No room to sit but the donuts make up for it in creativity and flavor. The novelty of donuts aside, Strange brings a smile through their individuality: just follow them on any social media. The Strangers switch up and can be a little costly (they cost a solid fiver). Though occasionally you gotta live a little. The "gift cards" are little wooden tokens for a free half dozen of dones and honestly it may have been one of my favourite Christmas presents. The OG strange donut location. I walked in on a whim to escape the rain and found myself confused on if I was in the front of the shop. They had tons of donut racks crowding the front shop, but an employee quickly came up to start talking making things seem a little less "strange." They only had 3 donut varieties on display in the middle of the day but several others on the racks. I opted for a classic blue frosting with sprinkles donut. The frosting must have still been setting because when I looked in my bag half of it dripped off like goop! The frosting flavor was good, hard to make sugar taste bad. But the donut was a little try and didn't do it for me. Decently priced donuts if you're in the area, but nothing to brag home about in terms of quality or flavor. read more

Strange Donuts is fast...so this review will be too! Here are a few of the facts that you need to new about this Maplewood donut shop that has quickly put itself on the StL donut map: 1.) They have creative donuts - Though "gimmicky," "awesome," or "over-the-top" could all have been used instead of "creative," that's just about the most catch-all term you can use for this place. I mean, they have maple-bacon and gooey butter cake-flavored concoctions here, and they are grrrrrrreat! This ain't no run-of-the-mill donut shop. 2.) It's not cheap - Creativity comes at a cost, and that cost gets as high as $2 for one of their specialty donuts mentioned above. They have lower cost, more traditional options as well, just don't expect to buy one of their namesake creations with the change in the copilot of your car. 3.) The branding is fantastic - Their slogan is "Stay Strange." They've got a hypnotic light blue color scheme. They have a kick ass, clean-cut tumblr that still shows off their signature edge. It's called "Strange Donuts" for goodness sake! Strange Donuts is one of my favorite treats on the way to work!! The selection is ever changing and so diverse. Additionally, the donuts taste SO great. Most are what I would describe as a cake donut with the real flair coming from the wild topping selections. I also love, love the people working here. They are always so incredibly friendly and start my day off well. Shoutout to the man working this morning who was simply a great human. When it first opened, they were so yummy and innovative, but now they types of donuts they have aren't anything special and lately taste like they were baked then frozen. They do "weekend specials" that always look so yummy, but I've gone on Saturdays and they're already sold out. It's really, really unfortunate the way they've slipped. Stopped here around 10am on a Friday. Friendly service, and no line. We were disappointed to spend $20 on donuts that seemed a couple days old. We've been here before and they seemed so fresh. Today the icing was very hard on the glaze and fat Steve donuts and the dough was stale. Somehow they still tasted pretty decent, which says a lot about how wonderful they are when fresh! I finally had the chance to try one. Let me tell you every single time they were at a tasting... out. Line out the door so that won't work. And anytime someone brings them .. they would be out way before I even found out they were there. I wonder if you have to get to Strange Donuts early in the morning when the donuts are fresh to actually enjoy them. I can't possibly say the donuts are bad because let's be real, they're donuts. Serendipity We were yelping for coffee in Maplewood. Coffee joints were closed. We had parked close to this place. We thought OK, coffee + doughnuts. How can we lose? Shabby sheik outside with the sky blue and white colors. We entered to find a smiling young woman with a stack of doughnut trays behind her. She gave us the dollar tour, about .30 secs. explained the offerings. Two little dogs were waiting inside and were corralled by a young guy. Guess it's a pet friendly place! We picked of course a maple bacon and something else, I can't remember. We got our coffee and ate in our car. It's an eclectic little place that has a great following with scads of local endorsers. Like many before me in this string of Yelp reviews, I had been anticipating the opening of this donut shop for months. I first heard about the concept/ "coming soon" business in the spring of 2013. Since then delays prevented the opening until this fall. The day finally came, I had two meetings in the office and thought "I'm going to be the cool one here today. I'm getting Strange Donuts for my co-workies." I stopped by SD at about 8AM on a Thursday and there was a short line, not bad at all. Scratching my head a bit at which donut name went with which decadent treat, I just asked the nice gentleman tending the front what his suggestions were. I