This place has one of the the best happy hours around and even better...it lasts until 7pm. The staff is attentive, engaging and friendly. The ambiance is lovely and I appreciate the relaxing loop of Bob Ross (the painter dude with the perm) that is always playing. I've been looking for a new fun bar for awhile now, and I'm so glad I came across this place. Came here with a few friends for some drinks and this place did not disappoint! I really loved how low key this place is, I would have completely missed it if I didn't use the GPS. Their drink menu is really fun, they even have a shot menu of different shots for $6 everyday! Yes you're reading correctly- this is a five star review! However- I only had happy hour food! And this deserves five stars. I will be back for a more official review of dinner menu items! The place is so modern yet carries a flare for the rustic with the exposed brick and architecture around the bar and walls. Combo of high tops and low tops was pleasing to the eye- twinkling with lit candles! See photo. I was able to sit where I wanted on a Monday night at 6. Morgan, hostess and mc was so sweet and so down to earth. I honestly felt like she was my friend. Happy hour specials are generous but selective. All 6 dollar beers are now 4 and two wines. Also $5 well drinks. But the food is wheee this stands out!! What a cool group of appetizers for HH. We ordered literally one of everything (besides the tempeh toast). I came here last night while looking for an establishment to imbibe more. Just past the 11th hour on a Friday isn't exactly a lit time for Strangelove's, at least not on the evening of my patronization. That's cool, I don't mind getting all of the attention. In this case, I only had to share it with a few other patrons and my drinking partner. I immediately b-lined to the bathroom because it was that kind of night. Upon return to my comrade at the bar, he had already ordered a beer. I had a mediocre stout at the last place and was hit suddenly and abruptly by a severe case of the indecisiveitis. I dove into the depths of my consciousness aka Caribbean living days and ordered a rum (lol I initially wrote "rub") and diet. The beer selection is great, tons of varieties. I hadn't eaten and the waitress kindly informed me I had about 15 minutes to make my food selection. Kitchen closes at midnight here. The menu is dope AF because there's a TON of vegetarian options. Many of which can be made vegan. Muffaletta sandwich got my juices flowing right off the bat with smoked tempeh, olive spread, garlic mayo, and ciabatta. I read in another view the veggie burder is to die (lentils, beets, cucumber slaw, harissa mayo) but then my eye balls wandered down to the chickpea fritter pita (harissa, red leaf, tomato, pickled veggies). All of which are between $12-$13. The appetizer menu has a bunch of sensational choices among them: mac and cheese, whipped ricotta, pretzel bites, and MY ACHILLES HEEL: NACHOS. I couldn't refuse my soulmate. Nachos come with soy chorizo, a bunch of leaves on top, a red sauce, and cheese. All can be made vegan if requested. I poured some Franks on top for an extra kick. They were slightly different than what I'm used to with nachos. They're not completely covered and saturated in toppings (which would be preferred) but they're good nonetheless. The soy chorizo and that sauce were delicious. The leaves on top provided a nice flavor. Needless to say I cleaned the plate. Service was good, bartender was really nice and prompt. We found this place on Yelp after attending that block party on 11st which was an unorganized mess!! l'm so glad we did. This place was awesome! We walked to this location from the block party and we went straight to the bar since originally our first mission was to get a drink! The bartender was very nice and very efficient. She approached us immediately and offered us a menu. We purchased at least 2 to 3 drinks. I had the Apple cider as my first drink and it was so refreshing. We also ordered from the menu. We decided to get the fried Catfish sandwich with a side salad to share it was definitely enough for us to share. The Catfish was nice and crunchy with the perfect sauce. We also purchased the Coconut Mussels. It was delicious! At first I was like hmmmm coconut sauce but lt definitely delivered. They had a TV at the bar if you're interested in sports. They also played music throughout our whole time there. l especially loved the Catfish sandwich on a kaiser roll. It was so good . They have three restrooms total which was very clean. Strangelove's is a cozy bar in the middle of Old city and Center city. I came with a large group of people around 8 pm on a Friday night and the place was packed. Their happy hour menu goes from 5-7 pm, and as it transitions to dinner time, the number of people doesn't die down at all. Strangelove's is a great place to hang out with friends, watch a game, grab a drink etc. We ordered drinks and also took a stab at the Vegetarian and BBQ Pulled Pork nachos. The portions were big enough for 3-4 people to have good appetizer-sized portions. