Stop and shop is doing better these days trying to offer lower prices but you have to hunt for deals and know the going prices. Overall Market Basket is so much cheaper. I do a quick walk through, to find good deals, before heading to MB. They have definitely upped their game and I will be watching in the future. Hopfully it is not too little too late. read more

The worst grocery store ever! Explain to me how you expect people to use digital coupons through the app, and yet there's no service in the store. Log onto their Wi-Fi... that's a joke as it's constantly going down. So basically, I wasted two hours of my day shopping there, to not be able to use any of the digital coupons or even see what was on sale because of the Wi-Fi going down and the lack of any Internet service. If you're going to have the highest prices of any grocery stores around, have the decency to make sure your customers can use coupons to offset your ridiculous pricing. read more

I have a super busy day planned with little time to waste, but I felt strongly enough about the consistently horrendous service at the Stop &Shop in Colchester that I felt I needed to make the time to leave a review. I think the associates at this location must be competing against each other to see who can provide the absolute worst customer experience. Literally every time I'm in this store ( which is a few times a week) the employees are blocking aisles while engaging in personal conversations with each other. They do not acknowledge your presence except for the rare occasion that they lower their voices as not to risk you hearing said personal conversation while you're trying to navigate around them. Today was the last straw. I ran in to grab a yogurt for lunch. Three, yes three, associates were standing around a cart full of yogurt blocking the entire case while one of three very slowly stocked the case, as breaks from his conversation allowed. When my mere presence looking longingly at the inaccessible yogurt case wasn't enough for the 3 employees to ask if I needed to get to the case or if I needed help, I said "excuse me" twice with no reaction from the 3 employees. Deciding at this point that I'd rather drive way out of my way to Big Y in Marlborough than support this horrible Stop &Shop, I attempted to exit the store. However 2 associates were standing right in front of the exit chatting and laughing and making it impossible to get around them. When they finally moved they made no eye contact, no excuse me, no words at all to the customers trying to exit. I wish I could say this was a rare occurrence for this location but sadly it has been how they roll for the 2 years I've been living in the area and trying to shop locally. But it's finally got to the point where I'd rather be inconvenienced traveling to another town to shop than spend another penny at this joke of a store. I'm quite certain they would have been out of business long ago if not for the fact that they're the only large grocery store in the area. very poor service today! first of all, there is never any fried chicken prepared which is what i came in for. second upon checking out i wanted cashback i followed the promts and completed my transaction. for some reason it was denied i showed the clerk that the transaction posted to my account. she was very mean and offered no explanation! i was told to call my bank. upon calling the bank she explained that stop & shop imediately reversed the transaction in the same minute it was posted. not sure why they would do this. needless to say, i had to drive elsewhere to retrieve my cash. i'm all set! i wont be back for a very long time! read more

