If you're a woman....don't go here. I used to get my hair done by Luisa, and she was incredible. She moved away, and so I booked an appointment with Miko. Went in for a bang trim and root retouch-up for my medium dark brown hair and curtain bangs. Ended up with roots looking the same color as my natural roots (black) and not what I asked for. The bangs were cut to look like a bowl cut. Ruined hair that I LOVED before coming in, even though I did not ask for a change in the slightest....Miko made rude/unprofessional/uncomfortable comments. We agreed on below my eyebrows, and my bangs now sit above my eyebrows. I am currently styling my hair, wearing the bangs back, and booked an appointment with a more trustworthy salon in December once they grow out again. It will take 1-2 months for my hair to get back to the shape it was in. During the bang trim, I told him directly to stop cutting because he was making it very, very short. He didn't listen and told me he knew what he was doing. Well, my bangs aren't curtain bang length anymore. My hair is one of my favorite and most distinctive features about me. Walked in confident & feeling good, walked out crying... Had to cancel and postpone my DMV appointment (new license picture), my first day of work is next week, and my birthday is the week after...safe to say I will be wearing a headband until whenever the bangs grow back to a length that would be plausible for curtain bangs....hopefully by 2026. Went to a more trustworthy salon the next day, and they told me they can't do anything until the bangs grow out and roots grow out to my virgin hair color (since they don't wanna bleach the roots)....Very upset...a huge waste of $100 to feel worse about myself....in this economy...crazy... read more

I've been going to Strands n Trends for 3 years now. Victor is a master stylist, to say the least. About 12 of my close friends and I also go to him on a weekly basis. He is the real deal. This was my first time visiting this salon, I got a GK keratin treatment with Ella. I have virgin hair, it's rarely styled and never been colored so I was surprised to see parts of my hair were still wavy on the third day after I received the treatment. Parts of my hair are smooth and other parts still have a wave and it's VERY noticeable. When getting the treatment there were a couple steps that were NOT done. My hair should have been washed 3 times (since it's virgin) and it was NOT. It should have been towel dried to remove the excessive moisture before applying the product and it was NOT. I paid $250 for a service but didn't get my moneys worth. This was my FIRST and LAST time I step foot in this salon. I WILL NOT be coming back and taking my business else where. read more

I've been going here for just under 3 years and for the most part have had a great experience overall. Victor is SUPER nice and gives a really good haircut - would definitely recommend him to any guy I know. Biggest issue I had is with their scheduling. Almost every single time I went in I wouldn't be seated until 15-20 minutes after my reservation was originally scheduled for. It got so bad that I would purposely show up late to my appointments knowing that I would have to wait if I showed up on time. I voiced my concern but their response was 'that's just the way it is.' The stylist I had been going to for 5 years retired from the industry in December so I had to find a new One. In February, on a whim, I wanted to get a cut based on my location. I yelped out a search and came up on Strands. From the moment I stepped in I could tell I was in a well run business. I was offered a beverage, it was very clean & inviting and most importantly, they were able to take me on time. My stylist, Yasinia, was very professional- asking me a bunch of questions of what I wanted and provided some recommendations- which I took. I had a great cut which came with a shampoo & conditioner along with a scalp message. Since my first visit in February I have been back twice. All 3 times I received the same great service and will continue to use S&Ts (And Yasinia!) for my hair care needs. Worth mentioning; theirs hours of operation are very accommodating (Open late during the week and early on the weekends) to those of us who can't get to the salon during the work day. I came here a couple months ago shortly after moving to the area and in search of a new hairstylist. I noticed them on the way to the train and looked them up online. Being one of the only places around that don't charge $50+ for a haircut I decided to give it a try. First off, my hairstylist was great, super nice, and she did a great job. Can't remember her name though. The establishment though was not upfront regarding their prices which is why I won't return. Their website says a haircut costs $25, or $35 with a master stylist. They didn't tell me when making my appointment that I would be with a master stylist. They also weren't upfront with the fact that styling is not included and so the 10 minutes it took her to dry my short hair and throw some pomade in it added on $15, making it a $50 haircut. Oh, but I got a 20% first time discount, the only reason I didn't complain. read more

Sorry to say things went downhill on my next couple of visits. Ella was not, in fact, able to cut my bangs without making them flat against my forehead (a look I decidedly do not care for). And on my last haircut, I was left with a big unruly chunk of hair sticking out when I clipped my hair up (the way I habitually wear it). When I called for a re-cut I was told by the woman on the phone, oh, yes, we guarantee our haircuts. But when I arrived for the re-cut, I was met with a surly attitude - a belligerent denial there was anything wrong and a demand that I should tell her how to fix it. I remarked that I couldn't possibly tell her that since I'm not a professional hairstylist. I'll leave out the rest of the sordid details of the "re-cut" experience. Suffice it to say, it was more than unpleasant. When I returned to my long-time previous hair stylist in another city a couple of months later, she said, "Gee, look at this. The whole left side of your hair is at least a half-inch longer than the right side." Aha. At last I understand where the big unruly chunk was coming from. As for the rest of the shop, it's a very nice place. I'm really sorry this wasn't handled more gracefully. I would have liked to keep coming here. read more

