I'm OBSESSED with Strange Bird after just one visit. We were sat right away on a Friday night outside with 6 people. The service was outstanding! The waiter was friendly but chill and had great recommendations. I would say the portions were smaller than usual, more like a big snack. But still everything we got was beyond delicious. The poke fries were ribbon fries, which we weren't expecting, but blew our minds. All of the skewers received rave reviews. And the Indian spiced hot chicken! This is a really fantastic place worth visiting. I am pregnant and got two of their NA cocktails (nolada and nojito) - both were worth it. Their ramen is top quality. A wondrous hidden gem unlike any restaurant in the state. It's not cheap but it's worth all the money you end up spending. The art and decor are well thought out and a special touch on the already amazing experience. The food is incredible. I've never eaten anything quite like it. I just love it. And on top of all that, the restaurant has a great collection of interesting music playing. It feels like a secret, this place. The restaurant isn't in a normal location for a restaurant. Yesterday was my first time at Strangebird. My wife and I met with Yelp Elite friends who love this place. It's a very low key spot. The music, food, drinks, and service were fantastic. For cocktails, my wife and I tried the Bird Bath, Classic Painkiller, Halekulani, and Scorpion Reef. As for food, we got a classic burger, chicken nuggets (they're amazing) with spicy bbq, and loaded fries with bacon. We had wonderful service and look forward to coming back in a couple weeks with another group of friends. I highly recommend the Scorpion Reef if you are into posting on social media. read more

I've always loved that Indy has a large variety of tiki bars to enjoy, especially when the weather is cold and dreary, it can feel like a tropical paradise. Strange Bird is the newest addition to the near east side and it's decor and drinks are divine. We loved the tasty island inspired cocktails and we even braved some oysters that you can purchase by the shell! There are real candles and a dim atmosphere to keep the atmosphere intimate and mysterious. Where to begin...my first visit to Strange Bird and one of my friend's second visit. She commented that the "vibe" on this visit was totally different. Strange is a great word as it was indeed a "strange" experience. The drinks were for the most part what you would find at a Tiki bar, as was the decor. Went with a Mojito which had an extreme over-abundance of mint including two stalks of mint as garnish that one of my dinner companions said looked more like mint trees than garnish. The menu claimed to be Japanese "comfort food" but seemed like a hodge podge instead. On offer were raw oysters, a shrimp cocktail, various cold noodle bowls or fried chicken wings with Japanese themed sauces. Okay...decided to try wings but the waitress looked confused that they were still on the menu and said that their fryer was down -- one can only wonder how long that has been the case. Not being a fan of raw oysters or cold noodle dishes I got the shrimp cocktail which was 8 rather small shrimp for $13. A couple of people took advantage of the happy hour special and got raw oysters with everyone else defaulting to a version of cold noodles. One other person said he wanted to order wings as well, but was out of luck as well. On to the service which was non-existant from our waitress after she took our order and made a cursory stop after a runner delivered our drinks and food. You'd have thought she'd been kidnapped by aliens. Guess when you have a party of 6 plus and know you're guaranteed a 20% tip from each person why bother to clear entree plates, ask for dessert orders (I flat out told her I would be ordering dessert when I ordered my entree...hint, hint), or see if anyone needed anything else. I finally managed to get the attention of the only other server in the place (as he pointedly looked every direction but at our table) and two of us got to order dessert. I made the mistake of taking his recommendation and ordered the pineapple tres leches cake which simply had a slice of pineapple put on top of basic tes leches cake and my fellow diner ordered the rum cake which was outstanding. None of the desserts fit the "Japanese comfort food" category. All in all a huge disappointment and the last time I will go to a restaurant whose menu I can't check out on-line before wasting my time and money. read more

I visited this place last night. I've heard nothing but great things and always wanted to try it since I live in the area. I planned on doing a carry out order and attempted to call ahead several times for about 10 minutes and never got anyone to answer. It is dimly lit inside and tiki themed. They were a little busy. I placed my order and they told me 20 minutes. It ended up being 45-50 minutes which was disappointing. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen and it was so good I honestly didn't care that I waited so long for it. I was also surprised that it was still at a great temperature once I got home. The PODS are so fun! Each decorated like it's own exclusive tiki bar VIP lounge to make quaint dinner dates possible even in these times of the 'rona! This place is the bomb! I saw they had outdoor heated pods and had to check it out. There are ten in total so i suggest getting there when they open if you want to sit down right away. We got there right at 5 and there was no wait at all, the fires outside were going to stay warm if there had been. The pods have a heater inside and stay pretty warm, a blanket isn't a bad idea tho. The drinks were pricey but AMAZING! I had the pain killer, it was fruity and refreshing. My boyfriend had the Mai tai, he enjoyed it but it was a little strong for my taste. The food was also pretty good. I had the Coney with chili and cheese. My boyfriend had the heartbreak Burger and that was better in my opinion. I'm excited for this addition to Irvington. I had a chance to visit Strange Bird when I was visiting Indy a month ago and I was very impressed. They have a great tiki drink menu. I was only able to try it a few of these lovely drinks, but am looking forward to going back and trying out more. The ambiance is super fun inside so much that you forget that it may be cold and dreary outside. The service is excellent and our server was wonderful in suggesting different drinks to us. They have a limited small plate menu available which is perfect to snack from while enjoying your drink. It is no secret that I love all things Tiki. I don't venture to Irvington much, but for a Tiki I will travel. Strange bird Indy is Irvingtons little hole in the wall Tiki Oasis. It is much more casual and easier to navigate seating than my other fave Tiki nearby. I have been twice this Winter and both times I have walked in and been seated and served promptly. The Husband liked the music. They also have Guinness on tap now if you are about that sort of thing. The drink menu is substantial and carefully curated. The best thing yet- most cocktails and appetizers are at 10.00 or under! It's a steal. There is ample parking and the staff are very attentive. It's less flashy but still charming in my book.
