It can also be very romantic if you find a nice lonely spot with a lover. You can enjoy the nice view and have some snacks and just layout for bit. read more

I've been here a few times with my boyfriend. It's a great place for various outdoor activities ranging from rock climbing to rock scrambling to hiking. We come here to top rope. There are a lot of routes of different grades to practice climbing techniques. You will have to set up for top rope, so it would be wise to bring some gear. I've done some easy-ish climbs and some that are very challenging. Some of the climbs are very pumpy, so upper body strength is probably good. There are some cracks to practice crack climbing as well. The climbs aren't very long, thank goodness, but you still get a great workout. Stoney Point is a good day trip, or even a few hours would suffice, if you're short on time. I've been here both on a weekend and weekday. It wasn't crowded either time. On the weekend, we did run into some hikers. On the weekday, we didn't see anybody. It seemed like we had the park to ourselves. read more

This was the second time I have been here to climb, separated by close to two decades. I am not a boulderer by nature, but I did have a good time. I was in the area and wanted to wait out traffic, and climbing here is very easy. Park your car, grab your shoes and chalk (and crash pad if you have one) and get on the rock. There were friendly folks around, as I typically find in all climbing areas. There is a variety of routes, from simple friction routes for beginners and kids to very challenging highballs (I stay off of those). Without a spotter or pad, I climbed V0s, and tried a few V1s and 2s, having a fun time in the process. read more

I am a fan. Just finished climbing this place today. This isn't your walk up here or walk over there kind of place. Its more like figure out how to get up there, jump on this, go under that. There is no such thing as the way up or the way down. Its whatever you make the route. Parking is on the street. There are professional rock climbers around too. There are very easy ways to get to the top. It will just take longer. We prefer the challenge of going directly up and down. Great views. read more

This is a great place for people who like rock climbing or bouldering or simply crawling around rocks in a somewhat challenging way. If you're planning to get to the top, expect to get your hands and knees super dusty. For me, I like the ruggedness so this doesn't bother me. Plus, the view at the top is worth it! The only downside is that there aren't any clear trails or pathways so it's a bit dangerous for kids and you could get lost for a bit. We had to search around a while for a safe way back down. But, it's possible and I had a lot of fun! read more

I unexpectedly had so much fun hiking here. This place was a second choice after I miserably failed locating the trail head to Devil's Canyon. With that said, I can't believe I drove all the way to Vasquez Rocks when this place is actually a lot better and so much closer. I also saw rock climbers here but not at Vasquez, which is another plus if you're into the sport. I find during my visit here that every nook and cranny is a surprise and an adventure, and there are lots of them. read more

Hiked here a few times with bf. Both really enjoyed the challenge. Very rocky and definitely a good cardio workout. There is some significant graffiti but don't let that distract you from the geological beauty. Plenty of parking on Topanga Canyon. Would recommend for adults and families with kids aged 10 and over. Might need a strong adult to help get up and down the rocks. read more

Came here to do some outdoor bouldering after years of climbing inside. Was too much of a scardy cat to do a majority of the routes but there are 2 routes you can traverse sideways that were challenging, fun, and didn't give me the feeling like I would die. My favorite one was hidden in the middle, on what I'm told is called Beethoven. I highly recommend grabbing a book with detailed descriptions of the various routes before heading out. Helped us find everything. read more

Back home, Stoney Point has to be my favorite place to go hiking. I know they do a lot of actual rock climbing, bouldering and what have you, but it gets a gold star from me for the multitude of ways one can get themselves to the top. (Which often involves a mix of hiking and climbing over rocks and through small spaces) Every time we climb it it's an adventure and a mystery--"Let's try this path!" and "Hm, I wonder where this goes!"--and we'll always find our way up somehow. Plus, on a clear day you can get some of the best views in the valley from Stoney Point! If you live nearby and haven't tried hiking up to the top, grab a few friends and just go for it! I recommend starting on the side that faces the 118, but no matter where you start from you'll find a path (or something). And TAKE YOUR CAMERA! You don't want to get caught up there without it. Pack some water and snacks and go have yourselves a good time. read more

Hiking wise, I'd give this place about a 3/5.. but if you are there to climb, 4/5. The first time I went here I made the mistake of bringing my dog with me, and acrobatic as she may be, I still had to lift her 60 pound ass up/down certain stretches of rock. Please make sure you wear close-toed shoes with a good grip, as the surface is made of sandstone and tends to crumble right under you in certain spots (especially after rain!). I'd give Stoney Point about a 3/5 difficulty on the climbing scale. Good place for beginners to discover their strong points and find out what they need to improve. read more

Stoney Point is one of my favorite places in the world. That's a bold statement, but it's the truth! This park is on the northern end of Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Chatsworth. This site was used as a market by the Southern Pacific Railroad during the construction of the railroad through the Santa Susana Mountains. Today it's famous for rock climbing and bouldering. I recommend it for an individual that is up for a challenge, don't bring wimpy friends or small kids, parts of it can be dangerous. read more

God, how I love this place! I love rock climbing, it's problem solving every step of the way. It's great mental and physical conditioning and I love the challenge. Stoney Point is beautiful and great for all skill levels, whether you're climbing, bouldering, or hiking. I love the neighborhood which is full of ranches and horses. What I hate is the condition the park is in. There's cigarette butts, broken beer bottles, and tons of random trash everywhere. There's also a bunch of bad graffiti. I wouldn't have an issue if it was good graffiti, but the shit there is absolute garbage. I love going to Stoney Point for a fun and challenging workout, but I get a bit sad every time seeing such a lack of respect toward nature and towards other people. Yep, people suck, but the rocks are wonderful. read more

