After living away from Saint John, Indiana for 26 years, I just moved back two months ago. This is my first time going to Strack & Van Til in St. John as it didn't exist before. I have had nothing but a great experience every time I've been in the store. The store is very clean. Prices are decent. The employees are very friendly and helpful. I especially appreciate Jamie K. I had accidentally left behind $20 with the cashier who notified Jamie to stop me from leaving the store. Jamie ended up running out to the parking lot and caught up with me to give me the money. Went to this Strack and Van Til because the one that I typically go to in Schererville had no power. This location had very low inventory, I am guessing the frozen and refrigerated shelves were cleared out due to the recent storm power outages that have devastated Northwest Indiana recently. We were able to get what we needed here and will probably go back to our usual Stracks in the future but, it was nice to experience something new. Prices were the same as we normally pay at the other location. This location seemed slightly smaller but, it is laid out well and easy to find what you need. read more

Their digital coupons are SO CONFUSING and weird. It's time consuming to shop here. The layout is horrible, and the staff couldn't care less at this point. Every few years and sale will bring me in, and I'm hardly reminded why I never shop at any of their locations. read more

I went to Stracks in St John tonight to do my weekly shopping and fill my water cooler jugs. It was 9:20p and customer service desk was closed although store is open until midnight. I needed some singles to use the water refill machine so I asked the cashiers if I could get $5 or $10 in singles. There were no customers at either register and the older lady told me I would have to buy something to get change and I said I was buying water and will be shopping after that. She then said with a very snippy attitude that it didn't matter I will have to buy a candy bar to get change. I was livid! With Jewel moving in across the street soon this type of customer service and attitude was terrible! I finished the two jugs I had started refilling and left to do the rest of my shopping at Jewel. Shame on you Strack & Van Til (Hyvee) for failing your customers! This has been said by many not just me! One more thing, the young lady bagging, on her own, looked in her purse to try and help me get change. Kudos to her customer service! read more

I reviewed this store before that noted the expired dates on things. Since then, I have accidentally purchased items that were spoiled and it wasn't apparent until I opened the bag - potatoes, oranges, onions and more. The standard response is "oh, you should have just brought it back". There were English muffins that had green mold on them on the shelf. When I brought it to the service desk, the response was "the bread company stocks the shelves". Who cares? You're selling it moldy bread! Be careful when shopping here! read more

Last minute, friends coming over. Ran to Strack for some Fried Chicken, veggies and fruit. As you can see from the pictures, I ordered and paid for 4 breasts, 4 thighs and 4 legs. As I put the chicken on a platter to serve they gave me 4 legs, 3 breasts and 3 thighs. I was irritated and reviewed my receipt and noticed that the 2 lbs of red grapes ($1.49/lb) was rung up as Sweet Cherries ($3.99/lb). On this quick trip for a pickup dinner I was overcharged almost $9.00. Outrageous and inexcusable. One star is too much! read more

I appreciate the very kind and gracious service I received on Sunday, July 19th from customer service. My husband and I had went shopping here on Saturday and purchased cod fillets. Unfortunately, the fish never arrived home. When I called on Sunday to let customer service know, she kindly told me to come in and pick some more up at no charge to us. Omg what to say: young man at check proceeded to tell people in line how sick he was , but so proud he came to work anyway. In what world do people think we want them to spread germs to everyone in line. Could not hear conversation but then for some reason he put his foot with the shoe on it upon counter to show person ahead of something on his leg. I placed an order for flowers for Mother's Day. Nicole was my associate who helped with the order and she made the arrangement. She did an amazing job! The flowers are reasonably priced. Nicole made the arrangement like it came from an expensive flower shop. Needless to say I will be using Nicole from Stracks in St. John for all my flower needs. I give it three stars for convenience of location. The staff is just ok. Thru have got better at being polite. Prices are outrageous snd thru carry very little toiletries which is annoying! Lines are typically long and baggers need to be trained properly. Meat is always way over priced and not good quality at all! Same with fruit and milk. Spoils quickly. Definitely not my first choice for grocery stores! read more