This Stop & Shop has very little going for it. I'll start with the positive. There is a *decent* (not excellent) selection of vegetarian, vegan and natural food options. There is a dry goods section, a refrigerated section, and a frozen section all dedicated to the above-mentioned products. I do buy vegetarian items, but usually I don't purchase the organic and/or "natural foods". If those are things that are important to you, you can find some of the things you may be looking for. Some of the staff that work here are nice. There is a 20-something year-old guy who works at the customer service desk who is polite and accommodating. The cashiers can be hit-or-miss, but I've had some pleasant cashiers. The online coupons are helpful. They are downloadable on the app or website by connecting your savings card account. The tech glitches with it seem to be ironed out finally. For over a year, the app wouldn't remove a coupon once you used it, so you never knew which ones you had used but you can use each once only. Corporate's "fix" was to have a popup message on the app saying you can use online coupons only once, even if they're still showing in your account. That caused headaches for many (like me) who couldn't keep track of every single online coupon I'd used. I'd end up paying full price for an item I thought they still had a digital coupon for. The gas points are a good perk. For every $100 you spend at Stop & Shop while using the savings card, you get 10 cents off per gallon at a participating station. I use Stop & Shop gas station in Colchester. Sadly, there is a cap of 20 gallons at the discount price, which was a new caveat as of about a year ago. Unfortunately, my husband's gas tank holds more than 20 gallons. The Stop & Shop gas pump will cut off the gas supply at 20 gallons while you are fueling. Now for the bad: The prices here are OUTRAGEOUS. The prices at Colchester Stop & Shop are a reflection of the fact that there is NO grocery-chain competition in the immediate area. Bear in mind that the East Hampton Stop & Shop has the same district manager and the same weekly sale prices as the Colchester store. I do notice a slight disparity in prices between the two stores on SOME regular-priced items. Many of us hope that the opening of Big Y in Marlborough may force some competitive pricing. I've noticed that within the past 2-3 weeks, the prices of things I buy regularly have risen. An item that had a regular price of $2.79 2 weeks ago now costs $3.19. Another item regularly priced at $4 (but was often on sale for $3) has risen to $5. This week, the "sale price" on that item is $4.79. Um, that's 79 cents above what the regular price was recently. It seems they're doing what jewelry and appliance stores do: Raise the regular price of something. Then mark the item a bit lower, calling it a "sale", while the "sale price" is higher than the regular price was a short while ago. The quality of the produce can be bad at times. I have come across moldy peppers, bruised peaches, old corn, mildewed carrots and rusty lettuce. When you're paying way more than most other grocery stores for these produce items, the fact that some of it is inedible is insulting. Stop & Shop sells outdated food. I nearly purchased a salad dressing that had expired months ago. The label design had changed and whoever stocked the item put the newer-labeled bottles behind the old ones. Obviously they knew the date was several-months expired. I was able to get a bottle that wasn't expired, but again, it was BEHIND the expired ones. I saw an employee doing put-backs in the same aisle. I told her of the expired date on the front bottles and gave her the expired ones. She didn't apologize or even feign being shocked they were selling old items. She took the bottles and just said "Oh. Ok". I have also mistakenly bought expired dairy products there, not checking the date. A few months ago, I was checking dates on yogurt and saw that one was way past its date. I checked the yogurt cups behind it and found some that weren't expired. Again, there's no way they didn't know the ones in front were old, since they had to stock the newer cups BEHIND the expired ones. The weekly sales start on Fridays. Expect that if you go to buy sale items on Saturday, the shelves of many sale items will already be 100% empty. If you ask someone to check in the storage room for more of the item(s), they'll say there are none back there. Shift managers never know when deliveries of certain things are due in. Obviously, whoever is in charge of ordering is doing a poor job. So, you'll have stand in line at the courtesy booth for several rainchecks. Then when you'll stand forever in line for 1 of only 2 open checkout lanes to pay too much for low-quality food. More than likely, you'll also be bagging your own groceries. Lastly, speaking to a manager about any of this is completely futile. Nothing will change. read more

Went is shitty Stop & Shop in Colchester Connecticut tonight. around 6:30pm. Did some shopping and realized I needed some American cheese from the deli. As I was approaching the deli and the area where precut deli things live, I noticed the one dumpy guy behind the deli counter blundering away. (Literally). I thought maybe I missed it and they closed but I could clearly see it wasn't closed down, meats still in the holding area, slicers still dirty. I hung around for 5 or 6 minutes (and someone else) took a number, so I decided I would call the store on my mobile phone. Customer Service twit answered.) I told her I was standing at the deli but no one was here to help us. She said she would page someone...she did...but after another 3 or 4 minutes no one came. (And there were several other employees within eyesight...none of them blinked an eye.) So I called back and this time she paged a manager over. Well bumble-dickhead manager came over and informed me the employee was on his break...maybe I could go do some other shopping and come back. I said all I wanted was some American cheese. I REALLY thought he was going to just hop back there and cut it for me but he said, "I'll go find out how long he has left on his break." And he walk away. And off he went, returning a couple more minutes later to inform me that the employee had about 4 minutes left on his break. I looked at my watch...it was 7:26pm. Deli-boy came lumbering back about 6 or 7 minutes later. I didn't confront the manager...but I should have: Really, dickhead? You can't cut me a pound of American cheese? At this point I'm the only customer (the other person left). Absolutely pathetic. read more

This store is a joke. I just paid $7.99 for a watermelon. You gotta be rich to shop there. Also, there is always a wait at the registers since they only have one open one with an actual person. I hate the self check outs. There's always some issue and I end up needing assistance anyways. Plus, when you walk into the store you get greeted by a god awful smell, like rotten meat. I've been going to this store on & off since I was hired with my agency since 2014. We use this store to do grocery shopping once a week for our individuals who live in group homes. In order for us to make a purchase, we have to receive a special slip compensating us for the purchase. The last couple of weeks I've been going to the store and when I request the special slip, most staff seem to not know what I'm talking about and I'm often getting an attitude from the staff because they don't understand what I am talking about. What gets me most upset is the fact that I'm there every week & get treated with confusion & no respect. It's tiring & upsetting to go through every week. I had to let my manager know that I will no longer be doing her grocery shopping because of the way I am treated when I go. read more

