I knew everything had and expiration date. I just didn't know you could sell it! Today again I ran out of a few things and went to stop n shop because I didn't want to drive over to market basket in Burlington. Big mistake! As i sit down to dinner to realize that my food which I just bought taste bad. I'm not a great cook, but were talking bad! The ranch I bought for my salad was odd tasting to say the least. I looked at the label. I didn't reach to the shelve and grab the wrong bottle it was the normal stuff. (Kraft classic ranch) as I turn the bottle I see that the ranch expired 6 months ago. gross I should have known better this happens all the time here. This has happened a few time. I have even told the employees "Hey there is a whole shelf of expired hot dog" ( to no avail ) The store has also developed a gross smell recently. I cant wait for Whole foods to open up down the street. I am hoping to get fresh food even if I have to pay more. read more

I'll be honest, this is the place that made me start writing Yelp reviews because I could not believe how awful it was. Since moving to MA, I've always heard friends and coworkers tell me that Stop & Shop and Shaw's were too pricey, and Market Basket was where it's at. But the one time I went to Market Basket a 15-minute shopping trip became a 60-minute journey through the underworld, due to the "advanced" age of the clientele, and I've never been back. But having shopped at various Shaw's and S&Ss throughout Malden, Medford, and Somerville, I never really thought the prices were all that high ($50/week to feed a family of 2, on average), and the service was generally fine. But after moving to Arlington and going to this place three times, I'm ready to never go here again. Two weeks ago, I actually went a few miles out of my way to go to the Stop & Shop on Alewife Brook instead of this one, because this one is so miserable. Why is it miserable? 1) Again, everyone that shops here seems to be moving at about 70% of the pace of a normal human trying to get their shopping done. It's awful. I don't want to spend time shopping, stop keeping me here. 2) The aisles are too narrow for the size of the store, but there aren't enough small carts. Result? More time stuck maneuvering your cart and less time getting the hell out of there. 3) The selection is really nonsensical. I largely buy the same stuff every week, yet the three or so weeks I went here, random items would just not be there, but be present in huge quantities the next week. And we're not talking weird stuff. Panini bread from the bakery and buckets of cookies. Zucchini. Come on, now. You're a giant supermarket, you better have zucchini at all times. 4) The parking lot is pretty awful, full of people that are more likely to get into accidents with you than the average MA driver. But, most importantly, it's the price. Maybe everyone that told me that Stop & Shop was expensive was always referring to this store. Again, I've bought pretty much the same things on a weekly shopping trip for the last 5 years or so, and I know that short of a special occasion, it always comes out to $45-$55 a week. Every single shopping trip at this store converged around $75, for the same items. That's a 50% increase. And that's why I'm never going here again. I can save $25/week or $100/month by just going down Mass Ave. to the S&S on Alewife Brook, where everyone moves with a degree of alacrity. So if you need to do a full shopping trip, you should go to that one too. Because this place is the worst. Edit: I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but there's also a really weird thing in this store where certain things just aren't available in certain sizes or whatever even though it's a giant grocery store that should theoretically have everything in stock. For example, there are no "family size" bags of chips. Sometimes, you're having a party and you want a giant bag of chips. But this store just doesn't sell them, it only sells the "large but not giant" size, and of course, that's more expensive per bag. It's a minor thing but it contributes to the bafflement of why this establishment even exists, since even tinier grocery stores have no trouble stocking the full array of package sizes for most of their products. read more

When am I going to find a decent grocery store in Arlington?! Because this Stop & Shop is definitely not it. I have always bought groceries at a Stop & Shop, whether it was in my hometown of Pittsfield, the city of Amherst where I lived during college and grad school, and now Arlington, where I just moved. And neither of those two former locations were as rundown as the latter. First of all, the store smells a little strange, which isn't really conducive to wanting to shop for food. Second, the store's just old and in desperate need of renovation. Third, and perhaps worst of all, is the selection is far more limited than other grocery stores I have been in. They do not carry the brand of seltzer water that I like (major problem!), and just the variety overall is quite limited, probably because the store seems smaller than the average grocery store. This store is convenient because of its location, but I definitely will be continuing my hunt for a grocery store that I really like (Trader Joe's, you're up next!). read more

