This movie theater is amazing. It puts you right back in time with all the decor and memorabilia. As well as the extremely affordable prices. It's run by a couple and they have been owning it and running it by themselves for years. One of my favorite features of this movie theater is they sell all of the movie posters that they get from the production companies. I have several that I got for six dollars each from Marvel Studios. They decorate this one hallway as well with dozens upon dozens of vintage cameras. I could spend hours just staring at them. Please make this part of your next visit. Even if you don't see a movie to step in and enjoy the shock and awe. read more

Old-timey movie theater with the original cameras and new posters lining the walls, it is such a great way to see a movie. They have all new showings that you can currently find in an AMC and show some movies with open-captions or 3D (check their website to see the times/type of movie). The staff is super friendly and they have lots of drinks, snacks, popcorn, and candy to choose from - they even offer popcorn to go if you're craving it! I absolutely love coming here and you should definitely plan to stop here on your trip/visit. The Strand is one of those places that will make you reminisce about your childhood or utter the phrase "They don't make 'em like they used to" out loud. It is quaint, eccentric, cozy, colorful, delightful. The lobby is packed to the brim with movie posters, toys, tchotchkes and art. There is a very thorough concession stand with any candy you could want, drinks, and the old classic, popcorn. I believe there are three theaters; on the way to the "small" one - down the hallway to the right, the hallway is lined with antique and vintage camera equipment. This is just one of the coolest spots in town and has so much charm. Don't expect oversized, cushioned seats, or state of the art screens/sound. The Strand more than makes up for it in ambiance and experience. They also show more independent films than the local chain-operated venue. Support small theater and visit the Strand! read more

So, I have been coming to Old Forge in the Adirondacks for years. I've passed this movie theater 1000 times and said Sunday We should go in together and watch a movie. Well this weekend my wife and I were up here by ourselves and decided we would go. Being a Predator fan I thought I should see the latest take. We went into the theater and there was a old-time ticket booth, cash only, and ticket cost $7. Oh yeah! We got our popcorn and began walking to the theater. It was like walking through the 1920s 30s and 40s. Old-time cameras pictures, movie reels, movie projectors. Incredible. There was so much memorabilia that we couldn't even see the door to the theater. We went in and of course it was regular seating and a big screen. The movie was in digital. And the sound was fantastic. The movie was good but I was expecting more. Oh they also have three theaters which looking at the outside he wouldn't think there was room. Definitely got $7 worth on this one. I'd go again when it's raining. Oh yeah, did I mention that there were 6 people in the theater. Love it. Felt like date night. read more

This place is amazing! My husband and I love to visit independent movie theaters when we travel and we've never seen anything like the Strand. It's part film museum and part movie theater. You can tell that the owners absolutely love film and are totally jazzed about owning this place. The proof is in the details. The first thing I noticed before walking in was that every lightbulb in the marquee outside was lit and the bulbs are multi-colored, not just white! This may sound like an insignificant thing but how many times have you seen theater marquees with burnt out lights? It's like they don't care or didn't notice or perhaps can't afford to replace them. Not a good sign either way in my opinion. The lobby area is really cool and looks like it was recently restored to its original condition, including the old fashioned ticket booth right near the door. Their tickets even have smiley faces on them! The concession stand is stocked with tons of options at very reasonable prices. They even have a sweet dog that hangs out and greets people in an aloof husky kind of way, not an annoying yappy dog kind of way. The theaters are well ventilated and clean (no stale air and sticky floors!) The seats are new & comfortable with the requisite cup holders. The sound is great and the screens are large. Basically everything you look for in a theater. But the absolute best part of the entire Strand experience is their impressive collection of old still and film cameras, photos of other classic theaters across the country and the world (I found four photos of theaters in Cuba!), old movie posters, etc. on display down the hall towards each of the theaters. You could literally spend hours looking at everything! The Strand Theater is really the best movie theater I've ever visited. read more