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly and willing to accommodate us moving around tables. This brand new beer bar on 11th Street has all the factors needed for great success. I say this mainly due to the fact that, for the first time in my entire life, I actually finished a glass of beer without making the cringe face. What more could one want from a beer bar? Usually when I'd try beer in the past (at Oktoberfest in Munich, at other local establishments, at the nagging of my friends..), my instant reaction has always been to grimace and guzzle water. That wasn't the case at Strangelove's last night. At the suggestion of my server, Ryan P., I tried the Rosee D'Hibiscus beer, which is tinted a pink color and has a fruity taste to it. My boyfriend went for the Yards Love Stout and the Rodenbach Grand Cru. I wasn't daring enough to try the Yards, but I did taste the Rodenbach and -- geez -- it didn't taste at all like the beer-vomit I've imagined in my brain for oh so long! He enjoyed both choices -- and was eyeing up other selections for future visits. In terms of food, I'd recommend the seared chicken sandwich and the blueberry buckle for dessert. By the time we left, both had been inhaled. By me. My boyfriend went for the wings, which had bits of chunky blue cheese sprinkled on top rather than as a dip. He only left the bones behind, despite saying he wasn't all that hungry. The check didn't break the bank and we didn't feel rushed out. There's also a sizable TV above the bar area. The exposed bricks are a great plus and the neutral colors really work for the place. If you like beer, I'd recommend. If you don't like beer, I'd recommend, too. read more

I promised I would update this review once I came back a few times and tried the food. As expected, the food was great, the service is always great, and the craft beers continue to be rare and delicious, so I'm upgrading my review to 5 stars. Do I think this place is "as good as it gets" close.. not the absolute best, but the fact that I continue to recommend this place and its always a front-runner in my decisions to get a good beer and food, bumps it up to 5 stars. Since I will continue to rave about the wonderful beers, I will now give you a review on the food: - fried green tomatoes - good, not my favorite but still delicious - pimento cheese - one of my favorites!! Get this! Its delicious - crispy mushroom torta - THE BEST! This is soo good, truffled mushrooms on crispy bread? WINNER! I love this. - Fried Okra was good, interesting. - Steak fries are good, very thick cut. I want to try more salads next. So I will be back, as usual! Glad to support a local restaurant during COVID! Outdoor dining with heaters seats up to 4. Servers and staff wear masks. Fast and efficient service, server made good recommendations. I've been here several times but went for their Taco Tuesday last night. Creative cocktails and really good margaritas. Tacos were good too. Like we didn't consume enough at the previous establishment , we needed a nightcap I guess. First time in here the place had a relax mood to it. Seeing I was parched I had started the evening with a nice glass of Chimay Triple , nothing but smooth and refreshing. Seeing I was pleased with this I went for one more in a draft called a Half Acre Daisy Cutter. Very pleasant, smooth with a great after taste to her. (Sorry no picture of this one, after I had finished it came to me ) From what I noticed they have tables that line the wall for your dinning pleasures, with a good amount of seats that align the bar. There is a second floor to Strangelove's with another bar, along with more tables. I could see why they would need it, the space is limited on the first floor. I haven't had the chance to try anything off their menu , seeing I was at full tilt from earlier. The menu does look good, this is something I don't mind coming back again with the wife. Great spot to come in and enjoy a few libations , good looking menu, and a staff that is attentive and helpful. Only issue I have is if you are enjoying some refreshment the parking garage located across the street. At night when the shades are up and cars are coming out of that garage , lets just say it illuminates the whole lower floor. Nothing like a blinding light to distract you. Strangelove's is a great venue for casual dinner and drinks. I made a reservation in advance for 10 people on a Friday night at 6pm. I love that they have happy hour until 7pm on Friday nights - that's relatively hard to find! I had two local beers on draft that would normally have been $6 each but were $4 during happy hour. I also had the $5 vegetarian nachos (corn tortilla, refritos, soy chorizo, cheddar, and lime crema) which were a happy hour deal as well. They were good, but came in a pretty small portion. To eat, I split a sandwich with my friend; we got the Smoked Tempeh Bahn Mi (with soy chili glaze, spiced vegan mayo, cilantro, and pickled veggies) which came with fries. It was super yummy. Docking a half star for the nachos, and docking another half star for service, just because we didn't get our waters refilled until the end of our meal, and it took forever to get our bill at the end. My girlfriend and I ordered takeout over the weekend. We ordered the Russian kale salad, pretzel bites, corn dog, veggie burger and the Strangelove's burger. The kale salad was extremely disappointing. It was smaller than the side salad that came with the veggie burger. It was tasty and the dressing was good, however it was so small that for $12 it was a complete ripoff. The pretzel bites were good, and the mustard