This store is by far the dirtiest, unorganized, poorly stocked and poorly managed supermarket I have ever been to. This is my first on line complaint/review I have ever posted and I'm 69 years old. Compared to any other local super market chain this is the worst. Further more, during this Covid-19 crisis it is my opinion they are intentionally not stocking products to force the consumer buy alternate products and sizes. read more

The only reason I shop at this dump is because its so close to my house. Other than that, there's nothing about this place that's worthwhile. Rotten produce, not enough registers open at peak times, filthy floors, bad odor throughout the store, dusty shelves, limited selection of groceries. Oh, and this place has a HUGE customer service problem. Employees clearly detest their jobs and show no basic manners. I've seen people behind the service desk texting and ranting about how they don't want to be there, self-checkout cashiers eating food and cursing openly to friends across the room, cashiers damaging customers' items and then making snide and sarcastic comments (to the tune of "Get over it."). I dread going into this store. I only go because it's close to work. But I think I may start going to other grocery stores before work. Yesterday I was about to enter into the self checkout lane and the store manager decided to push a cart in front of me into that lane. There has been a orange on the floor in the same spot for about a week. The workers are always running around having boxes or there carts in the way. Cold drink selection really blows. It was average until they put new coolers in. The building looks like it's never been remodeled. It looks like it was built in the 70's. I would definitely not use this store for my regular grocery shopping. read more

I signed up for a Yelp account specifically to write this review because my annoyance exceeded my apathy. I'll give them a pass (for now) on the poor variety, high prices, lack of proper deli or bakery, etc, because others have already covered these shortcomings, and they do have certain limitations imposed by the physical size of the store. However, there is no reason not to have friendly, competent, employees. I'm generous, I'll even give you a pass on competent as long as you are nice and seem like you're trying. These people are not. I don't normally stop at S&S, but I stopped in because they are open a bit later on Sundays than other stores. "Open" however, is apparently subjective, because they were out of skim milk, out of broccoli, out of yogurt.... I gathered up what items I could and went to checkout, where the bagger proceeded hold my apples one to two feet above the metal bag-holder, and drop them in from that height, thus bruising them all. (I just cautiously ate around the bruised spots on one, which is what triggered my annoyed review.) Then she tossed in some heavy canned goods on top of my blackberries - if I wanted blackberry preserves i would have bought them thankyouverymuch - and so on and so forth with all my groceries. Why have baggers (and pay them time-and-a-half on Sundays) if they are going to actively destroy what I just way over-paid for? read more

When I moved to Arlington I was so disappointed when I went into this store. They really need to revamp this space. It feels like a grocery store circa 1970 layout. The bakery section is cramped and tucked in the back corner. Only one person can navigate it at a time. The meat section is dingy and there is no meat counter. The bottle redemption machines are outside and always filled. The vegetable section is decent. The check-out clerks are always nice and pleasant, but the baggers never seem to know what they are doing. If it wasn't for the coupons and shell gas discounts, I'd prefer to go all the way out to the Roche Bros in Burlington. read more

I've lived up the street from this stop and shop for over 20 years and never really had an issue with the place. In the past year or so, however, on 3 separate occasions I have bought chicken and gotten home only to realize the chicken is bad. It's a real buzzkill when you stopped by the store on your way home to save time and have to run back to return some FOUL smelling chicken. read more