ended up buying one specialty dozen and one regular dozen which added up to about $36 total. A bit much for donuts, but I get it, these are SPECIALTY donuts, so it's all good. Note here: I was surprised that while unusual, the flavor offerings were not so strange and outlandish. Sure butterfinger and M 'n M flavor donuts are not your run of the mill option, but I came with the assumption that they might be something more original like "thyme and honey" or something.... First of all, I was disappointed by the HUGE cake box these donuts came in. As someone who values environmental sensitivity, I expect that local businesses especially would try their best to minimize their impact on the environment. I was surprised how much waste was produced by my order of 24 donuts, but at least they were cardboard I suppose which can be recycled. The donuts were consumed at both meetings in silence. Everyone was intrigued by the names and the concepts... Gooey Butter Cake, etc, but I did not hear any particularly exalted praise, which surprised me. I grabbed a jelly filled option which puckered my face from the utter sweetness. WAY TOO SWEET. I forced the thing down, I think out of denial that this donut place was missing the mark. I whispered in my head... "It can't be. I have waited forever for these donuts. They WILL be good." Alas, I gave in to the reality. These donuts did not live up to my expectations. I also hate to give a less than spectacular review for SD and I wish them all success, and perhaps taking some of these suggestions to heart will help them thrive in the future. read more

I've been accused of being a hipster. I grew up in NYC (strike one). I wear Warby Parker glasses (strike two). And I like bands you've never heard of (strike three). But I don't like Strange Donuts. The marketing team deserves 5 stars but the donuts here are incredibly mediocre. They are a bit dry, the dough is heavy, and sometimes taste strange just as the namesake promises but that's not a good thing. Of the dozen or so flavors I've tried I only liked the gooey butter one. Couple the low taste factor with the relatively high prices and I have a pretty good reason for passing on this donut shop. If you are looking for the hippest donut, by all means, wait an hour at 9 pm. If you're looking for the tastiest donut, move along because you won't find it here. read more

I was incredibly excited for Strange Donuts. I love strange food and good donuts. Much to my disappointment, these donuts are neither strange nor good. You can't just crumble up cookies or candy, put them on top of mediocre donuts, and call them "gourmet" or "strange". This business has a glaring lack of culinary creativity in light of their name. How about mixing up some herbs or interesting spices in the dough? How about providing something truly "strange"? Strange Donuts gets an "A" for marketing and intrigue. They have done a fantastic job generating buzz, kicking out interesting looking creations, and building a brand. However, the quality behind that brand is lacking at this point. When it comes to donut quality, this is where their energies need to be focused. Fundamental baking skills are lacking. Its more than about how you dress it up, its about the quality of the pastry itself. Donut Drive-in and Donut Stop kick out a high-quality pastry no matter the style. The long john was slathered in what looked and tasted like white butter. Gross. At $20/dozen- I expect more. What has happened? SD used to be amazing! The donuts looked great and tasted even better. My Sunday AM donuts looked and tasted like last night's leftovers. My teenagers wouldn't even eat them and they BEG for SD. They wound up in the garbage. I probably won't be back, sad but true. Finally! Strange Donuts and I have had a long awaited date. So my first trip to strange donuts was my most interesting... I stopped by to pick up some donuts but it turned out they weren't open. Not like, "sorry we close at noon" not open...but we don't "open" until tomorrow! Boy did I feel dumb! But no problem, they still gave me a chocolate glaze for my troubles. I knew at this moment that it was destiny...I needed to come back. AND I DID. The second visit wast a PM visit...about 11ish. I came in with 2 other friends but we ordered separately. These were MY donuts--not to be shared. I tried a heath bar, M&M, and the campfire one. They were all scrumptious. The M&M and Heath both tasted like donuts with their respective candy sprinkled on top. The campfire was a little more unique but not my favorite (not a big marshmallow guy). CANDY FOR THE WIN! Oh, boy. This is a tough review to write. Conflicted on many levels. I always root for St. Louis small businesses, and I loved the brilliant social/viral marketing done by the owners of Strange Donuts leading up to its grand opening (which was so well done that the line for donuts started forming on the sidewalk around 2-3am on the first day, and had the local media on its knees for months trying to determine the official grand opening date). HOWEVER, if the product doesn't back up the hype (or in my opinion, not even come close to the hype), then all you've created is a giant smoke and mirrors show. I'm