dipping sauce was really good. The corn dog was just meh. I didn't really care for it. It was overpriced at $6 for what it was. I wasn't a big fan of the kielbasa. My girlfriend had the veggie burger with side salad. She really enjoyed the veggie burger, but the side salad didn't come with any dressing. The Strangelove's burger was good, but nothing great. It was pretty average and seems overpriced at $15. Overall we were pretty disappointed in our meal. It seemed very expensive for very average food. Maybe it is because we got takeout and did not dine in? Wanted to make last-minute-celebratory-birthday plans for a friend. But whoops! It's Friday... and Valentine's Day!! That's how we ended up at Strangelove's. The day before they had a spot open at 745 on opentable (yes you can make a reservation for Strangelove's on opentable) and bam! We had a birthday place on Valentine's Day! It's a cute spot. It's quirky and fun and the food was good. Our table ordered up goat cheese with grilled bread... so good and creamy. Included on that plate was arugula that you could heap on the bread with the goat cheese. We also ordered shrimp skewers that were served like a spring roll. Best order of the night. My ZLT was good (zucchini, lettuce and tomato). I guess I skipped over the menu description because I thought the zucchini would be grilled. It was deep fried but tasted good. The fries are good... I mean really, really good. There were also orders of catfish salad that was tasty, fish and chips and the burger. I didn't have a bite but the eater of the burger said it was delicious. It looked good... juicy and piled high with goat cheese and bacon. One small thing...we found a piece of plastic in the salad. It just looked like it was a part of the bag it came in but it was a bit off putting. (These types of things happen, I guess..) We told the manager and she did offer a beer on the house so they did acknowledge it. This is a good spot. Went here for lunch on a Tuesday and then later in the evening for drinks. The male server (brown hair green eyes) was sweet and great. Going back for drinks later was another employee who was also accommodating and friendly as well. I understand Philly is very liberal and aren't huge fans of law enforcement nowadays. The bartender later in the evening mentioned something about cops and I asked how Philly felt about cops recently and she made a very negative comment about them. Maybe that employee wouldn't have said something if they knew they were serving an off duty cop. Either way, maybe a better idea to keep their opinions about that kinda thing to themselves when serving customers. I don't knock the employee or business because I asked and I would still go back, but I know others may not be so forgiving. read more

But, having noticed their sign about the weekend brunch and being the brunch lover that I am, I decided to stop by there on a Sunday at around noon. I understand that it is peak brunch slot. I was hungry after a workout class, and I stepped in and saw some open tables and I gave myself a mental high-five. So, I looked for the host but did not find one, the bartender was just doing their thing, I was confused as to what I was supposed to do. I personally would prefer indoor dining because there was just a lot of commotion going on where we were sitting on the sidewalk (walkers, bicyclists) and streets (trash trucks and buses). Sad to say I used to love this place but had a terrible experience last night and won't be back. Rude staff and new, worse menu. My partner politely asked the waitress what vegan options she recommended and she WENT IN on him for no reason and said, "We have no vegan options, just vegetarian, because vegans abandoned us during Covid and all the vegan food went bad so we don't serve it anymore because we didn't get enough vegan customers and we had to throw out all this food..." She went on and on complaining about vegans. It was SO awkward, our table of six was just staring at her...like we're here to hang out and get food, not listen to you rant. As if there aren't plenty of vegetables and vegan ingredients served with all their meat dishes (french fries anyone?)...made no sense. And she didn't even try to accommodate like "I can ask the chef" or "maybe this without cheese" or whatever. Meanwhile, I'm 95% sure there ARE vegan options still on the menu (hummus plate, brussels sprouts, etc), but after her very long, rude, super weird anti-vegan rant and her lack of assurance that ANYTHING on the menu could be vegan, the vegans decided not to order food. I felt super bad about it because I chose the place for a large group specifically because I remembered it was a good spot for our mixed group of vegans and meat eaters. So we spent a bunch of money there, and the vegans went hungry for the night. I promoted this place on HappyCow (a website for vegan and vegetarian friendly places) back in 2020 and was super sad to change my review there. Menu items tried to be creative but execution was lacking. Everything tasted over spiced with Cajun seasoning! The menu was not very helpful and used these fancy sounding names for the ingredients but in all reality it's just whatever the main ingredient with Cajun/old bay-esque spices. I got the mussels, disappointing. There was barely any meat in the mussels. Duck gumbo was disappointing, too. Could