I give this place a rating of two stars because: (1) It is dimly lit. Like the Burlington Market Basket, it arranges columns of lights perpendicular to the aisles but with only 50% of the lighting as Market Basket. This gives a striped pattern of dimly and brightly lit sections that runs down each aisle. (2) Employees are often disgruntled. This is not the case at Whole Foods, Market Basket, or Trader Joe's. (3) "Loyalty card" supposedly needed to get close to a reasonable price on items, though they give you the lower price anyway. How foolish. Who else still uses these cards? (4) Outrageous prices: Stop and Shop / Market Basket comparison: 6 rolls paper towels: $6.19 / $4.99 Tostidos brand tortilla chips: $4.19 / $3.00 Store Brand tortilla chips: $3.00 / $2.00 Name brand reduced fat mexican cheese: $3.79 / $2.69 (5) Not enough registers are open Just yesterday as I saw the lines increasing, they proceeded to close two registers. They had more closed registers than open registers. Nobody cared. ***** This gives me the impression the place is run by bean counters. Management is operating in Zombie Land, persisting for another day. This gives a dreary atmosphere to the store. read more

The isles are crammed with junk, making it impossible for 2 carts to pass. The registers are slow, with not enough baggers. The produce is bruised and bad, with fruit flies. The only shining light is the deli department. The deli crew is friendly and efficient. I wish Arlington had a Hannaford. read more

I rarely end up here, and even so I've often found they're out of produce staples. This week it was garlic and carrots; second time I've been there when they had no garlic. A few months ago I noticed food was thawing in a freezer case; I looked at the thermometer and it was above 40. I told someone working there and he clearly didn't care, went to customer service and the attitude was along the lines of "Why are you telling me?" Finally found someone who would at least look at it, but the next step should have been to haul out the thawed food for disposal, which didn't happen, at least not in the 15 minutes or so that I was still there. read more

I have no idea what these people are complaining about. This Arlington Stop and Shop is way better than the one I used to go to in Brookline or the one in Brigham Circle. I have lived near here for 4 years now and about a year ago the store was renovated. If you don't see what you like, just ask them- the manager is always around and very friendly. While they might be out of some things on sunday night or last minute before a holiday, in general they have an excellent product selection and decent produce. I can't speak for the meat, but their vegetarian "meat" selection is fantastic. And no one should still be buying bottled seltzer water- go get a sodastream and stop killing the environment. read more

Self check out almost always has problems. More often thant not you will be bagging your own items if use the self check out. Most staff are not helpful. They will stand there and watch you bag you items while they do nothing. The is a small food selection. Saturdays and Sundays tend to busier. More than once I have viewed the sales posted for this location online and gone into the store and the items were not on sale. I only go into this location if absolutely need to other wise to go Market Basket in Somerville. Way Better pricing and better food selection. read more

I was in Stop and Shop yesterday and i must say, the new improvements to the store are great. I went in early in the afternoon and was able to complete my shopping in about 15 min. I didn't have to wait for checkout, as the line was very short. I love the fresh fruit and veg section. And...that's the main reason why I go there. I never buy meat there, as I'm not much of a meat eater. They're frozen food section has numerous varities, but is very expensive, especially during these days of recession. I prefer this store to Johnnie's Foodmaster. read more

We've been to this Stop & Shop location a few times in the past few months. It's much smaller than the other locations I've visited in the past but after visiting the other markets nearby, I guess this is typical of Arlington. Unfortunately, the atmosphere of this place wasn't as good as the others and I think the layout of the aisles could be improved. We'll still visit this place though as there are occasionally some excellent deals such as with corn on the cob. read more

