A few years ago, I had just moved here & was buying furniture at ikea. The girl checking out in front of me had curly hair and an amazing cut, so I asked her where she got her hair cut at-- and she said Sylvia at Strands. I called up, made an appointment & have been going there ever since. Sylvia is very good at cutting curly hair & even better at blowing curly hair out (I judge blow outs based on how panicked the person looks about 3/4's of the way through when they pull out their mega irons-- I know that's a bad sign & that I will end up looking like a sad cockerspaniel). Sylvia is able to do it all with a hair dryer & it always looks amazing & I always get at least a couple of days out of it-- and the prices are totally reasonable. The only downside is that you definitely have to call at least a week in advance to get an evening/Fri/Weekend appointment with her-- which I'm not so great at doing (I'm much more of a drop in, or call day before, appointment person), but that just means she's popular with us curly haired people. Also, as others have mentioned, tips need to be in cash, which is super annoying, but not unusual for salons. read more

I get bored really easy and always dye my hair Sarah is such a wonderful colorist and really listens to what you want ! Its hard to go from black to blonde to red to brown and back to black with out damaging your hair and Sarah can make it happen she works miracles! You have to make an appointment with Sylvia! I went in there 3 months ago and I trusted her with my long hair, I told her, "do what you want with it". She gave me the best long hair cut I've ever had. I got compliments from all my friends and it inspired a few of them to ask for the same "long A line cut" from their stylist but of course it didn't come out the same. I have been going to Strands for years now. My hair is cut by Jeffrey who does an amazing job. Everyone who works at the salon are very nice and friendly. Glenda who works the front desk gets to know each of the customers and their names so when you walk in she knows who you are and who your stylist is. You can see that the stylists are there because they want to be there and they have fun doing it. I've also gotten an updo for my brother's wedding at Strands. And they did an amazing job. My family has been going to Strands for a few years, off and on. We've had some OK experiences and some really good ones, so I've shopped around to see if there's a secret place I haven't discovered yet for kids (no, I haven't found anything worth my loyalty yet). The stylists here are very friendly. I took my 2 girls, ages 7 and 9, to get their medium length hair trimmed and cleaned up. We met Jenna for the first time and she took care of both my girls. I'm used to expecting just OK results with my kids cuts, but I have to say, she did a great job! 3 days later, no product or styling, and I'm still admiring their cuts. She seemed to hear what I was saying without making me feel like I didn't know anything about hair. Great job Jenna! read more

I can't imagine going anywhere else for my hair. I have seen Sylvia for my last four cuts/highlights, and each time she has done a beautiful job. The first time I saw her was after another salon butchered my hair...she gave me a beautiful short cut at my request (to lop off the damage) and has continued to keep my hair looking good as it has slowly grown out over the last year. I went to Deane at Strands for a haircut because of a five star review. The reviewer who has fine hair described the great haircut she got from Deane. I completely agree with her assessment because like her I have fine hair and I got the best haircut I have ever gotten. I had almost given up on getting a stylish haircut because of my hair texture. The cut she gave me fits my face and has such great movement. I am thrilled. Deane really works with you. She is a perfectionist. She was as excited about the results as I was with the results. She turned me on to this amazing conditioning treatment you can add on to your service and it has made a huge difference in my hair. I started getting my hair cut here about a year ago. I asked my friend where she got her hair cut, and she said Eileen G. was great. I used to get my haircuts at a place in Burlingame, but the guy there was always afraid to cut my hair short and he never cut off enough. I like Eileen because she's excellent at short cuts and she does what I ask her to. On my first visit, she cut off about five inches and gave me a bob. I loved it! I haven't gone anywhere else since. Her blow outs are excellent as well and they have the option of just a cut, so I could blow dry at home to save a few bucks if I wanted to. The salon is always clean and the staff are friendly. And as a bonus, they send out coupons and give discounts for referrals. I recommend Eileen to anyone who's not afraid to chop it off!!! read more

DO NOT GO HERE I went in for a trim and to get bangs. I went on to my hairstylist about how long it took me to grow out my layers, and that I really didn't want much off the lenth. A TRIM! Why is it that I have chin length layers in my hair? I even brought a picture. She asked if she could cut off an inch and a half, I said only an inch. Some of my layers are nearly 10 inches shorter than my hair was. Terrible, and now it takes me forever to do my hair in the morning. Thanks for wasting the last three years of growing out my hair! Starting around March 2015, I regularly started seeing Lisa for nail services every other week, and occasionally every 3 weeks. I was happy that my nails eventually grew out and were strong. During my appointments, Lisa normally asked why I never got a pedicure. I would tell her I was not interested and the extra expense was something I just did not have. I politely listened to her explain what she does for a pedicure, but it still did not change the fact I could not afford the extra expense. At one of my appointments I wore my "Narcolepsy: Not Alone" T-shirt. I like to wear it in support of Narcolepsy Awareness because I have narcolepsy with cataplexy and the diseases are completely misunderstood. At another appointment after I wore my T-shirt, Lisa said to me "Sometimes I get so sleepy I do this," Lisa began to close her eyes and drop her head. I immediately asked her, "Are you making fun of narcolepsy?" Lisa grinned and laughed, but said nothing. I reluctantly sat through the remainder of the appointment, I paid, made another appointment. After careful thought, I cancelled my appointment the night before. A couple of weeks go by, Lisa texts my personal cell phone: "Hi Allison, this is Lisa nail (from strand's) how are u? How is ur nails? Long time I didn't see u! Are u alright? I'm so worry about u. Hope u have a great week and weekend, will see u soon. Lisa nail *kissy face emoticon*" When I responded to politely tell her how I felt, that what she said and gestured was completely out of line. She asked "Was it that mean?" This behavior is not acceptable when you are paying and tipping someone to do your nails for 6 months. read more

I am very impressed with Danae: she had to "fix" my hair color after another stylist out of town did not leave me happy. Danae did a great job with highlights: my color looks exactly as I wanted and she really took care of protecting the health of my hair. Her personality is very pleasant (not a small thing if you are stuck in the salon for a couple of hours). I liked the fact that she did not "bad mouth" the stylist who did prior work, but took time to listen to my concerns. The cost of her service is very reasonable when I compare it with prices I had to pay elsewhere. I am certainly coming back and my mother (who is very picky and critical) is going to try her as well: she liked my hair that much. read more