They have the hand held scanners that let you ring up your purchases as you shop and then check out without the unload/reload step which is nice. This Stop & Shop is my least favorite to go to, the carts never roll correctly, I'm always stared at because the cart sounds like the wheels are square and it's about to fall apart and my eggs are going to smash all of the floor and I slip on them and then people point and laugh at me. But before that you can't even find carts, they're either strewn about the parking lot because people are rude and can't return their carts, and because they don't actually bring them inside. The produce aisle is decent enough but very spread out and no idea where I have to look for certain things, I want broccoli it's very difficult to find and always seems to move each week. My next complaint is the meat/chicken/pork separation... I have no idea where to find each of them, they have the organic chicken mixed with normal chicken and it's very frustrating to find ma dang organic chicken! So lastly, they never seem to have enough staff at the registers and I have to wait to check out for at least 20 minutes when I go on a Sunday, OPEN MORE REGISTERS please for the love of groceries! it's the only one around though so I'm not sure they're going to make many changes as they are simply busy by default. :/ read more

I have a complaint about the bottle room! There used to be a phone in there where you could call the service desk if there was a problem with the machines. Who's bright idea was it to remove it? The night shift leaves the machines full so the day shift has to remove and do maintenance to get them going for the day. Who is the supervisor of the night crew anyway? Carts are left all over the parking lot. Wake up people, you are running a business here. Never see these issues in East Hampton! read more

Without exception, all staff members at this store should be required to attend finishing school....manners, courtesy, customer service, are almost non existent. I know management pulls from a very limited group of employees but if that's all they can find, they should make sure everyone is trained in simple etiquette when dealing with the public. I had the BEST experience at stop and shop recently. Today, i was feeling a little hungry. So i decided to go to my local stop and shop and pick up some pre made fried chicken. It's my favorite. I decided to go into Chloe's line, a young looking pretty girl. She asked me how my day was and we had a great conversation. I ams pretty lonely and i only have my cats to talk to, so going into public and having nice workers start conversation with me is such a pleasurable experience. This Stop and Shop is clean always stocked and the best part is they have plenty of self service registers!! The reason for the one star is they have the worst staff I have ever experienced in a place of business! If it were not for the self service registers, I would not shop there. The employees are very unfriendly and not professional and most of the time just rude! Locally I've heard this store referred to as the Stop and Rob because the prices here are higher than in other areas. When I first moved to Colchester I was told that the higher prices in some stores was due to the fact that we were in New London county vs. Hartford county so it was considered a distribution expense and stores raised the prices. We only shop here when absolutely necessary and for few items even though we are only a few miles away. Instead we will plan a trip to BJs in Willimantic or Aldi's in Lisbon to stock up on items. BTW the prices at the Stop and Shop in Norwichtown seem more reasonable than here in Colchester and they are still in NL county! Can't wait for Big Y in Marlborough! read more

WOW! Apparently they have a new manager who is borderline psychotic! I've been in Colchester for 55 years and been shopping at the local markets all my life. I went in to return an item today and brought the item in to the courtesy desk as I normally would however instead of saying Hello Sir, you can just go get a fresh item, I got the third degree. Show me whats wrong with the item, show me your slip, show me your card, show me your driver license..........I was waiting for them to strip search me to look for identifying marks. When I inquired as to the new Secret Police Shakedown, the girl whom I've known since she started working there said, I am so sorry, it's the new manager and she proceeded to point him out. He was in the process of reprimanding an employee for bagging the groceries of a woman who used self check out saying, "She Chose Self Checkout, That Means She Can Bag Her Own Items". I was aghast! I passed by the man and headed to my car and when I was seated in my vehicle, saw this same man taking the license plate numbers of people who mistakenly parked in the "OnLine Pickup Area". Stop and Shop should take a hard look at this mans management practices. They stand to lose a lot of trade doing this and he obviously has some sort of control disfunction that he is feeding at the expense of the stores customers and profits. I have heard of poor customer service but never a person dedicated to driving the customers away. Good Work! read more

I live in Colchester and shop at stop and shop all the time, 1 am upset about all the complaints from so meamany people... I like the store I live a mile from your store and like everything about it.. I shop for things that are on sale and always save money. The store is very clean. Go to Shoprite in Norwich if you want to see a dirty store they may have cheaper prices but not as good as Stop and shop. One of the sales clerk has the best attitude her name is Bernie (sp) she is always very pleasant. read more

I never can find half the things I need. Especially a lot of Natures Promise things that you promote as great products!! Your shelves are empty where the products should be. Your chicken that's cooked in the store is usually dry and look like they hang around all day. Your store needs help and better management. Now I have to drive to another Stop and Shop 20 minutes away. You are loosing me as a customer and many people have been going to other stores. It's so cold in that store that you need to dress for winter even in the summer!! It's sad that we can't support our store 5 minutes away from our house! read more