I never thought I'd write a review for a grocery store, unless it was an unusually pleasant experience (that I would then forget to Yelp about later, but I digress), but man, this place is just awful. I don't expect shopping for groceries to be all that pleasant, and this place is so close to me that I was putting up with the poor customer service and unusually terrible selection (really, terrible. No matter when you go, nearly all the normal sizes and items are sold out). Never mind the drunks that are usually milling about outside. But, the last time I went in here, my items were ringing up far higher than the already high prices I'd agreed to when I decided to purchase the items and head to check out. I mentioned it to the person checking me out, and as it seems, their solution was to finish charging me and send me to customer service for the refund on the overcharge. Fine, inconvenient, but I know some stores have this policy having worked in retail outlets myself. So, I pay, lug my bagged groceries and receipt of ~$200 in items to the customer service woman and explain the issue. I get the eyeroll and sigh of someone who doesn't want to do their jobs, but I pretend not to notice so things can move, incredibly slowly, but as quickly as this store is able. This woman then asks me to pay for the new total with the upcharges removed. I explain I should be getting refunded, not asked to pay for the purchase twice. Well, she cannot comprehend it, despite me pointing at the receipt she is holding showing where the charge was made. Her decision is to cancel the entire refund transaction (which wasn't a refund after all), keep my receipt and then come around and take the groceries I had paid for, despite me loudly announcing, "Hey, Lady, I paid for those already. Taking things I've paid for is theft." She is an older mid-40s woman with bad attitude, so it seems this is beyond her comprehension. I'm feeling pretty dumbfounded, though, as this is a first even for this dismal place. I still can't make heads or tails of it, and I know that trying is futile because actions resulting from strange life choices are things that will never be understood. For me, it exemplified why I should not be shopping in such a low-brow place that treats its customers poorly. I found a Shaws a town over that has changed my life - better prices, normal level selection, and far more pleasant treatment from happier workers. I come here a lot. At least once a week, maybe more. The produce is not so great. It's not horrible, but is definitely lacking. Wilted looking strawberries, "ripe" avocados apparently made of concrete, etc. I hate that there is no fresh seafood counter. I'd give it 2.5 stars if I could. I find the prices to be rather high, but that's true for just about everywhere except Market Basket, and I will pay more not to have to deal with that hot mess. Hi Yelpers, I just wanted to let you know that today I felt helpless, but because of the good generosity of a complete stranger came to the rescue!! My cell had no more reception! UGH! I went searching for a pay phone. I walked into S & S which is a couple blocks from me. There were very few customers and employees. I asked a young HS kid if there were any pay phones. He had no idea, the older cashier woman told me that the customer service was not open. She also informed me that there are no more pay phones in Arlington. The only customer in line offered me her cell phone!! I felt a sign of relief!! I was able to call my parents to let them that I was ok and that my phone was no service!! I was so grateful to this woman and highly dissappointed in Stop n Shop!! read more

The store has been barreling downhill for longer than FoodMaster has been closed. A lot of the things I used to be able to get there I now have to climb a bus to get in Porter Square. (And to lug back.) It's not a space thing: quite a few items on the shelves are three to five wide and two cans deep; their Stop&Shop version of Cool Whip spreads out over five rows -- the number of examples could be found throughout the store of fewer choices, and not just "because of space." The employees are unhappy, but have always been friendly to me; clearly, they're not the ones at fault. read more

I think this Stop & Shop has gotten better lately. The clerk I usually get is very nice & helpful. They have a better choice of organic foods than before. I find some good deals here. I tend to buy the sale items and then go elsewhere for other things on my list. I used to have a difficult time navigating the aisles but have not noticed in the past few weeks as many large boxes in the middle of the aisle. I have been to multiple stop and shops from Worcester to Somerville. Worst customer service. I still come here bc it's 3 min drive from my home in Arlington. I have health issues and can only eat certain things and have been a customer of stop and shop for almost 10 years- it's easy to get every brand I can have and such. But there have been multiple times when I've left this location feeling embarrassed. Today one of my bags accidentally broke and the guy bagging them gave me a dirty look and whispered something under his breath I didn't understand. The cashier and the person behind me tried to reassure me that it was okay but he was not ok. This is not the first time this has happened to me. I've been coming to this grocery store every month for the past 3 years since I also work next door. I've had ppl talk down to me, make me feel unwelcome as if they hate their jobs. I've never seen less unprofessional behavior in any place I've ever been to. These people seriously need customer service training. There was no reason as to why an hour after I left the grocery I still feel embarrassed bc someone made me feel that way!!!! Again. This is not the first time. The employees aren't even helpful. Only person that's ever helped me was flower shop and deli is also very good. But checking out has always been a disaster. read more

If there was any competition in the area it would be long gone and maybe that is the problem. Whole Foods is in another category so it is not really competition. May be the most expensive milk prices north of the Charles River. Any other grocery in any other neighboring town is $1/gallon lower.