Best Theatre Ever. The Strand is the thing that I miss the most about living in Old Forge. Whenever my sister visited she wanted to go to the strand at least twice. This theatre has been refurbished from the 1930s with a purple, gold, and teal motif. The hallway to the three smaller theaters is packed with the owners amazing film equipment, and movie memorabilia collection. It's so inexpensive $7 for an evening show, and $6 for a matinee, and there's kids discounts!!! Their concessions are a dream, you can get hot tea for $1. They carry Ben & Jerry's ice cream pints for the same prices as a grocery store. There's a popcorn loving Husky that lives in the lobby. read more

What up amazing movie theatre!? I love this place. We went to see "The Watch" a few weeks ago and our group pretty much filled the 36-40ish seat theatre for that showing. It was really small but cozy. There are TONS of movie memorablia, cameras, film strips, posters, etc. We've been going here for years when we're up during the summer and it's just campy and fun. I believe it is currently $7 for a showing which is expensive for the Adirondacks but dirty cheap and worth it for this theatre. They also have an insane selection of Ben and Jerry's which is a delicious movie snack. The rest of the snacks are more affordably priced but I was hooked on that. read more

OK so the Strand doesn't have the stadium seating or the fancy sound systems of the big theaters, but it does have something much more valuable, that's character. From the minute you hit the ticket booth, you know this isn't like the Regal back home, the ticket taker is probably part owner and friendly. As you head to your movie the halls are covered in old time movies memorabilia, from old projectors, marquees, and posters. I was nearly left dumb founded when I happened upon this and I nearly missed my movie as I spent time poking through all the old stuff. It was pretty cheap too, I think it might have been about $6 to see a film on its opening weekend. I highly recommend checking this place out, it really is a gem hidden in Old Forge and I hope it stays around for a long time to come. read more

My family and I have a cottage in the Adirondacks where we spend our summers living every year. We always make sure to spend Friday or Saturday nights as a family watching movies at the Strand. This theater is wonderful. It has always been something so unique to visit and relax. This theater is beautiful and kept very clean. The owners and workers are always very friendly, and make every visit enjoyable! The snack bar is loaded with nachos, candy, and even pints of Ben and Jerrys ice cream! This is by far the coolest little movie theater I've ever been to. Nestled in the heart of Old Forge this independent movie theater has 4 auditoriums playing up-to-date big name movies. The main theater is pretty big (if you don't compare to places like AMC or Lowes) and holds about 400, two other theaters are mid-sized and hold 180 & 120 people, and one of the theaters is amusingly tiny and holds about 30 people. Unfortunately the seats aren't tall enough to have head rests, don't recline, and aren't really tiered, but they are clean and comfortable none the less. Movies are $6 for adults and refreshments are priced unlike any theater I've been to with candy going for about $1.75 and the popcorn (which they didn't have any when I was there) and soda not being much more. In addition to the refreshments they also sell movie posters used in the theater ($6/ea) and 35mm rails of movie previews ($3). These were ones used in the theater so great classics have long since been sold but they're all main stream movies and the chance to buy the actual 35mm preview was completely unique. Adding to the Strands uniqueness is their hallway leading to the back movie theaters full of old still and movie cameras and memorabilia (with no order to any of it) which was a great way to kill time before a movie. They also have an unofficial theater mascot hanging around the entrance (a beautiful and friendly tan Alaskan Malamute). Recently Strand (which opened in 1923) went through a renovation in 2008 which didn't make it loose any of it's small town charm but just added impeccably clean theaters with new seats. The picture and audio quality is also top notch, though I'm not sure if this was something they messed with during the renovation or not. Really there is no reason not to fall in love with this little theater. So don't wait for a rainy day to go and visit Strand and don't try and save $3 by going to the little rickety theater in Inlet. read more

This theater is like a second home to me ; I'm there constantly and I just love being there . The owners are super nice and always fun to see when I'm there , and having Noah the husky there is the best ! Super fluffy , super friendly , and always willing to lend a helping paw in cleaning up popcorn ;) the theaters are always clean when we're there and honestly the entire trip to the theater is a breeze . The employees are almost always nice and get you what you need in no time at all . It's honestly just a great environment to be in , plus the hallways are full to the brim on the walls with incredible film equipment from all across the timeline and it's so cool the check them out while walking down the halls . I go to this theater religiously and it's never been a negative experience in the 10-12 years I've been going there ! So as you can tell I HIGHLY recommend it visitors of Old Forge because locals already know how great it is ;) read more