I came here in the middle of a hair crisis--big interview the next day and I looked fairly homely-looking since my last haircut was back in August. I saw that this place took walk-ins and the staff was happy to accommodate me without making me feel like a tool. The staff was friendly, helpful and upfront about answering my questions regarding prices (without making me feel like a cheapskate). As a grad student, I appreciate the lack of judgment that I know other places are quick to give to customers. My hairstylist was very personable, listened to what I said I wanted (and didn't want), and was meticulous with my haircut. While I still miss my old place back home (Rock Paper Scissors in Durham, NC!), I have no qualms going back to this place. Shay did a great job and was SUPER eager to have me back for my next haircut. The only constructive criticism I have is that their product-pushing was fairly insistent and obvious. While I'm down for spending some money on hair products that work, I don't really want to have a 5 minute spiel about the new mousse or gel...let the product speak for itself; but that's just my two-cents. Tim! Is! Best! Everybody seems to be raving about Tim, so I'll hop on the bandwagon: he's amazing. Does a great job of reducing/eliminating the Muppet head that my hair turns into after a month or so, and he's done an admirable job making my egregiously receding hairline look slightly less egregious. (It's a herculean effort, really.) For all of you concerned about awkward stylist conversations, I'll put you at ease: Tim's an ace conversationalist, and never in the least bit awkward if you just want to sit back and listen to the snip of the razor (or enjoy his head massages, which are amazing and probably inspire me to make really uncomfortable faces). We're both TV fanatics, though, so I prefer not to stay silent. Plus, Tim's just a wonderful guy, so I always wanna catch up. Can't recommend him highly enough. read more

I've been going here since I moved to Chicago and have not been let down. I've tried a few of there stylists, and they're all friendly, professional, and great at what they do. For the past nine months or so, I've been seeing Shay who is consistently excellent. This place is very professional, but it doesn't have the pretentious attitude that comes with some of the other salons I've been to. Everyone is very down to earth and friendly - from the owner the receptionist. They will try to sell you something here and there (its part of their business), but aren't going to be pushy about it. The location can't be beat - steps away from the Belmont stop, various bus routers, Starbucks (or Kickstand), tons of restaurants, and shops galore. If you are new to Chicago or are just looking for a new place to get your hair done - definitely try this place. read more

Here goes the play-by-play: I call this place a few hours before my scheduled haircut to confirm my appointment. The owner asks if I can come in earlier. Thanks for the late notice, but fine. So I drive from Wicker Park to Lakeview - mind you, it was about 30 minutes of sitting in traffic - excited about my haircut with Patty. I was pretty happy to find someone in the city that cuts my bangs just the way I like 'em. When I walk in, I see a different stylist coming to greet me. Wait what? Where's Patty? "Oh she's not with this salon anymore", says the manager lady. SERIOUSLY? Thanks for telling me after I just went half an hour out of my way to come here. For a woman, it's important to stay with a stylist that you trust. I'm very picky about my bangs and I would not have come back to this salon had I known someone else who I had never met would be cutting my hair. I was extremely disappointed, and the manager could tell, which is why she gave me 20% off for the inconvenience. I gave the new stylist a try. Was I happy with my cut? No. It didn't even look like he cut anything. The ends of my hair still looked frayed, and my bangs looked stupid. He tried to fix them and I stopped him right there - I didn't want him to mess them anymore! I'm sure they'll do a good job for someone who isn't too picky about their haircut. But the fact that they never notified me that MY stylist (who I had booked an appointment with two months ago) left the salon, and on top of that they did a mediocre job, is enough merit for why I will never be coming back. After tracking him down and finding out he is now at Strands & Trends, I immediately booked an appointment. I don't trust my Asian hair with a lot of people, but Gregory does an AMAZING job! Other than that, S&T is a pretty new salon and is located in a really convenient location...it's clean, trendy, and the people who work there are super nice. I've been coming to Strands and Trends for a few months now, and I'm definitely a fan at this point. Their staff is amazingly friendly and pretty accommodating. I've been able to make/cancel/reschedule appointments with no problem. They also have this really nifty point system that for various tasks you earn points that *SAVE YOU MONEY!* You get points for referring friends to to the salon, for each transaction you make, and for scheduling appointments ahead of time. It's been nice because you get to save a few dollars, which is always nice. The stylists are very nice--I've seen two different stylists. They were both great; they took the time to really figure out what I wanted in my haircut and got it right. I'm really indecisive about how I get my hair cut, and the stylists are always helpful (and patient) with me as I figure out what's right for me. They are pretty good for men's haircuts--and the price is actually reasonable. $25 for a men's haircut--which is definitely great compared to what I've paid other places. Weirdly though, I've rarely seen women in the salon when I've been there, so I don't think I'm alone in going there for a men's haircut. My one complaint is that I'm pretty strange about not wanting to put product in my hair, and I feel like the stylists shun me a bit about this. This isn't unique to Strands and Trends, but sometimes I just wish that there would be a salon where I wouldn't be judged for my laziness about my hair styling! The environment is pretty nice. It's really clean, which is great for a salon. I've been a few places that just don't seem clean enough, and that grosses me out. There have been a few times where my appointment has started a bit later than it was scheduled for, which is a little annoying, but that's not that big of a deal. I've received three haircuts now from Ella at Strands and Trends and I know that I'm now a lifer. I can only speak to my experiences with her, but aside from being a great stylist, she's always incredibly polite, attentive, and have a great charm to her. It always makes for a more pleasant haircut when you can sit back and enjoy a few laughs throughout the appointment. As for the appointments, she's incredibly easy to work with and the professional-grade haircut (I'm a guy) with a shampoo and style cannot be beat - it's only $25. You can tell that her entire staff is knowledgeable and gives great care to their clientele because there are always customers coming in and it's rarely slow. I have ridiculously thick, curly hair that goes down just past my shoulders. I wanted to chop most of it off a few months ago, as it is heavy and I didn't want to deal with it when it was hot. Enter Ella of Strands and Trends, who told me that was a big mistake. A very big one. I have never been one to get upset when "too much" hair was cut off, or cry over a haircut. My hair grows so quickly, it's not a big deal to me. But, I listened to her. She promised to make my hair lighter by cutting short layers all over, and thinning it out in the process. And it worked.