not find any big chunks of duck in in. I got the fried green tomatoes and it was a total rip off. It was 5 slices of battered fried tomato topped with 1 table spoon worth of lump crab cake for the whole dish (not on each of the tomato slices). I basically paid $2 per tomatoe slice. On top of that, they didn't even give me a whole tomato! I did like how their ketchup was homemade. I also really enjoyed their grits topped with with Gouda and scallions. I will have to try to replicate that dish at home. It was also the cheapest item I ordered that night. Service was good. I spilled ice water all over myself and the wait staff was happy to give me towels. I would not come back here though. It is really overpriced bar food that tries hard too be fancy but all they do is add Cajun spice powder to almost everything to make it seem like fancy cooking from Louisiana with all these crazy ingredients listed on the menu description. The quality isn't there. Everything looks sloppily put together and slopped onto a plate. You just can't tell because the lighting is dark in there. I only noticed after looking at the photos I took. I can't give this restaurant more than 3 stars because for me, the food at a 4/5 star restaurant can't be hit or miss. Out of maybe 5 dishes my table of three ordered only one dish (the grits) was a hit, other were all misses. As for the bar, the beer selection was not bad. I've been here quite a few times, either for happy hour, brunch or dinner with good brews. I've also been to all their sister restaurants, Clarkville, Local 44, Couer and previous Memphis Taproom. Yesterday's brunch experience was under par. The food was good -- we got the pretzel bites, vegan nachos and I got the chilaquiles. One wish I had, is that my server told me that the chilaquiles were so similar to the nachos. Obviously, I did not enjoy my entree very much after already having the nachos as appetizer. My boyfriend's omelette was very good. Service wise -- the speed, was terrible. Our server was very kind, friendly and professional. but the kitchen was terribly slow. We waiter almost an hour, about 45-53 minutes for our entrees to come out. That's way too long. Overall, solid spot with good beer and food. I went around Halloween last year and they had it all decorated. Their drinks for brunch were pretty unique and I don't regret going there. Had to take a to go box since the food was plenty. It came with whipped cream, fruit and maple syrup, it was so good! My friend had the Monte Cristo Sandwich which he liked. I got a side of sausage and they were giving free mimosas!!! Our waitress was very kind and sweet, I thought that she was great!! Really hoping to see other people check them out for brunch, they've only recently started offering brunch and it was delicious! My Girlfriend and our friend visiting us came here for drinks after dinner on a Friday night. Oddly, the bar was pretty dead, which we didn't necessarily mind because it makes it much easier to hold conversation. The cocktails, beer, and ciders were all very good. Our server was very attentive, courteous, and did not hassle us sending back one of the drinks due to its taste not being appealing. The only downside to this establishment was we saw a mouse more than once and it was the same one. While it didn't bother me and it was humorous to watch, the possible health factor was not lost on me. I'd still return to eat and/or drink and if I saw the little guy again I'd probably grin and keep rooting for it. read more

It really pains me to write this review but I feel obliged to for the sake of others. Yesterday, my friends and I went out for my some drinks and food. A female server had initially told us that there was no table service and we were fine with that. At some point, this server and a male server started taking the order and serving us food. The service wasn't particularly amazing but what really struck is how rude the male server. He was slamming the plates on the table and taking our food before we even finished eating. We asked him what time the place was closing he said "last call is now." Last call doesn't necessarily equate to closing time, so my friend asked again what time is closing. He repeated "last call is now" rudely several times. We asked are you closing now and he rudely said "we're just waiting for you guys to leave." The issue is Google and their website had contradicting and confusing closing times, which is fine but he could have told us the closing time politely. Mind you it was 9:30 pm at this point. I decided that I would only tip him 10%. He was incredibly rude and neither servers who took turns serving us offered exceptional service. Now, here's when things take a turn for the worst. My friends and I were talking outside the restaurant and the male server comes out and starts CURSING us out over the tip. We were AFRAID for our safety and well being. One of my friends even took out a $10 bill and gave it to him but he still would not stop verbally attacking us. At some point, we realized that he appeared to be under the influence of something. I have pictures and videos of this incident and the server but I will refrain my posting those. As a group of people of color (POC), we truly wonder if the outcome would have been different if we were not POC and if this attack was racially motivated to an extent.
