My husband, puppy, and I visited the newly-reopened Strange Roots in Gibsonia tonight, and all agreed it gets two thumbs up! He had the IPA & said it was good; I had the Alley Bat and we both loved it (we hardly ever like each other's beer). We split the lager just to try it and agreed it was a solid option. They've partnered with Off The Rails Barbeque and it's a great pairing. I call San Antonio home, so I'm a big fan of brisket. Theirs was very tasty, even without sauce, which is the hallmark of good brisket. The amount of meat for the price was a little skimpy, but I know everyone's balancing increased costs so I won't fault them for that. My husband had the nachos and we both agreed they'd have been better with real cheese rather than the Rico's they had. I got the brisket sandwich, only because they were already out of sliced brisket for the night. The sauce we both liked was the medium Kansas City, but I also liked the medium Carolina Gold and he liked the hot sauce (which is VERY hot). They were also already out of the mac & cheese, which was disappointing, but we assume that's because it was good. I had the collard greens because they're some of my favorites, and these did NOT disappoint. There's a good amount of space that's outside under cover (helpful, because it was raining when we got there), but even more space if you don't need cover. Actually, a very pleasant surprise. I've had their beer at some local restaurants and didn't enjoy it only to find out they have such a greater selection than what was presented to me. Tried a handful that night (no, I wasn't driving) and enjoyed every single one of them. The food appears to be outsourced to a local food truck owner and was also very good. They were definitely overwhelmed the night we were there, so the wait was a little longer, but no mistakes on the order and no issues with quality. This is such a fun brewery North of Pittsburgh. The inside is spacious with great art scenes on the walls. There's a large gravel patio out back with picnic tables and umbrellas for shade. Lots of graffiti art on the walls out back that's super cool. They don't have beer flights, but they offer 1/2 pours. A lot of the beers are sours, which I really enjoy from time to time. I ordered 1/2 pours of tartburst watermelon cherry and empty ocean. The tartburst was a really nice, mellow sour with great flavor. Empty ocean is a tasty, hoppy IPA. We enjoyed our time there and the food was good but there was only 1 beer we liked (which was juicy/hazy) - the rest of the beer options were pretty much all sours. The layout and experience isn't ideal - it's super loud when you're inside, the section where you order is right where people are walking in so that gets clustered, the service at the bar was a little slow and they messed up our order twice because they couldn't hear us. We would go back & recommend to those who haven't been, but there's a lot of opportunity to improve here. read more

We had a great time over the weekend coming to Strange Roots for a birthday party. I love that there was an outdoor section that we could enjoy the beautiful weather and drink some killer drinks. The outside had pavilions that were covered and picnic tables out in the open. Even though we were there a little bit early I see that they had a stage that I'm guessing music is played during the night time. For those who did not want to stand outside the inside does have tables and chairs but it's more of a warehouse with a big open door leading to the outside. Strange Roots not only had beer they had mixed drinks and some selections of sodas. A little bit for everyone and the sodas were nice because you could bring your kids to the outdoor section and just give him a soda while you enjoyed a brew. There was also food available for purchase. not only did they have a food truck they had a small menu that offered selections of sandwiches all the way to appetizers. We selected the pretzels and the mac and cheese. The pretzels came with a beer cheese that was interesting flavor it kind of grew on me but it did take some time. the mac and cheese was delicious and had different cheese than the pretzels. Both were good and I would get again. Overall if you're looking to spend a day in the sun with some friends drinking some beers this place is a good choice. read more

