I guess it's because there's a barbershop right next door and the main entrance to this salon is a bit smaller and less noticeable. I called to book an appointment and was surprised to get a prime Saturday time just a few days out. My hair was in desperate need of some TLC, and I was prepared to wait a few weeks, but was glad they could squeeze me in earlier. I was scheduled with Lyn, who is one of their senior stylists. She had me fill out an intake form, which is something that no other salon has ever had me do. I came prepared with some photo examples of what I wanted, so the whole experience was a little over an hour (they allot 1.5 hours for first time haircut). Lyn listened to what I wanted and also said I could come back within a week or two for any adjustments and they also offer a complimentary bang trim between appointments. She also gifted me a little welcome package with coupons and a couple hair product samples. The salon is much bigger than I thought. It goes quite deep and there's tiny rooms that separate people out, so it's not the typical open space layout. I liked how unique it was, not just the space, but the experience and the commute! I used to drive over to Daly City, but now I prefer to stay closer to home and I can get here by foot!

Since the salon is located in Downtown Redwood City, there will not be any free parking as everything is metered street parking - Bring some quarters. Spruce Salon is taking every Covid-19 precaution possible - Only a limited number of stylists are allowed to work at a time {with chairs more than 6 feet apart}, each stylist is only allow to service one client at a time, both the stylist and the client must wear a mask the entire time and a temperature check is given prior to entering the salon. All of these procedures made me feel super comfortable in being in a salon again. My husband has been going to Spruce for years for his haircuts and raved about Nicole, so I decided to give her a shot when going in for a full highlight and a haircut - I am beyond thrilled to have found Nicole - She is a Hair Genius! I am a very easy going person and my hair is the one thing that I can tend to get picky about so I usually go into a salon with several pictures of what I am looking for {and as someone who previously managed salons/spas for years and years, I know this can be a stylists nightmare} - Nicole was amazing and looked through all of my pictures and I put my trust in her to see my vision - She exceeded what I was looking for 10 fold! Not only is she a stellar stylist, but she is beyond friendly and really listens to the clients needs/wants. The pricing is very comparable to other salons in the area, and in my opinion, it was less than I was looking to spend for such a great experience. I had my hair cut by Patty and she did not listen to what I wanted done. I told her I wanted a…read moretrim, and because I have very thin and fine hair, I didn't want layers since I'm trying to maintain as much volume as possible. She suggested long layers, which I thought just meant adding some subtle layering near the ends. So I agreed but emphasized that I wanted very minimal layers. She ended up thinning out my ends and making my hair look thinner and scraggly. The ends honestly looked like I hadn't gotten a trim in 6 months, which was what I had done and my hair looked better going in than when I came out. I told her that she thinned my hair out too much with the layering and she did not offer any apology, solutions or to try and fix it. During the haircut, she sprayed the spray bottle directly in my face, which added to the already uncomfortable experience. Overall, the entire experience left me feeling really disappointed and cheapened. The following day, I ended up getting my hair fixed at a different salon, and the new stylist was able to show me how unevenly my fringe pieces had been cut. I'm disappointed by the lack of communication and that my concerns about my fine hair weren't taken into account.