Its wonderful. Go out there early morning take some snacks , in winter you do not need water but take 1 bottle per person and your hiking sense. There is no hard or easy about this Hiking point. you can start climbing from anywhere you want to reach at the top. Not preferable in rain or wet condition. I've been here only about 3 or 4 times, but that's only because I don't live in the area. I'm definitely a fan of this place. It's really fun to hike, boulder, climb, repel, anything. It has really easy access, and a lot of routes. The only downside is a lot of dead brush, and broken glass. The graffiti doesn't bother me that much, because quite a bit of it is actually pretty good, but then again I'm a fan of it. read more

I went rappelling here for the first time and had a blast. It's a small area from what I can tell but the climbs are great and the views are far and wide. There are some points high up on the rock where others have already placed hooks that you can clip your gear into. If you don't want to go all the way to J Tree for a rappelling site, this is definitely a place to check out! read more

"Drop knowledge, not bombs"- Graffiti... Seriously, why would you want to tag that on a rock... So pretty much Amy G. covered most of the technical side of the climbs available at Stoney point and yes, climbing between 2 bee hives sucked. There are a couple of beginning slab rock climbing on the front of the mountain if you get there early enough, however, if you can't, most of the other climbs available are much tougher. Parking is located on the street, just park behind that long line of cars. Overall, I prefer Big Rock over Stoney Point. However, this seems to be the place to go for bouldering. read more

I went to Stoney Point for the first time today and I really enjoyed it. The access was easy and parking wasn't an issue. I'm not an experienced hiker or climber by any means but I was able to handle it -- and there seemed to still be enough of a challenge for those more experienced than me. Having been to Horse Flats, Tram, J Tree, Bishop, various Malibu areas, and Rubidouix, I still give Stony props for the easy access. Local easy to find routes and an amazing history. The location is also a downside because of the broken glass, graffiti and homeless camps, but would go again and again weather permitting. Please don't climb here just after the rains. read more

What fun! We arrived on a warm-and-slightly-smoky Sunday morning. We parked on Topanga Canyon as far down the hill as parking allowed (south). We got to walk past the nearby horses/ponies/sheep and other critters, which was fun. We were just hikers - no gear - and got passed up by a lot of rock-climber types with pads and gear, and a few parents-with-kids. Yes, there's a lot of graffiti on the rocks and around the train tunnel (near where the Chatsworth train crash happened). There's also a lot of broken glass from the idiots who think it's a red hot idea to drink beer there and throw their bottles. We started climbing the hill/rocks on the north side. We just picked a trail and hoped for the best. Other real-rock-climbers were friendly and pointed us to a good way up. It looked a little intimidating and was in spots, but I'm a relative wimp and didn't have a lot of trouble. As we were scrambling up one of the trickier spots, my husband helpfully let me know that other Yelpers had said that the downhill part was more challenging than the uphill. Great. We got to the top without too much time and trouble. And the downhill part was fun - well, less so on the husband whose knees give him trouble. We'll bring 11-year-old kid next time. Tips: - Learn what poison oak looks like and avoid it. There's some on the trail, but it's easy to avoid if you pick a way up that doesn't go through it. - Bring water. - Wear shoes with good gripping soles. I wore my hiking boots; husband wore his hiking sneakers. read more

Went on the trail and climbed up the rocks. I didn't expect much from this place as it's not much but -- it is. At the beginning of the trail, we witnessed a group of people utilizing a couple rocks to free climb. They were taking all necessary precautions to avoid injury -- which was a relief. We turned the corner and found a spot to climb upward to the top, so we did. There are multiple ways up to reach the top so just pick and choose. Once you make it to the top, sit down and enjoy the great view of the valley. On the way down we sidled our way between a couple of large rocks and on the other side were met with a couple rock climbers -- this time with rope. Again, great to see a variety of people here. When you make it back to the bottom, onto the main trail, it's a short trek to the end. This is not a difficult or strenuous (trail) hike and is particularly great for the view at the top. If you want to achieve a quick climb to the top of some rocks to enjoy a decent view of the valley, this will suffice. read more

Seriously, I once lived right across from there off of Santa Susana Pass and I could see it from my bedroom so sometimes I'd grab my worse half (jk, WAY way better half) and we would go to there and hike hike hike until I got bored so we'd bike bike bike home. On a more helpful note, it is the best rock climbing anywhere close to it. Go there, explore, discover, hopefully get bitten by a snake or eaten by a shark (I'm not on drugs, I'm just a silly 31 year old girl who hasn't grown into her thirties, mentally, yet). There's no body of water here and especially not one in which you might be swimming with sharks, as they say on Monday nights if you're into edm and sign up for their mailing list or just go...I'm going to play where's waldo with you though and not tell you what club it's at though. It's actually because I'm such an asshole. That I won' tell you. We are not really playing where's waldo. read more

Great place to hike when the weather isn't too hot. This is a moderate hike, with many places to rest in between if needed. But it really isn't that difficult of a hike. There are some places that are more unstable than others because of the excessive amount of dirt versus rock, so be careful for that. Wear bug repellent or pants because there is a lot of tall brush where bugs may be hiding. The top is a nice place to chill and a beautiful view of Chatsworth. People also rock climb here, so there is another option. There have been spottings of mountain lions, but I didn't run into any. Overall I would say it was a good hike. read more