Let me introduce you to a little hidden gem in Gibsonia called "Strange Roots Experimental Ales". This ale house w/ its unique concepts has literally redefined what a brewery is in general, and doesn't hid the fact they are trying to be different then other breweries. The parking for the time being is limited so you have to show up early to be able to find a good place to fit in, but be warned they are only opened for 2 days out of the week since they have more than one location. Timing is everything at Strange Roots since they are only opened for 2 days out of the week as I had mentioned, but the drinks which are experimental inside are worth the wait as is the scenario. The schedule so far is (2 days as promised): Friday 5-10:00pm Saturday 2-10:00pm And it should also be noted they have no intention of ever making Pumpkin Beer/Pumpkin Spice Beer since they aim to be different, and they are very up front about it as well. At current they do not serve there own food, but instead have food trucks which park in the back. I believe they have plans to eventually serve there own food, and have in the wood works more days in mind to open for operation (all pending still of course). The food truck list is posted on there main Website for there Gibsonia location, and the food trucks are on a revolving schedule so you always have something new. Strange Roots open concept for the brewery in Gibsonia is very special as I had mentioned, but weather it will be fully open during the winter is another story in itself. As of now they have no plans to have any turns set in place, but that could of course change over time so you may want to check in on that when you are there. Was able to try there complete summer beer list on site, and by far there "Dandelion Beer" (also known as Bumble Lion) is the best, but sadly is no longer being made since it is officially out of season. (Not sure on the Fall menu yet) Paper Parachute was another great beer they make, but you will have to ask in person what is on tap or what they have in general to find out what is still in season and being produced. This was a super fun spot. It was a bit of a haul but if you are headed that direction it's a great place. The bar is large with a couple small tables and then a couple long rows of seating. There are a bunch of board games available, a large connect 4, and a cornhole set up. The beer was tasty, they also had a house hard seltzer which was interesting although I didn't try it. We also got the Mac and cheese, Cuban sandwich, soft pretzels, and the bbq sandwich and all were very tasty. Nothing blew anyone's mind, but it was solid and we had so much fun there that overall it was a very very positive experience. read more

A great spot. Accidentally went to the Millvale location for a happy hour recently as I was unaware a second Strange Roots existed. When I got here, I saw they had a different selection than the other. The space itself is really cool, the decor is neat. The inside here is much larger than the other location. They do not serve food here but I believe you can order takeout and they also had an Indian food truck outside (which was fantastic!). Definitely worth checking out. Honestly, the only reason I'm giving it 4/5 is because, coming from closer to the city, it's quite a hike and the roads are pretty windy. read more

This is a definite "will visit again". The beer is great, and the service is knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Too bad the Gibsonia location is only open on two nights a week - we would have happily gone back again during our visit. I had the Ragnarok, which is quite fruity, with tasty cherry overtones. My husband had the Slowpoke Gonzalez, which he thoroughly enjoyed. The only thing I wish they had (in addition to good pub food) are flights - three to four small servings of beer, allowing those of us who prefer not to drink to excess to sample multiple beers. This lack may be more of a result of PA's wonky liquor laws than any fault of the management. We'll be back next time we're in the area. read more

This is one of my favorite breweries in the area. Decor is amazing and if you love sour beers this place will not disappoint.

This place has a lot of potential but they definitely have some ways to go on creating a better system and delivery of service. Gibsonia really needs what this place has to offer, a nice relaxing environment, outdoor games, and a cool inside atmosphere that's more laid back than a typical dinner. However, this past Saturday when we went the kitchen was quite understaffed and the cook very honestly told my boyfriend he was alone and over 4 checks behind. (Honesty appreciated and it does happen... But shouldn't on a Saturday). Food took about 45 mins+ and it was just okay nothing spectacular. Formerly being in the service industry and bartending I quickly notice and pick up on the system or lack thereof behind a bar. There were about 3 or 4 bartenders, all very in the weeds, like any bartender that's busy heads were down and they didn't get to you until they really could. I feel like from the providing service aspect this place just isn't getting it right they would benefit from having staff come to you or even making semi-frequent rounds to the tables. It was evident to me that even if the bartenders each had a zone of the bar to focus on they didn't and it just was sloppy service. I'd love to go back in about 6 months or so to give it another chance and see if they've made improvements. read more

We had been meaning to try this place for some time and finally made it out on a Friday night. Not only was the beer delicious, but the decor and atmosphere are exceptional! We both drank the stout and shared an appetizer of the pretzels and beer cheese. Could not have been better. They also have a variety of board games to play. We played Scrabble and had a great time. My fiancé and I have been to both locations and it's very cool atmosphere at both. We are huge IPA fans but every time we go here I try beers I usually wouldn't and they are wonderful! Very different but one of my top 5 breweries in Pittsburgh!!! Food at Taste House was really delicious and food truck at brewery we had a bbq sandwich and chips that were delicious!!!