This location is the worst - even after their "renovation". Yes, it is a convenient location. Hence one star. As others have said in their reviews - every time I shop here they are out of many staple items on my list. And almost EVERY TIME I try to buy Lactaid they are out it. In fact, the whole Lactaid case is usually empty except for the "fat free" variety. EVERY TIME. If you have the demand, why not keep it better stocked? The icing on the cake, however, is the generally apathetic staff. I try to avoid shopping at this location whenever possible (but it *is* convenient). read more

This is somewhat disgusting, so reader beware. I bought among 11 other things a little container of toothpicks. At the 12-and-under register, after waiting for the woman with 27 items ahead of me to leave, the cashier tried and tried to scan the bar code on the toothpick container. Finally, she opened it to pull the plastic and in the process put her fingers all over the toothpicks! Toothpicks intended to be put in people's mouths! Par for the course at this quite dirty store filled with surly employees. I wish there was competition other than WFM which is too expensive to compete. read more

The only reason I shop here on occasion is when they send me good coupons in the mail, have something on sale I normally use/need, and when I can use the digital coupons on the S&S app to further knock down the price on some items. Otherwise stop and shop is way too overpriced, their selection isn't great at this location and things aren't always so fresh. So it's REALLY annoying that I find errors on my receipt every.single.time I shop there. Seriously - every.single.time. I always plan an extra 10 minutes during trips there for a sit down with the staff at the customer service desk, flyer and phone in hand to show them where I was overcharged and didn't get the sale price, or where my digital coupons weren't applied. The digital coupons that you load to your card - ha! What a joke! They don't automatically get applied! On my most recent trip I got refunded $13.94 by the customer service desk for digital coupons that weren't applied to what I bought. That's nothing short of robbery! Luckily I always find that the customer service people are nice and will make things right, they even honored some paper coupons that had expired the day before. But every time I go there I wonder why I even bother......and I think of people in our town who don't have cars to go to the far less expensive market basket 15 mins away and who are stuck shopping at this rip off store. The majority of people who work here are extremely rude. I visited this location last weekend with my fiancé, granted they were closing in 5 minutes (I originally thought they were open later) but I literally only needed ONE thing. When I walked in the door, the young man standing by the door rudely told us they were closing in 5 minutes. Keep in mind people were still in line paying for their items. Obviously giving us just enough time to grab our item and make our way to the register. As my fiancé and I were halfway done the isle, this older, heavy set women with blonde hair yelled at us at the end of the isle telling us that the registers were closing and we wouldn't be able to purchase our items if we didn't make it to the register at this very minute. I told her that she did not to be so rude about it. On top of how EXPENSIVE they are, I purposely don't shop here and shop at Market Basket because they are NEVER this rude to their customers. I am not usually one to stop into a place last minute, but if I have Market Basket has never treated me the way the staff at Stop & Shop did. Completely unprofessional. read more

I've been in many Stop & Shop locations all over the state, but never until I visited this one last week have I ever seen a rodent walking around the store. It's obvious the store has a rodent problem by the many rat traps evident around the area but to actually see one walking around the produce aisle was absolutely disgusting!! It's bad enough that the place is dingy and dirty to begin with(the day I was there it was after 9am and half the lights in the store were still off from the the night before), but to have to shop where there are actual vermin running around among food is just really too much. This place should be investigated by the town Board Of Health. On top of that, there more than a few questionable persons lurking in the store supposedly shopping but really are just homeless or junkies bothering customers. This location is a real dump and the management should be ashamed!!! read more