writing this review in hopes that the owners will read it and do a hard pivot on their baking/donut execution strategy. Don't mean to be malicious at all. The Donuts: They are almost ALL "cake style" donuts. One night I went, they ONLY had cake style donuts. More like a dense birthday cake, and not like a beignet/zeppole. You won't find a glazed donut here. The donuts are generally dry. In fact, if you let it sit in the box for more than an hour after purchase, you can forget about liking it because by that time, it's lost so much moisture that it's become a diabetes-inducing paperweight. The toppings are creative, but they're not well-executed enough to make up for the dry and relatively tasteless base. The topping is also not attractively laid onto the donut. For example, the frosting/cookie topping on my cookies & cream donut looked like it was kind of just messily glopped on top (probably in 2 seconds with a spoon or spatula). Given the fact that these donuts are about 2-3 times the price of other donuts in St. Louis, I couldn't help but feel like I had gotten ripped off. What I paid for was marketing, and marketing alone usually doesn't win you loyal customers. There was a big argument about the quality of Strange Donuts in my office the other day. One person argued that John Donuts (the unassuming 11pm to 11am shop on South Broadway) made the best donuts in town. Another person proposed we do a taste test between John and Strange. About 2 dozen people participated in the donut taste test, and 100% of them agreed that John Donuts were far superior to Strange. Keep in mind, these were all 20-30 something, creative, open-minded people -- not grandma and grandpa. All we had left at the end of the test was an empty box from John, and a bunch of half eaten Strange Donuts. So, Strange, thanks for showing St. Louis businesses how to be brilliant and creative leading up to a product launch, but please (PLEASE) demonstrate how to create a sustainable business by focusing on your product. read more

I was working in Maplewood for several months this year at a business about a block from Strange Donuts. So at lunch time I'd often get a donut craving. It probably doesn't help that I follow Strange Donuts on Instagram. In the pictures they look really good, but actually the donuts are more often than not pretty bland and dry. I've tried probably a dozen kinds of donuts there. The decent ones were the French Toast and the Vanilla Fat Steve, but the rest including several fancy varieties were very disappointing. In one instance I got a blood orange donut, which had a pretty orange-pink glaze. I expected a moist fruity donut, but it was so dry I had to spit it out--all the flavor seemed to be in the thin frosting glaze. I have to agree with another reviewer--it seems like they just buy (old?) plain donuts from Schnucks and put toppings on them. The strangest parts of Strange Donuts aren't the donuts, but the service and the hours. Half the time when I stopped by at noon, they were already sold out and closed. Every time I was lucky to find them open, the workers seemed annoyed that I was there. A few times I had to stand there and wait for a minute while some workers finished their conversations. There is one guy in particular who seemed to be making fun of my voice as I was ordering on two different visits. It's especially awkward because you have to ask them a lot of questions because most of the names don't explain what the donut actually has in/on it. There are lots of other good donut places. Some less on the radar ones: Pharoah's Donuts downtown makes *amazing* perfect gooey donuts--no strange toppings but good. And MidTowne Market in St. Charles is an old 1950s style grocery store with a bakery that makes a great variety of delicious donuts every day. read more

So Strange Donuts did a GREAT job of marketing. Announce you are opening, make people wait over a year until you actually DO open, all the while pumping out donuts at festivals and tastings while building a strong media following. Darn good strategy. I also love that they are open late. So, now they they are open, it's time to finally review them. I stopped by to pick up 2 dozen to take to the office. I asked the guy to give me a little of everything, and only as I was rung up did I notice that he only gave me the "crazy" donuts (that cost $2 each) and none of the "regular" donuts (that cost $1). So, I had a slight bit of sticker shock, but that was mostly my fault for not specifying. On to the taste.... Overall, the donuts were.....donuts. Of the dozen, I tried quite a few of them, and most disappointed to be honest. The gooey butter donut really was a let down. The base donut, a simply cake donut, was actually really good. It had a great crust, with a wonderfully spongy center. That is where the good stopped. The glaze on the donut was just a glaze, nothing special. The topping, the part that was supposed to make it "gooey butter" was where the letdown really took shape. Instead of actually using yellow cake flavoring, or cream cheese or powdered sugar like a regular GB cake, it seemed the used a fake butter flavoring to try and create the effect, which ended up making something