3 times this year I have had issues with this store. 1st- bought something in February that expired the December before. I shouldn't have to check date, but have going forward. 2nd - End cap had one listed price $2.99, rang up $5.49 3rd- overcharged multiple times for same item. Aldi doesn't have these problems. There food is great for the prices. Stracks is expensive for mediocre goods. Fruit is usually not great, and expensive. read more

This is a very clean store! They have a larger selection of groceries than some of the other stores. The produce here is quite fresh & the bakery has a fair amount of choice! There is Vegan/Vegetarian specialty options available... if you can't find what you need, ask a manager & they will most likely try to get it! read more

My favorite place to shop, of course it is also close to home and that way the ice cream will not melt! Produce is hit or miss and they usually have a decent sale. Meat sales are pretty decent and once a month they have a stock up sale. People are friendly and the people at the deli are usually pretty cool. If you come at closing time they get a little sketchy. This last time I came 15 min before the deli closed and the older lady helping me kept hemming and hawing the while time. She was trying to go so fast she slopped and dropped stuff and then got more frustrated and even snapped at the other workers. Yikes!! My experience has mostly been good with only minor run ins with the staff. Usually my biggest problem is rude customers! read more

Strack and Van Til at one time was known as the neighborhood grocery. Their top management has changed recently, and is managed by a former jewel and Albertsons Co. CEO.The prices have increased dramatically, all one has to do is do some comparative shopping and you will see Strack and Van Til is no longer customer friendly. In talking to vendors and employees they say Jeff Strack has thrown the company the employees and the customers under the corporate bus. They also conclude that Jeff is a corporate suck up There are other places to shop in this area with better prices better produce(Meijer) and far better meat. If you want top quality meat and a fantastic selection try Rob's meat market in Dyer Indiana. I have been a loyal stracks Customer for over 40 years what I have seen recently, would make the founders hang their head in shame. Strack and Van Til survived when Omni and Dominic's were in Schererville and are now on the same course of large corporate mismanagement. Over time customers will let the top management know of their displeasure by shopping elsewhere. Jeff's Strack said recently the newly remodeled Schererville store is like Disneyland. I believe Jeff is living in Cinderella's Dream Castle. read more

Excellence and Equibility: Shop at the St. John Strack's. The store manager, Kevin, is a fair and reasonable man inclined more to reason than rigidity and wholly aware of the fact that a retail establishment is beholden to its customers--not they to it. Kevin adroitly defused a sticky situation on Friday, July 19th. The previous day, my wife and I had visited his store looking to capitalize on an advertised sale. We were mistakenly informed by a meat department employee that subject sale didn't begin until the 19th. This was disappointing insomuch as I'm wheelchair bound and get about routine tasks like grocery shopping with considerable difficulty. Nevertheless, I recognize and acknowledge the orthodoxies of 21st Century capitalism. We would return, my wife and I, in 24 hours and make our purchases then. The next morning comprised the usual routine of transfers from wheelchair to car to wheelchair etc. etc.--ad nauseum. Upon arriving at the St. John Strack and Van Til store, we were informed the sale was indeed a ONE day sale that didn't start until the FOLLOWING DAY. Disappointment gave way to anger. The time had come for a talk with the store manager. The ensuing conversation's details are better left to inference. What merits mention is the conversation's reasonable, equitable, wholly satisfying outcome. Kevin graciously validated my position, apologized for the misunderstanding, and provided the desired item at the advertised sale price. I was particularly impressed by the manner in which he refrained from making a scapegoat of his mistaken employee. Kevin is a man whose focus runs more to resolution than blame. Groceries I can get anywhere. Balance and fairness are far rarer, and available daily at the St. John Strack's. Ask for Kevin. read more