that tasted more like buttered popcorn, or FAKE buttered popcorn. The Bart's Revenge Donut (chocolate with butterfinger) featured a boring chocolate cake donut that lacked the same crunch and sponginess of the gooey butter donut. The butterfinger topping was more of a butterfinger dust, which makes it awfully hard to be crunchy, the main draw of a butterfinger. The dreamsicle donut was interesting. The guy at he counter asked if I wanted to add one to my dozens, as they were fresh and not yet on sale, so I would be the FIRST to try one. So of course i said SURE. It was basically a custard filled long john with white glaze that had been died slightly orange, and had a dusting of something on it that was indistinguishable from the rest of the donut. Not a single orange flavor in the donut, a major letdown. Now, had the donut been just labeled as a custard filled long john, I would have been more satisfied. This one failed simply for not meeting expectations. The m&m donut just looked like an iced cake donut with ground up m&ms on it. Nothing too strange about that. Overall, i really enjoy the concept of strange donuts, but I feel that they are trying too hard to be "strange" instead of actually focusing on making good tasting donuts. I've had many odd, and wonderfully tasty donuts in my days. These were simply strange, and were missing the wonderfully tasty part. I have yet to try their late night donuts, like chicken and waffles. Maybe they can redeem themselves then, and if so, I will update my review accordingly. UPDATE- I have been back a few more times now because I really want to like this place, but I'm still really let down. Some recent attempts... The Fat Elvis- Great concept, PB, chocolate, and banana? Sounds strange, and had the potential to be great. This donut failed, like the gooey butter donut, due to artificial flavor. The outside was OK, the peanut butter glaze was good, not great, but the banana custard in the middle was horrible. The used artificial banana flavoring. It tasked like a bad piece of banana candy. If I am going to pay $2 for donut, I expect some real banana to be used. Red Velvet- Boring. Luckily there was a bit of cream cheese flavor in the icing, but it couldn't save the dry boring red cake donut. SMOA- I guess it was supposed to be a take on a girl scout samoa. This cake donut was a little more moist, but all it had was a couple of drips of chocolate frosting, and a dozen or so flakes of coconut on top. For $2? I don't think so. Mexican Hot Chocolate- The chocolate dusting on top was kind of tasty. But again, super boring dry chocolate cake donut. I've come to the realization that they just don't use good ingredients. Lots of artificial flavors, lots of dry/stale like cake donuts. I think the donut concepts have promise, but for $2 a donut, I expect a little more craftsmanship and quality. Ok. I consider myself a donut connoisseur. It's my weakness. I don't turn down a good donut. I stress the word good. If I'm going to indulge in a calorie laden sugar bomb it better be good. If I'm going to wait in line and plonk down two bucks it better be damn good. I travel a lot and I yelp the donut shops to try in major cities so I was excited to see STL had a new shop to try. We tried the PB&J . The glaze was too sweet and hard and there was more jelly than donut. The chocolate salted caramel was again a bit too sweet and I did not taste caramel which left me wondering if we were given the wrong donut. The old fashioned glazed chocolate was the star- the dough was light and tender. Delicious . I'm glad we have a new donut place in STL but I'm going to stick to my favorite corner Mom and Pop place. Don't believe the hype. Ok. I have tried these donuts four times. These simply are not good donuts. The people who own and work at Strange Donuts are nice, creative, and hardworking folk, but their donuts do not taste good. I'm judging this based on all of their 'sweet' donuts. The gooey butter donut had a very gritty topping. The cake style donuts are too dense and dry. The fritter was the best, but I wouldn't eat it again. Honestly, I wasnt impressed at all. The looks of the donuts is for sure a good selling point, but the taste is where it all went downhill. My wife and I went by the shop a couple of hours after they opened, but well before they closed for the day. We got 6 different donuts so we could try a variety. The only two we found to be decent were a raspberry filled one and a basic vanilla one with sprinkles, which you can find at any donut shop. The rest were very dry and bland (oreo topped one, french toast one, graham cracker topped one and a gooey butter cake one). Then comes the price. I understand that these donuts are different from others, but $9 and some change for 6 donuts was pretty high. SD is a fun, novelty donut shop that overdelivers in presentation and variety, but lacks in terms of actual donut quality. I love the whole concept of introducing collaborations with other local haunts (Bogarts! Mai Lee!)- very STL spirit. However, I think the most effective collaboration they could pursue would be one with Donut Drive-in... maybe someone could help them with their overall donut execution.
